Big New Journalism Idea: The Hate Beat
So, Missouri School of Journalism Assistant Prof. Charles Davis, a self-described "near-absolutist First Amendment advocate," is making a splash with this column advocating that newspapers create a "hate" beat. The "best way to beat hatemongering," his subhed advises, "is to report it." I didn't realize that we were now teaching strategies for "beating" various societal phenomena in J-school, but I will admit to a certain unfamiliarity with academia.
Anyway, some of Davis' writing I think illustrates, in an unintended way, why people distrust both journalists and those who deliver lectures on the topic. For instance:
Hate, shuffled off stage in the post-racial haze of the election of the nation's first black president, is back with a vengeance. Hate, if it ever truly threatened to leave the political stage, is most definitely back, larger and nastier than ever.
To get all journalistically theoretical for a moment, what is the definition of journalism? Well, I don't know, but I do know that one thick chunk of the idea is to write or say (or aim to write and say) things that are unequivocally 100 percent true, and hopefully verified in some way. This is even more true, if such a thing is mathematically possible, for those who deliver lectures on all that should be true and good about journalism.
What, class, do we notice about Davis' statement above? IT IS DEMONSTRABLY FALSE. We used to have slavery in this country, and Jim Crow laws, and all kinds of officially sanctioned, legalized discrimination against disfavored minorities. And you want to tell me that hate is "larger and nastier than ever"? We had a CIVIL WAR in this country, where people not only brought their legally licensed firearms to townhalls, but they MURDERED THE SHIT OUT OF ONE ANOTHER. How many people died in racially fueled street riots 41 years ago, compared to how many died in racially fueled street riots in 2009? This little couplet, tossed off without evident concern, as if OF COURSE we all know this is true, is blatantly, sophomorically, and insultingly untrue. It's an advertisement for the author's fundamental lack of seriousness about the very subject he aims to address. More like this:
Somewhere, somehow, the news media have to make the same determination those brave civil rights-era reporters and editors made: This is wrong, deeply wrong, and we must cover it, day in, day out, like any other beat, albeit a more distasteful beat than most.
The same? Really? Let's see, every day in the Jim Crow South (and not only the Jim Crow South), black people were denied entrance to schools, businesses, and various public facilities, and when they attempted to be treated as equals, they were routinely met with official state violence. In 2009? Some loathesome individual citizen, with no official power over anyone, brings a "Death To Obama, Death To Michelle And Her Two Stupid Kids" sign to a political event at which no Obama attended (he is detained by the Secret Service). A man exercising his legal right to bear arms shows up on the periphery of an Obama event and menaces no one (the White House later says it has no problem with citizens legally bringing guns to public gatherings). Fox News alarmist Glenn Beck, ridiculously, claims that Obama has "a deep-seated hatred of white people," (and is rewarded for his omniscience with an advertiser boycott). Slappable broadcast shouter Sean Hannity "openly relishes violence" (this is Davis' claim), while Rush Limbaugh mentions "Obama" and "Hitler" in close proximity. That's the sum of his examples.
To draw any kind of equivalence between the official, police-backed bigotry of the United States–a bigotry that waged violence and worse against patriotic American citizens each and every day of each and every week–with the widely condemned hyperbole of talk show hosts and a scattered few non-violent acts of individual citizens, is not just kind of basically obscene, and an insult to the casualties on the often very lonely right side of the Civil Rights struggle, but it also serves to undermine faith in the very project under discussion. If this is the cavalier attitude with which ever-crusading journalists are going to treat the facts that concern them most, how can those of us who disagree with their basic premise begin to trust the forthcoming product from the Hate Beat?
Meanwhile, I can predict the kind of "hate" that will escape attention by the new desk. It's the kind that assumes, lack of evidence notwithstanding, that we are always–but especially now that liberal Democrats run the country–on the verge of a race war. It's the kind that takes a surface look at current events, luxuriates in historically ignorant alarmism, then proclaims that America itself is "delusional," "irrational," "hysterical." You can't get away with hating a (Democratic) president's policies, or even a single policy, but hating on the country as a whole for failing to get on board? Well, that's just journalism!

