In Search of Lost Dining
Another surprising area for sharp memory is the taste and texture of cheap candy. Not imported chocolates, but Red Hots, Good and Plenty, Milk Duds, Paydays, Chuckles. I dreamed I got a box of Chuckles with five licorice squares, and in my dream I exalted: "Finally!" With Necco wafers, there again, the licorice were the best. The peculiar off-purple wafers were space-wasters. As a general rule in candy, if anything is black, red or green, in that order, I like it.
Roger Ebert's surprise, after spending a lifetime in movie houses, at finding he has strong memories of candy is one of many endearing moments in his farewell to eating, drinking and talking. (I'm not totally sure on the third item; at one point Ebert writes up what seems to be a live conversation.) It's sad to learn that Ebert -- of whom I am genuinely fond and who earned his ticket on the space ark with Beyond the Valley of the Dolls -- is so terribly afflicted. But he is still producing, in this case a reverse-Madeleine essay in which a philosophical truth (courtesy of some Jehovah's Witness friends) sends the writer on a journey through memories of food:
And from that time I began to replace what I had lost with what I remembered. If I think I want an orange soda right now, it is after all only a desire. People have those all the time. For that matter, when I had the chance, when was the last time I held one of those tall Nehi glass bottles? I doubt I ever had one from a can.
The whole piece is loopy, moving and well worth reading. And take a few minutes to appreciate some memories a young Ebert helped create for all of us:

You, Mr.Cavanaugh, need a hobby. Or are you the weekend guy? None the less, I appreciate the weekend material.
Tim's stories are fun.
True, but that clip from "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" has driven me to the drink. Just to cope, you know.
I'll watch it again this afternoon when drink time begins here 🙂
This is my happening and it freaks me out!
Groovy.
Ebert has fucking lost it.
Siskel & Ebert gave the public healthcare proposal thumbs up
Which version was it in when Siskel was still alive?
I want to live in 1970. Hollywood was so much more honest.
Hey, dude, how about a little NSFW warning? Some of us have to toil under the omniscient gaze of The Man.
The mention of grass is bad where you work? The Man is an uptight man.
Maintain, heller.
The Man will get a contact high.
I think he's referring to the giant nipples at 1:10, the ass at 1:23, and and the giant set of tits that belong to the 1:23 ass at 1:24.
just a guess.
Did you write those down for future use?
Hell ya, and I just wanted to point out what you were talking about.
I don't mind you indulging in H&R's innocent foolishness, heller, but I do draw the line at viewing giant nipples!
Oh, Z Man, I get it now, lol.
Good Morning reason!
I sure feel sorry for the guy. It's a hell of a way to go.

Roger Ebert gave "Blue Velvet" a thumbs down. He gave the Cedric the Entertainer/Mike Epps remake of "The Honeymooners" a thumbs up.
Take a moment to absorb that...
Ebert's always been a liberal pussy who allowed his own political (read: nigger-lovin') predilections to obtrude into his film criticism. A good writer, probably a nice guy...but he gave a motherfuckin' thumbs up to "The Honeymooners." (Along with other such meisterwerks as "Cop and a Half," and "She Hate Me.")
Rest in etc., Roger...
Shut the fuck up, moron.
Ummmmm...no I won't, faggot.
🙂
Hey, blow me!
Ummmmm...no I won't, faggot.
🙂
He's still alive, idiot.
Where did I say he was dead, shit-for-brains...?
Read cloooooosely, lest you confirm your nescience in public...
Einstein may have been commenting on my 5:21AM comment you know. Threaded comments can confuse the greatest minds, and him too.
"Raaaaacist!!"
Ebert certainly is...
It was groovy seeing former congressman William Jefferson in that clip.
Didn't you see me, too?!
That clip was outstanding.
Never saw any Russ Meyer fare, but after that, Beyond is in my queue.
You've never seen Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! before?
Nope. I'm way behind on my cult queue. One day....
Everyone should see Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! at least once. It's like finding the Holy Grail.
Mystery Science Theater never riffed on Faster Pussycat, which is a glaring omission... but they did do Kitten With a Whip.
Holly Grail is one of the great unused porn names of all time.
I concur (assuming it is actually unused).
Googled first before writing and I was astonished.
I knew Ebert was in poor health, but I didn't know it was that far along. I always prefered Siskel, his taste in film were more in line with my own, but I still appreciated Ebert's opinions just the same and their raport with one another was legendary (the new guys just don't cut it). He at least appreciates gratiutious female nudity in film and saw nothing wrong with it if done well.
That is one metric ton of adjustment to make that late in life. At least he types fast enough that he could still have a conversation a'la Hawking. I don't know if I could adjust to not eating at that age. Old habits and all (yes, i know that is the point of the piece...). My hat's off if he can make the shift and keep his sanity.
Needless to say, at some point, life ain't just worth living and it's time then to have a spectacular and headline-making death, or at least a heavily hit video of it on YouTube.
I miss Gene. Watching him tear Roger a new one for liking mainstream stuff was always classic. Gene was a dick, but he was my kind of dick.
Why do you say that? The guy didn't seem particularly short.
You're making the mistake of projecting your own inadequacies on me, Art. Bad mistake.
No way, dude. I make up for my inadequacies by overcompensating, not projecting.
at one point Ebert writes up what seems to be a live conversation
In an earlier post he discussed using voice synthesizers.
People still watch and read those kind of reviews?
I thought I was old and out of touch.
No, he's old and in touch. Before his health failed him, be prided himself on being the only major critic to watch and review EVERY movie release, year after year. Few people have stayed as dialed in to pop culture late and life as Roger Ebert, and fewer still who can also write well.
To think that most of the people in that clip are going to be collecting Social Security and draining Medicare gives me the heebie-jeebies!
Wow, dining out is all the rage isnt it?

