Over at PJTV, Glenn Reynolds talks with pollster Scott Rasmussen, who is also coauthor of a new book, Mad as Hell: How the Tea Party Movement is Fundamentally Remaking Our Two-Party System.

It's a good conversation that nails some of the reasons why the Dems are dimming (health care, imperious rule, deficit spending, etc.) and why the GOP can still blow their lead (because they are who they are).

I'm not sure why people are so quick to let Obama off the hook for his presidency. Rasmussen hints to it there, with his comment about Obama having to deal with established liberal Democrats when he took office.

The fact of the matter is that Obama got to the White House and, rather than dealing with the actual problems that existed (that he "inherited"), he set about the agenda he had long planned regardless of what the country needed from his presidency. His ideological blinders are what created the Tea Party Movement.

I was under the impression that the TPM was created to harness the momentum from a pretty good showing by Ron Paul (popularity and fundraising-wise), well before Obama even won the dem nomination.

what is the difference between figurehead and leader here? Just your anti-Paulism. You are right that he didn't create the movement, the movement found him. But that is because he is one of the few congressmen who walks the walk, instead of just talking the talk.
