President Announces Martial Law, Praises Socialized Medicine, Calls for Destruction of Israel, more
Well that was a lot of tsouris over nothing. President Obama's speech to the children comes across without controversy or (except for the "I'm working to get schools the resources they need" bit) politicking of any kind. Even the inevitable say-no-to-drugs reference was veiled, with a simple reference to avoiding kids who want you to do something you know you "shouldn't." The only weak point was when he followed up an admonition that kids shouldn't pin their hopes on becoming entertainment celebrities or sports stars with two examples of successful people: J.K. Rowling and Michael Jordan. Prepared text. Video.

The performance was cruel and unusual punishment for those
who were forced to endure the coma-inducing verbiage.
Which madrassa was he speaking at again?
Wont someone think of the children.
I recorded the speech and just finished listening to it in reverse. Just as Glenn Beck predicted, there are numerous instances of the phrase Kill Whitey.

I was surprised at how well Obama did this. He said almost nothing that was controversial, but he was a little hypocritical. Talking about how we have to work hard to succeed and then how badly he wants government health care in real life. Don't match up very well do they?

The most inspiring moment was when he said that this country wasn't founded by school dropouts ... like George Washington and Ben Franklin ... er, nevermind.
My son called my wife from school to see if he could get out of watching it.
He got stuck watching it with the rest of his classmates, but I actually teared up a bit when I heard that. That's my boy!
But....but....Bill Clinton killed Vince Foster!

"too rong; didn't leed"?
"Tim's right; Democrats linger"?
"twisting ribbons; dowdy lebsians"?
"Ted (Kennedy) rots; dead leaves"?
My God... you're a genius.
So now being libertarian means being okey dokey with political leaders addressing our children at government-run institutions? Just as long as the actual text of the speech doesn't offend us too much? I don't think I got that memo.
Even ignoring the fact Obama mentioned how important government is in educating our nation's children and how it should continue, it was the wrong thing to do.
George Bush probably wouldn't have used the powers in the Patriot Act to randomly violate the rights of Americans. That doesn't mean the ability to should be in existence.
You don't give a man the power to overstep his boundaries and then hope he doesn't abuse it. You don't give him the power to begin with.
That reminds me of the Eddie Izzard bit...
Guidance counselor: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Child: an astronaut!
Guidance counselor: Aim lower; Britain doesn't even have a space program.
Child: I want to sell shoes!
Guidance counselor: Aim lower.

Obvious career choices for the class of 2020: Cop or government Czar.
The issue for me is the president addressing kids like this in the first place. They're a captive audience. And yeah, Old Man Bush shouldn't have done it, either.
I don't give a rat's ass what he said. It was the event itself that bugs me a little.
You should be proud of your son, JW.
He or at least one of his deputies should do this every day. But I think it would be better if instead of giving a speech he could summon our nation's children to morning exercises.
I think it depends on the age of the kids. I don't see a problem with politicians talking to high school kids. Teenagers are old enough to know politics and are not going to be unduely influenced by a single politician. But, what is the point of speaking to grade school kids? It just looks bad if nothing else.
Further, if he had gone out to talk to one class, that would have been one thing. But to beam himself out to every classroom in America is pretty damned creepy. Speaking to one class allows kids to ask questions and get the experience of meeting a famous person. This in contrast was a one way experience. I don't blame people for getting upset about that one bit.
The part about his father leaving when he was 2, BULLSHIT. His mother was enrolled in classes in Seattle in August '61 and didn't return to Hawaii until after Obama sr. had left for Harvard. The part about being raised by a single mother, BULLSHIT. He was raised mostly by his grandparents. The part about his mother not sending him to the American kids school, BULLSHIT. He didn't go to that school because he was getting schooling at an Indonesian school because he was an Indonesian citizen! The part about working hard to succeed, BULLSHIT. When has Obama ever worked hard? He won his Illinois seat by getting his rivals' signature petitions thrown out. He did nothing while he was there. He won his Senate seat because of scandals by his rivals. He did nothing before he ran for President. All his other jobs he was given by friends or family friends. What a joke.
No, being a libertarian means asking you, "What are your kids doing in a government-run institution in the first place?"
That's the beauty of Libertarianism.
It means whatever you want it to mean!

