Bold bits mine. For those keeping score at home, the go-to two-word media descriptor of Holocaust shooter James Von Brunn was not "antigovernment gunman," but rather (and rather appropriately) "white supremacist," or "neo-Nazi." That's because he was this guy:

And I would go a little bit further than Rich's insincerely agnostic "we don't know" when it comes to whether this particular bit of "pre-Loughner violence" was inspired by Sarah Palin or Sharron Angle or Michele Bachmann. Given that Von Brunn's first attempt at ultra-violent Washington mayhem came in 1981, when he brought a sawed-off shotgun, revolver, and knife to the Federal Reserve in a bizarre plot to kidnap Zbigniew Brzezinski and Paul Volcker, about the only way to pin the basic formulation of Von Brunn's vicious nutbaggery on Sarah Barracuda is if the guy was a serious aficionado of high school girls basketball in Alaska.
As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, there just aren't many voices in America yelling (or even whispering) kill the Jews. But as Jesse Walker noted in his classic Reason piece "The Paranoid Center," which begins with a meditation on the uses of Von Brunn, there is no shortage of voices eager to pin the insane bigotries of selected murderers on entire populations of unconnected political actors. If Tea Party-inspired violence was as widespread as the Frank Riches of the world fear, then they probably wouldn't have to wrap so many unrelated assassins in the Gadsden Flag.

I'm not pro theocracy in any way, but I remember when that lady in Texas drowned her kids, because she thought that GOD was telling her to drown them in the bathtub one by one. Apparently she had some mental problems and was an avid church goer, so a lot of people made the argument that religion "does this" to people. I tried to point out to them that "crazy-religious" minus "religious" is still "crazy." Crazy people don't really need "good" reasons to do crazy things.

But antigovernment ramblings coming from outside the government are so sinister that they are sinister whether they are sinister or not. "And regardless of what led to the episode," Hulse and Zernike say, "it quickly focused attention on the degree to which inflammatory language, threats and implicit instigations to violence have become a steady undercurrent in the nation's political culture."
To maintain that there's a lack of evidence for such a sweeping statement would be inaccurate since Hulse and Zernike themselves are doing what they claim is being done. And given the tight deadlines of a Sunday edition they have focused their attention quickly indeed.
They make an interesting choice of verb tense in "have become." Maybe Hulse and Zernike are very young and, what with the way American history is taught these days, are unaware of riots, bombings, lynchings, exterminations of native peoples, assassinations, assassination attempts, gun fights, and the Civil War, not to mention the inflammatory language, threats, and implicit instigations to violence in the writings of Tom Paine.
Or maybe Hulse and Zernike are old hacks in the pocket of certain political interests that feel threatened by populism. A member of the populace? ? ?however deranged ? ??has shot a liberal ?? ?albeit one who is independent and selective in her liberalism. Even this most pathetic of excuses will serve.
