If Elected, I'll Prefer Not to Raise Taxes
Last month I noted that President Obama seemed to be setting up his National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform as an excuse to break his promise not to raise taxes on households earning less than $250,000 a year. (The powerless, purely advisory commission made me do it!) A few days later, Peter Suderman pointed out that Obama's budget director, Peter Orszag, declined to reiterate Obama's promise, saying the president wants the commission to consider all possible solutions to the nation's dire long-term fiscal situation. Yesterday, Lloyd Grove reports at The Daily Beast, Orszag went a little further, describing Obama's "firm pledge" as a mere "preference."
Obama, of course, already has broken his tax pledge. Repeatedly. But he insisted those taxes weren't really taxes. Now he seems ready to argue that his pledge was not really a pledge.

Read my lips: Obama is a one-termer.
Absolutely. BTW:
WSJ-NBC: Voters Most Interested in Midterms Prefer GOP to Democrats, 56%?36%

Yeah no.
Read my lips: Obama is a one-termer
Disagree. He's looking a lot like Clinton in 93/94. He will take a beating in the midterms, then the economy will come back to life (perhaps temporarily), he will get the credit, and beat the crap out of whichever Republican stuffed suit challenges him.
Barring something really unforeseen happening, the 2012 presidential election will be like one of those 1980s WWF bouts between, say, the Macho Man Randy Savage and some guy named Bob Smithm or something: it's pretty clear who is going to win, and everyone's just going through the motions.
Actually, there was an 80s wrestler who lost every week to the big stars named Barry O. Conincidence?
That's certainly possible, maybe even likely. At the same time, people were talking about how there weren't any good Democratic candidates around this time in Bush the Elder's term. Politicians sometimes emerge from nowhere, even if Republicans do like to anoint the next in line.
So long as the Republicans take the House or the Sentate, Obama could be tolerable through 2016. I fully expect him to take a bunch of Republican talking points and make them his own.
Yup. I think Obama is fundamentally non-ideological (or at least, with him, ideology takes a back seat to self-promotion).
If he gets slammed in the mid-terms, he will very ostentatiously move to the center, take the Republicans' best arguments, and make them look like angry wingnuts.
Straight out of the Clinton playbook.
Obama is a self-serving twat whose primary focus is on expanding the unitary executive power.
You guys are kidding yourselves. Obama is no Clinton. You have to remember Bill Clinton has been a governor. He knew how to deal with a hostile legislature. Obama has never been anything. He has also, unlike Clinton, never suffered a serious defeat. Losing in November will make him more intransigent and more insufferable you watch.
Presidents don't usually deal well with getting their asses kicked at the ballot box. Clinton was the exception. Don't forget Carter lost big in the 1978 elections, although he didn't lose Congress. And Carter got worse rather than better in his last two years in office. Obama is a lot more like Carter than Clinton.
As bad as a leader as Carter was, he had a well defined set of ethics. No body wanted what he had to sell and he wouldn't change. That was a big factor in his failure in 1980.
And I agree Obama has neither the skill nor the experience that Clinton had.
What Obama has a total lack of moral direction. So what ever happens in November 2010, he will go with the flow. That may not be enough to save him in the 2012 election, but I don't think the Republicans are going to run the next Reagan either.
Personally, I hope the fucker goes down in flames.
But he doesn't have what Clinton had, personal charm. He is more of a cold scold like Carter. Clinton knew how to make people feel like he cared. Obama can't do that. When a politician is in trouble, he has to have a well of good will and charm to fall back on. Obama doesn't have that. Maybe he will find it, but I doubt it.
But he has the willful blindess of half the likely voters behind him.
The problem he has is that he ran as a blank slate and thus became too many things to too many people. The Left thought he was going to give them all a pony. But the independents thought he was going to be a post partisan centrists. He can't be both. So he has wound up being neither. He is going to have a hard time winning back independents.
