Obama: We Need a Commission Because You Can't Trust Slippery Politicians Like Me to Tell You the Truth
Yesterday President Obama opened the first meeting of his National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform by decrying "the norm around Washington…when it comes to our finances": Politicians "tell people want they want to hear instead of what they need to know." For too long, Obama said, "folks in Washington [have] deferred politically difficult decisions and avoided telling hard truths about the nature of the problem." He then proceeded to exemplify this phenomenon:
We've had to take emergency measures to prevent the recession from becoming another depression….But the emergency measures have added about $1 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years. As a result, even as we take these necessary steps in the short term, we have an obligation to future generations to address our long-term, structural deficits, which threaten to hobble our economy and leave our children and grandchildren with a mountain of debt.
In other words, spend now, save later. Toward that end, Obama's offers a gesture of bad faith:
We've been scouring the budget, line by line, identifying more than $20 billion in savings this year alone.
This year alone! This year, when the federal government will spend something like $3.6 trillion, $20 billion is not even big enough to be a rounding error. If that's all that line-by-line scouring yields, we are well and truly screwed. Speaking of which:
I kept my promise to pass a health reform bill without adding a dime to the deficit. In fact, by attacking waste and fraud and promoting better care, reform is expected to bring down our deficits by more than $1 trillion over the next two decades.
Did anyone tell the president that his health care bill passed, so he can stop lying about its fiscal impact? Perhaps he is prepared to defend the literal truth of this oft-repeated statement: Health care reform will not add a single dime to the deficit; once the implausible savings, hidden costs, and overly optimistic projections are taken into account, it will add many, many dimes.
In any event, Obama inadvertently illustrated the argument for the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform: We can't trust slippery politicians like him to tell us the truth about the nation's finances, but we can trust his hand-picked advisers (because they're former politicians). Assuming that's true, their recommendations still have to be implemented by those mendacious spendthrifts in Congress and the White House. And since accepting the commission's advice is completely optional, they cannot plausibly deflect responsibility by saying their hands were tied. That does not stop Obama from trying:
It's important that we not restrict the review or the recommendations that this commission comes up with in any way. Everything has to be on the table. And I just met briefly with the commission and said the same thing to them. Of course, this means that all of you, our friends in the media, will ask me and others once a week or once a day about what we're willing to rule out or rule in when it comes to the recommendations of the commission. That's an old Washington game and it's one that has made it all but impossible in the past for people to sit down and have an honest discussion about putting our country on a more secure fiscal footing.
So I want to deliver this message today: We're not playing that game. I'm not going to say what's in. I'm not going to say what's out. I want this commission to be free to do its work.
As Americans for Tax Reform notes, this is Obama's way of pre-emptively renouncing his pledge not to raise taxes on households earning less than $250,000 a year (a pledge he already has broken repeatedly, while refusing to admit it). The president apparently plans to pretend that he had to break his tax pledge because the panel of advisers he appointed suggested that he do so. Yet he insists he wants "an honest discussion about putting our country on a more secure fiscal footing." OK. You go first.

I am truly bewildered sometimes when the man speaks. I'm just not sure if it's stupidity, actually buying in to his previous hype, or contempt for the public by lying to them so readily and noticeably.
Can't it be all of the above?
Exactly - those categories are not mutually exclusive. And Jordan, I'm impressed that you're still able to listen to him at this point in time. Just hearing his voice makes me want to smash my TV.
I was having dinner at my mom's house recently and the news was on. Obama came on and I turned off the TV saying "Every time you open your mouth, I want to punch something..." to the TV Obama. So I'm definitely there too, BP.
And yes Epi, it can be all of the above. Even in the same damn speech.
I'm with you on that, although it's not just Obama. Presidents inevitably begin to annoy me very shortly into their terms. Every time Clinton or Bush used to come on, I would either mentally or literally tune out. You know they aren't going to say anything remotely interesting or worthwhile. All presidents do is mouth platitudes.
Wasn't there an article in Reason back in the '90s postulating that Bill Clinton was a bit of a sociopath? I wouldn't apply that term to Obama, but jeez, there just seems to be something off about him. All the lying is part of it, but I get a sense that he is "faking it," somehow, in an inconsistent way. (Whereas Clinton was very skilled and consistent in his fakery.)
I think we've been electing presidents with severe father issues, and it's been showing.
The pathological lying is a symptom of sociopathy. Then again, when you look at symptoms of sociopathy/psychopathy and check politicians for them, you get a lot of potential contenders.
