Majorities Across Partisan Groups Agree: US Should Mind Its Own Business Internationally
Even conservative Republicans turn from Bush era foreign policy
If GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney could be used as a political barometer to gauge where mainstream Republicans are going, he hits the mark according to the Pew Research Center's political typology survey.
In the second GOP presidential debate on June 13 in New Hampshire, Mitt Romney declared, "It's time for us to bring our troops home as soon as we possibly can…Only the Afghanis can win Afghanistan's independence from the Taliban".
Pew Research Center data released on May 4 shows a dramatic shift in the public's desire to be active in world affairs and deal with problems overseas, even among conservative Republicans.
In 2004, 58% of conservative Republicans believed it was best to be active in world affairs, compared to only 39% in 2011. In 2004, 49% of conservative Republicans wanted to pay less attention to problems overseas compared to 58% in 2011.
Among all political groups a majority agree America should pay less attention to problems overseas, with 55% conservative Republicans, 54% liberal/moderate Republicans, 59% Independents, 63% conservative/moderate Democrats, 57% liberal Democrats.

Maybe the people are coming around to agree with a non-interventionist foreign policy, I certainly hope so.
I just read a semi-relevant article in regards to foreign policy in general, titled "Non-intervention: A foreign policy for the American Citizen" figured some of you might be interested...

Meaningful interviews, it makes me understand more.

The only problem I would have with the lack of intervention is the ever-growing disinterest and lack of knowledge of the rest of the world. Too many Americans have no idea what is beyond the American borders, and most simply don't care. As an American living abroad, it can be very frustrating. As an example, I called Bank of America to change my address and when I mention I live in Finland, not the US, I get asked "Where's that?" I have heard that before, and it's not that rare not not know all the European countries, so I respond "It's in northern Europe." The second question shocked me, however. "Where's that?" It wasn't a pronunciation or communication issue; she had genuinely no idea where Europe was.
If disinterest is extending this far, then our education is seriously seriously lacking.. this is part of basic education that all Americans should know, and if someone doesn't even know where EUROPE is, then the US is in for some difficulties.
Then again, on a somewhat cynical note, if our education is so lacking then why would we be intervening in the first place?
I'm pretty sure most Americans are taught where Europe is. Sometimes people are just lazy and stupid.
Also, FWIW, I almost always have to explain where North Carolina is to Europeans (and always to Japanese). North Carolina is larger than Switzerland and larger than Norway and Finland combined. (As a side benefit, you really only have to know where one of the Carolinas is.) If Americans are to be expected to know the larger states of Europe, the opposite should be true, too.
I think a political party should be formed around taking scientific surveys. The results of the survey can form the platform. http://www.thenewthirdparty.blogspot.com
I think that's been kinda tried. Our president for example has a platform against the Patriot Act... in favor of ending wars... in favor of closing Guantanamo Bay... in favor of lowering health costs... all of these are popular ideas. He didn't do any of those, but the platform matches polling data for the most part.