John:
I hope you're right, but I think you're wrong. True, Obama doesn't have charm, but he has bucketloads of charisma (which Carter didn't have, hell Carter lacks even basic dignity). Also, despite losing a lot of centrist support, he still has die-hard media and BOBO (to use a Brooksism) constituencies.
I think you'll find Obama showing a lot of flexibility to stay in power.
Also, Carter's defeat in 1980 was at least in part due to a Republican candidate with a great deal of charisma and charm. Where is today's Reagan? Even if there was one in the wings, given the well-known predilection of the Republican Party to choose next in line, would he (she?) even have a chance of nomination?
Reagan was a good politician and a great speaker. But, I think too much is made of him as a person. And I don't mean that to disrespect Reagan. But, a lot of Republicans could have won in 1980. Carter was horrible. If anything, Reagan made it harder than it should have been by being so radical for the times. In short, it won't take another Reagan to beat Obama. That is both good and bad. Because 2012 could end up being for the Republicans like 2008 was for the Democrats; a year that is so favorable for them that someone completely over their head in the job could win.
, a lot of Republicans could have won in 1980. Carter was horrible.
Agreed, but that strengthens my point: Carter was a fundamentally weak candidate, who managed to become president by unseating an extremely-weak incumbent tainted by association with Watergate (the only Pres never to be elected Pres or VP).
If anything, Reagan made it harder than it should have been by being so radical for the times.
Perhaps his program was extreme, but it was welcome to many, and his persona surely managed to sway a lot of people on the fence.
I sure hope it isn't Palin.
I hope it is. I'd love to see all you misogynist commie traitor faggots spontaneously combusting over the news.
Bill Clinton was a Democratic candidate with a great deal of charisma and charm. Where was the Democrats' Clinton in 1990? Running for re-election in the small, inconsequential state of Arkansas.
You're quite right about the Republican predilection to choose the next in line, though.
But, thank God, there isn't really a next in line for the Republicans. There isn't a Bob Dole or a John McCain to give it to because everyone likes him and he has tried so many times. The closest to that is Mitt Romney, but there is no way that Romney has any future given his connection to Masscare and by extension Obamacare.

Yeah. I think if the Repubs wanted to win in 2012, they need to think out of the box, maybe choose someone like Meg Whitman. Of course, the SoCons probably won't let that happen.
I wouldn't exactly call Meg Whitman a small government type. Their best bet will be a governor of a state who has actually managed to keep his state solvent. Someone with few if any ties to Washington or the GOP establishment.
Anyone come to mind?
Mitch Daniels of Indiana has done a good job on economics, and he will likely run. He won with a very solid increased majority in 2008. He does have Washington connections, having run the OMB for a while.
Gary Johnson (former governor of New Mexico)
Anyone come to mind?
Honestly, I am not enough of a political nerd to tell you who any of the governors are beyond the guy in New Jersey and The Governator out in California.
And I am not enough of a political nerd to know why Whitman is not a small-govt type (actually, pls inform me), I threw her name out as a hypothetical example of the type of out-of-the-box selection that could be effective: successful businessperson, woman, in tune with the BOBO parts of society, latecomer to politics etc.
Do you see any winners in this group? Lot's of people with nothing to do after 2010.

Daniels, Jindal, Pawlenty, and Christie will get noise. McDonnell may get some noise because all Virginia governors do, but he'll likely go for a Senate seat, like all Virginia governors. Rick Perry's happy enough down in Texas. Mark Sanford obviously not any more, though he did a fine job in South Carolina, pushing against the Republican Party's worst instincts there. Schwarzenegger is ineligible in any case. Haley Barbour has national connections, but wouldn't run.
Several will be ex-politicians for a while unless they find something else to run for. Hoeven's going to take a Senate seat this year, BTW.
But he doesn't have what Clinton had, personal charm.
Apparently we have different first black presidents. The one I suffer under displays lots of charm as he lies like a sumbitch.
