No recent political figure has ignited the fury of the commentariat like former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Shortly after inducing a pulse in the zombified John McCain campaign with a rousing speech at the 2008 Republican National Convention, the little-known politician was dismissed by Salon's Cintra Wilson as a "power-mad, backwater beauty-pageant casualty" whose conservative ideology made the feminist writer "feel as horrified as a ghetto Jew watching the rise of National Socialism."
The editor-in-chief of The New Republic, Martin Peretz, sniffed that the candidate "was pretty like a cosmetics saleswoman at Macy's" and that it was "good to see that the Palin family didn't torture poor Bristol [unmarried, pregnant, and 17 at the time], at least in the open." The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, a self-identified conservative who calls his Daily Dish "the most popular one-man political blog in the world," persistently suggested that Trig Palin, the governor's then-four-month-old baby with Down Syndrome, was likely not Sarah's biological child; and demanded the full release of her obstetrical records, stopping just short of insisting he be allowed to examine the placenta. If Barack Obama is hounded by a small group of reality-challenged "birthers" who doubt the president was born in Hawaii, Palin has more than matched him with what might be called her "after-birthers."
This is ugly stuff, the sort of warmed-over misogyny you expect from early '70s Hollywood, not semi-serious writers and pundits. But Palin's admirers have issues with modulation and mental balance too. Watching last year's vice presidential debate, National Review's Rich Lowry squealed that Palin's smile "sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America." As happens so often with what passes for political discourse on the right and left, those of us who stand athwart the red-blue dichotomy find ourselves yelling, "Please make it stop!"
Palin herself has added to the sense that something just ain't right. Resigning as governor last July, she delivered a farewell speech charitably described by various analysts as "rambling" and "at times confusing." Despite the fact that she had 18 months left in her first term and had not publicly announced whether she would stand for re-election, Palin averred that she was not prepared to abide "lame-duck status." Nor was she long on metaphorical integrity. "Many just accept that lame-duck status, and they hit the road, draw a paycheck, and kind of milk it," she declared. "We know we can effect positive political change from outside government at this moment in time.…I know when it's time to pass the ball for victory." She closed with a quote from Gen. Douglas MacArthur, saying, "We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction." Citing a military leader who was relieved of his command for insubordination during the Korean War may burnish Palin's proud reputation for "going rogue" (that is, going off script), but it was an odd selection for a speech about a voluntary resignation.
MacArthur is more famous for a different quip: "Old soldiers never die. They just fade away." Two new biographies of Palin—along with the self-proclaimed hockey mom's own memoir, Going Rogue, which set a record for advance orders—are helping to make sure that she won't fade away any time soon. Together, this trio of books offers more information and context about Palin than all but her most ardent detractors and fans could possibly stand. Yet the volumes, alone or together, still don't give a clear picture of either the woman herself or what it is about her that drives her fans and critics alike to the edge of insanity.
More important, the books strongly, if unintentionally, suggest that Palin does not have what it takes to redefine a Republican Party whose future looks about as bright as that of General Motors. Despite her impressive fan base and her ability to turn out huge crowds, Palin's own program for "The Way Forward" (as she names a chapter in Going Rogue) makes plain that she is last year's political model, a vehicle for a backward-looking GOP bent on blending generic social conservatism, small-government encomiums, big government spending, unconvincing outsider outrage, and status quo foreign adventurism. With a Saint Reagan statue firmly glued to the dashboard, of course.
Whatever mojo such rhetorical posturing once had, Americans have heard it all before, most recently during the administration of George W. Bush, who with the able assistance of a Republican majority managed to double overall federal spending in real dollars over the course of eight years. If the Republicans are to regroup and advance in another direction, they will need something other than warmed-over Karl Rove speeches.
