Reason.tv: Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.)
Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) has represented the Diamondback State's sixth congressional district since 2001, cutting a pro-immigration, pro-trade, limited-government, anti-spending path that contrasts sharply with the mainstream of the Republican Party.
Flake's campaign against "earmarking," or larding up bills with giveaways for legislators' home districts, brought national attention to this issue and inspired some important rule changes. He has been a lonely voice in the House calling for an end to the U.S.-imposed travel ban on Cuba . And in a state that has shocked much of the country with its intolerance toward both documented and undocumented immigrants, Flake has consistently argued for reducing obstacles to legal immigration and establishing more effective guest worker programs.
Now Flake has his eye on the Senate seat being vacated next year by the retiring Republican Jon Kyl. While there's plenty of competition for his House job, Flake is so far alone in the race for Arizona's junior Senate seat.
A former head of the Goldwater Institute and practicing Mormon, Flake is a leading voice for freer markets and more personal freedom within the Republican Party.
Late in June, Flake sat down with Reason Senior Editor Tim Cavanaugh to discuss these matters and more.

I'll sum it up: An attempt by a Reuters columnist to drum up some anti-corporate hysteria completely backfires due to his inability to understand basic corporate accounting practices.
News Corp's filings show the company changed reporting conventions in its 2007 annual report when it reversed the way it showed positive and negative numbers.
These lulz taste good to me.
Hey, that's not just any Reuters columnist! That's slayer of Reason David Cay Johnston! And he's lying again! This may be worth its own post.
Is Boxer running for this seat as well?
er my bad, not Barbara Boxer, Gabrielle Giffords. Got my alliterative congresswomans mixed up.
Oh, she's still recovering, I guess I thought she was better already. Nevermind!
You're like a dog chasing it's own tail.
Flake had voted to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage with a Federal Marriage Amendment in 2004 and 2006.
On February 10, 2011 Jeff Flake again voted to renew key provisions of the USA PATRIOT ACT.
How does Flake compare to Bachmann?
And why is one of them a Reason-hero and the other is some crazy SoCon lady?
another mormon theocrat
Harry Reid?
Chris Wallace won't ask Flake if he is a flake.
I'm more worried about the federal government butt fucking this country than I am about the federal government getting between two guys wanting to butt fuck each other.
both documented and undocumented immigrants
Sort of like "documented and undocumented drivers" and "documented and undocumented guns", etc?
WTF is a "documented gun"?
That youtube still shows that Flake's time in the House has taken its toll.
He shall be slandered and smeared... by the Houston Chronicle!
[That paper already has plenty of experience in that.]
in a state that has shocked much of the country with its intolerance toward both documented and undocumented immigrants
Oh shut up. What intolerance towards "documented" immigrants are you talking about? And I have trouble with characterizing an insistence that federal law be enforced as "intolerance" toward illegal immigrants.
I'll vote for Flake for senator when the time comes but I'm thumbs down on newspeak and "undocumented" accusations of intolerance against my home state, weird as it is.
Uh, how about the general hassling and profiling of any brown person suspected of being illegal? I think that counts as intolerance, and there has been plenty of that nonsense.
I'm quite fine with accurate accusations of intolerance against my home state. It's a great place to live... so long as you're white and straight.
I said "documented."
There have been many cases of legal immigrants and U.S. citizens getting police attention over immigration enforcement. Four days ago, America's toughest sheriff had to pay $200,000 of the taxpayers' money over a case where deputies detained and harassed a legal permanent resident and an American citizen in an attempted immigration enforcement.
SIV stole my thunder. Yes Flake is a phoney. He champions Libertarian causes of non-tabled issues, but repeatedly supports the Patriot Act.
He also lied about his self-imposed term limits.
-
MEMO TO REASON: STOP SUPPORTING THIS GUY!!!
-
Anyone who supports the PAT ACT is a tool for the state and the enemy of Libertarianism/Freedom. Reason's continued support for him is a stain on this site.
I rank Flake in the small "good" category of Congressmen. I rank Bachmann about the same, slightly better on some issues and slightly worse on others. I don't understand why Reason showers one with adoration and the other with mocking scorn.
Softball questions about Patriot Act. No questions about votes on Iraq or Afghanistan. No questions about the War on Drugs. Depending on what is asked, ANY politician can come across as a smart, articulate advocate of limited government. Flake may have good intentions and may be better than most members of Congress. That doesn't mean he's good enough.
Not really interested in hearing from any of these gladhanders unless they accomplish something worth accomplishing. I'm not holding my breath.
People, why all the hate? Is Flake perfect? No, of course not.
But who the fuck else in congress is better?!
In your ridiculous pursuit of puritanical libertarians you're shunning one of the very few congressman who's actually principled enough to vote against his own party on a variety of statist policies.
I'm not suggesting Flake or anyone else should be above criticism, but if you really want a freer society, how about you recognize and support the VERY few people who are at least sympathetic to a libertarian worldview.
But who the fuck else in congress is better?!
And thats it. The best they have is the likes of Flake or Ryan.
Ryan is a statist POS. He voted for TARP, the auto bailouts etc. I could list about 6-20 somewhat "pro-liberty" congresscritters (depending on how loose the criteria). Ryan doesn't even come close to making the list.
It's lame thinking like this that allowed the GOP to degenerate and remain in power for over a decade.
-
My attitude is that if the best choice is the lesser of two evils, then the entire system needs to be flushed.
-
I'm simply waiting for the dollar to crash.
-
The PAT ACT is no trivial thing. It's suspension of habeus corpus and runs afoul to the most basic of our freedoms (which supersede governments). Flake recently had a golden opportunity to vote against extending this horrid act, when 26 GOPers joined with a majority of Dems, but didn't.
Shame on him. And shame on Reason to promote him.
It's not "hate" if we wonder where Rep. Flake stands on the War on Terror and the War on Drugs.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshibalaptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by fedex. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores.I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, BuzzSave.com
