"Cheesehead Pharaoh" Cuts Budget, Unions Erupt
Union protesters are taking to the streets and Capitol hallways in Madison, Wisconsin this week, expressing their displeasure with the state worker reforms proposed by Gov. Scott Walker (R). The resulting hubbub suggests there is no limit to the tortured rhetoric these taxpayers' masters will employ to protect their privileged positions.
Christian Schneider's commentary at the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute (WPRI) is well-worth reading for his roundup of the absurdities Walker's opponents were already employing against the reforms last week, including an assertion that the governor would call in the National Guard on families (after Walker simply mentioned the possibility of using Guardsmen to staff prisons in the possibility of a strike). The Teamsters issued a press release comparing Walker to "Hilter." But state Sen. Spencer Coggs (D-Milwaukee) won the week with this beauty:
The ghost of Martin Luther King must be rolling in his grave when he anticipates in the state of Wisconsin we're going to have what, in effect, will be legalized slavery.
"Mubarak=Walker" signs and slogans appeared as well, with The Washington Post's Harold Meyerson dubbing Walker the "cheesehead pharaoh of the Middle West." According to this incoherent view, a democratically elected legislature requiring public employees to contribute to their pensions—a reform that 80 percent of Wisconsinites support—is akin to running an oppressive state for three-plus decades.
The protests resulted in 17 districts cancelling school today, as 40 percent of Madison-area teachers caught a nasty case of the entitlements. Organizing for America, the Obama campaign-in-exile, also had a hand in arranging protest logisitics. So much for post-partisanship.
So why all the fuss? Milwaukee's WTMJ breaks it down:
Walker's plan would make workers pay half the costs of their pensions and at least 12.6 percent of their health care premiums. State employees' costs would go up by an average of 8 percent. The changes would save the state $30 million by June 30 and $300 million over the next two years to address a $3.6 billion budget shortfall.
Unions could still represent workers, but could not seek pay increases above the Consumer Price Index unless approved by a public referendum. Unions also could not force employees to pay dues and would have to hold annual votes to stay organized. Local police, firefighters and state troopers would retain their collective bargaining rights.
As Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (R) pointed out this morning on MSNBC, these reforms would still leave state workers paying about half the health care premiums of private sector employees.

Uh, Josh?
See Tim's blog, just below.
The only thing that matters about this law is that it gratuitously exempts the police unions while hitting almost everybody else's unions in the public sector.
It is a disgusting sop to Police Elitism, and it pushes us even further along the path towards having a super-privileged "warrior class" that is "more equal" than the rest of us by virtue of their battering rams and riot shields.
Libertarians should be rejecting this out-of-hand. Instead, they are running like so many proverbial lemmings for the surf.
you.
Never.
LEARN.
They are next. Just don't tell them yet.
Mark my words, Scott Walker:
NO.
THEY.
ARE.
NOT.
The GOP is following the China model, wedding blood-on-the-tooth crony capitalism with a Sparta-esque elevation of the "warrior class" above the pathetic plebes. And the libertarians will go right along with it. Because they always get bitch-squeezed by the GOP, because they are just that easy.
I predict it now.
I stand by it.
Wait and see me proven right.
And yet the GOP filibustered and killed the federal law proposed that would have forced states to extend collective bargaining rights to only police and firefighters.
So, you're wrong, again. But you'll never learn, because you never do, and you never want to.
Continue reveling in your ignorance, Danny.

What's the alternative, Danny... using the Democrat model?
Fucked either way. Admit it.
Which makes it similar to about 10 to 15 other states. I think North Carolina and Virginia are the only two that ban collective bargaining by all employees.
Umm, no. Half a loaf and all that. A smaller super-privileged class of public employees is still better than a larger one.
And it sets a precedent.
"Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little"
Feh. Half a loaf, indeed. What's really going on is this: you and your brood letting the mask slip.
95% of libertarianism isn't about smaller government in any sense. It's about directing all government assets against the losers in the economic system as coercion and intimidation, while at the same time withdrawing all government assets that could be of any help or assistance to them.
Most libertarians wouldn't give two turds if our prisons were triple what they are now and the police commanded the streets like former East Germany, so long as nobody gets food stamps or Medicaid. It's not about liberty and its not about small government with you people. It's only about hating on the poor, debtors, and welfare.
And now your finally letting it show.

Cool story, bro.
I like your debating style. State your opinion as bold fact. If I don't present any supporting evidence, then I can't be disproven!
Danny, would you kindly explain how "public servants" are the 'losers' in the current economic system.
Do you actually fail to see how picking the police -- out of all the various sectors -- for elite treatment is a nakedly statist gesture?
Do you really think that the cops are wholly fungible with, say, nursery school teachers or hospital janitors or roadlight electricians, and that this policy is nothing but a random and incidental political accomodation?