As its title implies, The Persecution of Sarah Palin, written by Weekly Standard staffer Matthew Continetti, is flatly sympathetic to its subject, whom he paints as the victim of a conspiracy as vast and punishing as the Alaskan wilderness. "When they weren't mangling facts," Continetti writes, "the press did their best to undermine her accomplishments." The core of Palin's immense appeal to jes' plain folks, he says, is also the core of upper-crust contempt for her: "The American meritocratic elite places a high priority on verbal felicity and the attitudes, practices, and jargon that one picks up during graduate seminars in nonprofit management, government accounting, and the semiotics of Percy Shelley's 'To a Skylark.'?" Palin, he notes, "speaks in a different patois." This is more than a little plausible: I can remember college-professor friends of mine confessing that, in addition to Palin's pro-life stance, it was ultimately her flat, grating accent, her University of Idaho B.A., and her flute performance in the 1984 Miss Alaska beauty contest that rendered them "horrified."
But if Continetti helps explain the vitriol of many on the left, he fails to grapple with a more moderate but also widespread sense that Palin was simply not up to the task of serving as vice president. High-profile conservatives such as David Brooks, Peggy Noonan, and Kathleen Parker became Palin critics not because she was populist or pro-life (or a weak-winded flautist), but because she came across as manifestly unqualified for the job. If her résumé (small-town mayor, then short-term governor of a low-population state) was thin upon nomination, her performance in key moments afterward was often cringe-inducing. "Palin's recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate," wrote Parker in 2008. "Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League." Even Continetti acknowledges that Palin flubbed the Couric interview, which was packed with softball questions on subjects such as the newspapers and magazines she read and the Supreme Court cases she considered especially important. Given the compressed public schedule of the campaign, Palin needed to score with every shot she took. More often than not, the high school basketball champ chucked an air ball.
Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe, who covered the Palin campaign for CBS News and Fox News Channel, respectively, have a theory as to why. "Palin is neither an umblemished victim of fiendish, unpatriotic forces nor a preposterous dolt worthy only of a smirk," they write in Sarah From Alaska. She is "outwardly confident but frequently shows signs of profound insecurity" and is "hypersensitive to criticism and naysayers." That confidence and hypersensitivity got in the way of the preparation that might have helped her through what was surely a very rough political gauntlet, a long-shot presidential campaign conducted in the midst of two unpopular wars and an economic panic.
Palin's penchant for shading the truth, even on trivial matters, didn't help. One of the governor's biggest applause lines on the stump was that she had said "thanks, but no thanks" to federal money for the notorious "bridge to nowhere" at Gravina Island. In fact, Palin supported the project until it became controversial and, after it was killed, refused to return the federal funds, using them to construct what Conroy and Walshe call a "road to nowhere" leading to where the bridge would have been. To paraphrase another of her regular lines, that's absolutely politics as usual.
In Going Rogue, co-written with the journalist Lynn Vincent, Palin comes across as personable and likeable. The volume is filled with self-deprecating stories, childhood memories, moments of self-doubt, triumphs over adversity, and appeals to God and elders for advice. "My life truly began [when] I became a mom," she says in a representative passage. "I had no idea how this tiny person, my son, would turn me inside out and upside down with all the all-consuming love that swelled my heart from the second he was born. As clichéd as it sounds, that was the happiest day of my life."
Palin's style in Going Rogue even managed to charm the lefty literary and legal scholar Stanley Fish, who wrote in his New York Times blog, "I find the voice undeniably authentic.…It is the voice of small-town America, with its folk wisdom, regional pride, common sense, distrust of rhetoric (itself a rhetorical trope), love of country and instinctive (not doctrinal) piety."
Fish may be right that Palin's voice is internally consistent throughout the book, but for those of us not wedded to such a New Criticism aesthetic, Going Rogue reads like a text that is almost frantically trying to settle scores, real and imagined. Many passages get back at old Alaska nemeses and detail the shoddy treatment Palin received from John McCain's handlers before, during, and especially after the 2008 election. Even in describing her brief experience at the University of Hawaii, Palin seems to be shadowboxing with political opponents. "It turned out Hawaii was a little too perfect," she recalls of her time spent in Barack Obama's home state. "Perpetual sunshine isn't necessarily conducive to serious academics for eighteen-year-old Alaska girls. Besides, we were homesick for mountains, cooler seasons, and even snow. After that first semester, we realized we'd better transfer back to something closer to reality so we could actually earn our degrees." Hawaii isn't conducive to thoughtfulness or hard work, get it?