You insensitive clod bot!
Eat Out Often!
That's good advice, RestaurantBot...
Wow dude that actually makes pretty good sense dude!
In the unlikely case you need another reason to respect Roger Eberet, this review of Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy should help.
A mainstream film critic reveiwing a porn flick takes stones.
I remember that movie. It was rated R and in "regular theaters". I know, I was 11. There must have been a "scaled down" version of it. It was a double feature with Tunnel Vision when I saw it.
As far as porn flicks go, it was very well made, with professional production values and acting.
I know, it's low bar to clear.
"And from that time I began to replace what I had lost with what I remembered." I love that line. Interesting that he has replaced eating with memories and dining out with writing.
Now, it's Michael Medved's turn...
Tim,
Sticking Ebert on Ark B? That isnt very nice. I mean, sure, at least his telephones will be clean, but still.
Morbid but psychedelic.
Having lived with someone who lost their larynx, and understanding how that reduced a sense of self (not being able to engage in dialog) it was interesting watching an interview a year or so back.
He would write his response and pass it to his wife, and every time she read one, she said "Roger says..."
*Very* considerate.
I think this has been posted before but you can't get too much Ebert.

Libertarians eat too much food and watch too many movies.
None of your damned business, rctL. Nor of the government.
Statists think other people have too much fun.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is Meyer's undisputed masterpiece and one the ten best films ever made. You can watch it over and over again and every time you will find some hidden gem that you missed the first time around. It's not perfect- I think Meyer erred in making "superwoman" and actual woman. According to Ebert, Ebert just threw that idea out as a lark on the day they filmed the scene and Meyer, as he was wont to do, found it hilarious and decided to alter the script to include it. The same impulse was at work in Erica Gavin's extended "dead fish dance" in Vixen. Gavin just picked up the fish as a joke but Meyer found it hilarious and told her to keep going and going. One "goof" to note in the above clip is Z-Man's comment about seeing Kelly earlier in the studio. There must have been a scene filmed where he is in the studio and meets her but in the final cut Z Man was never in the studio.
"the ten best films ever made" RR,you are FDAS.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is Meyer's undisputed masterpiece and one the ten best films ever made.
I could tell by the clip that it was not even as good as the old biker movies on MST3K, Mr. Schilling for Big Ebert.
I find myself taking that trip down memory lane everytime I walk into a Cracker Barrels. They have all the old candy and softdrinks!

Holy shit! Awesome humor, Anon-Bot!
After I leave Cracker Barrel, I go to the park and eat dog shit. With cheese on it!
Another reason to dig Ebert is that he isn't afraid to revisit films and change his opinion. A foolish consistency being what it is, ya know.
That and he personally responded to an email from the Urkobold once.
Good stuff for my night, thank you.
