Massachusetts Dems Push to Limit Public Employees' Collective Bargaining
From the Boston Globe, news of a Blue State state legislature acting all Wisconsiny. The Bay State's Democratically controlled lower chamber pushed to cut back collective bargaining for public employees:
The 111-to-42 vote followed tougher measures to broadly eliminate collective bargaining rights for public employees in Ohio, Wisconsin, and other states. But unlike those efforts, the push in Massachusetts was led by Democrats who have traditionally stood with labor to oppose any reduction in workers' rights….
[House Speaker Robert A.]DeLeo said the House measure would save $100 million for cities and towns in the upcoming budget year, helping them avoid layoffs and reductions in services. He called his plan one of the most significant reforms the state can adopt to help control escalating health care costs….
I don't think that collective bargaining is choke point (choke-hold?) point in terms of state budget woes (states without collective bargaining are just as broke as those with it), but expect to see all states, whether considered liberal or conservative, blue or red, whatever, to be pushing back against out-of-whack public-sector compensation.
Indeed, here's a vid on the topic that Reason.tv did with the Heritage Foundation on the very topic:

In other news, pigs fly over a frozen hellscape.
It must be the Cubbies' year for this century.
The Massachusetts state legislature is fascist! These evil Republicans must be defeated before.... oh wait, let us get back to you, it seems the meme has just changed.
Those Koch Brothers can buy anyone!
Evander Hollyfield said about going up against Mike Tyson, "He has never been hit."
For a long time, there has been plenty of growth in the US - republicans could lower taxes (and increase spending) and democrats could increase spending (and lower taxes as well).
Now, for a period I expect will last a long while, US legislators will face something that have never had to do before - say no to constituents.
They're not going to say no until we have walked off the cliff and are about to plunge downward, Wyle E. Coyote style. Look at how Paul Ryan has been savaged in those town hall meetings over his quite cautious plan for cutting spending on entitlements. Politicians will beg, borrow, steal, and print every dollar they can before telling any voters (esp. old people) "no."
Seems like an easy idea to sell, to be honest: we already have collective bargaining out of the box for public employees -- it's called democracy.
'said Robert J. Haynes, president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. "These are the same Democrats that all these labor unions elected. The same Democrats who we contributed to in their campaigns."'
Hey, that's not fair. We bought these guys fair and square. That's the deal. Quid pro quo.
Remember "The Candidate", Robert Redford as the idealistic Senate candidate ? There's a little scene where his campaign manager (Peter Boyle) is introducing Redford to some supporters, one of whom is the head of a union. And Redford wants to know, basically, who the hell was that guy, and Boyle tells him straight up, you wanna get elected, you play ball with the unions. That little scene just pops into my head sometimes, not sure why.
Desperately trying to keep their phoney baloney jobs. Brilliant.
The proposal only effects bargaining for health care. I know this, because, unlike the media coverage of Wisconsin, this article detailed the proposed restrictions on bargaining.
Hey! Hey!
Ho! Ho!
Where'd all the protesters go?
Well, duh!
They went to the midwest, to protest the Kochtipus.
"The same Democrats who we contributed to in their campaigns."
Must've been educated at a public school.
the push in Massachusetts was led by Democrats
TO THE BARRICAD .... oh, never mind then.
states without collective bargaining are just as broke as those with it
Calls for a link.
Texas.
Still needs a link, not to mention more than one example.
Are we talking "just as broke" per capita? As a percentage of the budget? As a percentage of the state's economy? Current account only, or including deferred obligations?

Comparison of states (plural) with collective bargaining to states (plural) without?
I'm a partisan hack, so I'm not going to comment on this story.
Is this a spoof?
Is this?
Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?
Don't you see? It's an unholy alliance between the Scotts. Brown and Walker!
Anyway, this can't be true. The Media isn't screaming bloody murder about this.
"The same Democrats who we contributed to in their campaigns."
Union to English Translator:
"Those bastards won't stay bought!"
What do the democrats have to lose? Is the teachers union going to give money to republicans? I haven't read any union responses to this, but I imagine I will be r-ing on the fl when I do.
Haha, this hypocrisy is so... predictable.
When do the protesters arrive with their sleeping bags and cowbells?
Dropkick Murphys are not going to be happy...
"THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LI -- oh, fuck it."
Funny how the rubber stampers are actually school boards who are appointed by the public... so blame unions for getting optimal working conditions for their employees?? Really? Should we blame OSHA for keeping idiots alive also? Face the reality people, governments who allow good American businesses to send their jobs overseas are the problems, not the unions.
Face the reality people, governments who allow good American businesses to send their jobs overseas are the problems, not the unions.
LOL at this--a tacit admission that when a business decides having a union isn't worth the trouble, it can pack up and leave, and the union can't do jack shit about it.
If the unions are so fucking special and indispensable, maybe they should start up their own businesses and show those evil capitalists how it's really done.
It's about time. The state pension crisis is real and going to hit the fan soon.