Despite claiming to be "like every other ordinary American," Palin is not the voice of "small-town America" as much as she is a politician vying to be the voice of those who either don't come from or don't trust major cultural and political centers. Small-town America hasn't really existed since the 1920 census, when for the first time more people lived in cities than in rural areas. In her rhetoric and demeanor, Palin is unabashedly populist, and like all populists, when she talks about the past, she is describing not reality but an idyll, a dream of an Eden that never really existed.
One of the flashpoints of Palin's vice presidential candidacy was her quick dismissal of college grads who got a passport, a backpack, and a plane ticket to Europe. No siree, she got a job (as if those are the only two possible decisions available). There is a lot of meaning packed into such a statement, and it resonates with voters who feel they are being played by well-connected insiders who look down on flyover country. In light of candidate Obama's notorious statement about fearful rubes clinging to their guns and their religion, Palin and Obama have emerged as archetypal opponents for a new generation of American politicians, with Palin as a pragmatic nativist and Obama as an idealistic cosmopolitan. Though neither speaks a foreign language, they are night and day, fire and ice, Alaska and Hawaii.
Such mythic identities are powerful but they ultimately have little to do with the way politicians actually govern. And it may be that in our moment of protracted economic crisis and foreign policy blundering we have finally reached the point where voters care more about policy than promulgation. Whatever he said on the campaign trail about repudiating George W. Bush's legacy, the sad fact is that Barack Obama is following in his predecessor's footsteps when it comes to foreign policy, the treatment of suspected terrorists, stimulus spending, bailouts, and the expansion of government entitlement programs. Notwithstanding his pretty speechifying, Obama is tanking in the polls because such policies continue to be viewed as offensive, ineffective, overreaching, or some combination of the three.
Similarly, Palin's frequent invocations in Going Rogue of free markets and rugged individualism ring false coming from a vice presidential candidate who wholeheartedly endorsed the Troubled Asset Relief Program at a point when only politicians supported it (the people, bless their pointed little heads, never have). As a former governor of a state that receives about $14,000 in federal money per resident (only the District of Columbia gets more) and whose total spending increased 16 percent between 2007 and 2009, she is not very credible as a fiscal conservative.
Palin lip-syncs perfectly to the GOP's greatest hits: "How about cutting…payroll taxes? Giving people control over more of the money they've earned; now that's real stimulus. Get federal spending under control, and then step aside and watch this economy roar back to life." That's all well and good, but nothing in Palin's record suggests she is capable of delivering on such notions or crafting the policies that would make it possible to do so. Meanwhile, Palin makes sure to hit all the major social-conservative notes as well: She invokes God almost as much as she invokes Reagan, she is anti-abortion, and she is against gay marriage (a position, she is quick and correct to note, that she shares with Barack Obama). On foreign policy, she offers only stay-the-course generalities. "I understand that many Americans are war-weary," she writes, "but we do have a responsibility to complete our missions in these countries so that we can keep our homeland safe." Palin's inability to chart anything like a truly new political course means that despite her immense popularity she is unlikely to be the standard-bearer of 21st-century Republicans. In short, she is no Barry Goldwater.
Yet as both Sarah From Alaska and The Persecution of Sarah Palin underscore, despite (or maybe because of) the intense animosity she has called forth from liberal Democratic opponents, Palin is sure to be a key player in attempts to rebrand the GOP as something other than the loser party in 2010, 2012, and beyond. Her surprising resignation as governor bespeaks an impulsiveness that is at odds with the discipline and strategy required for a long-haul role, but her ability to draw massive crowds (and fundraising dollars), and to start a national conversation via Facebook and The Wall Street Journal about "death panels" in health care legislation, suggests Palin has a strong and perhaps instinctual grasp of many Americans' hopes and anxieties.
And if Dick Nixon could come back from a humiliating vice presidential run and a godawful retirement speech, surely Palin can. Or at least try. Contrary to a controversial November 17 Newsweek cover, Palin is not necessarily "bad news for the GOP—and for everybody else, too." The real problem is that, celebrity aside, there's not much here that you could call "news" at all.

