Pollster Scott Rasmussen Talking Midterms With Glenn Instapundit Reynolds

Over at PJTV, Glenn Reynolds talks with pollster Scott Rasmussen, who is also coauthor of a new book, Mad as Hell: How the Tea Party Movement is Fundamentally Remaking Our Two-Party System.

It's a good conversation that nails some of the reasons why the Dems are dimming (health care, imperious rule, deficit spending, etc.) and why the GOP can still blow their lead (because they are who they are).

  1. I’m not sure why people are so quick to let Obama off the hook for his presidency. Rasmussen hints to it there, with his comment about Obama having to deal with established liberal Democrats when he took office.

The fact of the matter is that Obama got to the White House and, rather than dealing with the actual problems that existed (that he “inherited”), he set about the agenda he had long planned regardless of what the country needed from his presidency. His ideological blinders are what created the Tea Party Movement.

I was under the impression that the TPM was created to harness the momentum from a pretty good showing by Ron Paul (popularity and fundraising-wise), well before Obama even won the dem nomination.

      1. I’ve been pegging the CNBC Rick Santelli on-air freakout as the starting point of the current TPM, but I could be off the mark. Far be it from me to keep Paul from his props.

        1. Considering the first “modern” tea party was a RP fundraising event in 2007….

      2. Nah. Ron Paul was just the handiest figurehead for a long-brewing populist anti-big-government movement. With him out of the way, people who recognized he was a loon felt free to join in. Those who thought Paul and Paulistas meant anything in and of themselves weren’t paying attention beforehand.

what is the difference between figurehead and leader here? Just your anti-Paulism. You are right that he didn’t create the movement, the movement found him. But that is because he is one of the few congressmen who walks the walk, instead of just talking the talk.

Those who thought Paul and Paulistas meant anything in and of themselves weren’t paying attention beforehand.

bullshit. I’ve been paying attention for quite a while. And having one guy willing to do the right thing even when everybody is calling him crazy does mean something, in my opinion. QED.

    2. I totally agree.Obama could not care less about our issues-the gulf for example.
I believe that this annoyance interfered with his agenda to “transform our country”.
Well here’s a news flash for you Obama and all your little czars-WE love our country, and people can’t wait to see you disappear into the wall where you came from.

  2. Glenn Reynolds is an evil warmonger yadda yadda yadda.

  3. Okay, why do right wingers always look total fucking assholes? Reynolds looks like a Bible salesman who masterbates in gas station restrooms.

    1. How does any of that hurt you, Edward?

    2. On the other hand, he can probably spell “masturbates” correctly.

  4. “On the other hand.” I see what you did there.