MURDERED THE SHIT OUT OF ONE ANOTHER
I like this a lot. It's both pithy and technically accurate.
---------
I tend to think, though, that "than ever" is being used by the fellow idiomatically and not literally, and is meant to be comparative to recent times, not all of American History.
I love your rants, babe, but an assistant professor at a backwater journalism school writing in the daily paper of Columbia, MO is just about as influential as that guy with the "Death to Obama" sign.
It's Mizzou. What do expect. I've had the joy of dealing with this crowd for a while now. Luckily business schools tend to be less retarded, the poli sci and econ classes are a true test of my ability to maintain a 4.0 GPA by not opening my mouth.
Tulpa,
Mizzou is one of the upper J-schools.
Matt, I agree with the sentiment, but you gotta hit the bong and relax a little. You're going to give yourself a brain aneurysm otherwise.
I agree with 92% of what Matt said. This in no way reflects any personal bias whatsoever, despite the fact that I could not help but notice that the guy in the picture (Missouri School of Journalism Assistant Prof. Charles Davis) seems to be at least partially black. I'd like to believe that fundamental philosophical principles are, and should be, colorblind. That's what the progressives tell me, and I believe them.
RACE WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Slappable broadcast shouter Sean Hannity...
That made me laugh a very long time. Thank you.
Elemenope,
"I tend to think, though, that "than ever" is being used by the fellow idiomatically and not literally, and is meant to be comparative to recent times, not all of American History."
You're probably right about the rhetorical intent, but it's not as if the era of blatant, openly state-sanctioned racist violence and oppression was all that long ago. Millions of people alive today are old enough to remember when Jim Crow, miscegenation laws, and lynch mobs were a going concern.
Concerning Welch's original post: a self-description like "near-absolutist First Amendment advocate" makes me antsy. In my experience, that sort of terminology is almost always used in much the same way that people say, "I'm not a racist, but..." It's not guaranteed that a person who says that is about to go on a racist rant, but it's a pretty strong warning sign.
Best rants on the intertubes.
ed,
So now all slightly overweight, hysterical, nerdy-looking dudes must be black?
Remember when I predicted the next witch hunt a few threads down? So it begins.
Millions of people alive today are old enough to remember when Jim Crow, miscegenation laws, and lynch mobs were a going concern.
Very true, though Mr. Assistant Professor pictured above looks a bit too young for those things to have played a major role during his lifetime.
In general, when a person is talking about time, there are two periods. The Great Before time (demarcated by "I haven't been born yet") where everything is academic and of "ancient concern" only...and then there's the only time worth discussing (that is, everything since the great birth event).

"Slappable broadcast shouter Sean Hannity..."
That made me laugh a very long time.
Me too, except cable news isn't, you know, broadcast news. That's one of the reasons why I gave Matt's rant only a 92% favorable rating, +/- 3 points. But (and this is a big but) if Mr. Hannity also has a radio show (and who on the right doesn't, according to the envious, Fairness Doctrine-loving left), then the broadcast reference remains a valid one. Only Matt knows the real truth.
The columnist wars. Begun they have.
(whispering) matt, hate is all around us. it's more insidious now that it has gone underground. you can't see it. that's how you know it's there.
Dagny T. | August 19, 2009, 7:27pm | #
ed,
So now all slightly overweight, hysterical, nerdy-looking dudes must be black?
Nah. I said he seemed to be at least partially black. His apparent hysterical nerdiness has nothing to do with his race, or lack thereof, in keeping with neutral, objective, colorblind politics.
ed,
Just busting your balls. I'll refrain from making a lowbrow "and this is a big but" joke, just cuz you're such a nice guy.
"In general, when a person is talking about time, there are two periods. The Great Before time (demarcated by "I haven't been born yet") where everything is academic and of "ancient concern" only...and then there's the only time worth discussing (that is, everything since the great birth event)."
shouldn't we expect a journalist to at least try and avoid this? what passes for quality journalism? if your perspective is that narrow, you should probably be in another business...
You want to cover hate? Just follow Mr. Balko. He does a very nice job of covering real hate.
So happy you noticed the big but, Dagny.
Say hello to Francisco for me. 😉
Mizzou is one of the upper J-schools.
FWIW, it's also one of the very few U.S. colleges (perhaps even the only one) to own a network-affiliated, commercial TV station.
Yet another reason in a long line of reasons why the word journalist is just another pejorative.
(present company excluded)
Matt Welch is a shill for Big Racism.
i *love* matt welch's rants!
the word journalist is just another pejorative
It needn't be, and I haven't given up all hope for the profession, tho' I'll admit my favorite columnist is Mencken. Too bad he's still dead. If somebody could connect a turbine to his coffin and a cable-news hookup, he'd be able to provide for all of Baltimore's electrical needs.
FWIW, it's also one of the very few U.S. colleges (perhaps even the only one) to own a network-affiliated, commercial TV station.
For the sake of clarity, I meant "to own" in a current sense. There are other cases where a college or university used to own a network-affiliated, commercial TV station (e.g., Iowa State's former ownership of WOI, and Notre Dame's former ownership of WNDU).
OK, that was a fine rant.
This sort of thing bugs the hell out of me, too.
Mizzou is one of the upper J-schools.
did not know. Still I feel he's being jumpy.
I'm wondering whether the arrogance/supremacy implied in supporting segregation or slave-holding necessarily implies hating. Can one fail to hate a class of persons whom one considers morally inferior to one's own class?