And I see what you mean about faking it. Obama has always come off to me as completely disingenuous. Whereas Clinton and even W had moments where I felt as though they were being genuine in what they were saying.
Everything has to be on the table.
I stopped reading right there.
How does his entire wardrobe of pants not burst into flames on a daily hourly basis?
"Whereas Clinton and even W had moments where I felt as though they were being genuine in what they were saying."
Admit it, it's because Oby's black.
RACIST!
Nah. It's just that he's a lying prick.
Then again, lying or not, if he started talking about making a Dyson Sphere, he'd totally be my nigga...
(It's with an "a", not an "er". That makes it ok. The last thing I need is the Reason squirrels looking at my wording and getting uppity about it.)
...
(Yes, this post is in jest.)
That's because they've got megalomania, which is a form of psychopathy.
Or, to put it another way, they're perverts who get their jollies on running other people's lives. The stereotypical pervert, who stands in front of his window flashing the kids walking by on their way to school, can only harm a few children at a time. The political perverts, on the other hand, can harm all of us in one go, in ways that make it harder for us to recover.
This is good bit of phrase-coining, Ted: "political perverts". I may use this recast in the form of "pervertedly political".
In case anyone is interested, here are the symptoms of antisocial personality disorder (i.e., sociopathy):
1. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behavior
2. Consistent irresponsibility as indicated by repeated failure to to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations
3. Deceitfulness indicated by repeated lying, using aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure
4. Irritability and aggressiveness as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults
5. Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
6. Reckless disregards for safety of self or others
7. Lack of remorse as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another (this criteria is the definition of psychopathy)
8. Evidence of a conduct disorder with the onset before the age of 15 (e.g., threaten others, start fights, force someone to have sex, hurt an animal, start fires that cause serious damage).
A person needs to have 3 of the 7 criteria and evidence of a conduct disorder for them to meet criteria for antisocial personality disorder.
ICGamblers,
Politicians, almost by definition, fit criteria 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7. Most of them fit the first criterion as well. Goddammit.
As the great George Costanza once said, "it is not lying if you think it is true". Obama, unlike Clinton who loved telling lies and knew he was good at it, seems to convince himself these things are true. He really seems to be able to create his own reality.
"Creating his own reality" is one thing. The fact that he is so visibly frustrated and annoyed when the rest of us fail to buy into that little fantasy world of his, merely on his sayso that the sky is fuschia...THAT is the definition of narcissism, and sociopathology.
Could it be that Obama hasn't had much practice at lying?
It's been said that he grew up in an echo chamber and has never really been challenged intellectually by an oponent who disagrees with him on the issues.
Before he became Senator, he represented a safe, liberal district in Chicago. One presumes he told his constiuents what they wanted to hear.
Now that he is President, he has to spout a somewhat centrist line and it obviously doesn't come easy to him.
Yes, I think that's part of it, at least. I also get a strong whiff of condescension, as if he's thinking: "This is b.s., but my fans and some of the rubes might go for it."
And Jordan, I'm impressed that you're still able to listen to him at this point in time. Just hearing his voice makes me want to smash my TV.
One thing I'm proud of is that I have never listened to any president say more than a few words. They make my skin crawl and I have to leave the room.
Neither have I. I haven't listened to a President since Reagan. I liked Reagan because he was very funny. The rest of them both R and D have just made my skin crawl.
Not only can it be but also shall it be. He is a complete empty suit with an overinflated ego who has idea how the economy or government actually works and no understanding beyond contempt for the vast majority of Americans.
It is bad enough that Obama doesn't know much. But what makes it worse is that he has no idea how much he doesn't know and thus no interest in learning it.
He is following Clinton's example of denying what he said no matter how many tapes/transcripts/witnesses verify a flip-flop. The media let Clinton get away with it, since the media know they are being controlled (no press conferences for what? 10 months, the only thing that comes out of the WH is controlled/pre-fabbed statements.) they are less likely to cover for his lies. The rise of the right leaning media makes it far more likely that people know the lies that the politicians tell. The pols are really baffled because they don't see anything different in the way things are done in D.C., have no idea why people are so angry at them. The people are angry because they now know what is going on, not that they are mad that they don't.
remember how much crap W got for not holding press conferences?
good times.
And for playing golf! Obama's already exceeded W there as well.
"Because a politician never believes what he says, he is always surprised to be taken at his word."
--Charles De Gaulle
I'm going with contempt for the intelligence of that portion of the electorate that voted for him.
No ... that's what I have....
My thoughts exactly.
