The Republicans aren't likely to take the Senate, but NBC, CBS, CNN, and Fox are all projecting a GOP majority in the House. So you can count divided government, with its limited but real advantages, as one of the victors tonight.

Best case scenario - a GOP House for fiscal constraint and a Dem Senate and President to support a civil/personal liberties SCOTUS.

    1. John   15 years ago

I guess that would be, if you had a different president and Senate. As it is we have a President who puts contracts out on Ameican citizens and is at war with Pakistan.

      Take your meds Shrike.

    2. Bingo   15 years ago

Dem Senate and President to support a civil/personal liberties SCOTUS.

CAN WE PLEASE STOP WITH THIS FUCKING FICTION?

Barack Obama is as bad if not worse than Bush on civil liberties. Period. There is no difference between the two parties in that matter.

Oh wait, it's shriek with his pro-Dem blinders on, so they get a pass on everything bad the Republicans do.

      1. shrike   15 years ago

Bullshit. The Bushies denied Americans had a right to Habeas corpus. The Patriot Spy Act would never be hatched by the Dems.

Not to mention the whackjobs who deny the Right to Privacy and contraception rights.

Fucking asshole Republicans want to stop private stem-cell research in some cases.

        1. John   15 years ago

And the Democrats took the Presidency and a sixty vote majority in the Senate and proceeded to leave those things in place and do even more crazy shit.

          Seriously Shrike, get some help.

        2. Joe M   15 years ago

Seriously, noting how bad the GOP is on civil liberties doesn't mean the Dems are good, or even better. They suck just as hard.

        3. Jordan   15 years ago

Why don't you take a look at the vote on the Patriot Act renewal?

          1. Mr. FIFY   15 years ago

Someone ask shrike how many Dems voted against the initial Patriot Act passage.

I'd do it, but he's a fucking prick.

            1. Anonymous Coward   15 years ago

              63. 62 in the House, 1 in the Senate (the now late, unlamented Senator Russ Feingold).

              1. Southerner   15 years ago

                Ha ha!

    3. Kristen   15 years ago

I feel bad for you. I know you don't want my pity, but you have it.

    4. Sanjuro Tsubaki   15 years ago

You f***ing idiot. Obama has done nothing to support civil liberties much less fight corruption. He's potentially worse than Bush. Presidents are too powerful and congressional Republicans have no backbones. We would have had a true divided government if Republicans took both houses. Screw the columnists who finally got their so-called "divided government" long after the left nationalized health care and screw the voters who helped keep incumbents in office by voting for Libertarian rubes.

    5. Sanjuro Tsubaki   15 years ago

...and don't get me started about how the Democrats can screw up our courts with the Senate left in Obama's control.

    6. Psychic Octopus   15 years ago

Like Sotomayor and Kagan are great on civil and personal liberties?

  2. Andrew Lynch   15 years ago

I'll take divided government any day. I'm not sure when gridlock became a dirty word in politics, but it's the most delightful thing to wake up to in the morning. Aside from applewood smoked bacon and pastured eggs over medium.

My favorite part is that we'll now see a whole lot less of Nancy Pelosi.

    1. ?   15 years ago

Delightful indeed. But your idyllic breakfast left out strong black coffee and toast. And Rachel Maddow's man-hands being forced to do the dishes as Keith Olbermann slopped the hogs.

    2. jester   15 years ago

Gridlock is a negative only when it pertains to traffic because rent-seekers haven't spent the gas-tax the way it was 'sold' to the people.

Otherwise, gridlock sounds like something I'd order off a Denny's menu.

      1. alan   15 years ago

gridlock au jus, sounds good to me.

        1. jester   15 years ago

Griddle Lox au Jew? Sounds more like kosher to me.

          1. alan   15 years ago

Griddled? Sounds Southern and Jewish. Well, I live just outside of Greensboro, the home of John Isner and the old money blue blood neighborhood is named Irving Park.

      2. AlmightyJB   15 years ago

I'll take it too. Beats the alternative anyways. BTW...Libertarians have been pulling some pretty impressive numbers in several state level races in Ohio. 5% Auditor, Sec of State, and Treasurer. Add the Libertarian and Constitution party votes for Attorney General and you're at 6% for that. Nothing to jump up and down about but maybe something to build on. Certainly better numbers then I recall seeing in the past. Not doing so grand in the Governor's race but he really wasn't a very good candidate.

    Gridlock

  4. alan   15 years ago

One disappointment in my own predictions. I thought the Obama years would usher in a golden era of public drunkeness, but two years in, Paula Abdul is no longer on American Idol. I'm watching ABC and every damn commentator except Diane Sawyer is stone cold sober.

    1. Bingo   15 years ago

Give it time. Twitter is indicating an increase in hard liquor sales by registered Democrats for at least tonight.

    2. Anonymous Coward   15 years ago

NBC is even better. The talking heads are tripping over themselves to see who can get in the most "Bush's fault"'s before the local news comes on.

      1. AlmightyJB   15 years ago

Glad I'm not watching. Can't say I'm surprised though. I remember after the '94 elections how we were all "a bunch of spoiled little children throwing a temper tantrum" by throwing out the dems back then:) These f#$^&n' guys.

  5. alan   15 years ago

Blumenthal won? And we libertarians get called inhuman?

    1. Episiarch   15 years ago

Ah, crap. I thought he would, but fuck.

    2. SIV   15 years ago

Nutmeg Staters prefer to be ruled by the upper class. Even if the royal is a creepy lying dude.

  6. Caleb Turberville   15 years ago

Well, the Democrats are blaming the results on voter ignorance...of how great the last two years have ACTUALLY been.

Forgive them Obama, for they know not what they do!

    1. jester   15 years ago

Democrats rely on voter ignorance all the time (DISCLAIMER: not that Republicans don't either.)

      1. Caleb Turberville   15 years ago

But why would these douches go on air after they've had their asses handed to them and proclaim that their failure was due to voters being unaware of the Democrats awesomeness and not that Democratic policies are unpopular.

        Jesus, WHAT DOUCHES!

        1. AlmightyJB   15 years ago

Why, after you regain power, would you make the most far-left nut job speaker of the house and let her set the agenda for your party unless you wanted to have your ass handed to you the next election? That's the real question.

        2. jester   15 years ago

In keeping things clear the DNC is one giant douche. Many douches cling to this collectivist entity and vote on command. They go on air to voice that their agenda is so fucking smart that only evil Republican propoganda could have 'stolen' an election.

So I say: 'Why have elections Mr. or Mrs. Democrat?' Pun intended.

  7. Poll   15 years ago

Will honkies ever go back to the donkies?

    1. Sanjuro Tsubaki   15 years ago

They never left. But as for the honkies that don't vote Democrat, you should thank them.

  8. Episiarch   15 years ago

My major wish list for this election was:

    1. Gridlock (that's looking like yes)

    2. Prop 19 passes (we just don't know yet)

    3. Washington state liquor privatization (won't know for a few days)

    4. Bill Gates Sr.'s fucking WA income tax on people making $200,000 or more gets shot down (no idea)

    5. Blumenthal losing (looks like that's a no)

So far, one seeming yes, one seeming no, and three total unknowns.

    1. jester   15 years ago

My major wish list for this election:

      1. Hottie precinct canvasser knocks on my door...

      1. Cunctator   15 years ago

        And then???