You misread Obama. Yes, his ideology is likely a bit fluid and he is likely more consumed with maintaining power than he is sworn to a specific ethos. But the one thing he has that's knockin him is that he truly believes his own hype. As evidenced with HCR, he will fritter away all of his political capital over the course of a year plus arguing his way under the belief that he is somehow genuinely persuasive (the media fawning over his intellect and temperment have enabled his brazenness in this regard). Obama doesn't have the real fluidity in his underlying ideology because Obama is too enamoured with himself to concede defeat.
Exactly, John. Can you imagine what Clinton would have done in 93/94 with a majority in the House and a 60-vote majority in the Senate?
I knew Bill Clinton, I worked for Bill Clinton, I shared women with Bill Clinton. And Obama is no Clinton.
That explains WAY too much about you.
NO fucking way.
NO fucking way will this economy "come back to life" in any fucking way.
Clinton surrounded himself with free-marketeers who understood monetary policy.
Obama has surrounded himself with free-wheeling printing-press operators who love trimming their own cunts.
No fucking way.
NO FUCKING WAY.
One term, gone, and we'll never (unfortunately) elect another black president for the next 100 years.

Can we get a Mexican and an Asian before i die? Cuz that would be cool.
Kagan/Sotomeyer in 2012
I'm free, if y'all want me.
How about Salma Hayek and Grace Park?
I'd like to get with a Mexican and an Asian before I die too. Preferably at the same time.
I guess we can't elect another white president for the next 100 years either since the white guy before Obama screwed it up.
Which race gets a shot at it next?
Disagree. He's looking a lot like Clinton in 93/94. He will take a beating in the midterms, then the economy will come back to life (perhaps temporarily), he will get the credit, and beat the crap out of whichever Republican stuffed suit challenges him.
Obama will not say these words ever:
"The era of big government is over."
Obama does not have the flexibility or the political instincts that Clinton had. He will be torn a new asshole in 2012.
Furthermore we are not getting a rebound in the economy anywhere approaching what the economy of 1995 and 1996 looked like.
I think it largely depends on who the GOP nominates in 2012.
Have we come back around to the meaning of "is," then?
"Peter Orszag, declined to reiterate Obama's promise, saying the president wants the commission to consider all possible solutions to the nation's dire long-term fiscal situation."
Except, of course, repealing any of the massive new government spending programs Obama has enacted - like Obamacare.
"Peter Orszag, declined to reiterate Obama's promise, saying the president wants the commission to consider all possible solutions to the nation's dire long-term fiscal situation."
Just have Obama resign. That should do it.
Well, except that President Biden may be just as bad or worse. And President Pelosi? We might see fifty states secede if that happens.
Move along. Nothing to see here.
Is that what I was saying?
Yes, it is. You seem to be saying that due to the shitty replacement options, we should give The One a free pass.
I thought what you were saying is that Kirk is clearly better than Picard because he never, ever drinks "synthahol". Or Earl Grey tea.
Yes, I think that is closer to my true meaning. Also, Kirk never failed to mount an alien female. I think Picard blew any number of chances.
I must say that Picard lost a little of my respect when he turned down the metamorph. Dude, c'mon!
Now if Dr. X and Jean Gray got together I suppose that makes up for it. Any X-Men experts care to comment?
I don't know, but...how you doin?
heh. even a straight sci-fi nerd girl like myself can tell that Famke Janssen is way more attractive than Gates McFadden.
Famke is quite fine. I'd really like her to leave the glasses on though.
Xenia Onatopp?
Whoa. Never mind. Either way is goooooooood.
Famke Janssen was born November 5, 1965, in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Wow i would have never guessed she was a cougar.
Also, re: Crusher & Troi- Kirk would've shagged 'em both rotten, and to hell with the consequences.
I might be behind that, if the result was a fairly large number of states seceding. The Feds need to have most of their power taken away.
Fifty states seceding beats a Constitutional convention in my mind.
You're not stuck in California (Greece).
Hey, if that happens and a breakaway republic composed of OR, WA, ID, AK and British Columbia were formed, you guys are totally invited to live here. Just tell them sage sent you.
Episiarch, however, will be deported.
Pizza censorship, huh?
It ain't pizza the way he makes it.
