Libertarian Party Founder Pins Stan Lee as a Right-Wing Conspirator
Delightful blast from the liberto-right wing past from a 1966 issue of Young Americans for Freedom New Guard magazine, in which future Libertarian Party founder (and current LP Senate candidate in Arizona) David Nolan sees a strong anti-commie streak in that era's Marvel super hero comics, dug up by the Comics Comics web site. An excerpt:
Bigger than the Birch Society, YAF and the Americans for Constitutional Action all rolled into one, there has recently emerged on the contemporary scene a new potentially right-wing organization of formidable power—the Merry Marvel Marching Society. This extremist group, cleverly disguised as an innocent venture in comic-book publishing, is busily undermining the minds of our nation's youth and indoctrinating them in a set of beliefs which can only be described as patriotic and wholesome…..
Marvel Comics are funny as well as epic. Their characters are human, as well as superhuman, and their dialogue is peppered with wisecracks. The characters refuse to be stuffed shirts—and when an unwary Marvel hero assumes a "holier than thou" attitude, his colleagues are not the slightest bit reluctant to take him down a peg.
But despite their lightheartedness, the heroes are indeed heroic, and the villains villainous. This in itself is not amazing—but the fact that the heroes run to being such capitalistic types as arms manufacturers (Tony Stark, whose alter ego is Iron Man), while the villains are often Communists (and plainly labeled as such, in less than complimentary terms) is a breath of fresh air in a world such as ours, where all too often "good guys" and "bad guys" are portrayed as being indistinguishable.
And it is in their frank recognition of the difference between good and evil that makes Marvel Comics, at least in my opinion, "right wing" in tone. The "Bullpen Gang," as the Marvel staffers refer to themselves in print, is not afraid to say that good and evil are mutually incompatible. Furthermore, they equate good with freedom and evil with totalitarianism, whether Communist, Nazi, or inhuman in origin. This is the "message" so assiduously repeated in all their sagas—and with such a message, no YAF member should have any quarrel.
Nolan could have done a more thorough job proving his point, but it is one no reader of circa 1961-67 Marvel Comics could disagree with too strongly, especially Lee's tendency to rely on communists, as well as less reliably ideological tyrants such as that subterranean Stalin the Mole Man, as villains (even pre-glasnost gorillas of the people's republics were going to be slugged into submission by the Fantastic Four and Giant Man), with the implication that it's always every red blooded American mutant and superhumans' responsibility to fight any fight, bear any burden, etc. to stymie their schemes.

Is it still clobberin' time?
Does the Yancy Street Gang represent Eminent Domain Abuse?
Here's Stan Lee marveling at himself for joining forces with drug-war propagandists:

Yeah, but Captain America and Blade were totally pro-drug er, serum, so it's OK.
I'm not sure how to break this to either of you. But it's a fucking comic book. What next? Will we be defending Gargamell for his genetic experiments to inject a spy in a cult of lil' blue midgets?
Stating the obvious and then trying to make a big fucking deal out of it is something a communist would do. I'm calling Cpt. America, that jingoistic motherfucker will take care of you evil bastards.
I know we can call Shakey a fucking fascist because he often used some form of morally corrupt evil dude as the antagonist in his tragedies.
You're absolutely right. We shouldn't be looking for political/philosophical subtext in things that aren't Real Art.
Comic books, popular music, the so-called televisuals, motion pictures, free-verse poetry, novels, and any scholarship written in vulgar vernaculars such as English. Consign them all to the rubbish-pile while I contemplate the meaning of Horace.
Oh, I think comics are art. I'm far from an art snob. I just think finding a racist under ever rock and a nazi in every corner a crock of shit.
there's an is in there somewhere.
don't you have to pay for whore ass?
hmm, you do realize that Gargamell was the protagonist in that cartoon, right? The smurfs, an all-male communistic society right down to Papa Joe Stalin Smurf's red outfit, often went out of their way just to fuck with him, so he retaliated in kind to protect himself. Also, he lived there long before the smurfs showed up. Did they have a right to declare imminent domain over his private property and dam his creek to suit their own needs without respect to the lawful owner of said property?
As far as I'm concerned, Gargamell was within his rights to create that bitch Smurfette, and Azreal could have eaten every one of the little blue fuckers without me shedding a single tear.
So, yeah, it would have been just smurfy if Gargamell would have smurfed every mother-smurfing one of those mother-smurfers up the smurf with a red-hot smurfer.
" mother-smurfers" was supposed to be cock-smurfers. Sorry. Forgot to preview first.

They were from some commie northern European country. Of course the smurfs were communists, along with that tin tin guy or whatever his name was.
I have it on good authority that Sergeant Rock was very anti-Nazi.
You know who else was anti-Nazi?
Hitler?
Nicely done.
You are a Nazi sympathizer!!!

