Sorry, But Our Zoning Regulations Forbid You From Celebrating Your Freedom
For 10 years, libertarian activist and scholar Peter Jaworski has thrown an annual summer seminar and party on the Clarington, Ontario property owned by his parents, Marta and Lech. The Liberty Summer Seminar typically features speeches from libertarian activists and scholars followed by live music and food. This year Peter's parents, who fled to Canada from communist Poland in the 1980s, face a $50,000 fine for violating local zoning laws.
Peter Jaworski said the local health department called him a few days before the event and he thought he had addressed its concerns over food being served — he decided to cater — and the three portable toilets on site.
But the couple received a summons to provincial court on Sept. 28 on a charge of using land in an agricultural zone "for a commercial conference centre" contrary to a Clarington bylaw.
Marta Jaworski, 57, said she and her husband, also 57, are "devastated" by the charge, which she called a "taste" of the oppression they felt in Poland before fleeing in 1984 to Germany and later Canada.
"It is a feeling to be hunted. They come in uniforms . . . ," she said, starting to cry.

Why don't we spread some liberty up there? It's not like it would be hard.
Send the Chicago PD up there to work some of the brutality out of their system. That's pretty much all it would take.
We enforce our own gotchas. Back off, eh?
Seriously. Knock. This. Shit. Off.
It's like a kid who just learned how to masturbate.
sweet christ, i didn't think the H&R squirrels allowed posting images. Coulda come in handy on draw-muhammed (praise be upon him)day. I'm gonna tear this place up!
This is pure awesome.
pshhh...I only *barely* ruined one post. And knowing the hammer was coming what was the harm?
For a magazine called Reason...
[insert picture of "Drink!" here]
lobster girl never ruined anything.
Tub girl was already ruined.
...which she called a "taste" of the oppression they felt in Poland before fleeing in 1984 to Germany and later Canada.
That kind of talk could hurt some feelings up there. Better get the HRC to have a look at Marta, eh?
We've had her under surveillance for some time.
What is it you say ... "Bugger off," eh?
See? The USA does NOT have a monopoly on stupid bureaucrats.
"It is a feeling to be hunted. They come in uniforms . . . ,"
Get used to it.
Damm, that was going to be my comment, except I would say
"get used to it bitch"
maybe I'm just a bit corser
Coarse. You're a bit more coarse. English. Use it.
While I hate to correct a technically correct Grammar Nazi, "coarser" is usually a better way to go than "more coarse". So, in effect, you are correcting a typographical error.
This is exactly the kind of grammatical gulag they fled from in the '80s.
+1
This is the type of nonsense up with which I will not put!
I had thought we were all the "Borderos Abiertos de Croudo". Maybe I am in the wrong place.
They should thank their lucky stars they aren't trying to run a lemonade stand.
Or, um, build, um...a mosque.
I'm so sorry.
If it weren't for cravin left-wing politicians and their friends in the state-controlled media, hey look over there!!! Greeks!
That's "cravEn", not "cravIn". And I ought to know.
Fap, fap, fap, fap, ...
New Mosques are easy. Rebuilding old Churches are hard.
Would inviting a Muslim speaker to the event cause cognitive dissonance amongst the regulators?
I guess he didn't get the hint when they called that they were looking for a handout.
This has the ring of truth. I once sat next to a Canadian who said there was no waiting in Canadian health care if you were prepared to make a small "donation."
They look like us, but they are different.
a charge of using land in an agricultural zone "for a commercial conference centre"
Now there's a law that every town needs, something to protect the unsuspecting in the community from unauthorized convocations on farmland.
No one expects the Commercial Conference Centre!
Too funny!
Every town that has a convention center, that is.
Celebrating freedom? Sorry, it might hurt someone's feelings anyways, and therefore must be forbidden.
Actually a number of the freedoms they were celebrating are in direct violation of the Quran and as such are "likely to expose" muslims and their beliefs "to hatred or contempt". Due to the use of the internet and fliers to promote this event and the related freedoms, the case has been forwarded "Canada's Human Rights Commissions"
Oh how I wish I could confidently assume that was sarcasm.
Me Too.
And the last thing we want to do is violate the Quran. Or Bible. Or Torah. Or a Dr. Seuss book for that matter.
Dr. Seuss isn't old enough. Give those books a century or two.
Yeah, but I want to beat the crowds.
Like matth said, give it a couple hundred years. Then you can beat all the crowds you want provided they disrespect your Holy Book, Green Eggs and Ham.
(or maybe its the Lorax, if youre a Ecoseussian.)
I feel I'm learning that governments almost never take away freedoms, in the sense that they actually, explicitly, say that "you don't have the right to..." Instead, they just make the freedoms so incredibly hard to exercise that they practically disappear. You certainly have a right to ____, as long as you get approved land for it, fill out the proper paperwork (and by the way, hope processing doesn't take too long!), pay the right fees, do it at the right time, etc. But oh, you have the right, of course.