Only his hairdresser knows for sure. What we can say with certainty is that he is a Progressive and a Pragmatist. Both those make distinguishing between fantasy and reality very difficult, since Pragmatism says there is no such thing and Progressivism provides a moral motivation for not feeling compelled to make the effort.
My theory is, Obama simultaneously knows exactly what he's doing... and has no idea what he's doing.
It's clinical narcissism. this impostor thinks that his words are like that of moses; the fact that his words at a moment run contrary to prior statements is irrelevant, in his world. he is only paying attention to the sound of his beautiful voice, all the people and cameras staring at him. THIS is destiny. governance, policy, ideology, moderation, sense, all of no interest or consequence.
Right.
A government-sponsored "truth commission."
Where does that buck stop again? No escape for you, Mr. Obama.
"I kept my promise to pass a health reform bill without adding a dime to the deficit."
I don't know what's worse--a president who's dumb enough to actually believes that or a president who's a bald faced liar.
...but it's one or the other.
"In fact, by attacking waste and fraud and promoting better care, reform is expected to bring down our deficits by more than $1 trillion over the next two decades."
I suppose the operative words there are "is expected", but misleading the American people with such baloney, if that isn't "tell[ing] people want they want to hear instead of what they need to know", then I don't know what is.
You beat me to it, Ken, but anyhoo ...
"I kept my promise to pass a health reform bill without adding a dime to the deficit."
The procedural cost of passing a health reform bill was part of the normally budgeted deficit.
"reform is expected to bring down our deficits by more than $1 trillion over the next two decades."
Indeed, reform is expected by Mrs. Argle Bargle of Chicago and several other feeble-minded listeners to bring down our deficits by more than $*10* trillion.
Continuing to study Obamaese ...
Here's my list of reasons the president has to lie when ALL lies eventually are revealed:
Wilfull ignorance
Slave to ideology
Pathological liar
Believes lies are for public good
Knows truth will only become known after term of office
Manipulating public opinion to serve hidden purpose
?????????? Anyone care to add to the list?
I don't find any of these particularly good reasons for lying...
BTW, I heard Chris Dodd on CNN this morning stating vehemently that the financial reform bill being pushed by Obama will ABSOLUTELY end too-big-to-fail. Has something been added to the bill in the last couple of iterations?
As far as I know, the only way to avoid too-big-to-fail is to write a law making it illegal for the government to loan money to (or outright purchase) businesses, or to break up big banks into smaller banks.
Am I wrong?
You left off "thinks they will always manage to stay one step ahead of the law / people pursuing them"
Also "because they can"
I suspect "Makes the wife happy" is one.
I don't know what's worse--a president who's dumb enough to actually believes that or a president who's a bald faced liar.
...but it's one or the other.
Read Orwell's 1984 about the concept of "doublethink", of being able to mouth obviously untrue stuff and believe it to be true FOR AS LONG AS ONE NEEDS TO BELIEVE THAT.
"tell people want they want to hear instead of what they need to know."
Like withholding a report by Medicare actuary Richard Foster noting that overall medical spending would rise under the health reform law until the votes had passed?
"folks in Washington [have] deferred politically difficult decisions and avoided telling hard truths about the nature of the problem."
Like Don't ask Don't tell, or the horribly mismanaged immigration policies of the federal government?
This is gonna be a long three years.
...but it's one or the other.
Or both ? if he knows it's bullshit, because everything he says is bullshit, but he doesn't know how. Remember, he's retarded. "Three thousand percent."
Eh, eh, eh.
"We've been scouring the budget, line by line, identifying more than $20 billion in savings this year alone."
It's obvious that the man and his advisors think Americans are stupid. Are we? We'll provide the answer this coming November.
I would love to see exactly what those "savings" are. I'm betting it's some combination of generic "reduce fraud, waste, and abuse" and tax increases. Because taking more money from productive earners is really just like saving it.
"We've been scouring the budget, line by line, identifying more than $20 billion in savings this year alone."
Says the guy who signed an executive order that all federal construction contracts had to go to companies with unionized work forces.
That will really save the taxpayers money, eh?
Even if the voters put the Rs in office, in November, they will still have shown themselves to be stupid.
The Department of Education is a bloated bureaucracy that has consistently failed to improve the state of education. K-12 education results have in fact gone consistently downhill since this piece of bureacratic crap was enacted by Jimmy "the incompetent" Carter and a Dem congress.
If the Obama administration and his compliant Dem congress budgets anything other than shutdown costs for this Chinese gang bang of a federal department, all talk of fiscal responsibility can be safely chalked up as self serving bullshit.
BTW Barack, we've got ~150K troops fighting dumbass wars in Asia that don't exactly come cheap.