That's for damned sure. Now I'm not saying I favor internment camps for thin pizza heretics, but I'm not saying that I'm against them, either.
I've been working on getting my gf to warm up to the idea of Oregon for awhile now. She doesn't like cold weather. A Southern California native through and through. But she's also getting her teaching credential and I try to remind her everyday that the state we presently reside in, five years hence, is unlikely to be able to issue a check for her services that will not bounce.
Isn't Oregon the next California? Or is that Washington?
It wouldn't surprise me if it happened to us (WA). Fortunately I've been stocking up on canned goods and ammo for quite some time.
Prepare a retreat on the eastern side of the Cascades as well.
Prepare a retreat on the eastern side of the Cascades as well.
Umm how do westerners expect to do that? Not only do we control the Dams we are the only ones with Guns.
The advantage to Oregon is the ability to afford acreage to actually grow crops on.
Hey, if that happens and a breakaway republic composed of OR, WA, ID, AK and British Columbia were formed
We would not be the new Greece. We would be the new year zero in Cambodia.
You have to be realistic about the political culture of the Pacific Northwest and it is actually far worse then Obama.
If it involves the government taking money out of my (or anyone's) pocket by force, it's a tax.
Fines for parking tickets?
Garnishing of wages pursuant to a civil court decision?
thats the problem with politicians. They always tell you what you want to hear to get your votes yet once elected, develop sudden memory loss yet the SHeeple vontinue to fall for it.

Even anon-bot gets it.
As I will continue to point out, the anon-bot far surpasses Max in the relevance, humor, civility and general quality of its comments.
I always imagine Anon-Bot started by spamming hundreds of blogs, possibly glancing at content just enough to decide between his "political" and "celeb scandal" comment templates.
One day, between spamming on HawtMoms and Hoop News, another comment on Hit & Run caught his eye.
It made him think.
Now every day he falls farther and farther behind in his spamming quota as he spends hours articulating the perfect comment for us.
Welcome, Anon. Embrace us. Enrich us.
leave my memory loss out of this...
I eagerly await the day the Presidential Suit addresses the nation, in prime time, to tell us what a colossal fuckup the health care bill is, apologize, and call the Congress into special session to repeal it.
I also eagerly await the arrival of Michelle Pfeiffer at my front door.
Please, at the time I made that pledge, I had never heard of the Bush Administration or its evil works. Once I was inauguarated, I learned just how much more taxpayer blood, sweat and tears my hope and change would cost you.
A true believer never changes his or her mind about anything, right, Sullum? Loserarian true-believer brain-dead fuckwits think and say the same stupid shit no matter what the so-called evidence says. Go suck Ron Paul's cock!
ARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARF
Read my lips, Peter. The GOP has video of the multiple times that Obama promised not to raise taxes on those earning less than $250K.
You'll get to see all of them in the 2012 campaign.
Now I'm off to let the US Olympic Pole Vault Team use my asshole for training.
The is actually a clever plan by the president to create a one world government. See, once all the smart and talented people flee the US (as they've done in other countries), then it will bring 3rd world countries like Brazil up with the declining US.
Obama is a one-termer.
Pfft.
The GOP will nominate someone conservative general election voters hate so much none of them will vote, and libertarians wouldn't vote for Zombie Murray Rothbard With Ron Paul's Cock against Obama.
You will see his face every day until you die.
Hillary will run against him in the 2012 primary. And she will win the Dem nomination.
dude, I would totally vote for Zombie Murray Rothbard With Ron Paul's Cock.
Zombie Murray Rothbard With Ron Paul's Cock/Gary Johnson in 2012!!!!
I'm completely down with that, too!
Who wants a bumper sticker?
Hell, I'd vote for Zombie Murray Rothbard, irrespective of whose cock he had.
Ok, gentlemen. We have our dream ticket:
Zombie Rothbard/Anybody's Cock in 2012
I'll even gather ballot signatures.
We should get Bill Clinton's Cock to run with it so we can win over voters who feel like they need some more experience on the ticket.
