Ann Arbor-Area Reasonoids: Radley Balko Speaking at the University of Michigan Law School This Week

This Wednesday, April 13th, at 12:15 pm, Reason Senior Editor Radley Balko will speak about police militarization at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor. The speech will be at  625 S. State St. in room 220.

Balko's speech is sponsored by the Federalist Society and the American Civil Liberties Union. It is open to the public.

Funny AND informative: I had no idea there was a 20th century Supreme Court decision addressing the Third Amendment.

Engblom v. Carey only made it to 2nd circuit court of appeals. It didnt make it to the Supremes (as the article points out correctly).

I actually just went and read up on it. Striking prison guards were kicked out of their on-prison apartments to house National Guardsmen who were replacing the strikers.

The court ruled that NY was violating the 3rd.

"BRADFORD -- Vermont State Police said troopers used a Taser to subdue a woman that they thought had broken into a residence Sunday, but it turned out she had permission to be in her father's apartment.

Julia Benjamin, 25, of Topsham was jailed for lack of $500 bail on charges of assault on law enforcement and resisting arrest inside her father's home on Clear Meadow Lane at about 11 a.m. Sunday, state police said. They expect she will be arraigned today in Orange Superior Court.
Senior Trooper Michael Dion said state police responded to a possible burglary in progress complaint after neighbors called 911 to report somebody was inside the apartment and they had seen a broken glass panel in the front door. The neighbors knew the owner was away, Dion said.
Troopers found Benjamin barricaded inside the bathroom, but troopers eventually made their way into the room, Dion said. He said attempts to take Benjamin into custody peacefully were unsuccessful and she splashed troopers in the face with the contents of a soda bottle. He said she also scratched and kicked both troopers before she was controlled by a Taser, Dion said. "