Make that 200K troops risking their lives in Asia for nothing.
If you don't want the troops to die then you don't support them.
Did anyone tell the president that his health care bill passed, so he can stop lying about its fiscal impact?
The bill may have passed, but the campaign rolls on.
He can't employ candor. He has to keep peddling the bullshit that this is a good bill that will work, and hope people keep buying that line no matter what data points crop up in rebuttal.
Dedicated to our awesome president - something from The Rolling Stones, or, for those who prefer, Rollins Band.
What I love about Obama is that his presidency is going to get me my Censor.
I kept my promise to pass a health reform bill without adding a dime to the deficit. In fact, by attacking waste and fraud...
I know I keep pounding this drum, but it's no less true: someone who talks about cutting spending by reducing waste and fraud is not serious about cutting spending.
That's an old Washington game and it's one that has made it all but impossible in the past for people to sit down and have an honest discussion about putting our country on a more secure fiscal footing.
Here's an honest discussion: the United States will either have to cut spending, raise taxes, or massively inflate to pay its bills. Any of the three, or any combination of the three, is going to cause economic pain. In the short run, they will cause the US to slip back into recession. In the future, they will probably destroy a recovery or pop a bubble. Instituting these now will mark you as a fine statesman to historians and a dead duck in Nov. 2012. While progs & liberals are correct that governments can run deficits more or less indefinitely, that's only true if the deficits are modest. They're no longer modest, and they're becoming more immodest year by year.
Any of the three, or any combination of the three, is going to cause economic pain... Instituting these now will mark you as a fine statesman to historians and a dead duck in Nov. 2012
... those two reasons alone are why nothing will ever happen. I am of the firm belief that our fate is sealed with respect to the debt, and there's no turning back.
When something can't go on forever, eventually it stops.
Who is Obamassiah's speechwriter, Herr Joseph Goebbels?
"have an honest discussion" indeed.
That's why he wanted the health care legislation rammed through before the August break. I think the only "honest discussion" this dude had is with his kids over what to name the dog.
20 billion is only a big deal when we're talking about cutting earmarks!
No, the system isn't irrevocably broken and corrupt beyond all measure at all. It's as right as rain.
Didn't Obama have some quote in the campaign about how in big bad Washington, when people are afraid to lead, they appoint a commission?
I think you're right.
That would be gold for the Republicans if they were smart enough to dig up that quote and use it in the fall elections.
This might be what you are referring to.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl.....arackobama
The president apparently plans to pretend that he had to break his tax pledge because the panel of advisers he appointed suggested that he do so.
He's not called the "Parsin' President" for nothing.
"We've been scouring the budget, line by line, identifying more than $20 billion in savings this year alone."
This reminds me of how Dark Helmet had his troops literally comb the desert in Spaceballs except in this case, all Barry found were rocks ("Waste and Fraud" ) when he should have been looking for sand (Entitlements, DoD, DoEd, WoD, ad nauseum) in the first place.
Another analogy: its like they "cleaned" a river filled with shit by removing only the few dry green feces.
Is Barry one of the dudes with the afro pick?
"Man, we ain't found SHIT!"
The commission is just a ploy to give the Democrats and the administration political cover for dealing with the ramification of their massive spending spree after Obama took office.
It is the epitome of hypocrisy for someone who has massivly ramped up government spending and created multiple new permanent entitlements (don't forget the education tuition one) to try and hold forth as being "responsible" about dealing with the deficit.
They simply want to hook the Republicans into being equally responsible for his mess by voting to increase taxes to pay for it.
And I'm sure we will hear from all the "conservative" commentator like Frum that the "responsible" thing for the Republicans to do is once again accept the notion that they proper role is to be tax collectors for the welfare state.
Don't turn around uh-oh, Der Kommissar's in town....
The truth?! YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!
Take a gander at who's on the commission. To be honest only the Obama appointees have any sort of balance though putting an SEIU member on it doesn't make much sense if you're aiming for fiscal responsibility.
Reid, Pelosi, McConnel and Boehner all appointed sitting members of their respective parties and houses. You know, the folks who voted in this fiscal clusterfuck.
Doom
Doom!
DOOOOOOM!
Screwed up the link. Here it is.
As soon as I saw Allan Simpson's name on it, I knew the fix was in. It is just a bunch of beltway insiders sent to give the establishment a "bi partisan" excuse to continue the current system.
Lying bastard.
It's nice to see Obama say something true for once. "You can't trust us politicians." Stop spending our money, Mr. President. Check out this hilarious Tea Party footage: http://www.funnyconservatives.com/?p=842
I hate him a little more every day.