too ridiculous; didn't listen
He didn't go to that school because he was getting schooling at an Indonesian school because he was an Indonesian citizen!
Oh boy, here we go.
Back in 1973 my sixth-grade teacher made us watch Spiro Agnew's resignation speech on TV. Naturally, we were bored to tears and the teacher scolded us and reminded us that we were witnessing history unfold.
Which was true, but it still didn't help us pay attention.
For the record, I was going to let my kids watch the speech even before the White House re-wrote it to make it non-political.
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.
Franklin wins the thread!
Seriously... if you have such a problem with the president talking to your kids, maybe you should home-school them.
As a former elementary school student, I can say that hearing a speech from the president would have been kinda cool. I know times are a changin, but back in my day we elementary school kids weren't so politicized that we couldn't enjoy having the president talk to us. It's not like much of what he said would've stuck with us anyway. I think the whole thing would have been a quaint memory.
I like the video game strawman though.
It's nice to see that the president isn't above stereotyping a large and diverse demographic and see nothing wrong with invoking those stereotypes against that very group while they're a captive audience.
At least he touched on very little of substance and virtually nothing new.
Listen to your teachers, parents, grandparents and other (random?) adults-Even though those very people are the ones who've caused the various crises he's sure he can fix.
Have a good attitude even when confronted by a group (school admins) that believe you are inferior and unworthy of rights and can be strip searched for something as minor as prescription strength ibuprofen. Basically, students in school should smile and OBEY.
Somehow I don't think this speech would be the same if he were addressing any students whose attendance of that school were voluntary.
Cavenaugh,
You had to be wearing the special sunglasses to see what the real message was. It was of course "Obey".
"PUT ON THE GLASSES!"

My son just called...he said "Dad, The revolutionary war was led by people who went to pubic schools! wow, I never knew that. They also were forced to say the pledge of allegiance every day...there is so much about history I learned today."
David Steele is a former 20-year Marine Corps infantry and intelligence officer, the second-ranking civilian in U.S. Marine Corps Intelligence, and former CIA clandestine services case officer.
Steele has previously written that "9/11 was at a minimum allowed to happen as a pretext for war".
This month, Steele went further, writing:
Pakistan briefed Cheney [about the plans for the terrorist attacks ahead of time] ?nations also got wind of this and warned the CIA. We also had two walk-ins to the FBI, one in Orlando, one in Newark, that were dismissed by the FBI because the names were all virgins and not in the FBI data base-the arrogance of stupid bureaucracy.
Cheney saw an opportunity for what Bush called his trifecta, and gave it to him by giving the go-ahead to ISI and Al Qaeda, and ordering up a terrorism exercise that allowed him to send all relevant close-in air defense strip alert craft away from the target areas, and to disable the NORTHCOM normal response to flight path diversion.
Seriously... if you have such a problem with the president talking to your kids, maybe you should home-school them.
One thing I do wonder about: How much pressure does the administration exert in order to get buy-in from all these local school districts? From a separation of powers standpoint, I believe the prez should be free to threaten to withhold federal funds from schools that don't show the speech, but of course it would be a scandal if he did that openly.
John, you can just cut and paste my name. It's right there on the page.
damn troofers...when is the CIA going to get rid of all these freaks?
Everyone knows this could have never happened because SOMEBODY would have come out and spilled the beans!
Did he tell them about the mountain of debt that they would inherit?
Never assume malice over stupidity.
John,
"Teenagers are old enough to know politics..."
Actually, my parents are strong, religious, republican partisans, but my dad has always been of the opinion that it's all just too complicated to understand. My mom just does as she's told (by the church). From all of that, up until I got out of college I still hadn't formed a political opinion. That was until I saw this site, and realized that people can analyze and understand political action, and that the reason it didn't make sense before was that I had never had the options before me, so I opted out.
I must admit that I was also one of those kids that had to be told that Santa Claus wasn't real instead of figuring it out on your own and just going along with it because it made your parents happy.
I still don't think my experience is too unique, even though it is a common myth that most people that "change" their political ideologies after moving away from their parents do it to spite them.
"But, what is the point of speaking to grade school kids?"
The President is a famous and important person, whoever it is. For such a person to give a "do your homework and eat your vitamins" speech to kids just seems uncontroversial to me.
I can remember "assemblies" when the local sports jock would come tell us such things, surely the President of the most powerful nation in the world is a good fit to do the same.
Yay, Emerson!
Another favorite bit from him:

Yes?
WTF?
JW,
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. . .and I'm all out of bubblegum.
Wait! I have some gum. Juicy Fruit OK?
Nah, I hate gum.
From that description I'd've guessed sex before drugs.
Why shouldn't kids have sex? It's the fast track to the welfare train: the sooner they get on, the longer they can ride!
Spare us your white trash reminisces, NutraSweet. We don't need your life story.
I can remember "assemblies" when the local sports jock would come tell us such things, surely the President of the most powerful nation in the world is a good fit to do the same.
Obama is president of China now, too?
Obama is president of China now, too?
At least he is the first Black president of someplace. Clinton didn't beat him to there too, did he?
Most kids probably thought the whole thing was an extra-boring episode of Reading Rainbow anyway.
Why did he talk about working hard to succeed? He should have talked about how to be a Chicago mobster as a springboard to the Presidency.
"The only weak point was when he followed up an admonition that kids shouldn't pin their hopes on becoming entertainment celebrities or sports stars with two examples of successful people: J.K. Rowling and Michael Jordan."
Oh, and the parts where he references, in not so veiled terms, how our children's responsibility for success is not just for their own selfish reasons, but for the future and good of our country/the Motherland/the Red, White, and Blue; blah, blah, blah.
Yeah, no other "weak points" to worry about.
My son just called...he said "Dad, The revolutionary war was led by people who went to pubic schools!
Who could blame them, if that's all they dealt with all day?
Most kids probably thought the whole thing was an extra-boring episode of Reading Rainbow anyway.
Why is LB kind of girlie today?
"""He should have talked about how to be a Chicago mobster as a springboard to the Presidency."""
He's saving that one for his novel.
Cue Stewie.
Why is Worf holding his hand? How did they have two kids? Adopt? Tommy has two dads.
Take my Worf, please!
Beckon the little children unto me. Wasn't that out of 1984 or a Marvel Comic Book on the dastardly deeds of Dr. Dementia....or Obama. Can't remember which. Maybe the good book....you know...the one Obama doesn't read much.
Hey, did you see that. I swear, my typing hesitated a bit, like it was being monitored, then I saw a flash of FU pop in the middle of my sentence and go away. I've never FU seen anything like FU that! Is Obama trying to communicate with me through his Omnipotent Power.
Obviously the school kids dug the little guy, but I still think it was to prove to everyone that he, Obama the Dalhli-Llama has the power to shape your children's lives....whether you want him to or not. But more importantly, I think it was a diversion to keep you focused on this item, just like the Van Jones deal, or healthcare battle, or the payola and bailouts (well that was to break our country financially forever) while he and the World Health Org are working feverishly on the flu shot, the troops, the martial law, and the FEMA camp thingys....all to topple the government and the rest of the world, just to decrease the 'surplus' poplulation. If you don't believe it...then FU. Ooops...there it goes again! UF Uh huh...that must have been a college dropout who did that one!
Seriously folks, if we don't put a lid on that crazy SOB (Silly O Bama) through congress, we sure as hell won't have to worry about healthcare. Get real and get to writing, calling, emailing, screaming, whatever it takes to get through to your reps to repeal laws that grant him power to declare martial law, and bring him up on charges for failure to uphold his oath of office, and for not being fiscally responsible, and for all that he's done to our country, and countrymen (he's definitely not one), since he stepped up on that throne. HE'S JUST ONE NARCISSISTIC MANIAC..NOT A GOD...AND WE'RE AN ENTIRE NATION. DON'T LET HIM DESTROY US! REMEMBER WHAT HE SAID IN HIS SPEECH, "I CAN'T WALK ON WATER." NO YOU CAN'T YOU SOB, BUT YOU CAN SURE POISON IT! (CHECK ARTICLES ON FLUORIDE IN WATER GOOGLE; DR. BLAYLOCK)
