Hey Obama, You Do Realize That You're Responsible for the Shutdown if it Happens, Dontcha?
President Barack Obama, along with most of his Democratic colleagues, are bellyaching that John Brown No Compromise Republidouches are gonna shut the government down by not compromisin' already even though they got everything they wanted, including trims variously valued at effectively 0.00 percent of this year's federal spending.
Yeah, mebbe. I have no interest in supporting Republicans - indeed, I think The Tears of John Boehner Are Like Acid to Freedom - but the Dems oughta face facts. The only reason that they are in a pickle is because they utterly failed to pass a fricking budget last year even though they controlled the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. There's no way around it, fellers: You stunk up the joint worse than the enema man, Snoopy Poopy Poop Dogg, and Alan Simpson together.
This marks the only time since current budget-process rules were adopted in 1974 that a budget didn't get done. Nice going, Dems. Regardless of who voters end up blaming this time around, in your heart, you know you suck.
And just how bad will a government shutdown be? The New York Times reports on the horror.
SOCIAL SECURITY The government would continue to make Social Security payments to the 53 million beneficiaries. "We will continue to process applications for benefits, but it might take longer if a shutdown does occur," said Mark Hinkle, a spokesman for Social Security. "Our local offices will open for limited services. We are working on the specifics."
A huge backlog of applications for Social Security disability benefits would grow even larger, agency officials said.
HEALTH CARE Medicare, the program for people who are 65 and older or disabled, would continue to pay doctors and hospitals for several weeks, using money from its trust funds…
PASSPORTS As a national security agency, the State Department would continue operations, but some activities, like issuing passports for travelers and visas for foreigners coming to the United States, could stop or face significant delays. Emergency consular services would continue.
POSTAL SERVICE Post offices would maintain their regular hours and mail delivery would continue.
FOOD STAMPS Since the government makes the money available to states by the beginning of each month, advocates for food stamp recipients predicted no immediate impact on benefits. "They should be O.K. for the month of April," said Stacy Dean, a food stamp expert at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
MILITARY Active-duty personnel would continue to work and earn pay during a shutdown, but would generally not receive paychecks until Congress appropriated money at some later date. While troops in combat zones and assisting Japanese earthquake relief would continue operations, they might not be paid until a new budget was approved….
PARKS AND MUSEUMS National parks would be closed and the Smithsonian Institution's museums are planning to close.
WELFARE (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Benefits have been authorized through the end of September, so experts predicted that cash assistance payments would not be affected. States share in the costs and could substitute their own money to make up for delays in the arrival of federal dollars.
"Our expectation is that it's not going to have a big impact," said LaDonna A. Pavetti, of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
As Los Lobos once asked, with all that, how will the wolf survive?

The horror, the horror.
Yup, just like Somalia.
The ROADS! All interstate higways shall be closed.
That is one great rumor!
"You haven't seen it debunked on Snopes, have you?"
From a politics-as-sports perspective, this was a genius play on the part of the Democrats.
The numbers are the numbers, and the best way to deal with numbers that show you're broke is to only deal with them when you can blame the outcomes (cuts) on someone else.
Genuis? All it took was the creation of apublic instruction system designed to create untermensh who'll believe the officialdom narrative even remotely plausible . . .
Okay, that was genius.
who'll believe the officialdom narrative even remotely plausible . . .
who'll believe the officialdom narrative to be even remotely plausible . . .
Apologies. My girlfriend had just come in to inform me that Gray's Anatomy and Private Practice will be in reruns for the entire month. A wave of happiness overcame me as I was writing.
I suffered through GA: The Musical last Thursday in the background, and I took it out on you guys. Why an RN watches hospital dramas is not something I can explain even after asking several times (she liked ER too).
Just thought it was fair to point out that it's no so much "genius" on the part of the Democrats, but the fact that their political stance of "We wanted to keep everything the way it was, but those mean Republicans want to ruin it." is a much easier sell.
Put another way, the Democrats are the mom in the car who says, "Lets stop for ice cream!" while the Republicans are the dad who has to say, "We can't afford it!" The kids in the back seat (voters) are naturally going to blame the dad for the fact that they're not getting ice cream rather than blame mom for wanting to spend their college fund.
Sure, if ice cream = socially acceptable standard of living for America's least fortunate.
The Republicans filibustered the budget, so the Dems were unable to get it passed. Your argument is wrong on its face.
Funny how Bush was able to get budgets passed with smaller majorities. Of course, given the huge spending ramps that took place, it's not a surprise the Dems didn't have a problem okaying them.
for that to even have a passing resemblence to reality, the democrats would have had to pass a budget in the house for the republicans to filibuster in the senate. Since the democrat led house never sent a budget to the senate, there wasn't a filibuster option
I've seen this meme spreading on other websites. Link, or it didn't happen.
In fact, let me give you a link that might (but prolly won't) keep you from pulling that out of your but in the future:
"Given the importance of approving a budget for the smooth operation of federal government, the Budget Act explicitly bars the use of a filibuster during the reconciliation stage of the process."