The teachers have given up the beaucoup bucks they could be making (with their advanced degrees in education - chortle) in the public sector because they love teaching kids so much. Their only vice is their extreme commitment to children.

Better to end some of the corruption than none at all. It's like prop 18 in California. And ill-conceived poorly-devised approach to marijuana legalization but still better than status quo.
The lawmakers are in the Best Western Clock Tower Resort in Rockford Illinois.

Though they would probably prefer to be compared to the anti-authoritarian demonstrators in Egypt, a protest by Wisconsin "public servants" is really more similar to last year's demonstrations and riots in Greece.
The Wisconsin "public servants" are not advocating for change; they are protesting against it, preferring the status quo, and more of it.
A planned state Senate vote on slashing Wisconsin public worker pensions and curbing their unions stalled Thursday after Senate Democrats apparently fled the state.
The contentious vote was postponed because the 33-member Senate must have 20 present for a quorum and not a single Democrat attended. There are only 19 Republicans so at least one Democrat must be present for the Senate to open business.
Police have been sent out to look for the wayward lawmakers, the Associated Press reported. A source said it appeared that the Democrats had boarded a bus headed for Iowa.

I hope they return their paychecks for this week of not working.
Oh, right, getting paid to skip work to such an extent that your employer is forced to close for the day is what they want to let the teachers do.
If Walker's got any stones, he'll fine the Democrats the equivalent of their salary for the time they're not at work, and redistribute it to paying down the deficit.
Hit these parasites in their wallet and they'll be back in Madison quicker than a UW coed drops her panties at the frat-house party.
As if we wore panties.
I didn't see very many people of color in those crowds. They must be racists.
Yeah, where's the media watchdogs? The video shows lots of old, fat, white people yelling "kill the bill!" They're obviously a bunch of racist teabaggers...oh wait...
Dude, it's Wisconsin. There's like fifty people of color in the entire state, and all of them play for the Packers.

Dig the Hitler references, and the violent rhetoric... after being scolded by Obama on those very same no-no's.

Has any reporter been sexually molested yet? Oh, look, Cong. Giffords smiled when her husband held up a photo of Katie Couric.

Actually, the children are probably benefiting from the teachers' absence in more than the "day off" sense.

Several years back, there was a (not very credible) threat of requiring non-profits in San Francisco to actually account for their money.
It was immediately spun into a threat to fire special ed teachers at the various (overlapping) non-profits.
So, as I drive by the city funding agency office, I see what I presume are teachers handing signs to kids who aren't really capable of dealing with (among other things) the fine points of funding, and I am PISSED!
But they got camera time on local TV.
That's when it's fun to tape over your license plate, and go cruising with your paintball gun.
Or so I've heard...:)
I hope Gov. Walker has the balls to Reagan them:

Eh, I dunno, I never understood why union busting was a libertarian principle.
Handsome Dan|2.17.11 @ 7:35PM|#
"Eh, I dunno, I never understood why union busting was a libertarian principle."
I'll assume you're not a troll asking loaded questions:
Pretty sure I'm not alone in not really caring about people joining together in any form, including a union.
Similarly, I care very much that unions are legal entities with protections enforced by the power of the state.
If a union wants to negotiate with an employer, fine. If the employer doesn't want to negotiate with that union, equally fine. Fire those who don't wish to negotiate under the offered terms.
Got it?
Question (and this is a real question, not a trolling attempt):
What is the difference then between a union, and an LLC (group of people granted certain legal distinctions over a collection of private individuals)?
I would like it if unions were like an LLC. An association of people should be able to join together to offer a service and to negotiate collectively. No one is required by law to do business with an LLC, and that is the whole problem with unions.
Is this perfectly analogous? I mean, aren't LLC's mainly a way to shield capital investors from liability, as opposed to forming a unit with which to bargain? The only things that are similar are that they are:
1) comprised of individuals that form a group
2) given government recognition that is usually beneficial to each group
An LLC will get broken up by the government if it captures an entire industry?
There wouldn't be a difference if people were required to deal with the LLC.
I'd oppose that too.
The only legal distinction a LLC is given is that the losses of the individual investors are limited to only their investment.
What a lot of people don't realize is that creditors are perfectly entitled to ask for additional guarantees for repayment. I've known several small corporation owners who have had to personally guarantee loans. And at least one who was personally wiped out by it.
Furthermore the coercive powers of unions are magnified when they are "negotiating" in the public sector.
Politicians and unions are hardly engaging in an adversarial negotiation. Most public sector union agreements are sweetheart deals between cronies.
Because employers get absolutely no help from the government.
"What is the difference then between a union, and an LLC (group of people granted certain legal distinctions over a collection of private individuals)?"
No one is required by law to negotiate with an LLC for services or any form of payment.
It (and corporations) are given legal protection in that civic liability is limited to the investment, but that's pretty much the limit.
You can argue even that is not proper; I remain 'conflicted'.
Pretty sure I heard a bunch of voices saying "I WANT AN OOMPA LOOMPA NOW!" in that video.
I think what's the big damaging thing against Scott Walker is that he is sending forth this bill without much open-floor debate or little negotiation, plus the fact that he said he would call the National Guard on the state before anything even happened, and now he's having police chase down the non-present Democrats in the state to bring them into the floor in order to force the bill through for him to sign it.
Even if I were to agree with anything Walker is doing regarding the state budget, it just makes him look bad.
"Even if I were to agree with anything Walker is doing regarding the state budget, it just makes him look bad."
Only to those who sympathize with legislators leaving their offices to avoid their duty.
LOL! You're retarded.
He said he would use them to staff the prisons if there was a strike. Stop misquoting just to make him look bad.
Oh, I see!
This wasn't any sort of honest comment. It was one more asshole trying strawmen.
Hey, Brian! Stuff it up your butt!
Elections have consequences - Obama 2008. The people elected Walker to solve this problem.
He's putting a bill forth. If you don't like you don't vote for it.
Who do you want him to negotiate with? The Unions? They would rather pick and you know they don't want to give up anything. Dems? They ran from doing they elected jobs. It was fine for them doing what they wanted (WI, NY, Congress, etc) without negotiations for years right?
So you think it's fine that the Democrats can just run. I think it makes a mockery out Democracy.
Ok, I am probably going to get flamed to death for this but it would be nice if this site weren't the same kind of echo chamber that we are surrounded by. But, wouldn't it have been better for Scott Walker to just say look folks, this is what we can afford due to a budget crisis (which everyone can understand) and leave the union busting out of it. was that not possible? I am seriously asking here (not a troll).
If a group of works would like to get together to negotiate wages and benefits then that is their right but the other party should also have the right to look elsewhere for services.
Finally, the Dems fleeing the state was a bush league maneuver. Have the damn vote, lose and let the voters vote you in next time and see how you can solve the crisis.
As always both sides suck.
"leave the union busting out of it."
I guess I missed it; can you cite where Walker is union-busting?
Oh, and exactly what is "union busting"?
That's when the Pinkertons came in and gave those rioters who were crowding up the Madison statehouse a good sound thrashing.
alan|2.17.11 @ 9:46PM|#
"That's when the Pinkertons came in and gave those rioters who were crowding up the Madison statehouse a good sound thrashing."
You should read "Meet You in Hell"; the Pinkertons were mobbed by union thugs at Homestead (who were trespassing to do so) and acted in self defense.
And the author certainly has no love for business.
Had a neighbor when I spent a chunk of Summer in Florida one year who was an old grizzled, retired Pinkerton with the unfortunate name of George Bush (no relation he knew of) who pretty much told me the same thing.
"Unions could still represent workers, but could not seek pay increases above the Consumer Price Index unless approved by a public referendum. Unions also could not force employees to pay dues and would have to hold annual votes to stay organized. Local police, firefighters and state troopers would retain their collective bargaining rights."
Also, they could only negotiate for salary increases not benefits.
If people are allowed to organize and negotiate shouldn't they be allowed to negotiate for whatever based on what they think they can get?
"If people are allowed to organize and negotiate shouldn't they be allowed to negotiate for whatever based on what they think they can get?"
Yes, and the other side should be allowed to say "I'm not negotiating with a union".
Unfortunately, the law requires they do.
So, up yours, unions!
Agreed. It might have been better if he just focused on the financial pieces of the bill which seem totally reasonable and added that the state would now reserve the right to not accept the union's services.
Perhaps unions should be private enterprises. Perhaps there should be competing unions.
Also, if unions are bad then why exempt police and firefighters?
Also, if unions are bad then why exempt police and firefighters?
You shouldn't. The bill is not perfect just an improvment over the status quo.
"Perhaps unions should be private enterprises. Perhaps there should be competing unions."
What, like co-op temp agencies? That would be the middle ground, definitely. The main benefit is that selling labor would be treated like every other form of business, so they'd have to abide by open bidding rules on contracts and so on.
Would be interesting for the governor to say "State workers will still be unionized at the end of the day, but I'm giving several different unions the option to steal assfuck me's contract, if they offer a better deal and can attract the necessary workers."
If a group of works would like to get together to negotiate wages and benefits then that is their right but the other party should also have the right to look elsewhere for services.
In this case, because of the union the other part doesn't have the right to look elsewhere. Hence, the union busting.
These protesters are scum, parasites of the taxpayers who shouldn't even have unions in the first place. What's next? Unions for soldiers? Pay us $50,000 a year or we won't fight?
Reagan did the right thing when he fired the air traffic controllers, it's time to put those commies in their place. This is America, if you want to get rich do it in the private sector, but if your job is paid by my taxes, don't you dare ask me to finance a better lifestyle than the one I get.