I agree w/ most posters it's pathological lying. The part that interests me is when did this start? How did he learn to do this? Why? this behavior seems to be an almost congenital part of politicians' personalities - there is no such thing as truth. There are only words that can help me and words that do not. Bcuz most people do not live this way, it takes time to recognize the behavior if ever.
When something can't go on forever, eventually it stops.
Of course. The question is, do our budget and fiscal problems coast gracefully to a halt, or do they pile up in a heap of flaming wreckage?
That second one.
Look - Progessives have to lie about what they are doing and the results because the truth would bring an end to their plans. The other part of it is that they know the lamestream media will back them up and not call them on the lies so that they can, to some degree, influence the thinking of those poor shlubs who get their news from them and thereby "create" a new reality. Since Progressives are all so much smarter than the rest of us and know better than us what is best for us, they believe that their lieing will be forgotten or forgiven once we see that while we did not get what they said we would, we like what we do get better. Remember Reagan's memorable line "It isn't that Liberals aren't smart, it's just that so much of what they know isn't true"(or words to that effect).
Almost every sentence of your post equally applies to Bush and the Iraq War. Both sides do it.
But libertarians never lie. Is that why they're never elected?
The Libertarian politicians I've heard are generally orders of magnitude more honest than Democrats or Republicans.
Unfortunately, I don't think it helps.
Can we presume that if our President is not going to dicate "what's in or out" that if Healthcare Reform is driving unsustainable deficits...its on the table to be "out" and he'll support that reccomendation...what garbage!
It's not lying like we think of lying. To an Ivy trained liberal, there is no such thing as THE truth. Truth is relative. Obama thinks his truth is as good as anybody else's, and, well, actually better because it comes from him. The notion that truth should have a correlation to fact simply doesn't enter in to his calculation of whether he's telling the truth. He's telling A truth, and since he's Obama, it's probably a better truth than anybody else's truth, and certainly better than any Republican's version of truth. It's not that he believes it so much as he finds it believable, so how can people doubt him when his intentions are so good and honorable?
Have you noticed his nose is a linger longer now then it was a year or so ago? Hmmm...
obama = the death of truth in America. problem is, that's his agenda. He's sealed his records and his heritage.
get him impeached now or America is finished.
Alinsky jujitsu with the truth, and MSM still idol worshipping..
What a bullshit piece! As the author and many of the commentators know, the CBO almost certainly underestimated the cost savings of the health care reform bill.
And anyone with any knowledge of economic theory knows that in a severe recession the government should invest in strong stimulus. Obama's plan was too small to really get things back on track quickly but after years of tax cut quackery from libertarians it was refreshing. Add that to Obama's effort to stop investing in wasteful military projects and you have the beginnings of an honest effort to address the deficit. When you consider that one of the alternatives is the fiscal delusion of Ron Paul and his followers, you can be thankful that we elected Obama president.
Good one Josh. Make sure you stir long enough to let the sugar dissolves in the Kool-Aid first so your sip isn't so gritty.
Maybe what Greece and Spain need is more spending! Yeah, that's the ticket.
What a maroon.
"Tax cut quackery" is a nice phrase, but aside from that I give it a D. More frothing insanity, plz.
Yeah! Raise taxes! That ALWAYS solves our problems!
/snark
The Commission will present its report AFTER the next election so the candidates including the incumbents don't have to comment on its recommendations while they campaign. Representative democracy at its finest.
IMPEACH THIS MORON NOW! I've had it with waking up to yet another buffoon proclamation, opinion, direction, musing of this piece of crap. I want this turd tossed out SOON. If the spineless shits in Congress can't get it together and yank this man out of the Oval Office pretty damned fast we will be completely screwed.
NO MORE; GIT!
Don't hold your breath for the WH to post a page, http://www.waste_fraud_abuse_savings.gov
Barack is awesome.
Ja! He is bringing the 4th Reich to glory in America! The USA may have delayed our rise to power in WW2, but my little Socialists are on the way to converting them into us in the end!
If everything is on the table does that mean if the commission comes back and recommends massive cuts in federal regulation and spending along with deep income tax cuts and eliminating capital gains taxes that The One will be happy?
This regime has to be stopped from their plans to bring down the USA. Vote against this government every chance you get. Don't stop writing your representatives...write ever day even if you think they aren't reading your emails. They can change the direction so far that we will never be able to turn back. And yes, Obama is a Sociopath. And a racist. And a liar. (I loved the comment that his nose is growing!)
