Should Glenn "Instapundit" Reynolds Apologize to Prostitutes?
Asks Scott Stein at When Falls the Coliseum:
In a post that includes a video debate about legalizing prostitution, Instapundit's Glenn Reynolds asks, "Who needs to legalize prostitution when we already have Congress?"
Stein holds Reynolds in semantic contempt for mis-metaphorizing:
Congress is nothing like a prostitute. A prostitute only wants cash that customers actually have, and usually tells them the real price of the services being purchased. A prostitute doesn't impose hidden fees through inflation (we don't generally give prostitutes the power to print money, but somehow we let Congress approve stimulus packages and spend money that doesn't exist). A prostitute doesn't increase the national debt (in fact, it is government, by keeping prostitution illegal, that increases the deficit in yet another way, by making income from prostitution outside of the system and not taxable).

Cheap link whoring. Of course Glenn will apologize to the prostitutes. As an advocate for legalization, I'm sure he holds them in much higher regard than he does Congress.
That is certainly a funny question which shows the overall morale and attitude of the congress. However I do strongly believe that the congress have done some notable things like providing birth control pill as well to say the least and much of that can be pointed out to what they have done over the last two years. However that also does not take away the question of whether Glenn Reynolds should apologize to the prostitutes. In my opinion, she shouldn't because she is Glenn and they are prostitutes!

I suppose if the prostitute came up behind you and repeated drilled you in the anus and then demanded a great deal of money for the service that not many wanted in the first place (or the ones that would want it could have gotten it cheaper and more efficient elsewhere) then yes Congress is like a prostitute. Oh, and the prostitute gets to send spam to your mailbox on your dime about how much less lube the other guys use when they drill you in the anus.

It was the final sentence that really sold it.