ahh, partisan hackery at it's finest.
Perhaps you could post a link to the budget the House passed and the Republicans filibustered in the Senate.
Take your time to find it...I'll be waiting.
Awesome, so I'm still going to get mail destined for houses blocks away at the usual rate and quantity.
if people don't get their Netflix there will be rioting in the streets.
Either that, or the congresscritters don't want to suspend their franking privileges
if people don't get their Netflix there will be rioting in the streets.
I'm going to go riot just for the helluvit. I need a break.
Looks like the moochers will still be raiding my paycheck before I get my hands on it. So is it really shutdown?
..it's not a SHUTDOWN shutdown...
Oohh OK 😉
They call it a shutdown, but it's all just a big tease.
But the Dept. of Agriculture would shut down. Crops couldn't grow, cows, goats, and chickens would stop producing, meat would turn to ash and fish would turn to salt.
Without the DOA's regulations, farmers would plant their tools and thresh their livestock. Food-hauling trucks will drive into the sea, and sheep will start producing steel wool.
LOL
The Department of Transportation would also shut down. Aircraft would drop out of the sky, and the interstate highway system would be menaced by the Ayatolla of Rock-And-Rolla, Lord Humungous.
"the interstate highway system would be menaced..."
Where the hell is Mad Max when you need him?
and sheep will start producing steel wool.
This is what happens when you mess with nature...
At least the DOA can't discriminate against more black farmers.
But now who will pay the ones who have been discriminated $50,000 per head?
As I noted elsewhere earlier today: Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down!
Let me see if i understand you....
Who is going to start the scifi thread about what America looks like after it stays shut down for 30 years?
Zombies! Zombies everywhere!
The zombies are in Washington.
I am interested in what you have to say and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Any thoughts on the Pence amendment to strip Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers of all federal funding and Democrat's "outrage" about using a government shutdown to advance a social agenda? (Aside from most libertarian's belief that we shouldn't be funding them in the first place, of course, and not simply because of the abortion issue.)

"Any thoughts on the *X* amendment to strip *Y* of all federal funding and Democrat's "outrage" about using a government shutdown to *CUT ANY AND ALL COSTS*?"
Yes. Good.
At this point, I'm for any amendment to strip any funding from any agency.
I kinda hope the Republicans over-reach, so in two years, we get angry Democrats taking over the House and cutting Republican sacred cows (abstinence initiatives, DARE, etc.), but the Repubs end up w/ a huge majority in the Senate, and they just start fighting each other, Taiwan-style.
Hopefully, they'll be so bruised and battered at the end of the day, that I'll be able to smoke outside in peace.

We all have our fantasies.....
Funny, I don't recall anything like that happening in the past 4 years. The only cuts we saw was an end to the school voucher program in DC.