He is from MU and he is a journalism professor. Of course he is retarded. How could he not be?

You know the civil war history of the jayhawkers and Missouri militias. Right?
John-
Yes, state university and journalism. Two strikes against the professor. I'll have to part company with you to the extent that you join Tulpa in describing Columbia as a "backwater" as that statement just does not sit well with my anti-ivy sensitivities.
speaking of shit bag "journalists" who the fuck is that jacktard "ed " interviewing schiff over on dot tv? i couldn't even watch it. does it get any better?
Wrong thinking is punishable. Right thinking will be as quickly rewarded

Tallest midget...
Smartest retard...
Thanks Matt. It's doubtful you can rescue good journalism but occasionally someone needs to try.
Pro Lib, exactly. It's the behaviour of the wrong thinkers that has everyone's attention. It is that same behaviour that will result in a quiet and slow escalation of security forces at govt events. To keep the peace of course.
SIV,
most reasonable troll.

It is sad - journalists are needed, or at least the ideal of a journalist. I just know so few of them out of the tons of people that claim the mantle, it's a case of the majority creating a bad name for the minority.
Sort of like lawyers, though I if one were to look at both professions as practiced and taught today, lawyers at least serve a purpose today. Journalists, not so much.
lawyers aren't needed. They are nothing more than procedural monkeys in today's system. Their only relevance is that you would have to spend a year reading to understand and be able to wiggle your way through all the procedural bullshit the system has thrown up as barriers to justice. Lawyers are just accountants with fancier degree.
Slight digression:
Has their been a literal "lynch mob" actually conducting a lynching in this country since 1946?
"there"
Not to jack the thread but,
if hurricane Bill tracks any farther west, NYC is in for a major godsmack late saturday night.
of biblical proportions.
I think we need a "Hatebeat".
Here's a a href="http://www.columbusdispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/08/13/bridgegap.ART_ART_08-13-09_B4_HHEONOG.html?sid=101">quote...
Seventy percent of arrests in Columbus are of African-American males between 17 and 25 years old, said Wilson, who analyzes trends as part of his job with the Strategic Response Bureau. About half those arrests involve weapons or drugs.
One more try...
SIV, the wiki article on lynching in the U.S. shows isolated incidents in 1981 in Alabama by 2 KKK members and the dragging death in Texas in 1998 as lynchings. I just scanned it for dates. It was a long and brutal(pics included) article. I don't recall a date on a lynch mob carrying out multiple murders.
if hurricane Bill tracks any farther west, NYC is in for a major godsmack late saturday night.
of biblical proportions.
Short the market, then go long right after the devastation for the "broken window fallacy" bounce.
Lawyers are not as useless as journalists. After all, some of us can write.
Gandhi was an attorney ?
brotherben,
I'm referring to the "lynch mob" aspect.I would call anything after the 1946 incident a murder.Emmit Till and James Byrd were not "lynched" in any traditional sense.
We had a CIVIL WAR in this country, where people not only brought their legally licensed firearms to townhalls
There were gun registration laws in the 1860s? That's news to me.
-jcr
Fuck'n A Matt. Fuck'n A.
As a recent KU grad I feel well qualifed to comment on this subject....
....Muck Fizzou
But in all fairness MU does have a very well respected journalism school, for whatever that is worth.
Hate, shuffled off stage in the post-racial haze of the election of the nation's first black president, is back with a vengeance. Hate, if it ever truly threatened to leave the political stage, is most definitely back, larger and nastier than ever.
Yes, and IT'S MOSTLY COMING FROM YOUR SIDE OF THE AISLE, FUCKWIT!
The first gun registration that I know of was NY in 1911(only reason I remember, sure some will get that) for hand guns or small arms.
My ancestors fought in that war. Frankly, it wasn't that civil.
if hurricane Bill tracks any farther west, NYC is in for a major godsmack late saturday night. of biblical proportions.
That is highly unlikely.
I'd just like to ask Prof. Davis when he stopped beating his hate.