Did anyone vote for him, or are we just preaching to our own choir? I want so badly to believe November will truly start to correct this mistake.
Oh this is funny, no one wants to admit they were duped by the one. Thats funny! Don't look at me, I saw thru him from the start.
So would Sullum prefer that Obama stick to his pledge never to raise taxes? Then Republicans could pledge never to cut Social Security, Medicare and Defense? Then we can all merrily go on running up trillion dollar deficits?
It's time to grow up. It will take tax hikes AND cuts in entitlements AND cuts in defense spending to get the deficit down. It will take both Democrats and Republicans to get on board. Or, we can go the way of Greece...
@Mike S: This would sound reasonable, if it weren't for the fact that whenever "tax hikes AND cuts in entitlements" get together, tax hikes tend to steal the show. And that's under divided government.
Also, the idea of there being serious cuts in entitlements while Obama holds the veto pen is laughable. The man can't say no to trillion dollar programs when they don't yet exist and have to be created in the face of withering public opposition. Do you think he's going to suddenly become a bean-counter when the fight turns to the long cherished entitlements that account for 80% of our red ink?
Of course not. He's going to demagogue the issue, accusing Republicans of being heartless to the elderly. He'll run for reelection on the issue of not cutting entitlements if the Republicans win this November.
I'm perfectly fine with going the way of Greece to set an example for generations long on down the line, rather than inch along with this nonsense indefinitely.
telepromter on or off someone needs to tell this guy he sounds like a novice at best....he seems to believe he's some kind of God....I don't get it...
Hello! Yes HE does think he's some kind of God, and SO DID ALL THE IDIOTS WHO VOTED FOR HIM. Not me. I knew all along he'd be the biggest mistake in American history.
Again, with more irrational hatred.
I agree entirely with the President of the United States.
Although I'll probably disagree with whatever recommendations his commission of fall men will come up with.
A couple of points to consider:
Obama's grasp of economics is limited; based on his existing decisions. Stimulus works if you have the money saved previously. Borrowing more money when the problem is too much borrowing is the equivilent of borrowing money to pay your bankruptcy lawyer.
Obama & cronies fully support the existing Ponzi schemes for entitlements (based on his helath care program jammed into America's ass last month). So to think the ponzi schemes of medicare, Soc sec, perscriptions drugs... will go away or be fixed is unrealistic.
The result of the commission will be the usual liberal congressional playbook: cut defense, tax everything, borrow/print more and spend/expand the programs... after all there are elections pending
Well, at least something good will come out of it then, if they really do cut defense spending. I'll believe that when I see it.
It's bad enough that I have to deal with this attitude of "not my fault" on a daily, almost hourly basis in my job as a high school teacher. But that's developmental in nature and there's always hope that the perpetrators will outgrow their behavior. I don't have much hope for this to happen with Obama or his many self-serving minions. Make no mistake, this is not about the welfare and betterment of anyone except the insular circle of Chicago thugs masquerading as political wonks in the White House. Where's the transparency? That darned healthcare bill never did get its five days on the internet for public review, because the people in charge were pretty sure that once read and understood that the people would not want it. Now that those pesky "facts" about costs are leaking out, it makes it harder and harder to believe anything these people come up with. No wonder they are whipping up Arizona's attempt to control its borders into a frenzy-the Obamites need political cover so they can sneak through more questionable legislation. By the way, did you know that if you are caught without visa and passport in Mexico that you could end up in jail for two years and if caught a second time, for ten? Maybe some of the protesters aimed at cities in border states should be shipped back to Ciudad Mexico to make their cases because I just don't see showing identification at the scene of a crime or a traffic accident as the same as being thrown in the poky without legal recourse.
The Congressional Budget Office says the Health Care Reform just passed, even though watered down by Republicans beholden to insurance companies, is the largest deficit reducing legislation in the history of the United States of America.
That's a fact. And yes, the author is slippery. Just like the rest of the Republicans.
Ahm. Firstly, the bill requires states to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on medicaid, while the feds contribute nothing to this. This counts as zero spending in the bill. Also, it assumes that somehow, the feds will cut 500 billion dollars from Medicare, without explaining how. Moreover, on the spending part, the feds normally underestimate spending by 500-1000% percent (check out Medicare predictions from the 1960ies). Lastly, the medical spending is going up according to latest calculations.
In short - can you explain which part of 2500 bill actually cut the federal spending, let alone the deficit?
As if your team wasn't in bed with the insurance companies from the git go? Wow. Is it the partisanship that makes you stupid, or the stupidity that makes you partisan?
