In Bell, CA, Overpaid City Officials Become Overpaid Retirees
The outraged citizens of Bell, California, scored a partial victory today with the resignations of three grossly overpaid city officials. The city manager, assistant manager, and police chief had drawn furious criticism for receiving some of the highest salaries in the nation for local government officials. How high is that, you ask?
In addition to the $787,637 salary of Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo, Bell pays Police Chief Randy Adams $457,000 a year, about 50% more than Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck or Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and more than double New York City's police commissioner. Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia makes $376,288 annually, more than most city managers.
Too bad they still get their pensions:
Rizzo would be entitled to a state pension of more than $650,000 per year for life, the Times said. That would make him the highest-paid retiree in the state pension system.
At age 62, when Rizzo could also begin receiving Social Security payments, his annual pension would rise to $976,771, topping $1 million two years later.
If he lives to age 83, his annual payout would rise to $1.48 million.
Adams could get more than $411,000 per year, and Spaccia, who is 51-year-old, could get as much as $250,000 a year when she reaches 55.
Meanwhile, Bell Mayor Oscar Hernandez sided with the officials and attacked the Los Angeles Times for provoking the controversy "to advance the paper's own agenda." The crowds of angry residents weren't putting up with any such nonsense, though, and quickly began calling for further resignations:
The crowd erupted in applause after the announcement but immediately yelled out questions about what would happen to council members. Four of the five council members are paid close to $100,000 annually. When their questions were not answered, they shouted: "Recall!"
Whether the Bell episode will have a truly happy ending remains to be seen. Reason Editor in Chief Matt Welch interprets the scandal here. And if you're looking for another reason to hate Rizzo, read all about his drunk-driving arrest here. Trust me, it's worth checking out this, ahem, fat cat.

That's a lovely cat.
Oh, the article is about tax-fed leeches...
Maybe this would have been more appropiate, no matter what State worshippers would say:

Yeah, he isn't going to live to 83.
Is anybody else thinking that maybe working for a living was oversold? I can't help but feel like I'm playing for the wrong team hearing about Rizzo's compensation.
The pretty kitty calms my urges to kill. Who's a pretty tabby? Yes, you are. Who has an M on her forehead? Yes, you do.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who baby talks to cats.
It's science!
+1 for non sequitur death metal.
The kitty is cute. And I bet she has never stolen one dime from the people of the State of California.
Maybe the residents ob Bell, CA do not realize that, without their government, they would not have a civilized community.
Oops, I channelled Tony, again!
while you are at it channel MNG.
Since Andrew Breitbart didn't show all of the video, those officials have every right to make 800K a year.
Ha ha!
Trolling by proxy again
If, as Oliver Wendell Holmes said, taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society, Bell must be one of the most civilized places in the country.
no sickness, no hate, full employment, all the women are hot, and all the men have ginormous dicks. O, if only we would pay our governmental officials as much everywhere!!!
"Whether the Bell episode will have a truly happy ending remains to be seen."
You don't always get the happy ending no matter how badly you want it.
CNSNews.com) ? The Obama administration is backing legislation that includes regulations requiring U.S. businesses to provide to the government data about employee pay as it relates to the sex, race and national origin of employees.
In an orchestrated effort that included a statement by President Barack Obama and an event at the White House featuring Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, the president and his cabinet endorsed the Paycheck Fairness Act.