I'm voting for the Reynolds/Washburne ticket.
You can't take the sky from me...
I wonder how much setting up and running the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform is going to cost.
Max: 'A true believer never changes his or her mind about anything, right, Sullum?'
But , but , the media insisted Obama was the smartest, most intelligent, most wise man to run for president, wow, probably in forever.
So, his intelligence didn't include having knowledge of the dire financial straights facing our nation, showing the media to be just a bunch of fawning acolytes?
Or does pulling the wool over the eyes of the electorate and LYING that he wouldn't raise taxes on a segment of the populace demonstrate 'smart' and 'intelligent' to the press?
Yes.
A politician not keeping a campaign promise? Like that's never happened before.
Obama is at least smart enough to understand that responding to reality is more important than consulting his intestines and then refusing to change his mind once they have spoken, the model of leadership his predecessor used as he fucked over this country.
I just changed my mind. Anybody's cock but Tony's.
I'm too smart for the job!
The reality is the Obama has done more to worsen the deficit problem than anyone else alive on the planet and he is now hypocritically posturing about "solving" it as a pretense to raise taxes.
The problem is excessive government spending - like Obamacare, like the so-called "stimulus package", etc. - not too little taxation.
Sure, it's common for politicians. But I thought The Great Barack was no ordinary politician.
Bush broke his promise of a humble foreign policy, where the U.S. would not serve as the world's policeman. He used the same bogus argument. I did not forgive Bush for that. I'm just holding Obama to the same standard.
Obama is at least smart enough to understand that responding to reality is more important.
Obama's response to reality was to quadruple the deficit. Hard to imagine what sort of reality Obama clings to.
Obama is at least smart enough to understand that responding to reality is more important than consulting his intestines and then refusing to change his mind once they have spoken, the model of leadership his predecessor used as he fucked over this country.
So I guess you're saying that he truly believed that he could balance the budget without raising taxes on the little people, but turned out to be wrong?
OK, then. Let's hear him say it: "I was wrong." If I could only hear him say "I was wrong" then I might believe your version. I'll wait for it.
Maybe he would like to practice it in the mirror a few times first. "I...was...wrong." I'm sure he would admit it if he made an honest error, right?
Tony has not heard of James K. Polk.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J......931849.29
Then he should learn not to make empty promises, Tony. Or "lies", to be more correct.
"Read my lips" helped sink GHW Bush. Thankfully, he was a one-termer. Hopefully, the same thing will happen to the current hood ornament.
Y'all need to back the fuck off the dear leader. Get your facts straight - if you make less than $250k your taxes WILL NOT GO UP!
Take this example:
A couple who previously made $150k annually pays, let's say $40k in taxes. Under the new economic plan, that couple will only be able to make $75k, assuming they even have jobs. At $75k, they'll only pay, let's say $20k in taxes. That, my friends, amounts to a $20k tax cut.
If you weren't so blinded by racism and clinging to your guns and whatnot, you might have understood that already.
Crammed full of win.
Worthy of my consideration... voting will commence once comments for this have topped 200.
Wow... that was chockablock with DemocraticUnderground talking-pointyness.
You're right, jasno. I have seen the light! Praise Obama!
Tony, now that i'm a member of your church, i'm gonna need a few pointers. It would be soooo humiliating if i genuflected before Him when i was supposed to be kowtowing, etc.
Every member of that church has two dimples on his chin. I think they're Obama's ballprints.
There are big brave balls, and there are little mincey faggot balls.
Obama's aren't the big brave kind, so they don't really leave the dimple impressions behind.
Huh, the Senate seems to have approved a Republican amendment to the financial bill stripping out giving the National Recognized Statistical Ratings Organizations' ratings the force of law.
Actually, Obama can keep his pledge by (1) massively increasing the money supply and (2) making it clear that his pledge must, of course, be adjusted for inflation. Repeat as needed.
I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you
Hey, you gotta be fair. Lots of people have had their taxes reduced under Obama and the democrats. They are now unemployed.
Zombie Rothbard Launches Campaign