If they were asking, it would be one thing.
However, they're demanding, and that's what I have a problem with.
Does writing all this stupid make your head hurt? Because it hurts my head to read such ignorance.
Oh, man, I just so hate ignorance don't you?
You know what we should do? Take up a collection to get tickets for the next Reason cruise for Danny and Rectal. They would make awesome company for our dear editors. Hell, I'm tempted to do it myself. Up for a cruise, rectal?
On a side note, a lot of Austin firefighters wouldn't mind if Rick Perry stripped them of collective bargaining. The reason? It would put them back on civil service and a no-bullshit hiring process.. Thus no city of Austin imposing their ridiculous diversity demands on the hiring process.
That is the thing about unions, the competant almost never like them even when they are in them. Go talk to old school auto workers sometime. The ones who actually cared about their companies and the industry. They usually hate the UAW and what they did to their companies more than the people around here do.
The same is true for the few teachers out there who actually give a shit about their jobs. They will almost always hate the NEA.
What about meeeee? Someone, look over here! Attacking unions! Getting protests! Look at me!
Goddamn cheeseheads, stealing my glory.
talk to rectal - she understands being ignored, guvnuh.
They may have been "inspired" by the New Jersey Supreme Court. Governor Christie declined to re-confirm one of the justices (as is his prerogative), and the Dems in the state legislature are refusing to hold (state) constitutionally required hearings on the replacement nominee.
Temporarily, a lower court judge is sitting in as a substitute. In response to that, one of the other justices is refusing to vote on any case, because he claims the sub should only be used if they don't have a quorum.
So we have TWO branches of government shirking their duty.
I don't admire Christie for this. There was no real reason to not reappoint Justice Wallace. Christie was just showing off.
Can't the taxpayers hire some Pinkertons to crack heads on those striking state workers?