There is a large part of why the right fell in love with Palin, that people would oppose her for such shallow, snobbish reasons, as well that the most important issue in the world is keeping the ability to kill unborn children absolutely legal. People generally don't like it when you hold them and their families and their values in contempt.
You have to remember, Nick has an angelic voice, accent like Johnny Carson and can blow a flute like nobody else ever. He has room to judge.

This notion that people who hate Sarah Palin because of her earthy roots and presentation is perhaps the biggest lie in all of politics. Everyone who pushes this BS forgets that SP was very popular when she first hit the seen and gave one good speech at the republican convention. At that time, she appeared to be exactly the kind of person who could be a national leader -- a regular person with an incredible story who had risen to the top because she was smart and capable. But of course, that was a lie -- she is an idiot and incapable. And THAT is the reason why almost everyone hates her that is not contractually obligated to love pro-life, god-inspired nincompoops.
Anybody who did hate Palin because she didn't sound like she came from Harvard is an ahole that should be ridiculed, it's just that there really are only a few of those. The majority of liberals and independents that I know found her personal background pretty compelling when it seemed to be supported by an intelligent, capable person.

I know for a fact that the U.S.S.R regularly probed deep into Alaskan airspace. To the best of my knowledge, the U.S. airforce still has a small number of interceptors stationed in western Alaska to turn back Russian practice flights.

Sorry Steve, but as much as I dislike Palin, the left acted and continues to act like a pack of rabid wild dogs when her name is even mentioned. If I had a nickel for every article Huffpo wrote about her, I wouldn't have much money because nickels are worthless. Huffpo is ridiculously partisan, so i don't take them as speaking for the majority of liberals and independents I spoke of.
My brother is a perfect example. he is independent but leans right. he loved her when she first came out but slowly came to the realization she was an illusion and now mocks her.

Not that I disagree, but just look at the number of comments on this thread, and the comment threads on other websites (Huffpo for instance) and you'll see that since Palin stories drive traffic, you'll see a lot of Palin stories until she doesn't drive traffic. Whatever metaphor you want to use about a lot of people stopping to stare, she's that thing. And also to comment while staring. Well, more like shouting at the thing while staring at it, even though it can't technically hear you at the time. She's one of those things.
Maybe, but at the same time, I didn't care at all about her until I started seeing article after article about her. And even now, I still don't care, it's just hard to ignore the topic when there is so much attention being paid to her by the media. I think it's not so much her, but the way the media has reacted to her.

Right after her speech at the Republican Convention, the left wing media attacked her from a partisan perspective.
Your brother probably was disillusioned by her over time for the same reasons I was (at first). The constant picking at her (from every direction) on little things that most would have intially found irrelevant had me thinking that maybe she was not a good and strong representative of the people for change. But then I looked at her closer, analyzed the things that bothered me and the things that others were saying on both sides, and I realized that she IS someone who has a heckuva lot going for her. She is not dumb by any means--there are a few areas where she should build her knowledge base, but I think all politicians should read and expand their knowledge. Most know NOTHING about economics or even have common sense! But she does have sense and she is smart enough to surround herself with people who can help her get things done. No, Sarah would be a great leader. She has a few areas where I think she can grow...but she is not what the elitist left or right try to portray her as. And this article simply misses who she is entirely.

While I may not think much of Mrs. Palin and her ability to be VICE-PRESIDENT, the more important point is that none of these idiots applied the same level of analysis to PRESIDENT Barry O - or if they did, apparently his cleanliness and lack of accent were proxies for "the right kind of person", despite lack of accomplishment and horrific relationships with the scum of the earth who populate Chicago.

They recognized Obama was a player. One doesn't move through politics in the most corrupt city (Chicago) within the most corrupt county (Crook County) within the most corrupt state (Illinois) unless one is a player. Wall St. and the DC establishment recognized this. Palin on the other hand outed corruption within up there.

As an outsider I cannot believe that so many liberal and Democrat Americans see something wrong with everything Palin does, writes and says. Her rhetoric has expanded in the last couple years; there are more and different examples and deductions in it than there were when she was only talking to Alaska. Obama can't do that, or won't. When a situation doesn't fit any of his programmed modules, he just goes vague.
Maybe it's his speech writers who can't learn and adapt. They are a bunch of asshole kids. However, if Obama knows things they don't, he hides it perfectly. As perfectly as if he didn't know anything at all.

