Cartoon "Self-Hatred" and "Viciousness"
The man who (apparently) says this….
In a larger sense there is a link between anti-government rhetoric and the actions of this obviously deranged man. He is not "troubled", he is crazed. But he knows that the larger enemy is the "government", even though I suspect he has no idea, other than the police, what the government is. So in my experience, there is plenty of linkage, the linkage of a constant steady pressure, constant yammering on right wing radio, and constant political advertising to strike at the government, linking to a weak and distracted mind, inured to the real cost of violence by video games and super-violent films. And to this the easy availability of Glocks in a state like Arizona, and the result is more than predictable. Only willful political opportunism could blind anmyone [sic] to it. This same connection drove Timothy McVeigh and others. This won't, I regret to say, be the last incident, not as long as the self-hatred in this country goes unanswered. […]
The disgusting part is the lack of inclination to blame the people untimately [sic] responsible. They are again being given a pass for the viciousness they have engendered, at least in part.
Draws this….
What's especially delicious is that the cartoon is an illustration for this George Will column, which (to put it mildly) arrives at a different conclusion (and is well worth your attention).
Is there a word, preferably in German (note: not for Nazi connotations, but for making-word-longness and comical umlauts), for the kind of self-unawareness that declaims violence-tinged hyperbole by portraying a big chunk of the American population as complicit in murder? Read the whole (alleged) Danziger exchange with an objecting reader here. Related Danziger art cartoonery below:

Wait, what's wrong with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man one? This Mr. Stay Puft's okay! He's a sailor, he's in New York; we get this guy laid, we won't have any trouble!
The rest, OTOH, are abhorrent.
I like the tea partiers stomping on the elephant one.
It looks like an anti-Irish political cartoon from the 19th century.
But 'twas all in good fun.
It does. And frankly it is not that bad and pretty damned funny actually.
I think we need to follow Warty's lead and post more images of kittehs. (probably the only time I will say that with a straight face)
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it SEIU thugs who beat people up at TEA party rallies? I don't recall any actual TEA party supporters beating anyone up at a rally ...
I think it's in reference to an alleged "curb stomping" at a Rand Paul event.
It is dated 14SEP. Isn't that a bit early for the Rand Paul event? I think it is more likely a metaphor for what the Tea Party was doing to members of the Republican Party who weren't having a "come to Jesus" moments about Tea Party-style economics.
The fact that they are stomping an elephant would seem to support this interpretation.
Is there a word...for the kind of self-unawareness that declaims violence-tinged hyperbole by portraying a big chunk of the American population as complicit in murder?
I believe the word is "prescient," if we go by the cartoons he drew beforehand. He seems to have nailed this one.
STEVE SMITH NAIL CARTOONS! STEVE SMITH LIKE RAPE CARTOONS! STEVE SMITH RAPE BEFORE HAND!
STEVE SMITH INCITED BY POLITICAL RHETORIC TO RAPE JANE JETSON! AND SCOOBY DOO!
STEVE SMITH RAPE FOREHAND TOO!
I know it wasn't rape-rape. I think it was something else, but I don't believe it was rape-rape.
You're a fucking retard if you're arguing this shooting was rooted in anything other than a personal obsession arising from untreated schizophrenia. His incoherent "political" obsessions weren't a product of the political environment, they're a common symptom of his illness.
This.
Thank you Rahm E.
I believe the word is "prescient," if we go by the cartoons he drew beforehand. He seems to have nailed this one.
And statements like this is why everyone here ridicules you, you open-mouthed mossback shitstain.
Sarah Palin -----> snuffs 9 year old girl in AZ with her bare hands
Sarah Palin -----> crushes cute kittehs and puppehs under her high heels
Also ----> GROUNDZEROMOSQUE!!!!1
Reason ----> refuses to acknowledge this = "blood on hands"
That is all
from the Will column:
This also explains Adbusters.
You mean you don't buy Adbusters sneakers? Their perfect for crushing corporate propaganda don't you know.
Adbusters is hilarious. And scary that they're still in print.
Danzinger's sucked ever since the Misfits broke up.
However watching my mom play Mother on Guitar Hero was priceless.
Is there a word, preferably in German...
cockbitegemachtichlingensteinrechtung?
OK, I just made that up...but you're right, Matt, the Deutsch can put together some EPIC long words to describe things.
You must capitalize!
I don't know of an actual German word for that, but I'm happy to make one up for you. Das Blindend?fus -- one who condemns people for doing exactly the same thing he's doing himself.
It's a wonder he ever gets out of the laundry room, what with all that pants-shitting and bed-wetting.
I'm sorry to say, but I believe these cartoons do manage to achieve a level of humor greater than the Friday Funnies.
Then again, so do pictures of dead puppies.
As soon as I got to the paragraph about how his service in Vietnam meant he was beyond criticism I knew Danziger had lost the exchange.
I also like how he tossed out two medals her received, and that he earned a battlefield commission, right before the faux humble "That probably means less to me than to others..."
If his service in Vietnam was unimportant to him, he wouldn't be reading off his 214 to someone who contacted him.
That would be like me responding to someone who disagreed with my opinion about, oh, the value of RBIs in baseball with "Well, during my service in the War on Terror I received four Commendation Medals and was promoted to Sergeant First Class, which is a senior Noncommissioned Officer rank."
right before the faux humble "That probably means less to me than to others..."
Gawd. *barf*
I was a Pipe Sergeant in a Grade 1 pipe band during the War on...Ontario Piping Contests.
But that probably means less to me than to others...
I'm of an age when someone bragging about a medal earned in Vietnam was returned with a comment about the guy being to stupid to avoid service.
alotta guys were killed & maimed in the service so almanian could post stupid $hit like that.
You have a long way to go before you'll match our long term trolls.
Is there a "minor league" blog where he can practice his trolling before jumping in with the big boys over here? Suggestions?
YouTube banned him. He wasn't up to their usual standards.
Geez, that's pretty harsh.
Step up your game, son.
I can't take OhioOrrin's trolling seriously. His txt-style writing is just too reminiscent of a 12 year-old girl.
Rindfleischetikettierungs?berwachungsaufgaben-
?bertragungsgesetz?
Nice use of fleische
Rindfleisch alone is a great word.
I read that word aloud, but someone subtitled me as ranting about being banned from Xbox Live.
Dimwitted conservatives and corporate-whore libertarians will continue to turn a blind eye to European nations that have successfully taken measures to prevent this kind of violence.
Only in right-wing America do we have this kind of violence against government.
Oh wait....shit.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/201.....nt_strikes
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12.....itain.html
You speak as if violence against government is a bad thing.
Expect a visit from us soon. Er, I mean, don't expect a visit.
Ok, so:
a) Talk Radio, and
b) Political Ads, and
c) Video Games, and
d) An availability of guns, and
e) A weak mind...
... gives a potentially hazardous combination! Never mind if the guy's mind was actually weak or not.
So is one to infer that taking guns away from all people is justified because people are weakminded, pliable videogamers? I don't get it...
so facing the gun violence which continues to ravage our country is tantamont to "taking guns away from all people"?
I didn't realize we were being "ravaged". Why don't you check out Mexico if you want to see "ravaged"?
obviously u aint been shot, or shot at.
What's your point? There are 300 million people in this country. Nowhere near a third have been shot or shot at, so no, we are not being "ravaged".
This is the worst trolling ever.
agreed so why'd u post?
Ohio-whore-hen's guide to Definitional Retreat:
Use a vague phrase that suggests some gross over-application of government power:
"We need to face the gun violence which continues to ravage our country."
Wait for someone to object, one who gets around your vague wording by stating plainly what your vague wording suggests:
"So is one to infer that taking guns away from all people is justified because people are weakminded, pliable videogamers?"
Yes! Now's your opportunity to use Definitional Retreat!:
'so facing the gun violence which continues to ravage our country is tantamont to "taking guns away from all people"?'
I suspect Ohio-whore-hen works for Reason's degenerate sister magazine, Emotion.
got a prob w the space/time continuim? old mex posted BEFORE i did.
The first statement is implicit in your response. You were responding as though you had said that first; so was I.
"...facing the gun violence..."
Sniff, sniff. Yep, stinks of 'we'll call it something before we just pass a law'
This year Los Angeles recorded the lowest murder rate in fifty years. Doesn't sound like ravaging to me.
I must admit that my inability to beat Double Dragon (NES) without cheat codes has often driven my to violence. Typically directed at an innocent coffee table or friend within controller striking distance.
c) Video Games, and
But I thought Assassins Creed had a left wing bent to it.
Good that he left out Warren Ellis and his two comics that depicted Bush getting assassinated.
There is no question as to Ellis's progressive political leanings.
Or maybe Verleumdung? That's just plain defamation, I believe.
Is that Charlie Crist shooting from a ceramic container with No Label?
Whoa, Danziger starts to unhinge at the end of the exchange.
In the end the government has GOT to work. We are in competition with the world. Car companies don't compete. nation now compete. And these asses want to go back to the 1700?s. I've written enough. The whole thing is probably unstoppable except with another dumb war. That's what usually happens. You can have it.
That's great stuff.
That sounds - dare I say - rather Loughneresque
Does Danziger play video games?
JUST LEAVE DANZINGER ALOOOONE!!!!!
/blonde unisex douche
So, he's a fascist.
Did you guys see this quote from that stark raving anti-government Danziger guy? He should be stopped before his inflammatory language gets somebody killed.
...end the government...And...go back to the 1700's. I've written...The whole thing...unstoppable another war[!!!!1!!](punctuation in brackets added by editor)
One could almost pity his squalid, conspiratorial thinking if he weren't such a loathsome piece of shit.
In the end the government has GOT to work. We are in competition with the world. Car companies don't compete. nation now compete. And these asses want to go back to the 1700?s.
We agree! Except we'd like to go back to the 1500s.
ausgemachter Heuchler -- consummate hypocrite.
Maybe "ausgemachter Heuchler," which translates as consummate hypocrite
The exchange is blocked by the pussies that control my corporate networks.
So did Danziger by pwned by an unwashed heathen from the real world?
Completely
Not that he noticed. He just continued defending his view that the right, because of their demonization of the left, is "responsible" for killing those people because they subconsciously influenced the killer. No, he does not offer proof that it was politically fueled and no he does not seem to realize that he is demonizing the right with depictions of them as crazed killers and that he would, by his own criteria, be guilty of anything that is done to anybody on the right until he's proven innocent of influencing anybody which, of course, can't be proven. But he does remind the angry writer that he served in Vietnam, so there's that.
Decisively.
Hell if i asked Shrike a direct question for evidence he would at least explain it or at least try.
Danziger instead just crumbled under one simple question. "Provide evidence?" into an incoherent rant.
"I know because I know...and 1700s!!!...and war is coming!!!"
Maybe ausgemachter Heuchler, which means consummate hypocrite.
G?tterdanzigerung
Bravo.