Geez, how about a spoiler alert?
Didn't Ron Paul try to foment a race war?
No, you're thinking of Marvel's Civil War, and that was Tony Stark's fault, not Ron Paul's.
Sweet Aunt Petunia, Max, you're not even trying anymore. Even anon-bot has more contextual replies than you, which is why we all tolerate his presence and wish you would be eaten by the Hulk.
You have no respect for the Hulk's alimentary canal, sir.
Yes, commies were villains then and they are villains now and they will be villains for as long as they exist. This goes for real life as well as graphic novels. Also, the sky is blue.
DC Comics only has that socialist, The Joker. They better get with the program.
Wait, I thought the Joker was an anarcho-syndicalist...
Brian, if you like to keep a good tight hold on those memories of Marvel of yesteryear do not read the four issue series Wade Wilson's War where Deadpool recalls his adventures in Nicaragua saving innocent Sandinista children from being burned alive by Contras while he is correcting one of Ronnie Raygun's mistakes on a mission for the CIA.
It could actually work as a plot, even as I described it, but the dialog is excruciatingly painful even by comic book standards.
Two contras talking:
1st: Yo, what do you think will tip them off first? The smoke or the heat up in this jawn?
2nd: Like I care, Just so long as these college boys run outside.
1st: Definitely aim for the legs.
2nd: Hellz yeah! That way we can watch these communist pigs squirm and roast in the raging fires of capitalism!
Pity, the story is marred by the writer's Hollywood worthy (actually, I think the guy does write for Hollywood) understanding of geopolitics, because there is a very interesting story that goes along with it.
Deadpool is delusional in how he perceives himself and his fellow heroes. Domino is hot as all hell in his recollection, but bat shit ugly in contemporaneous scenes where she is held prisoner. Like wise, the whole Weapon X program is shown in a similar light, where they get the heroes up to buff for the missions but then they spend months at a time in tanks and wheelchairs recuperating for the next one. That plot line as it has been fleshed out is really good though it little too closely reminds me of one of the Haldeman's Forever War sequels.
Still, a few more issues to go. Like a lot of things in the media, you just have to put the stupid to the side in order to enjoy what remains.
On the other hand, Deadpool is totally insane anyway.
I hate the GULAG...
...and Tony
I am John Galt!!
CAPTAIN AMERICA . . . FUCK YEAH !!!
If Captian America was so great, why didn't he keep that sorry Marxist out of the White House
Well if it makes you feel better the Captain America that probably would have stood against Obama's administration was killed and a puppet Cap was put in his place.
Yeah, Stan Lee really went out on a limb there to make commies into bad guys during the Cold War.
Here's a 2006 blog post on the same subject (written by a commie, obviously): http://nobodylaughsatmisterfis.....-what.html
Also, I can't find the article now, but I did read comments from earlier this year in which Stan himself said he might have overdone the anti-communism in '60s Marvel books.
Anti-communism can't be overdone.
I couldn't agree more.
Superfriends, however, were all about statism.

If Nolan wants to bitch about Marvel, he should start with X-Men. Starting with Lee and Kirby and going on 40 years, the writers have been flogging the racism/discrimination horse to the white bones.
There's not a single evil capitalist on Earth-616 who says "hey, a chick who can control the weather? She'd be great for agriculture/construction/geological exploration." or, "That guy can rebuild a missing human heart and repair any ailment down to the genetic level? Let's get him to Johns Hopkins."
And Civil War...just...Civil War.
I became a Deadpool fan after reading an issue where he needs to challenge Wolverine to help himself recover from a bout of psychosis. Wolverine refuses the bait, and Kitty Pryde gives a smug little lecture, at which point Deadpool punches her about six feet in the air and in the process getting the fight he wanted.
By the way, Ellen Page looked perfect for that role in spite of the dumbest script in my memory. However, what is the deal with Hollywood trying to sell Anna Paquin as a sex symbol? They have rolled out a campaign to get that idea in our heads by getting her nude on the cover of the Rolling Stone, doing that Vampire crap, and coming out bisexual. Who the fuck are they kidding? Shouldn't they at least get a good looking woman before they hit us over the head with the blitz? Didn't they learn anything when they tried and failed at the same damn thing a decade ago with Gwyneth Paltrow? Nobody but a few rubes bought that notion.
Though, I wouldn't kick her out of bed (Anna, definitely would kick GP's ugly ass to the curve), sex symbol status is a bullshit stretch.

This is why you won't (or shouldn't) see a Deadpool movie, ever. Only the most epic human being to ever live could successfully project Deadpool's hilarious and deadly psychoses onto the big screen.
Tooooo late.
Nolan was still reading comics in his twenties? Maybe it helped him get into MIT.
Hmmn? Sounds like Nolan, now a Lefty Libertarian, may have started out as a Pro-Defenser. Too bad he eventually went to the dark side.
DONDEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I just think finding a racist under ever rock and a nazi in every corner a crock of shit.. gazeteler sohbet