You don't get to be editor of the Harvard Law Review unless you're well read. You don't get through law school anywhere without doing a lot more reading than Sarah Palin will ever do. She couldn't even name a newspaper she reads.
That's not necessarily true. It takes more to be well-read than just doing a lot of reading -- the reading you do has to cover a broad array of subjects and viewpoints. Heck, you can get a PhD in nuclear physics without being well-read.
Well, he's certainly read more cases than Palin. Let's get something straight: The era of the scholarly attorney is mostly dead. I knew remarkably few people in my class that read much outside of cases or legal works. Not that some of them weren't well-read from their prior lives, but not during law school. I caught heck a few times for reading a novel or some sort of science book. A good friend of mine who went to Yale related a similar experience.
Let me confirm from first-hand observation that it is impossible to graduate with honors from Harvard Law, much less be on the Review, without devoting yourself almost exclusively to reading the law.

The big negative for me is that she quit as governor: I understand why she resigned, and she was subject to a level of media hostility I don't think I've ever seen in 35 years of following politics, but it still makes me question her toughness. I would have rather her said FU, I'm sticking it out for another 18 months. Would Reagan have resigned in similar circumstances?
It does amuse me to see the criticism levelled at her for having written notes on her hand for a speech, when the POTUS needs the TOTUS to say good morning.

How about this: Sarah Palin is a mediocre politician who was picked because of physical appearance and fit the mythic Main Street narrative the right wing clings to. And, yes, they do cling to it. This state has a civilian population which is comparable to a few large cities. If she were a he, "he" would have disappeared from the news by December 2008.

Actually, I think the bigger problem is that the media coverage started to be a lot more "Palin v. Obama" than "McCain v. Obama". I don't remember ever seeing a VP candidate overshadowing a Prez candidate like that before.
Governors deal with natural resource development, deployment of military personnel, sometimes extradition issues, legislative branches, sometimes interstate commerce, sometimes border issues (both State and International), etc. The duties of a governor are of a fundamentally different nature than that of a mayor and much more like the duties of the Prez than a mayor's duties are.
I was amused to see Rudy demonstrate how limited his view of American politics was when he was asked soon after gearing up his primary run to explain his support for gun control. His answer was something like 'People need to understand that I was the mayor of a city which had 2000 people shot by handguns a year.' There are so many red flags for 2nd Amendment supporters in that statement and Rudy was totally oblivious to how such a statement would be received, particularly by Repubican primary voters. New Yorkers pride themselves on being cosmopolitan and beyond parochialism. Ruby demonstrated just how unjustified that pride is.