It is sad - journalists are needed, or at least the ideal of a journalist
There are decent and reasonably "objective" journalists out there--those who cover a beat (physical or intertubal) and who report reality as they see it--but their personal "reality" is, of course, only a reflection of objective reality. In other words, things happen, but it takes an educated human to filter those events and transcribe them--to the best of their ability--to us simpler humans. What happens along the way is often ugly and biased. This is the "news" we get today (and some would say, the news we deserve). That's why I mentioned Mencken. Was he an omniscient transcriber? No. Did he have his own biases? Certainly. But is there a working journalist today who can hold a candle (or Kindle) to H.L. Mencken? One reads his columns--the last one was written just six decades ago--and wonders: what happened to American journalism?
Hatebeat sounds like a German Industrial S&M traveling pornography troupe.
On reflection wasn't there a law for freed slaves to register weapons?
hmm. Research this will need.
Why can't a hurricane hit DC?
Why can't a hurricane hit DC?
Because huge decomposing piles of shit create a warm high pressure area that drives hurricanes to the east.
A liberal and a conservative are walking down the street. The liberal says, "You know, you conservatives are so closed minded that you would disagree with me if I said the sky was blue."
Tired because it was a quarter past midnight, the conservative replies, "Actually the sky is black at the moment."
"RACIST!!!!"
Everyone has different taste in women.
/*shrugs

That is highly unlikely.
The Epi is right. You see on the map that land mass that juts out from the East coast and catches the storms going Northward? That's us. MidAtlantica, don't thank me, just send down more of your highly prized women for sexual satiation.
hmm,
The Sullivan Act of 1911, by creating concealed weapon licenses, gave the police the ability to go after minorities, particularly Italians, as they could now be denied licenses if they bothered to apply.

"Why can't a hurricane hit DC?"