Pure madness. What part of this entirely dem written and entirely dem passed abomination mandating every citizen to buy insurance from private insurance companies do you not understand?
Must have been those republicans sneaking in while everyone slept and watering down whatever. Pfft!
*barf*
Obama lies because he believes in his cause to weaken our nation's economy and military. He seeks to increase the parasite to patriot ratio. He has never solved problems. His background is that of a grievance merchant, hence the identity politics we are witnessing. This was supposed to be the beginning of a post-racial america? Sure it was. The only reason Obama got elected was the state run media's fawning love affair with his pigmentation and teleprompter reading skills.
Hey freeper... "parasite to patriot ratio" is pretty good. I don't know who'd be more proud, Orwell or Goebbels.
Your side - and theirs - fit the Orwell/Goebbels templates, Tony. Right now, though, your side has all the power cards... and is abusing the fuck out of them, just like the previous gang did when they had the deck.
You can rationalize it all you want, but we're going just as downhill as we would've been under McCain's so-called leadership.
In what way are we going downhill?
More government spending, more debt, more power in D.C.
Orwell would be proud of Tony's habit of citing Orwell while defending an Orwellian president.
to Nancy, re: "... Yes HE does think he's some kind of God, and SO DID ALL THE IDIOTS WHO VOTED FOR HIM. Not me. I knew all along he'd be the biggest mistake in American history."
you do know that the consensus pick there is G. W. Bush, don't you?
well now, isn't this an interesting collection of malcontents. Seems as though anger management classes are in order for most, if not all, of this site's posteurs...
I am completely amazed that people (ie. some of our citizenry) still seem awestruck by BHO. Have they not yet realized that the emperor has no clothes? BHO is the triumph of style over substance, lulling the masses into nodding agreement with his smooth cadences and colloquial terms ("folks" is a favorite), but the masses don't bother to question the efficacy, or even the logic, of what he is saying.
Basic economics tells you that the healthcare bill is debacle from the start. You can't provide more coverage to more people and have it cost less money. He is not stupid, he can't truly believe this - therefore, his message is completely manipulative and machiavellian. I hope someone is building the video file of all his lies and contradictions and distortions of the truth.
Good people, I could go on for hours. One truth that is self-evident - with each passing day, we are one day closer to being rid of this self indulgent narcicissist. Please, wake me when it's over. Hopefully the country will survive this debacle.
No, he is worse than stupid...he is willfully ignorant. "If you ignore the facts that don't fit the narrative, they will eventually go away." This is not a rational plan, and gravity wins every time!

Why not just go back to the spending levels of 2 years ago and freeze them across the board, and save us all several trillion over the rest of his one term??????
I call my plan SSSM -- Stop Spending So Much
Speaks for itself....
Here are the symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder according to the American Psychology Association. A person needs only FIVE of these symptoms to be clinically diagnosed as having NPD:
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
(1) has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
(2) is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
(3) believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
(4) requires excessive admiration
(5) has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
(6) is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
(7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
(8) is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
(9) shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
When all is said and done, he was elected. Simply put, people want to believe that they can have something for nothing. It is a powerful, powerful inducement.
Now I am going to eat my sugar and fat free ice cream, which is not only delicious, but increases my erectile capacity.
"He is not stupid, he can't truly believe this"
Why? He doesn't seem to have ever really done anything in his life, and probably had no use for studying.
It is going to take us citizens getting fucked for people to figure a little bit of economics out...and that sucks.
obama is an idiot. McCain, faults and all, wouldn't have pushed this asinine healthcare takeover through.
That's an important distinction that's evidently lost on some. And I'm sure he likes this country and doesn't feel the need to play po-mo english prof asshole all the time.
Did anyone tell the president that his health care bill passed, so he can stop lying about its fiscal impact?
Why would he do that?
"He is not stupid...."
This comment is, to some extent, wishful thinking on my part. Just because he can put a sentence together does not make him intelligent, and certainly does not mean he can apply in a practical way logic and reason to solving the country's problems.
But then, which Democrat does apply logic and reason to anything?
"Put a sentence together?" You mean because all this bs leading to "we are not going to play that game" is so much more ELEGANT than "we have to pass the bill, so we can find out what's in it?" What fun!! Secret Mystery Date legislation!
Hmmmmm, I wonder if you'all were applying the same standards to the president when he was someone whose politics you agreed with - do you not think that Bush was an exemplar of the Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Obama is not nearly as liberal as Bush was conservative - he is, in fact, a pluralist. He governs as though:
1) this is a nation that was founded on the principle that people from a variety of different backgrounds with disparate beliefs can live together in peace - and that those differences actually strengthen the fabric of the country
2) that governance of a large, freedom-loving country is inherently difficult and it is not possible to make everyone happy. The need to join together in common purpose on issues that can only be solved collectively, however, makes it necessary to do the best we can.