Re: German:

Comesoutloose.
Don't EVER do that again. I have synasthesia and that word made me soil myself.
I'm lost, what does a squirt gun have to do with anything?
Is there a word, preferably in German (note: not for Nazi connotations, but for making-word-longness and comical umlauts), for the kind of self-unawareness that declaims violence-tinged hyperbole by portraying a big chunk of the American population as complicit in murder?

Or, if you prefer something shorter: Kr?gmanfreude.
Ooh, nice.

I think "Krugman" and "joy" are antonyms, actually. 🙂
That's kind of the point.
*Whimper*
I watched a few minutes of the ED! show, yesterday. He came on braying about how this guy Loughner was obviously in the thrall of rabid crackpot antigovernment rhetoric.
Then, in his own defense, he says, "You've never heard ME on THIS SHOW talking about tearing down the government!"
QED, you bitter hillbilly bible thumpers!!!!
hmm is correct. Kitty!
That is freakin' awesome.
Awww! Thanks, Warty!
I think we need the video of the kitten who spreads out his paws when the person does.
Plus the one of the 2 year old being jumped by cat from the bushes.
SURPRISE KITTEN!!!!
One of the better internet memes.
RAAAARRRRRR!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
I like the remix with the Conan music.
Wait is that cat wearing a cock ring?
Goddammit, Warty.
The left sooo wants this nutjob to be part of the right, influenced by the right, pushed over the edge by the right, etc. it's fucking pathetic.
Memo to team blue fanboys - Go back to blaming Citizens United for your recent electoral butt whipping. Right now you are loudly displaying the hypocritical, self-serving, foolish partisan crap that the majority of thinking Americans recognize and despise in both major parties.
I've actually been surprised that my lefty friends have been actually repulsed by the partisan mouthshit-spewing from over the weekend.
There's hope yet.
It turned MNG off. It is a bad tactic.
I wonder what joe thinks. Anyone doubt he's using it himself in whatever blog he went to after Epi eviscerated him?
Here you go.
On the surface that looks like a fairly insightful comment, albeit from a clearly partisan viewpoint. As long as, of course, you follow his mis-direction and ignore the fact that during the supposedly value-neutral discussions of violent rhetoric, Palin, Limbaugh, Beck and the Tea Party are constantly mentioned. When you look at the whole picture, joe's bullshit is apparent.
Also, he conveniently ignores WHO is conveying the message "Hate speech doesn't belong in politics."
More where that came from
Thanks for posting that. You can be sure that any misguided nostalgia I felt for joe has been strangled in the cradle.
Since drawing a gun sight over the general geographic location where they are on a stylized map is the same as murdering someone, I assume Danziger will be arrested for genocide sometime later today?
Poaching, more likely, elephants being endangered and whatnot.
I wish you'd visit more often. Not just on holidays.
Aww shucks. Did you guys ever get Epi fixed?
No, but we've continued to break him in some very interesting ways.
prefer a mushroom cloud?
Be careful. All this texting might make you too tired to fingerbang your mom tonight. You know she gets cranky if you miss Ass Blast Tuesday.
sick mind.
Well, you got something right today!
Oh, you really are new around here, aren't you.
I know. Kinda cute.

