'If You Really Want to Go After the Mexican Cartels…You'd Legalize Marijuana'
Can we add conservative uber-columnist George Will to the list of prominent pundits who recently have questioned marijuana prohibition? Not quite, but some of what Will had to say on the subject during the roundtable discussion on yesterday's edition of ABC's The Week was encouraging:
In California…marijuana is essentially legalized. We have legalized gambling in this country…It used to be considered a sin and a crime. With no national debate and no decision moment…we legalized prostitution, as anyone who opens a telephone book and looks under "escort" can tell you.…And we probably are in the process now of legalizing marijuana…Eighty percent of the revenue of the Mexican cartels is marijuana. If you really want to go after the Mexican cartels—and I'm not saying that's the only criterion for public policy— you'd legalize marijuana.
It's not clear that Will welcomes legal gambling, legal prostitution, and legal pot, but at least he understands how prohibition strengthens organized crime. And even if he doesn't support legalization yet, at least it's in his vocabulary.
Unfortunately, Will did not stop there. "There is one problem," he said later in the discussion, reporting that he had learned from a recent conversation with drug czar Gil Kerlikowske that "marijuana is getting much better." He did not explain why that's a problem.
The clip from The Week is here; the marijuana discussion starts about four minutes before the end.

With no national debate and no decision moment...we legalized prostitution
As the owners and employees of the Emperors Club can tell you as Spitzer blogs for slate, Pseudolegalization is not legalization.
He's trying to unload 15 kilos of schwag.
Who the fuck buys Mexican weed?
When I went to NMSU, I did. There was nothing else. And $150 for a QP is quite a deal.
And if you couldn't find beer, did you dog drink piss instead? $0 for a free pint is quite a deal.
Har har. Actually the stuff I found, after you got all the seeds and stems out, was green with red hairs. And it did the job. And toward the cooler season the density of the bud actually improved quite a bit.
Weed snobs suck.
Not as bad as shitty weed....
Acapulco Gold, Oaxaca Sinse.
But that was the '70s. In the '80 Mexico was just a place Columbian weed had to cross to get here.
Total bullshit!
No, it's true. Cartel de Mexico Ltd. stated that ratio in it's latest securities filing.
reporting that he had learned from a recent conversation with drug czar Gil Kerlikowske that "marijuana is getting much better."
Geez, that's where gets his info from?
And yes, it is getting better. Even an amateur like me was able to grow some good stuff (over seven years ago), using just a storage locker, a 250W HPS lamp, and a couple of fans. The pros are getting yields that are denser and way more potent, meaning IT TAKES LESS TO GET THE SAME EFFECT!
Besides the obvious problems with taking the Drug Russian Despot as an objective source of information, there's also the nagging question of how Kerlikowske himself would know it's getting better. Is he reluctantly taking a couple of hits now and then for the sake of the country's children?
Just to make explicit what is implicit in this comment, since it takes less to get the same effect, that means the product is safer. This is because you don't have to smoke as much; you don't have to hold as much hot air in your lungs. Yet the prohibitionists try to scare us by citing the fact that the stuff today is more potent than it once was.
Yet the prohibitionists try to scare us by citing the fact that the stuff today is more potent than it once was.
At fleeting moments when I'm not feeling cynical, I think that they actually believe it. They're not trying to scare us, they're trying to warn us and save us. In a weird way its altruistic.
I'm habitually cynical though, so I don't grant them that often. And fuck those meddling douche bag prohibitionists either way.
The product isn't any safer, since you've NEVER had to smoke it. You could always take even the worst Mexi saute it in some butter and use the butter to make cookies or brownies or something.
The time really has come for this, hopefully conservatives will jump on the band wagon for this. Though, I'm a bit skeptical, the other day I heard a conservative on Fox News say that legalizing pot would cause organized crime to get involved with the pot trade. I had a major what the fuck moment there, isn't it involved now, wouldn't it do the opposite?(for reference some blond chick on Oriley, can't be bothered to look up the details) Later Oriley opined that 70% of child molesters are drug users. Guess he failed that "if 70% of wobbles are snobbles" question on the SAT's.
Here's link to brain dead hoover/oriley clip for anyone who gives a crap..

Say what you'd like about O'Rielly, but don't dis Hoover. She has the tightest asshole ever.
Might be, but it is sucking all the blood out of her brain.
Karl Hess told the story that his Mafia cx were unable to procure for him any weed, saying, "We can't control that [product]." OTOH, after casinos were legalized in Las Vegas, the mob moved in. I just report these facts.
I remember him telling that story too. Fascinating man, sorely missed, even after all these years.
He also used to tell the story of Barry Goldwater coming to his room when he was staying at the ranch, sniffing the air and saying something like "Mmm, I miss that smell, it reminds me of when we still had working cowboys here."
No point, just that I like a good story.
As a resident of Indiana, I'd welcome this new cash crop as a boon for our farmers.