It is a pleasure to have an intelligent, capable centrist who believes that government can and should step up to the plate in certain areas such as national security, social programs and financial regulation and do its job. Beats hiring a Republican with such little faith in his abilities to make a positive difference in governance that he uses his power to dismantle instead of improve the system (i.e. "tax cuts" as the answer to every problem).
Face it. There was an election, and you lost. Defeat ain't supposed to taste good...
re FresnoDan: "When all is said and done, he was elected."
truly said. of course your comment is a cynical reference to the inadequacies of the electoral system (a cynicism that I share, by the way). It is true that Obama doesn't have the pedigree of a G. W. Bush - Obama's father was an absentee ne'er-do-well, and George Sr. has gone from "is this the best we can do" to "OMG, why couldn't he be president instead of his weak-minded offspring...". I didn't provide much of a platform for my kids - raised in rural Oregon, worked in the woods until I could start my own construction business - but my son has forged a path that has resulted in a Harvard Law degree. I have direct knowledge of how difficult that path is, the kind of intelligence and fortitude that is required to compete for plum positions that a senator's son/daughter considers to be theirs by birthright.
Here is my point: Whatever Obama has accomplished in life, he has accomplished through his own capacities - cream rising to the top. If this were a meritocracy instead of a democracy, Obama would still be where he is today. Where would G. W. be?
Mistruths, half-truths, and outright lies, this is Obama's and every other con artist's method of of convincing a mark of their sincerity and point of view. His is a confidence game of massive proportion and scope with America's future at stake. If you view what this dishonest and disingenuous President as a con, it makes perfect sense. How many voters were conned by his campaign rhetoric and oratorical skills? Enough to get him elected.
I'm not sure what he is trying to do here except run up more smoke and mirrors. The only body chartered to generate bills which require funding is the House. This politically appointed herd is probably in violation of the constitution whatever they "suggest" and for the POTUS to say (or imply) that HE will be the judge of what goes forward for possible legislation is definately a violation of the seperation of powers. I wonder when all these "minor" infractions raise to the point where impeachment is the only cure.
Americans Don't Trust Obama
How could Americans trust Obama. Obama lies repeatedly to their face, perhaps pathologically; duped Democrats to elect him President?then wrecked their Party, ordering Democrats to support suicide economic policies, spending trillions of tax dollars on senseless economic/public programs destined to bankrupt America; while Obama was endeared by his constituency of Socialists/Marxists. Obama has done more damaged to our national and economic security than any known spy working for a foreign Government. Because Obama has little understanding of economics, endemic of leftists, it is not surprisingly Obama's only solution to the economic crisis, is to keep borrowing and spending until everything collapses. Despite Obama's poor performance as president, Obama's latest poll has leveled off at 45%, the same percentage of Americans that pay no taxes.
Is it a mistake for Americans to believe Obama represents the United States? If Obama is an extreme leftist, America is in trouble. Historically extreme leftists support a Marxist ideology?that mandates crushing democracies and individualism, forcing socialism or communism on Citizens?even if that means destroying their economy and certainly their Constitution. If you look at Obama's past life, it is apparent he has associated with Communist/Marxist groups and like individuals. Many Americans believe Obama's allegiance is first to a leftist ideology, not to America. At a time in history when Americans needed a great President, they got their worst nightmare.
Openly some in the Obama Government admit they support dismantling capitalism. Whether or not their endgame entails destruction of the United States, dismantling capitalism will cause the majority of Americans to become unemployed, many forever.
When Americans voice their objections to the direction Obama is taking their country, Obama response is to propose laws to arrest Americans with no probable cause or evidence see Sound-Video:
http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/630.html and support gag legislation such as the Disclose Act. Obama's Neomarxists intend to drown out your voice, the voice of America with Obama propaganda, enforcing new regulations that will cripple bloggers and other alternative media disseminating information, free speech that grass-roots among other organizations and Citizens depend on to make informed decisions. How dare this person who calls himself President act to curtail Americans' right to know, restrict American's right to communicate via the Internet or other medium. Obama's leftists if permitted, will brainwash your Children before they gain prospective what life is about, with Obama's one-sided propaganda at school, through Obama controlled Radio, TV and Obama media policies that will restrict the flow of information. Historically when leftists have attempted or taken over a country, their first step is to control the media and all forms of public communications to control Civilian populations.
