Public Option: Mostly Dead?
So, the most robust verison of the health care reform public option is mostly dead:
After debating all morning and well into the afternoon, the Senate Finance Committee voted against an amendment, written by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) that would have added a public option to the panel's health care reform bill.
The final vote was 8-15 with 5 Democrats--Sens. Kent Conrad (D-ND), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), Tom Carper (D-DE), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT)--voting with all Republicans to kill the proposal.
But, as Miracle Max points out in The Princess Bride, "It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive."
Next up, Chuck Schumer's more modest public option proposal.
Stay tuned.

OK, extra points for managing to work The Princess Bride into a discussion about Obamacare. Of course, it's obviously racist, but bonus points anyways! 😉
Good. The longer the intra-democratic squabbling can be drawn out, the more likely the plan will be scrapped entirely. If this can be pushed back past Christmas, Congress goes into election mode for 2010 and they'll start feeling the heat from the tea partiers.
The public option was the least offensive part of the bill.
Wake me when the mandates are dead.
Sen. Grassley: "Medicare is part of the 'social fabric of America.'"
Would someone *kindly* explain what this could possibly mean? For instance, what are all the other parts?
[to the Public Option] Prepare to die.
Rich, the other parts of the fabric include: union labor, paying your taxes on time, baseball, American pie, your mom, Top 40 music, and tremendously obese people on Rascal scooters.
Rich,
"Would someone *kindly* explain what this could possibly mean? For instance, what are all the other parts?"
Duh! Motherhood, baseball, and apple pie; you fucking Communist!
Not hemp, then?
Not hemp, then?
Get out of here, you deadbeat hippie pothead!
Get out of here
Why? Work's not part of the fabric.
Inigo, did the public option kill your father?
Now if only we had a wheelbarrow, THAT would be something.
Yeah, yeah, sure. How many times did we hear "Prepare to die, Mr. Bond."
Goldfinger had a better version: "No, mister Bond, I expect you to die!". But then he pussed out on it.
I just don't get it. If the reason for a public option is to keep insurers honest, why hasn't some liberal saint started his own insurance company that isn't so greedy?
Since there is no friggin' way this congress is going to pass positive health care legislation, I'd rather they load up the health care bill with so much shit it dies from an obesity related illness.
why hasn't some liberal saint started his own insurance company that isn't so greedy?
Then he would be morally violated by his contact with filthy lucre.

I love the "social fabric" phrase, personally. It conjures images of lots of lines of thread binding everyone tightly into a proscribed position in society. Where they are forced to serve an overall scheme or patern, such as a tapestry.
Anyone who uses it is betraying the fact that they implicitly think people need to be "kept in their place", and used according to some master plan.
Next up, Chuck Schumer's more modest public option proposal.
Please tell me it includes eating the children.
Rich, the other parts of the fabric include: union labor, paying your taxes on time, baseball, American pie, your mom, Top 40 music, and tremendously obese people on Rascal scooters.
I never heard of American pie. But I like the sound of it.
Public Option: Mostly Dead?
Well, Andre the Giant is dead, at least . . .
Andre the Giant has a posse.
Next up, Chuck Schumer's more modest public option proposal.
Sure it will be modest . . . as modest as the girls in Cathouse.
"and tremendously obese people on Rascal scooters."
I'm very trim, but I see they have those for people to use at the supermarket. On the one hand I think, riding around on one of those in the grocery store would be fun. On the other hand I think, yeah, but I'd be taking my first "step" towards being a citizen of fatty land.
"Sure it will be modest . . . as modest as the girls in Cathouse."
Stereotype much? How inherently lazy of you, Old Mexican.
Braaaaainsss!!
Maaaaandatess!
Pre-exisiting conditions!
Sen. Grassley: "Medicare is part of the 'social fabric of America.'"
I do not think it means what you think it means.
The Schummer ammendment is also dead.
Sen. Grassley: "Medicare is part of the 'social fabric of America.'"
I haven't checked for a while, but I know Iowa for a long time has had the third highest percentage of senior citizens in the US (behind the retirement meccas of FLA and AZ).
So even a dyed-in-the-wool conservative like Chuckles has to suck up to the old people.
I never heard of American pie. But I like the sound of it.
Get Don McLean's Greatest Hits, it's 6 versions of "American Pie" and a live take of "Vincent."
I once had a DJ friend claim that the popularity on the radio of "American Pie" was solely based on the fact it was long enough for the DJ to go take a leisurely dump.
The Schummer ammendment is also dead.
it took a dagger to the heart
Somehow I think it's fitting that Congress is in the Thieves Forest.
The Senate floor being the Pit of Despair, of course....
The Schummer ammendment is also dead.
it took a dagger to the heart
Shit. I wanted it to be "to the pain."
Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!
Can I choose who gets to wallow in freakish misery? Please!?!
Can I choose who gets to wallow in freakish misery? Please!?!
You're looking for the DEA. Down the hall and to the right.
Ah, I see that the Senate Finance Committee is paying close attention to the Rasmussen polls. That's very good. Even better, this vote means that even their internal polling must be showing that the democrats are in serious trouble for the midterm elections next year. Outstanding.
Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!
Can I choose who gets to wallow in freakish misery? Please!?!
OK, but only if that miserable, vomitous mass, Chuckles, gets to tag along.

I've met him a couple of times. He's actually a pretty decent guy.
Now Tom Harkin, he should be hog-tied and stuffed in a barn where he can do any more damage.
I want my free-market healthcare back you son of a bitch!
If any Americans want all government, all-the-time, in every orifice, they have plenty of options to choose from.
Move to some socialist country where you can fist yourself and shout 'yeah, socialism OBAMA-MY-MAMA!' all day long.
You want to bring that shit here? You are likely to end up with a rifle butt caving your face in; we will be saving the ammo for real opponents.
Have fun storming the castle!