Yeah, but all those poor, exhausted polar bears in Greenland are shitting their pants.*
*If they have pants, that is. MSNBC is debating it as we speak. Rachel thinks they do.
Speaking of bad journalism, just feel the objectivity streaming out of the Associated Press. It could easily have been written by the White House Press Office.
FACT CHECK: Health overhaul myths taking root
I hope the progressives realize they just called a bunch of elderly, politically active, AARP members, that they are racist for opposing Obama's health care plans.
As Grampa Simpson says: "I'm part of the mob!"
Matt, After some trauma therapy and klonopin, those LAT flashbacks will be under control in no time. Nice rant.
Epi:
I believe hmm was pointing to the colt of the same year.
The Sullivan Act of 1911, by creating concealed weapon licenses, gave the police the ability to go after minorities, particularly Italians, as they could now be denied licenses if they bothered to apply.
Interesting how many of the routine violations of the bill of rights that we put up with today had racist roots.
-jcr
I hope not, because I hate him, and I wouldn't want him to get the wrong idea about why.
I believe hmm was pointing to the colt of the same year.
He was saying he remembered the date of the Sullivan Act because it's the same as a 1911 Colt.
Interesting how many of the routine violations of the bill of rights that we put up with today had racist roots.
Absolutely; that was my point. Do you think white/Irish who applied for weapons permits in 1912 got denied?
JCR: jpfo and C.O.R.E have a video; "no guns for negroes" documenting that.
"To get all journalistically theoretical for a moment, what is the definition of journalism?"
Most of them think it's to "effect social change" rather than simply report what's going on.
Epi: sorry, I missed that.
Sorry, ya I remember the year of the act and subsequently it being in NY because of the Colt 1911. The Sullivan part sounds familiar as well.
I vaguely remember reading about freed blacks having to register weapons as well. I can't recall the book or I would look it up.
Sounds like Charles Davis needs the "hate beat"... in a totally constructive, non-violent way, of course.
On reflection wasn't there a law for freed slaves to register weapons?
Probably, but it was racial profiling. So to correct for it, everyone had to register their weapons. Afterall, why go all the way and turn it into a Constitution thing when we can turn it into a "race thing" and just stop there.
Wow, how amazing that this hate beat shit didn't arise when the left were comparing Bush to Hitler on a regular basis and Keith Olbermann and his colleagues were routinely comparing Bush to Hitler and calling him a fascist. Christ, Howard Dean even stated explicitly that he hated Republicans. But hey, when it is the left that is being "hated" on, watch the fuck out. No fucking expense can be spared to root it out and mock it.
THis guy is a total fucking retard. None of this shit about how fucking awful these protesters are would bother me if it weren't for the fact that the same assholes in the media who are fucking whining the loudest are the same exact ones who for eight years totally ignored the shit hurled at Bush from day fucking one. The guy was never given a chance, ever. And to make matters worse, these assholes are equating the mere act of protesting a minority douchebag with racism.
Jesus, Matt Welch, that was fucking brilliant. BRILLIANT. I want to print it out and keep it. I want to endlessly quote it to people who spout Charles Davis's brand of stupidity. I want to freeze it in the winter and skate on it and then melt it in the spring and re-read it.
"Slight digression:
Has their been a literal "lynch mob" actually conducting a lynching in this country since 1946?"
See Duke University, 2006.
Oops, wrong lynch mob.
A man exercising his legal right to bear arms shows up on the periphery of an Obama event and menaces no one
And he was a black guy.
Tribute to the O.G. Panthers, maybe.
Excellent article. And basically 100% true.
MO is representing today.
What a lovely way to start a marriage.
And to think I'm taxed to pay this jerkwad's salary.
Good one Matt.
Krugman and Herbert have written similar stuff recently in the NYT.
I met my girlfriend's cousin a couple weeks back. Being a journalism major we got to talking about it and he started asking me what newspapers I read. I told him I get the New York Times for free at school and I choke that down every so often.
He proceeded to tell me that it doesn't have a liberal bias. That facts themselves have a liberal bias. I cried myself to sleep that night for fear of the future of my country.
After interning at a newspaper this summer and doing a good amount of reporting in which I had to deal with government offices, I have no idea how anyone could leave thinking the government is some great agent for change.
Government employees:
-Never call you back.
-When they do, talking to them is like trying to have a conversation with a rock.
-Most of the time you're not calling "the right person"
-Most of them only work four days, 6 hours a day (they're answering machines always say they're open from 8-5, just don't try calling at 3)
Report. The. News. Only facts. That's it. Let the people reading make up their own minds EVEN THOUGH THEY MIGHT NOT AGREE WITH YOU. It's their right.
I pine for the days I could drink and smoke a carton of cigarettes in the newsroom while making sexual advances on secretaries. Mostly because I'd actually be able to make a living after school and have some credibility, but also because it would make my college newspaper experience that much better.
I'd talk to anyone when I worked civil service. Although you always have to be aware of the politics even if you are next to impossible to fire. I would even walk you to the right person if I wasn't the person you wanted.
I was despised.
Seventy percent of arrests in Columbus are of African-American males between 17 and 25 years old, said Wilson, who analyzes trends as part of his job with the Strategic Response Bureau. About half those arrests involve weapons or drugs.
So who knew shitting on the Constitution (specifically the 2nd and 4th amendments) resulted in racism? Color me surprised.
hmm, I'm not sure if I understand your anecdote. Are you saying you were despised by your fellow co-workers because you would bring people to them who needed their help? I'm not surprised by that. It's pretty crazy how difficult it is to fire people in private jobs even.
Well, sparky, that song merely reflects what would happen if their boy was sent to a University that doesn't condone thuggery.
MSNBC edited the video of the healthcare protestor with a rifle to disguise the fact that he's black, then seconds later claims that white racists are showing up armed. Stalin would be proud.

Excellent post Matt.
I recently found your blog, its quite interesting read. Thanks sharing the information.
Belated props to Matt Welch.
Stop the hate! Vote Democrat.
Then maybe they'll shut up...
Then maybe they'll shut up...
I have absolutely no doubt, because I heard people saying it, that this sentiment contributed to Democrats filling both the legislative and executive branches, and by extension the judicial branch.
How's that working out for ya'?
I would venture to guess that these "journalists" and the oldstream media are itching for a race war. Their stories are setup the way their hurricane stories are with large anticipation of disaster. I personally wish Obama a headfull of grey hair along with wrinkles for as far as the eye can see when he heads home to the hellhole he came from in Chicago in 2012.
-Most of them only work four days, 6 hours a day (they're answering machines always say they're open from 8-5, just don't try calling at 3)
Shit. Why am i working in the private sector?
Stop the hate! Vote Democrat.

