CBO Adds $115 Billion to ObamaCare's Price Tag
Remember when health care reform was supposed to cost "around $900 billion?" That's what Obama promised, anyway. And sure, the final cost estimate for the law came in at about $950 billion—close enough for government work, I suppose—but a new report from the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the law will actually require about $115 billion in additional discretionary spending, putting the official price tag well over $1 trillion. Here's Politico's summary:
Congressional Budget Office estimates released Tuesday predict the health care overhaul will likely cost about $115 billion more in discretionary spending over ten years than the original cost projections.
The additional spending — if approved over the years by Congress — would bring the total estimated cost of the overhaul to over $1 trillion.
…The Congressional Budget Office expects the federal agencies to spend $10 billion to $20 billion over 10 years on administrative costs to implement the overhaul. The CBO expects Congress to spend an additional $105 billion over 10 years to fund discretionary programs in the overhaul.
And remember: That original $950 billion sticker, which theoretically tallies up the first decade of costs, only counted 6 years of full-swing spending. And it ignored the cost of the insurance mandate, which, if counted, probably would have added an additional trillion dollars or more to the total cost. But as they say at The Onion, "If you love America, you throw money in its hole!"
Anyone still willing to call this overhaul "fiscally responsible?"

Yeah, these people are out there.
The real question is does she truly understand the ramifications of her position (in other words, a true radical) or is she just another self--important little college shit looking for the attention she so badly craves?
And does it matter?
So, what's CBO's excuse for missing this back when it mattered?
Their excuse is that they only counted the health care expenditures and other things expressly spelt out. This is mostly administrative costs.
The bill includes some language that says that it authorizes whatever administrative costs are necessary. It took the CBO a longer time to figure out what administrative costs would likely be needed; in addition, it wasn't in the initial calculation requested by the majority.
This report is in response to a request by Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA), ranking member on House Appropriations. His office says that he requested the report before the bill was passed, but the majority insisted on having a vote before the report came back. (Presumably the majority insists that all these administrative costs will be offset by administrative savings in the private sector, or some BS.)
Administrative costs and a few other things authorized with vague language and some spending on related programs that interact with the health care part.
I freakin' loved that Onion video. Hadn't seen it before now.
The Maxine Waters lookalike steals the show.
totally.
Let it run. The following segments are great, too.
The President and I fully understand and appreciate the hard work and dedication of the good men and women of the CBO. We realize that, as human beings, they are imperfect. We forgive them, and we hope all Americans, for the good of the nation, will forgive them as well, as we move forward and address the difficult challenges ahead of us. Thank you, and God Bless America.
Bend over bitches! Take it and smile
ObamaCare will prove to be problematic and create (most likely, like technological advances also) just as many problems as it may intend to address. It's the nature of problems for which we have no pragmatic solutions, and in the eyes of many means that we really do not have a health care issue / problem.
However, to the extent that either side of the aisle has a theoretical interest in improving the health of its citizens and the health care provided, it is necessary to recognize two very fundamental issues:
1) The politicalization of the issue, or utilization of an ideological approach, will not result in an effective solution, because most human beings are not sufficiently self-motivated to pursue optimal health. It's just not going to happen, and an ideological approach does not advance the health agenda.
2) Because of our (minimum of) two party governmental system, ANY approach formulated will be ineffective because it is a moderate, piecemeal, compromised approach to solving the problem. Imagine giving kids a vaccine which has been diluted, watered down, or adulterated with all sorts of ingredients not essential to attacking the disease.
Why do ANYTHING if it is not going to be effective? Why waste the time and the money pursuing goals through ineffective means?
This issue will NEVER be resolved by either side as long as people have freedom of choice. It's the nature of human beings.
As Dirty Harry once said, "A man (or humankind) has to know his (or its) limitations.
"Well, it's interesting to me to know why now. When you look at the black race, black people are very gifted in what we call worship and celebration. A lot of us like to dance, and if you go to black churches, you see people jumping up and down, because they really get into it.
White people were blessed with the gift of structure and organization. You guys do a good job of building businesses and things of that nature and you know how to tap into money pretty much better than a lot of people do around the world.
Hispanics are gifted in family structure. You can see a Hispanic person and they can put 20 or 30 people in one home. They were gifted in the family structure.
When you look at the Asians, the Asian is very gifted in creation, creativity and inventions. If you go to Japan or any Asian country, they can turn a television into a watch. They're very creative. And you look at the Indians, they have been very gifted in the spirituality.
When you put all of that together, guess what it makes. It forms a complete image of God."
This article, the commenters' discussion and accompanying picture reminded me of a newspaper funny I once saw with the caption, "Joe could't get to the store to buy his lottery ticket, so he just played from home." The cartoon was of Joe burning a dollar bill.
Obamacare exhibits the same sort of mentality.
My father worked two jobs so he could throw money into the money hole!
What difference does it make, the American dollar is becoming monopoly money, sooner or later we will have hyper-inflation and 115 billion will not be enough to buy a loaf of bread.
Forgive me for repeating this from a thread yesterday, but it bears repeating: there are also hidden tax changes that will mean tons of more paperwork. Short version: if you're a business and buy more than $600 in goods or services in a year from anyone, you'll have to issue them a 1099.