Death by a thousand cuts.
Or, as Evan McKenzie put it:
(00:22:48) It's like something you would see in Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia. People think these things don't go on. But we know they go on every day... These people who have no idea how to use power at all. They won't even accept limits on their power. They don't even know what the law requires of them, these directors. They go by what some lawyer tells them to do, which the lawyer tells them to do only because he or she knows they can get away with it. Because the only recourse you have is some civil suit. Here in Illinois, we don't have an Ombudsman. Most states don't. There's nowhere for [property] owners to turn. If the lawyer tells them "Oh, just jack 'em around. Who cares what the rules are? Who cares what the law says? It' doesn't make any difference. The transaction costs of enforcing an [property] owners rights are so great that they are hardly ever able to do it. (00:23:40)
"annual summer seminar" or corporate-funded indoctrination clinic?
Libertarians are such corporate tools that it's legitimate to consider holding seminars there using it as a "commercial conference center".
I wouldn't want the Heritage foundation to set up a mega-church next door to my land holding outdoor prayer ceremonies on the back lawn!
Organic Girl didn't used to be this angry!
I liked her better when she was just spreading the eco-love. This kind of bitter corporate-tool-hate thing is so. . . Chad.
I've been reading Chad, he seems like a very smart guy.
Certainly smarter than some of you, who may never have watched a documentary in your lives. Havn't any of you seen Food, Inc. Or The Shock Doctrine or Manufacturing Consent?
We're more into documentaries like Anal Milk Squirters II.
But is it raw and organic milk?
Madam, you have mastered the art of trolling. Well done *clapclap*
Even better, I suspect it's a well played spoof troll. Very well done.
As was said earlier, we can't be confident that she is spoofing a troll. She might mean it.
It is so strange that H&R indeed celebrates trolling as a form of art.
It is so strange that H&R indeed celebrates trolling as a form of art.
If ya cant beat em, join em.
I liked One Night in Paris. Or basically any other travel doc.
Those aren't real documentaries. Real documentaries speak truth to power and challange the status quo!
Oooo....like "Indoctrinate U?"
Hey, OG, you might like this guy's work:
http://www.davidicke.com/
He really challenges the status quo.
Real documentaries have some relation to reality unlike, say, Naomi Klein's documentaries.
Okay, OG, you blew it with the "truth to power" bullshit line.
Just 'fess up that you only consider left-wing documentaries to be worthy of perusal, and be done with it.
OK, that was over the top. The "Documentaries" post was tipping on the edge, but I think we can declare Organic Girl a troll spoof.
They can never resist going that one step too far.
My favorite part of Food Inc. is where the organic milk guys realize they can get their message and eco-friendly product out to millions more customers through a deal with Wal-Mart.
My second favorite part is the raging against the U.S.'s huge agricultural subsidies that make corporate farms rich while causing unintended consequences including the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Some very libertarian ideas in that movie.
I know The Shock Doctrine has been discussed here... try some of the articles on it. 😀
Organic Girl didn't used to be this angry!
Jute tampons are a bitch.
That's fucking funny.
I think they feel great.
Oh wait, I'm dead.
I bet she uses Cherokee hair tampons.
I doubt they'd be able to stand the stench, so you'd be safe.
They were going to be surrounded by organic things, OG. What's the hubbub?
Too much negative energy!
Havn't you every spent any time around brainwashed people? It's like all the energy just gets suchs into a deal soulless corporate void.
I don't want their vapid brainwaves disrupting our pagen rites. Or them peeking over the fence and complaining about the nudity!!!
Havn't you every spent any time around brainwashed people? It's like all the energy just gets suchs into a deal soulless corporate void.
Oh why oh yes. It's called subsidies.
Or them peeking over the fence and complaining about the nudity!!!
No problem. When they arrive, wear burkas at all times. When they complain you are a terrorist, get in the nude again.
"the Heritage foundation to set up a mega-church next door to my land"
I'm pretty sure Heritage hasn't considered setting up any churches, so you should be good there!
P.S. Christianity is not a political program, even if it does lead naturally to some of what our current culture happens to consider political positions.
I keyword searched those ordinances, and I found exactly zero references to "conference".
The references to "centres" were all fitness centres.
Something ain't right here.
Something ain't right here.
no this is perfectly normal. Land use bureaucrats nearly always make up regulations as they go along. Legislative enactment of regulations is generally a sideshow where Bureaucrats tell legislators they are passing one thing then have them sign into law another thing.
I know this seems far fetched but i have seen it happen multiple times.
The ordinances state exceptions there are to the agricultural use. The fact that "commercial conference centre" isn't found in the document just means it isn't one of the exceptions.