The Dems have the White House and both pieces of Congress, and they're just yammering louder.
Government employees:

We hates it forever!
I'll never forget the naive sophmore in my polysci class. When asked why he wanted to be a journalist, he responded "to change the world".
???
Hey bud, how about simply being a broker of information?
"So am i supposed to war against half white American half African Africans or should i war after African Americans?"
Technically, we're all african-americans, so....
Too bad Prof. "Hate-Beat" wasn't around for the "We Support Our Troops When They Shoot Their Officers hatefests.
One solution, which seems to have eluded the J-faculty at UMC, is to cease the reflexive slander of "racist" towards anyone who disagrees with Pres. Obama. That might cool the temperature some....furious
These "change the world" mofos don't even sincerely want to change the world.
They want to be lauded as world-changing heroes.
There's a difference.
It's the difference between, say, Radley, and Ezra Klein.
This Davis is hilarious, he doesn't even understand it is he who is exhibiting hate, or prejudice at the least. "These people disagree with me, therefore they MUST be bad/racist/selfish/etc" just another example of an extremist saying "the only reason to disagree with the President is racism" god forbid we actually have different beliefs and concerns, or that there are different solutions to the same problem. That's just not possible.
"I love your rants, babe, but an assistant professor at a backwater journalism school writing in the daily paper of Columbia, MO is just about as influential as that guy with the "Death to Obama" sign."
Others have already pointed out the status of the Missouri j-school. But the other factor at work here is that the column in question got big play yesterday from Romenesko (the unadulterated, unashamed leftist who runs the leading trade blog in the journalism biz).
In that sense, it was made influential, relatively speaking.
Maybe the new "Hate Beat" can also cover some of the hate eminating from Daily Kos and the Democratic Underground.
just another example of an extremist saying
"Extremist" is a bad term for that... it implies he has some crooked principles he's holding above the well being of himself and others. What principle is he espousing, black superiority? No, it's just a dishonest ploy to convince people who aren't good at critical thinking that there's an argument supporting his position without having to make it or cite it or support it.
Why can't a hurricane hit DC?
Hurricane Isabel doesn't count?
Damn, man. That's some bodacious ranting!
Romenesko is one of the most influential bloggers in the world of inside-baseball print journalism.
But the biggest news he complied yesterday (from Marketwatch.com) is that the San Francisco Examiner was seriously considering having Hunter S. Thompson cover the O.J. trial.
Christ. THAT would have been epic.
Hmm, see I saw Columbia and thought it was something to do with CJR. Obviously there is already an enthusiastic Hate Beat on every network. Andrea Mitchell is an active member, she declares facts to be lies, much like the observed behavior here. But so what? They should cover anti-Obamism and they SHOULD cover it fairly. They won't of course but they shouldn't be ignoring it or many other things that ARE ignored that does not fit the socialist narative they support. Despite some evidence to the contrary, the American public is not that stupid. The oh-so-late objections to the socialization of this nation demonstrate that. Let them do their little stories and they will find, contrary to their hopes, that there are plenty of bruthas and sistas who know enough to object to socilized medicine and other snake oils. They will find vast tracts of bewildered Democrats who for decades have denied that the actual, hidden aims of their representatives was socialistic. And, once this monstrosity is passed, they will find numberless and unaffiliated victims of our own National Health who are angry and hate and yearn for revenge, political or otherwise.
Of course they should have covered BusHitlerism too. I mean, critically, not enthusiastically as they did. C'est la guerre.
So what if I do hate our communist president and want to call him the n-word? Wake up Professor, your 1984 dreams haven't come true yet. "Free speech absolutist" my ass.
At the risk of being exposed as a brain-dead ditto-head, I actually listened to the Limbaugh rant on Obamaism and National Socialism last week. It was actually in direct response to Pelousy's claim that anti-Obamacare townhall attendees were akin to Nazis, what with all their swastika wearing and all (completely unsubstantiated by any evidence, that claim).
Limbaugh had the audacity (there's that damn word again) to compare the tenets of Germany's national socialist policies--especially with respect to government-run health care and government control over citizen's bodies (anti-smoking, pro-exercise, etc.) with Obama's. He then not so rhetorically asked whose beliefs were closer to Nazi, the Dems and Obama or the liberty-loving, anti-government townhallers? Naturally, none of the media actually bothered to mention that Limbaugh's rant was in RESPONSE to Pelosi's idiotic claims. Limbaugh was careful to state that in no way was he calling Obama or the Dems Nazis, but asked the listener to decide whose political ideology was actually more Nazi-like.