"Awesome, so I'm still going to get mail destined for houses blocks away at the usual rate and quantity."
This is allied to the claim that POs are neighborhood gathering places.
Why, after our mail delivery human tosses mail randomly in various mail boxes, I get to wander up and down the street meeting my neighbors and swapping mail with them to get the stuff in the right hands.
I sent a letter off to a "business" in NJ using the street address on their website. Came back with a stamp from the PO noting that there was "no receptacle." After more digging I found out that the business had a PO box in the same post office that couldn't deliver the freaking letter.
"But, but, who else can deliver mail anywhere in the country for 41c?" Nobody, idiots.
What if they gave a war on drugs and nobody came?
"The Justice Department would continue work to protect national security, enforce criminal laws and combat drug trafficking and gun violence."
Continue? When did this Justice Dept start?
Great, so this is a fucking paid vacation for everyone who isn't a part of something that would actual piss off constituents. At least we'll know who to fire first when the libertarians take power.
"Now it's time for the easiest part of any coach's job: the cuts." - Homer S.
(Aside from most libertarian's belief that we shouldn't be funding them in the first place, of course, and not simply because of the abortion issue.)
Your question: it answers itself.
OMFG!
Without the FCC, how will the waves find their way from the satellite to my teevee?
"Okay, now I'm really pissed off."
I just have one question: am I getting my mo%rfu(@ing tax refund or not?
Or is pocketing everyone's refund part of the secret balanced-budget plan this year?
"You brought that shit upon yo'self"
I watched a little bit of Hardball earlier.
As usual, the nodders were busily deconstructing the politicians' tactical considerations while completely ignoring any substantive questions regarding the relative value or need for any of the "essential" government services currently in dire jeopardy.
And poor old reasonable rational Boehner is a hostage of the radical evul teabagsterdz.
I was watching Chuckie on CSPAN2 and he kept railing against ideology, as if it were such an awful thing. I kept getting flashes of "The Big Lebowski:"
"We are nihilists. We believe in nothing! Vote for my bill or I cut off your johnson."
The opposite of ideologue is not nihilist.
I feel obligated to follow up.
"Say what you will about National Socialism, Dude, but at least its a fucking ethos. Nihilists! Fuck me."
These things don't have to be perfect fits, Tony.
Chuck wasn't mad that the bill reflected an ideology, he was mad that it reflected an opposing one. That's what made his remarks dishonest and in turn made the hyperbolic comparison to the nihilists funny.
"You're out of your element, Donny."
"Our expectation is that it's not going to have a big impact," said LaDonna A. Pavetti, of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Well, it may seem like a larger impact if you're an active duty military family who suddenly has zero income.
Today's paper says the GOP controlled House passed a bill yesterday to fund service personnel pay for six more months.
Which the Pres. has promised to veto.
What happens if we need to invade someone? You know, just in case something comes up.
What happens if we need to invade someone? You know, just in case something comes up.
Invasions need to be more localized anyway. That's what the 2nd Amendment if for.
The main reason I can see why Boehner would want a shutdown--and let's face it, it takes two not to tango...?
Is to discredit the Tea Party, which has been a thorn in Boehner's backside since the day he took the gavel.
It's sort of like in Parliament, when the Prime Minister will threaten to call an election to whip the backbenchers in line? Because it's the backbenchers who will lose their seats in an election, not the MPs who are thoroughly entrenched?
I see this like that. If this goes well, the Boehner Brigade can only benefit, and if this goes poorly, it will only serve to discredit the Tea Party--which is the the biggest threat to the Boehner Brigade anyway.
Either way, I think Boehner figures he's gonna win.
Who's gonna kill all those Libyans?
The military still has to kill them. They just won't be getting paid for it.
So they go from mercenary assassins to just plain ol' murderers then?
Working pro bono.
They just won't be getting paid for it.
They'll be getting paid. They just won't be collecting immediately.
Hey Obama, You Do Realize That You're Responsible for the Shutdown if it Happens, Dontcha?
Soooo...
as a libertarian does that mean I should like Obama now?
Thank you for sharing, looking forward to your next article to write better, wish you a happy life.
Obama will do what Obama does best, throw a speech at it lol.

Thanks for a lot for this informations!
Nice going, Dems. Regardless of who voters end up blaming this time around, in your heart, you know you suck.
Please.
To a Democrat, this means nothing, and is unlikely to have any effect on future behavior.
"A huge backlog of applications for Social Security disability benefits would grow even larger, agency officials said."
What backlog. I applied for SS less than 6 weeks ago. Got the first check plus the retroactive one yesterday.
Let's treat all of this as an entertaining civics lesson. We are being given a demonstration of the power of the House of Representatives, you know, those guys who have to face the voters every two years.
So less Obama's fault and more Senate/House Dem's fault. But whatever.
So you're telling me that the only people effected by this "shutdown" are active duty military trying to do our freakin' jobs, protecting the douchebags like the DC rep who told us to "go to hell" and fighting the enemies of the current administration while NOT GETTING PAID FOR IT? Nice going, America. You suck. Once again, the great social experiment of the US military, that everyone gets to tamper with (ala DADT repeal) whether they ever served or not (ala our current CINC), we get dumped, but millions of welfare recipients who rely on Uncle Sugar to make sure their ultra-new cell phone plans are paid for, so they can drive away in their financed Buicks will be Okee-Dokee? So some E-5 with 2 kids and allotments can't even make his electric bill because he was ORDERED to go to work, paid or not, just because the CINC can do that? Is ANYONE else enraged? You should be... if you're not, you should be ashamed. But... you're probably not... because, as Andrew Clavan said... you suck.
And if there is not a shut down, then Obama deserves all the credit.
Kinda Lane|4.9.11 @ 3:11AM|#
"And if there is not a shut down, then Obama deserves all the credit."
So if someone saves his sorry butt, *he* gets the credit?
Kinda lame.
Based on this, here's a new budget proposal: STEP 1: cut any and all programs that aren't considered necessary during in a government "shutdown." STEP 2: reduce what remains as much as possible.
Hasn't even the USPS itself wanted to close small post offices for the past few years in order to save money? And they still can't do it even with the government shut down? Gosh, we suck.