The thing is, pot is stupid cheap to grow, you can get 3 lbs a plant if you grow it outside. If you smoked an 1/8th a day, you'd still have some left over all that for the price of one seed and some miracle gro. Vs. today to buy 3lbs of decent stuff, you'd be looking at a few G's.
try 4k for 1#
DON"T USE MIRICLE GRO!!!!!!!! It will kill them (or so I have heard). Get some Happy Frog.
Miracle Gro is OK during the vegetative phase. I wouldn't use it during flowering (or any fertilizer, FTM), unless you like your bud tasting like chemicals. Personally I had good results from African Violet food.
Better yet, loose the soil.......
how come growing weed has to be so complicated?
Is there a growing weed for dummies book?
Yes, the internet.
Growing outdoors strikes me as problematical for security reasons.
I suspect if pot is ever legalized the cops will be flooded with complaints about garden raids.
I fear that there is a population that would find such pickings too tempting and that we will never eradicate such.
When was that picture taken? 1981?
It's not getting better. Sobriety is getting worse.
Heh. Sort of like: oil is not getting more expensive, the dollar is just worth less than it used to was.
You might could say that.
"less than it used to was"
So where in the south are you from?
Down here where I be staying.
I'm from the South, Widow. Mocking your pain.
We had better do something. What is going on in Mexico is coming here. I sent this to Reason but those bastards I think have stopped reading my e-mails. Very interesting and depressing article about the Mexicanization of our border law enforcement. Prohibition is going to turn us into a third world country.
http://www.city-journal.org/20.....ption.html
In recent months, the FBI's Criminal Division has created seven multiagency task forces and assigned 120 agents to investigate public corruption, drug-related and otherwise, in the Southwest border region, says Debbie Weierman of the FBI's public-affairs office in Washington. Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection, the largest U.S. law enforcement agency, has increased the number of its internal investigators over three years from five to 220.
I am going to enjoy watching these cops turn on themselves.
Prohibition is going to turn us into a third world country.
Tell it to take a number and sit down.
he had learned from a recent conversation with drug czar Gil Kerlikowske
You'll pardon me if I don't believe a fucking thing the head of the ONDCP says about drugs. Every single person who has held that office has lied through his teeth about every aspect of the drug war.
Bush jr.'s first drug czar quit claiming he realized that the drug war was nothing but a war on ourselves, and our families. That was pretty honest.
I don't know if I could get through a conversation with the drug czar without kicking him in the nads.
But that's probably just me.
Nope, not just you.
I don't know if I could get through a conversation with the drug czar without kicking him in the nads.
But that's probably just me.
Maybe. I'd just choke the life out of him.
It depends on how you define "better". When alcohol was prohibited, it certainly got "better" in that it was so strong you could go blind. When prohibition was ended I think we can agree that alcohol got more objectively "better" by differentiating into a variety of brands and concoctions. If drugs were legalized you could let the market and regulation take care of the strength/purity issues and people could find the brand that worked for them.
Prohibitionist arguments like the one parroted by Will have been around for ages, and I suspect they will be with us for decades to come.
You didn't go blind because of it's strength. You went blind if it had methanol in it. Don't they teach you kids anything today?
Yeah I was taking a shortcut there, duly noted.
John, have you seen Serpico? I mean, this is not a new development. You know the French Connection? All 25 kilos of heroin were swiped from the evidence locker by cops and sold.
Stop the Drug War has a weekly list of corrupt cop news items.
Some weeks have over a dozen individual items.
I have to say, George Will merely stated marijuana is getting "better." That doesn't sound very negative to me, in fact, as a stoner, it sounds positive! Maybe George Will rolls fat blunts?
Fuck George Will. He's still pissed that they didn't make him commissioner of Major League Baseball.
If you were passed over, for any job, in favor of Bud Selig, you would be pissed too.
game, set and match
I'm not sure how Will feels about gambling in general, but he once wrote about state lotteries that the government should not exploit the weaknesses of its citizens.
I can't fault him on that.
Dude, they're not talking about Mexican weed, they're talking about weed grown by Mexicans here in the States. Virtually every day, the sheriff's pull another million bucks of high grade weed out of the Sierra here in California. And it's almost all grown by Mexican nationals. There's gold in them thar hills senor.
So that's were the guy who mowed my lawn disappeared to.
So if better is worse it must be 1984.
How can we enjoy the munches if David Kessler is on a tasty-food warpath?
It amazes me that Will, despite his seeming intelligence, makes such stupid remarks. Doesn't he realize that alcoholic beverages come with different "proofs". That's why whiskey is served by the ounce while beer is serve by the bottle. Similarly, if pot is more potent, users will simply comsume less to achive the same result. DUH!!
His problem is, 'if canna is grown right, certain properties are released'
The plant can release a set number of chemicals which deactivates patheogens and pushes them to the surface of the skin, through the sweat glands, the pore of a hair or the other vapors of the body, this is accomplished by greater capacity by sexual activities, the plants extracts have thee ability to block patheogens from entering the neuro receptors of the brain also.
Should i even be telling you this?
