Government Compromise: Cut Less of Everything!
NASA likely to be spared much of the ax, as reported by the Houston Chronicle via Boston.com:
The acrimonious political schism between the White House and Congress over NASA's manned space program is expected to end tomorrow with a compromise that provides President Obama the funding for commercial spacecraft while Congress will preserve NASA-built systems for deep space exploration.
The deal crafted by two of the leading NASA supporters — Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Republican of Texas, and Senator Bill Nelson, Democrat of Florida — could blunt expected cuts at Houston's Johnson Space Center and the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla.
The House is scheduled to vote tomorrow to adopt the Hutchison-Nelson arrangement, which would scrap some of NASA's marquee back-to-the-moon program, extend operations of the orbiting space station, and add one last space shuttle flight. It would also hand the White House 75 percent of the $812 million sought next year to support a burgeoning commercial spacecraft industry.

Senators from Texas, Florida Craft Deal to Continue Federal Largess in Texas, Florida
The deal crafted by two of the leading receivers of NASA supporters pork

It's shocking that federal tax dollars are being shifted to the states. How long has this been going on, and why are we letting them get away with it?
What's truly galling is that they dump money into the NASA jobs program in the name of space exploration, yet here we are barely able to piddle around in LEO.
Get NASA out of the transportation business. If need be, allow it to continue a role in providing seed money for various initiatives and maybe let it stay involved in supporting space science.
These suggestions aren't optimal, of course. Optimal would be getting the government out of space transportation altogether, with the possible exception of the military, because American star destroyers would so rule.
Only if we get the artificial gravity working. Otherwise it really makes no sense to build a ship that will never ground with an 'up' and a 'down'. Personally, I could never figure out why they didn't just attack them from the bottom, where there where basically no guns.
Why not just have them powered by the Force? Jedi Engineers!
I already know a couple engineers who claim to practice Jediism, without much practical effect as yet. I wouldn't trust them to design my airlocks.
NASA keeps doing colonoscopies . . . to the taxpayers. That's what "deep space exploration" is code for.
Detect and deflect killer asteroids.