This begs the question, why is it that the empty suit now occupying the Oval office, with NO, NONE, NADA executive experience, is deemed more capable of leading than she? Why? Because he has a law degree? This oxymoron has never been explain clearly and this is why both your and the mainstream's argument against her and the unending critisizm of Govenor Palin falls deafly away. As for Palin's resignation I suggest you actually read her resignation speech and learn that she did it because her detractors were flooding the courts with bogus law suits that cost the people of Alaska millions of dollars and thousands of man hours; and cost her hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend (all of which have subsequently proven to be without merit). She had a choice: she could, like Barack Obama, ignore the responsibilities that her constituents elected her to handle to hit the campaign (money) trail to pay her legal expenses. She could remain in office and let the Alaska taxpayers fund a never ending stream of baseless charges against their governor: or she could do the right thing and resign. As governor she had put into place competent people who would continue to work for their constituents without her. If only every politician would be so honorable.
Any contention about Sarah Palin's qualifications to be president, against the backdrop of the utter incompetence and incomparable inexperience of Barack Obama is absolutely laughable. She had more experience in governance after her first week as mayor of Wasilla than Obama has today. She actually accomplished things; she was actually accountable to her constituents; she actually eliminated government waste and cronyism, regardless of which political party was responsible for it.
I think you should take 5 minutes and read Article II of the COTUS. You will find there an enumeration of the specific responsibilities delegated to the POTUS. Take another 5 minutes and read the Bill of Rights and you will learn that not only is presidential responsibility limited to those enumerated responsibilities; but there is specific prohibition against assuming any additional authorities or responsibilities other than those enumerated. Checking the list, I believe you will not find any that require extraordinary capabilities. Nor will you find any authority to "fundamentally transform the USA" by any federal officer or branch of government. Quite the contrary, each federal officer is required a solemn oath NOT to fundamentally change the USA before being vested with any federal authority.
Unlike president Obama, Sarah Palin appears to comprehend that the COTUS was specifically structured to be a "charter of negative rights" regarding federal authority; and a proscription against assumption of any authorities not enumerated in the COTUS.
The left hates Palin because she is a constant reminder that there are very specific rules governing America, and they aren't the rules of the elitist leftists, but the rules delineated in the COTUS. Progressives (Republican and Democrat) hate Palin because she understands that the COTUS is not a "fluid document subject to social interpretation", as reinforced by the oath of office of every federal officer required before being vested with any federal authority; but rather a list of specifically strict restrictions on the authority of the federal government.
For the Progressive McCain to select Palin as a running mate was a serious mistake because it brought into clear focus that McCain is not a Constitutionalist, and it demonstrated to Constitution-loving Americans that there were, in politics, acceptable candidates who deserved their support, such as Sarah Palin.
If the attempted destruction of the global financial system, designed, implemented and empowered solely by Ivy League 'educated' perpetrators is any indication, we should take an Idaho BA over an Ivy League JD every time. If we consider the never ending, un-Constitutional power grabs of Ivy League 'educated' politicians and Justices over the past two generations, we should automatically exclude from consideration any candidate with an Ivy League education. We'd clearly be much better for it.
Our Constitution is written in very direct and clear terms and does not require great intellect to understand it: in fact, it appears that those self-proclaimed to possess great intellect have done it egregious harm over the past 60 years. For example: "the Congress shall pass no law restricting the free exercise of religion"; or "the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"; or "no person shall be denied Life, Liberty, or property without due process of law" are as straight-forward and understandable as any expressions ever written. Yet "great intellects" have bastardized them so that neither mangers nor the Ten Commandments can be placed on government property; governments at all levels have infringed the right of the people to bear arms in every way imaginable; and babies are murdered by the thousands every day without the slightest effort of due process of law to protect their Creator-given right to Life.
Regarding the receipt of federal funds by the State of Alaska, it's probably inconvenient to note that according to the COTUS, it is the Representatives, not the Governor who have the authority to generate federal spending bills. Oh that pesky COTUS!

Alaska where she governed is the perfect example of a place with rural sensibilities. Again Gillepsie fails to see the forest for the trees. Her popularity is not just with the Republicans but with a good measure of the conservative middle, a force Reagan tapped. Republicans represent a spectrum of positions of which Goldwater was one strand.
We would not be having this conversation if Palin lacked a charismatic ability to communicate. Her early training, education, and career were centered around the art of the communication of ideas.
Reagan's early career as we were so often reminded was also centered around communication skills, acting is if nothing else the effective communication of ideas and emotion sufficient for people who know better to temporarily suspend disbelief.
Gillespie must know that politicians are successful to the limits of their ability to communicate the essence of a narrative and wield power both stategically and tactically. We don't know what she's going to do, but an objective observer would note she has a track record of effectively doing both.

I think Nick does a pretty fair assessment of the situation. He like most pudits however assumes that Sarah Palin wants a future in politics. I dont think she has any plan to run for office. You dont go into tv if you think you want to run for office. Who was the last president who also had their own news opinion show...never happened and never will. I find much of what she says makes good sense...but she says it in a way that makes me shake my head. Should we tap our energy resources in Alaska and elsewhere, sure if its part of a bigger plan to provide short-term energy while we create and transition to the next generation of energy. Even when the bridge funding was an earmark, she always stated they would take the money (as any good governor would), but there were other/greater infrastructure needs in the state. It's in the record. Indeed, when the money was removed as an ear mark and replaced as an equal appropriation for infrastructure in Alaska (at her urging?), she took the money (as any good governor would) and used it for the "other infrastructure" and said the bridge was too expensive and not high enough priority. As any good governor would.

But as far as truth is concerned...it is not a real political view. You are either conservative or not. One can be conservative fiscally and moderate socially. Or one can be liberal socially (meaning libertarian as in one who seeks freedom) and be fiscally conservative. Or one can be socially conservative and fiscally conservative. There are various combinations of all political views... But the point is that Sarah Palin has NEVER been a "neocon" -- she has always been conservative at one level or another.