Good Morning Suki.
You pegged it here, Fist.
Heh. Pegged.
The only one who should apologize is Nick for his man-crush on, and constant linking to neo-con hack Glenn Reynolds.
I'm confused, Jay: When did President Obama withdraw our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan? Did I miss something?
So Obama's also a warmonger ... what's your point?
Generally, the epithet "neo-con hack" is applied to Reynolds by liberals who tend to have a massive blind spot when it comes to warmongering by Democrats.
If you've followed this website for any length of time you'd know by now that Reason bloggers are happy to link to anyone from any political party who shares libertarian views and makes a good point in a non-pedantic, humorous way.
Reynolds tends to do this better than any other blogger, so he gets linked more. No man-crush necessary.
"neo-con" hack can be applied to anyone who did his share of hacking in favor of our current wars. Most of these hacks tend to support Obama's current foreign policy for the most part, while criticizing some for not being quite tough enough on Iran/Terrists/Russia/North Korea etc.
The neo concervatives created the name themselves in the first when they thought it would be a good thing(compassionate-pro-big-government-lotsa-military-spending-conservative). After 8 years of Bush Cheney "neo-con" became a slur and now the centrist democrats(who are basically neo-cons) and real neo-cons are always trying to hide from the name they created.
Awwwww now you did it. Responding with reason to a lib is sure to piss them off. Hey wait, maybe you did and he went to spew his hate on some other site.
I am *not* a liberal. I am a principled libertarian who's dismayed by the constant linking to Torture Supporter Glenn Reynolds.
Yeah, so what kind of hack are you?
Customers go to prostitutes.
Congress goes to me.
The government refers to his as 'increased choice and competition'
What, you never read P.J. O'Rourke's "Parliament of Whores" before? As P.J. O'Rourke noted at the end [Spoiler Alert], we're the prostitutes because while Congress may be the one getting all the money, we're the ones getting screwed.
That would seem to imply that Congress are our pimps. Which sort of makes sense, but I prefer a more parasitic analogy.
Speaking of whores, have you seen SugarFree's price list? The amount he charges extra for a golden shower is abominable.
He does have a coupon day, however.
raincheck?
Heh heh.
"I can taste the bubbles."
Coupon day is the day after he eats a lot of meat.
But it's interesting that you know about coupon day, Troy. You sound cheap.
Well, that is what happens when you comment at his blog. You get spammed with coupons and two-for-one specials.
Well, then you brought this on yourself, didn't you?
I'm going to tell NutraSweet what you said about him, too. He'll love to hear that his prices are too high. It makes him feel exclusive.
If you want cheap, there's always Warty, and I think JW's so desperate for money and stimulation that he'd probably be even cheaper.
You get what you pay for. And don't forget about Steve Smith's rates.
And don't forget about Steve Smith's rates.
Fresh, raw trout from the Wishkah?
Only for you Epi. You're one of my best charity cases.
How should I debase and humiliate you this week? Don't tell me you want to be the "naughty congressman" again.
ME NO CHARGE! COMMERCIALIZING RAPE IS WRONG!
RAPE FREE....FREE AS THE WIND BLOWS....FREE AS THE GRASS GROWS...
yeah. yeah. yeah..... tattle tale.
Of course I charge a lot. It's sweet like candy.
If your golden showers are sweet, I might suggest changing insulin.
Or try an external insulin pump, Saccharin Man.
Ketones and all ya know 😉
If you have to fight the ants off from the golden stream, it isn't really worth the charging price of high class gigolo.
"Legalize prostitution and outlaw Congress!"
To paraphrase the late Bill Buckley, the way things have been going I would rather be governed by a random collection of Madams and working girls from Nevada's legal brothels than the entire Democrat party.
Much rather.
The fetuses need to be put out of their misery.
Why? I bet most of them are liberals.
If the lobbyist (payer) are the johns and Congress (payee) is the prostitute, then the public would be the used condom holding the mess.
He does have a coupon day, however.
But no Groupon?
Yes, he does have group rates....so I've heard.
Commie!
Shouldn't that be cummy?
G, here's your chance to get published
http://www.urbandictionary.com.....=cumminist
If you weren't already a trophy, I'd marry you, or some other committed equivalent 🙂
I'm obviously too predictable for you.
I read that post and rolled my eyes at it. It's typical of Glenn Reynolds making sarcastic comments regarding serious issues without offering a substantial opinion.
It's been years since the last time he formulated his own opinion on something. The bulk of his time now is spent hotlinking one of the 12 people on his blogroll with a "Heh." or "Indeed."
Lame, Glenn, really really lame.
One thing I'll never understand is people attacking Reynolds for things like this. It's like criticizing a motorcycle for not being an 18-wheeler. It is what it is.
Instapundit knows what it does and it does it insanely well: it's an immaculately well-curated clearinghouse for political links from a libertarian/conservative perspective with only the smallest sprinkling of additional commentary. Reynolds isn't trying to crap out 4,000 word bigthink essays - he knows his strength and is smart (and humble) enough not to sacrifice his blog's accumulated credibility to turn into just another bloviator.
Has it ever occurred to people like Bingo that Reynolds declines to comment at length precisely because he enjoys gliding somewhat above the fray? Instapundit has worked incredibly hard to cultivate a laid-back mien, which is why it's so shocking when the gloves occasionally come off (usually against Sullivan).
Count me as one who thinks that Instapundit is, if anything, somewhat underrated as a blog. As ubiquitous as it is, pretty much everyone takes it for granted. It's actually pretty hard to do what he does so self-effacingly well, and it kind of bugs me that it's become hip to rag on him. It's like what Jackson Pollock said when somebody criticized his art as being easy to do. "Okay. You give it a try then."
Reynolds isn't a bad guy, but his unfortunate stance of supporting the wars rubs a lot of people around here the wrong way. He's great on a lot of other things, but many of us (including me) have a real bug up our asses about the war. So it carries a lot of negative weight when considering Reynolds compared to other factors.
I have to admit, I am so over the wars as a political football.
Which is strange, because there was a time when it seemed like The Most Important Issue In The World. Now? Feh: Obama's socializing the nation, I got bigger fish to fry.
Oddly enough, you can thank Barack Obama for that.
Obama's fealty to Bush's policies have had the odd effect of completely neutralizing the war issue. Of course, Democrat hypocrisy has helped immensely.
War has been Good for America, at least since 20 Jan 2009.
So The Surge gave us ObamaCare.
History is sadistic sometimes.
No, Obama gave us Obamacare. Not the surge. Not Bush. Not McCain. Not your creepy uncle who touched you funny that one time.
Why is it so effing hard for people to put the blame where it belongs?
I think the problem is that the wars were ever "political footballs" to begin with. The reason they get framed that way, the reason they're still being waged, is because it's not American civilians who are regularly being blown to bits.
Exactly. Also, he's a cheerleader for the very un-libertarian Sarah Palin.
If I still considered Palin a threat, this would bother me a lot more than it does. She's really taken herself out of serious contention, and I don't think it would have mattered anyway: one consequence of the dragged-out healthcare debate is that the GOP & the conservative electorate have seemingly managed to skip through their self-defeating "wilderness phase" and moved straight to an embrace of intellectually respectable figures like Daniels, Ryan, and Pence. Palin is the past. Those guys (and others like them) are the future.
How exactly is Sarah Palin "un-libertarian"? Was it when she vetoed the bill *banning* same-sex benefits to Govt employees?
Please be specific - show your work.
His tech commentary is spot-on for the most part, which is why I check on him periodically.
The things that I disklike about him are his intense Bush-apologist posts and the fact that he doesn't enter the fray. It's one thing to hold be "above" the rabble (which I consider a lot of HnR posts to be) but he crossed the line where he's incapable of actually fighting in/for/with it.
I fully realize the demographic that reads him eats that up, but he would be way more interesting if he espoused an opinion on an issue every once in a while instead of just acting like an ivory tower shitbag (which I know he's not).
There's a missing "himself to" in between hold and be.
He's one step removed from the die-hard GOP stronghold that is NRO.
Indeed
Heh.
guess he doesn't read Glen's many articles or video commentaries. Too bad, he would be better informed and more hopeful.
@Bingo: IF you did read Instapundit more; you'd find he does alot more "in the fray" stuff than you give him credit for such as: 1) Writing articles for newspapers, magazines, etc (oh and he wrote the pretty-libertarian-friendly "Army of Davids") and 2) He does all kinds of interviews for PJTV now (often regarding the Tea Party Movement nowadays) plus 3) His "Instawife" (Dr. Helen) is a welcome breath of female-perspective fresh air on some topics.
Prostitutes, God bless them. Working some of the roughest streets in America.
alan wins the thread.
I have a list of people to thank,
I would like to thank Art-P.O.G for the vote,
David Weigel for Prog Rock Fridays,
and most of all, my co-star Jennifer Connelly for the great ass to ass that has made life so worth living.
Thank you everybody!
Q: How is a congresscreature different from a prostitute?
A: There are some things a prostitute won't do.
Nicely done.
I always heard it as "there are some things a prostitute won't do for money.
Prostitutes are engaged in an honest trade and victimized by the law, their pimps (because of the law,) and some of their johns (also to a degree because of the law.) Congress is a syndicate of typically horrible shit stains that deserve every bad thing that ever happens to them and then some.
Nah, whats done is done dude.