Can't brain-dead ignoramuses come up with strawmen that aren't so obvious?
I guess not; they *are* brain-dead.
I was asking a serious question ya douchebags.
One other thing for the union defenders on here. Maybe if the unions hadn't completly abused their power and the public, I might listen to your arguments. But they have and they have driven every state they could into bankruptcy. And now when the public is finally waking up to the damage that has been done you come whinning around with the whole "can't we just work this out" like wife beating husband trying to keep his abused wife from calling the cops. No we can't just work things out. Fuck you. You people have stole enough. And you have clearly shown that you are not capable of doing anything but using any power you have to steal from the public. Sorry, the time for talking and working things out was ten years ago. Now the only sollution is to end public employee unions for good. If you don't like that, well you should have thought about this possibility when you were demanding and getting wages that the state would never be able to afford to pay.
Now the only sollution is to end public employee unions for good.
We need a Harry Bennett for the 21st Century!
No we need fewer ignorant leftist trolls who are allowed on wikipedia without adult supervision.
So you guys cheer for a guy who is trying to pay off his political cronies because he's trying to bust up unions?
"One Wisconsin Now, the progressive watchdog group that has provided the closest monitoring of Walker's budgetary gamesmanship, explains:
"Since his inauguration in early January, Walker has approved $140 million in new special-interest spending that includes:
"? $25 million for an economic development fund for job creation that still has $73 million due to a lack of job creation. Walker is creating a $25 million hole which will not create or retain jobs.
"? $48 million for private health savings accounts, which primarily benefit the wealthy. A study from the federal Governmental Accountability Office showed the average adjusted gross income of HSA participants was $139,000 and nearly half of HSA participants reported withdrawing nothing from their HSA, evidence that it is serving as a tax shelter for wealthy participants.
"? $67 million for a tax shift plan, so ill-conceived that at best the benefit provided to 'job creators' would be less than a dollar a day per new job, and may be as little as 30 cents a day.""
http://m.host.madison.com/mobi.....aaaf6.html
Yes, its biased and left leaning, but I thought Libertarians were for transparency and limited government, not cheering for the villain who just happens to take out some other bad guys in the process.
Walker's just a Dbag trying to pay off his backers.
Good bait and switch dipshit. No matter how bad the stuff you list is, that says nothing about the value of what he is doing to the public sector unions. Maybe he shouldn't do that stuff. But even if that is true, that doesn't mean he isn't right to finally do something about the unions.
The "something right" isn't about some noble ideal about limited government or the ethical responsibilities of the state. Walker deliberately created a state crisis in order attack his enemies. Come on, that's a police state action.
BTW, did the hiring hall send you?
Just a guy who tries to read and understand multiple perspectives. Overall, I think the columnists here are amazing writers who give thoughtful and challenging perspectives on issues I haven't given much thought on before, but the main reason to read the comment section here (and any other site) is how dumb some of it is at times. You guys are hilarious, if at times a bit, I don't know, hysterical? (The SeaQuest thread in particular was just odd, but then again, I don't know how serious you can take John Stossel at times.)
I won't comment much, partly because I care not to, and partly because trying to change another person's viewpoints especially when they're entrenched is foolhardy.
i think you should be reading over at yahoo.
What the?|2.18.11 @ 12:20AM|#
"Just a guy who tries to read and understand multiple perspectives."
Right:
"Walker deliberately created a state crisis in order attack his enemies."
Your fig leaf is even tinier than your thing.
So we judge actions based on intentions and anythign that doesn't achieve perfect limited government is not worth doing or supporting.
Of course since nothing is ideal, nothing is ever worth supporting. Odd how that works isn't it? Stop concern trolling. No one here is going to buy it.
There's the alternative argument that if we constantly are content with "half a loaf" as someone was commenting earlier, then we might as well give up the pretense and just announce that we vote party-line republican. I mean, they're USUALLY going to be better than the dems on economic issues, and if we're just openly going for the pragmatic answers, then we're just adjuncts for Team Red.
Vote for the person who gives you closest to what you want. And by your logic, liberals should have never voted Democrat in the 1960s because the Great Society wasn't the full on socialism they were hoping for. Bullshit, we got where we are incrementally. And we are going to get out one step at a time. And this is a good first step.
Stop concern trolling.
Um, it's an opinion, ass, and a lot of liberals DIDN'T vote dem in the 1960s (68, Chicago, anyone, anyone)? They were out in the streets PROTESTING a dem regime.
Ok, sorry I went off because I found your argument so lacking that I couldn't think straight. Let's go through this now:
Many liberals did not "vote democratic" in the late 1960s; they actively protested in the streets. We, now, are apparently too pussified to man the barricades against the riot squads like our supposedly cowardly forebearers did.
We HAVE been attached to the (R) trying to change it slowly from the inside for 30+ years now, and have NOT SUCCEEDED. So the argument that we'd be in the political wilderness without them doens't carry water, because we're in the fucking political wilderness already WITH them.
Ross Perot came damn close to making a viable 3rd party run 20 years ago. It CAN be done. But it takes a lot of work, a lot of organizing. It's a hell of a lot more work than just giving up and voting Team Red. Laziness on our part should not be an excuse to allow the 2-party dictatorship to remain wedged in our asses.
The Tea Party is probably the best we can hope for from a "change them from within" scenerio, and only a few of them actually stuck to their guns for more than a month; most voted to renew the Pat. Act. Only Rand seems to be interested in the ideals he was voted in on.
For those reasons, I do not believe that we're getting anywhere by tagging along with Team Red.
There's never a wrong time to bust unions.
If the union didn't want to get its ass handed to it, it should have learned to befriend both parties. As an effective arm of the DNC, the Republicans have zero incentive not to do as much damage to unions as possible.
There was a war. They picked a side. That side started losing. Now they're getting hammered too, and their allies are in no position to provide support. Shoulda learned from Wall Street -- they're like Switzerland, buddy up with everyone.

"...Walker deliberately created a state crisis in order attack his enemies..."
Oh, oh! Look! One more brain-dead ignoramus trying to offer strawmen!
How................
fucking stupid.
If you're going to have a Beer Hall Putsch, there's no better place than Wisconsin.
You know who else had a Beer Hall Putsch?
Louis XIV?
You should see readers of CNN.com frothing at the mouth over this. It's quite amusing if not so sad that people are so freakin' stupid.
To all of you putting this demonstration down. If you were state workers and had these benefits for years suddenly taken away.....you'd be down at the capital whining like little babies. Just because some are better off than you.... doesn't give you a reason to slam them. Should I be disrespectful like you have all been? Well perhaps some of you should have taken different routes in life. The latest video clips from TMZ http://fms.nu/ht8PXC I get the latest what happen. It will be helpful for them who want to keep in touch with updates always like me