Hmm, I'll have to try that. I usually use white wine.

People just don't have a basic understanding of mental disorders such as schizophrenia. (Which by the way is NOT multiple personality disorder.) These disorders cause many to believe that the government is out to get them. And they must do something about it. Thankfully, most of the time it doesn't end up with these mass shootings (otherwise, they'd be on the news everyday).
Ignorance of mental health issues is more of a cause of last Saturday's shooting than political rhetoric.
Thing is, I'm mostly ignorant about mental health, but I still have some vague sense of the symptoms and effects of paranoid schizophrenia. Why the hell is the establishment media so ignorant? Either their ignorance is a pretense to serve their ulterior motive of exploiting a tragedy to promote a pernicious political agenda (ie, assaulting the speech of the political opposition), or else they're self-evidently unqualified to do their fucking jobs.
I vote both.
Oh, if this had been an obvious leftie who attempted to kill a conservative, the media would be telling us ALL ABOUT the horrible symptoms of schizophrenia and how this poor man needed help and shouldn't be blamed for anything.
Which is especially odd considering that's kind of what it was.
Shush you, she has a D by her name. Federal judge what?
There isn't a doubt in my mind that we will be hearing about how Obamacare would have helped this poor soul.
Is there a word, preferably in German for the kind of self-unawareness that declaims violence-tinged hyperbole by portraying a big chunk of the American population as complicit in murder?
Scheinheiligkeit.
Since no one's said it yet, shut the fuck up, Jeff Danziger.
Of course you would be the one to forment violence, you tea-party rightwing scum. You are worse than Hitler.
I AM DRAWING A TARGET ON A MAP OF YOUR HOUSE RIGHT NOW.
For nonpayment of PA state income tax.
That was a disturbing ad campaign.