Prostitutes engage in a mutually beneficial, consensual exchange. Congress takes your money and then stick it to you for their own benefit -- they're like a rapist who also then takes your wallet. Not the same at all.
Selling is legal... fucking is legal... why isn't selling fucking legal?
Glenn Reynolds apologizes to prostitutes when he climaxes before he enters them.
In response, they place Glenn's mouth on their balls and tell him to shut up.
Glen Reynolds has a government job at U of T.
He is a prostitute. So... fuck him and his blowhard self-importance.
Just because he has more experience than you does not make him wrong.
But he should apologize to the paid companions of America.
Mornin', Suki!
i cant belive that were debating the fact that prostitution should be legalised, its got to be th oldest profession
No, prostitution isn't even one of the top three. A biologist, an engineer and computer programmer were arguing for their professions. They agreed that prostitution wasn't the oldest, and the argument stemmed from of the three remaining professions. The biologist claimed his was as the first living things were made by God in his capacity as biologist. The engineer argued that the earth was created when God did his work engineering from chaos. And the programmer, with a smug grin on his face, asks the other two: "and where did you think the chaos came from?"
Just wait people. Now that Healthcare is done, Obama will be doing "Hooker Reform." If we could persuade him to do "Beer Reform" too, I'd be all set.
Instead of a prostitute, get rctl to blow you.
the odds are better on your wife doing it.
Question: What are the main differences between prostitutes and congressmen?
Answer: 1. A prostitute actually provides a tangible service for your hard-earned cash. 2. If she steals money from your wallet when you're not looking, she won't show up afterward at your front door every day for the rest of your life demanding more.
Yeah, that's what ex-wives are for.
The Reynolds bashing here is sad. I thought Libertarians were the one political grouping that had a 'clue'. Seeing the lame whining about Reynolds advocacy of the wars, etc. just highlights the same self-destructive behavior of dems/reps that turns on anyone who dares break from the bullet points. I also believe the current wars were required of us...if not then, in the future whether we wanted them or not. In almost everything else I tend to the libertarian philosophy. That not good enough for you? bite me
*bites Mike*
Best comment thread I've read in a while, that's why I love you libertarians. Temporarily dulled the pain...
Speaking of whores, have you seen SugarFree's price list? The amount he charges extra for a golden shower is abominable stiri sportive
All the people in this country have some rights to be respected. I do not think that if something was in another country things would be different. But these politicians have forgotten who elected them. This social class and put her shoulder to their welfare. So I must apologize.
From cheap auto parts
However, and these people should listen. Just so we can consider that a genuine democracy. People have a right to protest and get some things in this endeavor. No one took to the streets that go too well. Authorities if they understand this and will listen to people's wishes, then everything will be perfect piese auto ieftine.
Just wait people. Now that Healthcare is done, Obama will be doing "Hooker Reform." If we could persuade him to do "Beer Reform" too, I'd be all set. Pehari
The author is really a true intelligent person and I'd in no way write in these kinds of a style
I also suppose if the prostitute came up behind you and repeated drilled you in the anus. The neo concervatives created the name themselves in the first when they thought it would be a good thing.