He needs to hear from the people...and that's US. Do it, or get buried by him. Realize that much of what he says he says and does is in concert with a hidden agenda as the oligarchy pulls his silly strings and makes him speak to school children like howdy fucking doody.
Oh yeah, let's also push our reps to deny him any more special appointments unless they are approved by both sides of the aisle. 37 of them? That's a FU dictatorship in the making....and those are his henchmen who'll all chant..TOGETHER.....WE.....WILL ....RULE....FU....THE .........FREAKING...FU........WORLD....FU
(then they all laugh while aborting your baby for you...the crazy power hungry SOB's.}
Come on let's become an actual 'movement' and do away with this FU crap.FU We'll call it the Anti Bowel Movement for FU FU real sh**heads. ....let's flush them out with the biggest email hit in US history to your local reps and the ones who sit on their hands in Washington who better get off them quick, wash up, and give him a piece of their mind, or else we'll fire them!
Check out Massachussets patriots going for the throat of one of their own by starting impeachment proceedings of the constitution hating maniac who sponsored the "Let's fill their arms full of holes" mandatory vaccinations. The Anti-Bowel Movement could pay him a visit and jab some flu juice tainted needle in his nuts....just to see if they develop cheeks like Hillary's, with bright red rash on his bag. We'll do that before we'll consider taking it, and then we won't anyway....but it would be fun as hell to do!
Hell, maybe his nuts will grow sharp teeth and bite his fat ass with all the poison's they've put in them.
No, no, no....I am not advocating any violence here. None. I was only dramatizing an effect of swollen bojangles. Violence is what they they want people to do. We've got to be smarter than our enemy.
And remember, they don't have to taint all of shots they give us. Some will probably just be filled with Hanna Montana cool aid and others will be not so cool aid.
And if Obama gets up with a magnum of flu serum and has that old broad named Felatio...I mean Pelosi jab it in his ass while he bends over the teleprompter...just too show us that it's okey doaky, it will no doubt be from the same batch that they gave the 400,000 troops that will make them impervious to the flu so they can be on America's streets whipping our asses into shape while we just stand there puking and farting at them as our only defense...and totally diseased.
Just one little vial FU full could wipe out our country, being carried around inside people and spread everywhere FU they go, while a different batch just gives kids Autism, ADD, and older adults a different 'syndrome'. Fish tank water is probably cleaner.
Think about it. Believe it. Do something about it dammit before it's too late. I am, my kids are, my friends are...because we don't want to die. Do you?

"But, what is the point of speaking to grade school kids?"
It's called indoctrination. Same reasons you send toddlers to Sunday school. get'em young!
Here's a gem:
Rand Loves Obama's Speech?
"Rather than any lefty, neo-socialist, communitarian brainwashing, President Obama's speech to your kids reads like a paean to individual striving and free market capitalism, the sort of thing that Ayn Rand and Barry Goldwater might have signed onto."
OhYeah,
That was pure crazy, undistilled.
Truth be told, I have a lot less trouble with the Prez as Guidance Counselor/civic booster/inspirational speaker-in-chief than I do with him being the Czar of a the Czars remaking America into a utopia of his own design.
Funnily enough, if you do distill OhYeah, it comes out really smooth, with that sweet, nutty overtone which distinguishes a fine whine from a bug-eyed rant.