Your way is not very sportsmanlike.
I've met him a couple of times. He's actually a pretty decent guy.
I had a "Meese is a pig" t-shirt back in college in the 80's. Didn't care for the guy and thought he was facist swine and would have done a little dance if he keeled over while delivering a speech on how porn is turning us all into vicious, killing, raping monsters.
Fast-forward about 15 years and I'm working with Ed Meese. He's like a nice grandpa. He was hard to hate.
Fuck.
I want my free-market healthcare back you son of a bitch!
We had that? Shit! I missed it!
"Can I choose who gets to wallow in freakish misery? Please!?!"
Obviously that's Waxman.
The 'ole no one's a villain in their own eyes thing.
Often the most effective advocates genuinely believe what they say, and are really trying to help. It's the bit where people who say "...if only we could sit down together and really listen to one another..." have a point.
But they're still annoying pansies. NTTATWWT.
Rockefeller and Schumer YOUR FANTASTIC! 🙂

Why A Strong Public Option Is Essential - By jacksmith - Working Class
Robert Reich explains the pubic option: http://bit.ly/dDYSJ http://robertreich.blogspot.com/
Hollywood Supports The Public Option 🙂 http://bit.ly/3XLwPi
It's not just because more than two thirds of the American people want a single payer health care system. And if they cant have a single payer system 77% of all Americans want a strong government-run public option on day one (86% of democrats, 75% of independents, and 72% republicans). Basically everyone.
It's not just because according to a new AARP POLL: 86 percent of seniors want universal healthcare security for All, including 93% of Democrats, 87% of Independents, and 78% of Republicans. With 79% of seniors supporting creating a new strong Government-run public option plan, available immediately. Including 89% of Democrats, 80% of Independents, and 61% of Republicans, STUNNING!!
It's not just because it will lower cost. Because a strong public option will dramatically lower cost for everyone. And dramatically improved the quality of care everyone receives in America and around the World. Rich, middle class, and poor a like.
It's not just because it will save trillions of dollars and prevent the needless deaths of millions more of YOU, caused by a rush to profit by the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!
It's not just because every expert in every field, including economist, and Nobel laureates all agree that free market based healthcare systems don't work. Never have and never will. The US has the only truly free market based healthcare system in the World. And as you all know now, IT IS A DISASTER!
It's not just because providing or denying medically necessary care for profit motivations is wrong. Because it is WRONG! It's professionally, ethically, and morally REPUGNANT!, Animalistic, VILE and EVIL.
THE REASON THE PUBLIC OPTION IS ESSENTIAL:
The public option is ESSENTIAL because over 200 million of you are trapped in the forest of the wolves. Which is the forest of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! With no way out except through needless inhumane suffering, and DEATH. While the wolves tear at your flesh, and rip you limb from lib. Then feast on your lifeless bodies like a dead carcase for transplant parts.
At the most vulnerable times of your lives (when you were sick and hurting), millions of you have had to fight and loose cruel, but heroic battles. Fighting against the big guns of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! in the forest of the wolves. All because you have no place else to go. You have no other CHOICE!
But the PUBLIC OPTION will give you someplace safe to go. And it will give us someplace safe to take you. The public option will be your refugium (your refuge). Where the wolves cannot get at you when your down, hurting, and vulnerable. Where everyone who needs it can find rest, security, comfort and the care they need. Protected by the BIG GUNS of We The People Of The United States. THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE AND COUNTRY ON EARTH.
This is why it is so critical that we do not lead another 50 million vulnerable, uninsured Americans into the forest of the wolves, without the protections of a Strong Government-run public option. We The People Of The United States MUST NOT LET THAT HAPPEN to any more of our fellow Americans. If healthcare reform does not contain a strong public option on day one. YOU MUST! KILL IT. Or you will do far more harm than good. And millions more will die needlessly. Rich, middle class, and poor a like.
To those who would continue to obstruct good and true healthcare reform for the American people, and who seek to trap millions more vulnerable Americans in the forest of the wolves. We will continue to fight you. We are prepared to wage all out war against you, and will eagerly DESTROY! you. Time...is...UP! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! No Co-op's! No Triggers! NO INDIVIDUAL MANDATES! without a Strong public option on day one.
Healthcare reform can be the GREATEST! Accomplishment of our time and century. A time when future generations may say of us, that we were all, AMERICAS GREATEST GENERATIONS.
BUT WE MUST ACT!
I therefore call on all my fellow Americans and the peoples of the World. To join us in this fight so that we may finish becoming the better America that we aspire to be for everyone.
SPREAD THE WORD!
I have been privileged to be witness as many of you fought, and struggled to take your first breath, and your last breath on this earth. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. Life is precious.
Whatever the cost. WE! MUST SUCCEED.
God Bless You My Fellow Human Beings

My concern with this health care reform, as an Independent, is that it's all over the place, there are not enough specifics and it must be put into writing and as if "written in stone" so that not every illegal that comes to the US will get free healthcare and those that work hard all their citizen life in US pay for every "Tom, Dick and Harry"
Here is proof of the public "option" being a trojan horse to create a single payer system. Joey Panto calls advocacy groups and uses one of his many alter egos to pose as supporters of their statist causes, and draws out their hidden agendas without much prompting. Here he gets a prominent universal healthcare advocacy group's director (I wish he would reveal her name and her organization) to admit that their hidden agenda is a single payer system, elimination of fee for service, and public health benefits for illegal aliens.