"It is a feeling to be hunted. They come in uniforms . . . ," she said, starting to cry.
WOW. When did our federal government annex this part od Canada? I would have expected it to have been in the papers.
Related:
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.
Not bad for a frog.
Did you guys know that Jack London was a racist communist dirtbag? They never tell you that in school when you read Call of the Wild.
http://volokh.com/2010/08/17/jack-london-racist-progressive/
Yes. Dashiell Hammett, (Raymond Chandler novels) too.
You leave Chandler out of this.
Most people wouldn't know who Hammett was if I didn't mention the novels. They'd think it was the guy from Metallica.
Also Hammett was a pinko, but I can't say if he was racist.
I have his works... beyond the two famous ones, they were rather boring.
Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler are not the same person. Hammett influenced Chandler's writing.
You know who else was a racist socialist?
Hmmmmmm, now that you mention it,....
Councillor Gord Robinson, who represents the Jaworskis, declined comment by email, saying: "The Jaworski family have not been in contact with me about any issue and until they do I will not interfere."
Glad to hear the United States doesn't corner the market on limp-dicked politicians.
Why is it that these crapholes feel free to act on their own initiative when it comes to putting their boot on someone's neck, but when it comes to reigning in some thimble-witted thick-necked pocket Stasi, they disappear.
"thimble-witted thick-necked pocket Stasi"
We can always count on you, RC
Well, if he isn't being dishonest, how did he "disappear"? I doubt local politicians are aware of every time local bureaucrats crush people's dreams (would be a full time job anyway), and they're probably going to be more concerned with acting if they get first party or a lot of third party complaints, not just a reporter asking questions.
I think 'councillor' in this instance means he's their abogado, in which case not commenting until they ask him to is entirely appropriate.
Aaaaaannnnd if I'd read the very next comment in the thread, I'd have seen that somebody else already addressed it.
Actually this appear to be a typo. Councillor in Canada, is a local politician kinda person. What I believe the writer was aiming for was Counsel which can be used as a word for lawyer. The writer is simply not up on legal/lawyerly terms.
i.e. There is also the word "counsel" (not "counsellor") that Canadian judges like to use to refer to a lawyer who is representing someone in court. " - this is from http://www.wisegeek.com/what-i.....squire.htm
Which has nothing at all to do with the fact that, actually, the U.S. does not have the market cornered on limp-dicked politician. It is simply that the U.S. is where Canadian assholes go to find out how and what to mimic.
Ok you are are now going to have to show everyone how the fuck you did that.
Oh shit, the end is nigh...
Hehehehe...I like it.
Well if you aren't going to tell us at least put up lobster girl!!
A-fucking-men.

We can post images now? When the fuck did that happen?
Hopefully our blogmasters will crush this soon. But it should be fun while it lasts...
That's what I figure. I'd be okay with the images if they were limited to, well, me.
The greatest act of evil ever on this blog.
I'm not proud.
Shit. Preview is important.
He's not, however, funny on other days of the week either.

Wasn't Tim Cavanah thier web master for a while?
He might come to our houses and do mean things to us
look at this!!
He is like some sort of death ninja...with that chin alone he could level whole cities!!
He can use a fashion coach. Let's start with a tie knotting teacher.
What is the over/under on time it takes for someone to post a picture of a dick?
WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY
USE IT WISELY
HERE? NEVER! IN OTHER THREADS? DOUBTFUL.
WOOT!!!
The power to summon lobster girl without begging the staff is enough to make be change my mind:
Unfortunately our blogmasters will crush this soon...
AH, THE WEIBSKOBOLD. EXCELLENT. YET WHY IS SHE FROZEN?
She is moving on my screen...
Perhaps moving is not the right verb...
Quaking?
She's undulatin'
and i'm percolatin'
Egad. I better switch threads. I've been telling my wife (truthfully) that I come here for the articles. Who knew that it was going in this new direction?
Who knew that it was going in this new direction?
Seriously?
That animated gif was more inevitable then gravity.
GRAVITY? IN THE URKOBOLD'S PROFESSIONAL OPINION, HE'D SAY SHE NEVER STUDIED THE LAW OF GRAVITY.
I can't look away....
I'm moving a little bit too...
Is that the libertarian anti-war chick?
Doherty's wife?
Resonating
Winner.
Sweet mother of God.
I'm liking this new feature more and more.
I know what this is about.
She: "Is that you I've got ahold of or your horse?"
He: "You're in for a Musical Ride, babe."
"It is a feeling to be hunted. They come in uniforms . . . ," she said, starting to cry.
Well put.
"They Come In Uniforms" sounds like a good WWII movie.
Or a good Stagliano movie.
Damn, didn't mean to reply to the blasphemous image..
Don't make me come over there....
When all of this is made impossible here, I hope these threads will be allowed to stand as a testament to the creativity and insanity of Hit & Run commenters.