My god, these stupid fucks just won't stop until they own absolutely everything.
regulations requiring U.S. businesses to provide to the government data about employee pay as it relates to the sex, race and national origin of employees.
I thought this information was confidential. And voluntary, if you disclosed it.
As a proud cat fancier, I strongly object to comparing the noble felis catus to that most despicable of species: the common politician!
Resignation is a wonderful present for these guys! $650k pension with increases for life is way, way better than $787k for going to work. If he really can earn more in the private sector he just gets to add $650k to his paycheck. Otherwise he can worry and fret about how to make a go of it on only $650k. That's why I'll never be wealthy. I would have retired once my pension reached $500k per year. Add in savings and you could travel the world like a king on that kind of scratch.
That's ma cat ChubbChubb.
Looks just like him.
The Chub Chubs are coming! RUN!!!!
ChubbChubbs
You need a warning on the link to that pic.
The biggest story here is not the paychecks but the sheeple who paid no attention. This situation did not occur overnight. It did not occur under the table.
I have no sympathy for the residents of Bell.
Exactly. How did they get much that money? That's what the people need to be asking.
Hmm, I've never seen the word "overpayed" before. Is it similar to overpaid?
I was wondering the same thing, but I suck at spelling and grammar. So I avoid commenting on it.
Ninja edit!
Overpayed is a verb: Bell grossly overpayed their city manager.
Overpaid is an adjective: Bell's city manager was grossly overpaid.
Rick beat me to it.
Yikes.
For the love of Zeus, the word is "overpaid."
How do you like me now? See you in 2012
That there's some shrike bait.
So not only does he act like a stereotypical out of control mobster, he looks like one too?
That or a human version of Jabba the Hut.
And could that TV station found a picture that looked more like a mug shot? Sometimes media sleaze and unfairness is pretty funny.
So how much are they going to pay the replacements for these people? Unless they drastically change things or find a way to lessen the pension payouts, this could cost them more than simply paying the exorbitant salary.
If the city manager got $787k per year but only drops to $650k as a retiree, that means the city would need his replacement to make $137k just to break even.
The city doesn't pick up the pension tab. The state does (I think).
Besides, he's not old enough to start collecting the pension.
Articles are getting better.
Whatever we pay out public officials, it's not enough.
Yeah, anyway, didn't Rizzo claim that he could make more than $800k per year anywhere else and this job represented a huge sacrifice for him?
Is there any legal reason that pensions cannot be taxed at a higher (and much more progressive) rate? It seems to me that different forms of income are taxed differently all the time. Why would this be any different.
This is a serious question by the way.
As a side note, is it possible I have found a potential tax that even libertarians would support?
Sure. It's the IRS they can and will make up whatever arbitrary exception or special group they want.
Why would libertarians support increasing taxes on pensions, no matter how retarded the agreement is that both parties entered into? It's still taxing income.
Income, from whatever source, should not be taxed. Consumption should be the source of Government income. Taxes levied on consumption would allow a single (or very few) different rates. It makes sense because even if criminal monies were laundered, they would still be taxed when spent. It brings the entire market under the tax structure.
That being said, the discussion then becomes a fair rate. I would argue that the rate should cover the VERY limited, legitimate functions of Government. I think this arrangement would "stimulate" the economy by allowing people to keep more of their own money while taxing transactions that are now outside the system, lowering each person total contribution to the support of Government. I am not a "no Government" libertarian as I believe that Government has a role to play (enforcing contracts, protecting the rights of citizens, not violating them, providing for the common defense, etc.), but nothing like what is happening today.
I'm a libertarian, and I would support a 100% tax on the pensions of government employees, at least in this case.
Bell California is the prodcut of the immigration policies you support.
Ooooh. He should be liposuctioned and the fat sold to the pet food industry to compensate Bell, CA citizens.
Oh Shit!!!
I got busted making $800,000 per year. I better retire at $450,000 per year b4 anyone notices.
"I'm in ur City Hall, pikkin ur pokkit."
As I've mentioned before, it would only be necessary to tar and feather a dozen or so politicians a year to keep the rest of them from trying to pull this shit.

This is worse than just the city council taking bribes to pay off the city managers with humongous annual raises. Bell is a very poor community, and the money is coming from federal handouts (courtesy of taxpayers nationwide). The city managers were being rewarded for bringing home the federal bacon.
Now that they've been canned, the taxpayers of California are on the hook for paying the largest pension in the state to an ex-manager of a town of 40,000 people. Pensions are legally binding, you see....
agree, you have a really good view on this topic. I think you might also interested in some coach handbags online