Blonde pussy? Like this?
Warning! Not shaved!
He is not terribly interested in that cat dancer. My orange guy goes nuts for it, though.
A little catnip would perk him up.
In a larger sense there is a link between anti-government rhetoric and the actions of this obviously deranged man. He is not "troubled", he is crazed. But he knows that the larger enemy is the "government", even though I suspect he has no idea, other than the police, what the government is.
This might be the stupidest thing I've read today. Following this line, Minarchists and the Shining Path are one in the same because both are "opposed to the government" (nevermind that one wants to lessen the size of government overall and the other usually wants to take it over and expand its control).
Or, to condense it for the poor imbecile Danzinger, not everything the government does is good, and not all opposition to the government is bad.
Then don't read the rest of his conversation. It heaps on more piles of stupid the farther it progresses.
In response to "Finally, I must take issue with your statement that there is a "lack of inclination to blame the people ultimately responsible." At this point, the only person responsible for this action is the guy who pulled the trigger." he writes:
That's some grade-A choice stupid right there....
Don't you understand? And Mcveigh was reading that crazy shit from the enbd times or whagtever it is called.
As you can see, this is violent rhetoric. You can tell by the alkaline levels that Danziger has possession of some weapons-grade Stupid, probably from Chad or Niger.
Were he proficient in the use of TUBES, he would know that, according to McVeigh, he blew up the Murrah building as "revenge" for the Clinton Administration did to the Branch Davidians at Waco.
"You can tell by the alkaline levels that Danziger has possession of some weapons-grade Stupid, probably from Chad or Niger."
YellowFlake
You can tell by the alkaline levels that Danziger has possession of some weapons-grade Stupid, probably from Chad or Niger.
I was thinking Chad or Shriek. I haven't seen this new troll "Niger" yet.
Careful.... racist.
I think you mean "slae".
One thing is true though. He's written enough.
Obviously we should tone down the rhetoric and simply push fake documents about a sitting president through a political partisan on a national news broadcast. That's the responsible, and nonvitriolic thing to do.
Seems to me there were comments about deserters being shot during that particular fake controversy. Must not have actually happened, since the left would never do such a thing.
From Jacob Weisberg today, a looneytoon argument that government must be sacrosanct, or we will all perish.
At the core of the far right's culpability is its ongoing attack on the legitimacy of U.S. government?a venomous campaign not so different from the backdrop to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Then it was focused on "government bureaucrats" and the ATF. This time it has been more about Obama's birth certificate and health care reform. In either case, it expresses the dangerous idea that the federal government lacks valid authority. It is this, rather than violent rhetoric per se, that is the most dangerous aspect of right-wing extremism.
In either case, it expresses the dangerous idea that the federal government lacks valid authority.
I can tell that the idea that the feds might exceed their "valid authority" under the Constitution is completely foreign to Weisberg.
If I were a Muslim, I'd be rioting...
not in arizona. ud just be shot...
pffffffft
That last cartoon is interesting, and to me, unintentionally funny on several levels.
We have the "teabaggers" stomping the elephant which of course represents the GOP. If we see the 'teabaggers' as an internal, grassroots subgroup of the GOP, they're essentially engaged in an internal battle.
Based on the comments of the Donkey/Dem characters, it suggests that Democrats brook no internal dissent or diversity of opinion lest they lose power.
I thought the point of the last cartoon was that the Democrats are not conservative because they find populism so abhorrent, but the Republican, being conservative, is forced to listen to the uninformed prejudices of the rabble.
It would have been funnier if he he had drawn in the back ground Pelosi with a whip trying to keep a couple of snarling blue dogs at bay perhaps with a third whimpering off the panel.
^^this too^^
We are not in court. I have been watching the development of this combination of loons and opportunists since it started. The Tea Party, the very name is ridiculous. Crazed fat people tortured by their lack of success in life, following the absolute worst of our politicians. Palin, Angel, Quayle's rotten kid. These people are your choice for anything? The whole thing is based on unreality. Don't you understand? And Mcveigh was reading that crazy shit from the enbd times or whagtever it is called.
In the end the government has GOT to work. We are in competition with the world. Car companies don't compete. nation now compete. And these asses want to go back to the 1700?s. I've written enough. The whole thing is probably unstoppable except with another dumb war. That's what usually happens. You can have it.
Talk about troubled.
Anyway cartoonists are not payed for their deep comprehension of politics. They are payed to exaggerate and invent drama.
I'm shocked that Danziger said those things. As a political cartoonist myself I've always assumed for the most part (despite political camps) cartoonists turn on who deserves to be turned on and deep down the main objective is to make a clever and funny point if possible. Not all are funny, but it's sad when some take their cartoons so seriously as to become vicious and irrational as Danziger was in that exchange. Paul Conrad as great a cartoonist as he was also seemed incredibly partisan to a fault in interviews. Whenever I got angry emails when I worked at my college paper, I would just reply with "thank you for your comments" and leave it at that.
Let me say that assembling this German word is a bit tough so my proposal only rougly resembles what you wanted but here you go dear Reason:

You're welcome.
German is the greatest possible language in a world of great languages.
Liberals have a great imagination. Too bad those who disagree with liberals don't actually do what liberals imagine. Hey, recall those Anti-Austerity protests in Greece -- 3 bank workers were killed and one was a pregnant woman.

Oh and what about the liberal that cowardly uses an accident to assault a person with hot coffee.

Never heard about this on the media be - doesn't fit the narrative of the "peaceful" liberal, i guess.
The AZ shooter was rejected by the military for drug use. He has a history of drug use. It's quite possible that this is a good example of what drugs to one's brain -- more than a case of existing mental illness.
constant yammering on right wing radio, and constant political advertising to strike at