We are libertarians..
Can't we self regulate?
I propose the following rules of thumb:
try to use images that have already been used by reason. The advantage of this is two fold. It conserves resources both for reason.com and for people's load times and it insures that the image is acceptable to reason readers.
Use small images when posting images from offsite.
Try to keep the animated gifs to a minimum.
Stay away from nipples, dicks or vaginas.
Anyway just an idea...it would be cool to keep this. If we play nice we might be able to.
Other rule of thumb:
If in doubt link to the image rather then post it.
I'd be all for something like that, but I doubt seriously they'll let us keep our toys. I suppose a possibility would be to tell everyone how to do some reasonable coding (like small pictures), but you know someone would abuse the hell out of it.
This feature actually has a little utility. The Comments of this thread are way easy to navigate.
"Where was that comment i posted?"
"Oh yeah it was between Lobster girl and Mohamed bomb"
Awsome!!
Another rule of thumb:
Do not post threaded photo replies that are not related to the subject. If you got new photo that is not a response post it as a new unthreaded comment at the bottom. Examples: the placement of the Super trooper photo is bad while the Mohammad photo is good. Uncle Ben photo is also good cuz although threaded it relates to the subject of the thread.
I think we need a posting under which a new compact of HTML can be negotiated and established.
.. how to attach a pic, so go here: http://scrapetv.com/News/News Pages/Entertainment/pages-3/Roger-Ebert-to-replace-thumb-with-emoticons-in-print-reviews-Scrape-TV-The-World-on-your-side.html
p.s. thanks to JC and Urk for their contributions!!
...etc
Ignore Organic Girl. I suspect she is tofu sushi mk2, and we know how tedious that got.
I miss tofu sushi.
Die in a fire.
I just visit Reason for the articles, dear
But thanks science I got to see Lobster Girl finally! Not what I expected...in a good way...
Did you not know about A WIki Called Reason?
I think "A wiki called Reason" may need some updating:
http://reason.wikia.com/wiki/David_Weigel
David Weigel is an associate editor of Reason Magazine and a frequent poster on the Hit & Run blog.[1]
For reasons that aren't clear, at one time, Weigel's Hit & Run posts were readily commented on as "shilling" for the Democrats. As these accusations were losing traction, they were replaced with humorous accusations of "shilling" for something ridiculous in the posting.
I just want to thank the server squirrels for clamping down unilaterally on the image posting.
The level of discourse in here is already toxicly stupid. We don't need to turn H&R into a libertarian 4chan.
BAH!!
The images created identifiable breaks that made tread navigation much easier.
When threads get over the 150 posts mark I usually just avoid them.
Oh, please. It's a little summer vacation from the Mosque-a-thon.
[Insert a nude photo of Ayn Rand flipping you off]
I went to our local rag to get a link for a story that is actually relevant to this discussion and when I get back, I see that I missed out on pr0n? I am cursed.
Anyhow, I just wanted to point out that our neighbors in the Great White North have had their shit drip down here in Sunny Minnesota. A local couple runs afoul of various city ordinances for hosting "house concerts."
A local couple would host live bands and would send out fliers to their neighbors to let them know what was going on. He charged a small cover that went directly to the band and gave away free home brewed beer. Of course one new neighbor objected and the city shut him down. After an uproar they graciously allowed him to start back up again if he promised to stop putting out fliers.
The truly sad thing is that a disturbingly large number of commenters on the story defend the city and can't believe people are mad at them because they "allowed" the couple to resume their concerts.
It is kind of funny that they clamped down in a thread about supression of freedom, lol.
Finally, a land rights post gets a respectable amount of traffic. 😀
They named it the wrong thing.
If they had called it:
The anti-Zionist Liberty Summer Seminar
the Canadian government would have helped to fund it.
No doubt the UN and Harvard University would have chipped in too. Of course while the Saudis would have SAID they would help finance it; they will never actually send any money.
Damn, this was a great thread. The only other place I have seen humor close to this good is of of Spades. (Not a plug, just an observation)
Thanks, all.
As for the topic, I'd feel bad for the canadians if we were not going in the same direction here...
One thing Canada is NOT is a free country - and the least free province in Canada is Ontario.
Every jurisdiction has its own bag-man, the person in charge of accepting payoffs. Reach (i.e., pay) him/her, and you're home "free."
Note: The payoff-charge is usually $1 per attendee, $2 when fireworks are involved (no charge for sparklers).
Certainly wouldn't want any hate speech, now would we!
Oh, Canada!
When private corporations do this, libertarians celebrate.
Whoever thought that Canada was free? Shows you what happens without a 1st amendment.
Canada has always been a dictatorship, look into it's history. Really.
Were your parents on drugs, when they ran to Canada? I like have NO sympathy.
They still seem in complete DENIAL about the country they chose to live in.