Another stellar job of mis-representation, mis-reporting by the media. All in a day's work.
Why don't we know the name of the guy who was holding that sign threatening the Obamas and their kids, 7 days later?
"How's that working out for ya?" - Anonymous
Not as well as one might have naively hoped. It turns out that once in power, the Democrats ratchet the hate even more.
Obama should not get a free pass just because he's half white.
There is only one word to describe people like Charles Davis: fetus.
Tulpa, you should do your research. The MU J-School is internationally renowned for training the world's leading journalists. It is not some "backwater" institution. I completely disagree with Dr. Davis as well, but that was/is a blatantly ignorant statement you made. Do your research.
The MU J-School is internationally renowned for training the world's leading journalists.
See, it has the same problem as government: they should be journaling not "leading".
Take a look at the mutt's picture.
Why do these guys all look alike? Do they crank 'em out of some metrosexual factory?
brotherben,
When I say never, I mean when you call at 10 you can sit around until 6 waiting for a call back and not get it. Usually they'll call back three days later way after your deadline.
joshua corning,
I welcome your challenge with old Soviet assault rifles I bought off the IRA and hand-made grenades I made with Jameson.
I like how when Beck says "The President hates white people" that is HATE, but when Prof. Davis or countless others say "White people hate the President" that is ANTI-HATE. Hmmmmmmm.
Kim, I already acknowledged my mistake. And now I'll admit that (a) neither my line of work nor personal interests involve the reputations of journalism schools, and (b) I don't thoroughly research every aspect of every offhand comment I make in the freaking comments section of a blog, and don't plan to do so in the future. In summary, caveat lector.
>>"Fox News alarmist Glenn Beck, ridiculously, claims that Obama has "a deep-seated hatred of white people," "
If a white politician spent twenty years being friends with David Duke, would anyone question whether the "racist" tag might fairly be applied to him?
But Obama spends twenty years being friends with people like Wright, and it's unhinged to call him racist. Funny how that works. Funny how that works even at places like "Reason".
Welch ignores an even larger problem with the lefty journos position. They ignored or even encouraged much worse behavior from the left fot the past eight years. Somehow we never got to see reporters tut-tutting with disapproval as some lunatic burned George W Bush in effigy. But suddenly these same people see it as their solemn duty to police what the poplace may say, now that their fellow Democrats are in power?
>>"Why don't we know the name of the guy who was holding that sign threatening the Obamas and their kids, 7 days later?"
Most likely, because the guy was a plant. If he had ties to the GOP that information would have come out five minutes later.
I tend to think, though, that "than ever" is being used by the fellow idiomatically and not literally, and is meant to be comparative to recent times
If the media were to compare what it happening today to recent times, viz. the years 2000- 2008, their case stills falls apart.
"Than ever" must mean "since Jan 20th 2009".
Of course since plenty of the Reason crowd went along with the whole Bush=Hitler crapola, this may be an argument they don't want to touch.
But the other factor at work here is that the column in question got big play yesterday from Romenesko (the unadulterated, unashamed leftist who runs the leading trade blog in the journalism biz).
I don't know what Romenesko is supposed to be ashamed about, being as he is one of the world's greatest and earliest bloggers (though he rejects the term), but I do know that he linked this here blog post today, and in general has more politically wide-ranging tastes than 98% of bloggers.
Of course since plenty of the Reason crowd went along with the whole Bush=Hitler crapola, this may be an argument they don't want to touch.
Of course, like most deployments of the phrase "of course," what follows from it is not, of course, a rock-solid fact, but, in fact, incorrect. Bush hatred? Yes, that happened here. Bush=Hitler? Search bar is in the upper right hand corner. Knock yourself out.
The comments on that article are precious gold. A JProf thinks he's going to preach to the choir and ends up getting schooled.
So you're some rookie journo on the hate beat.
And you can't find any....
Now what?
Assistant Prof. Davis seems to have selected a particular source of "hate" that he thinks is important to report.
I wonder just how he would react to reports of "hate" from other sources, like Rev. Wright's church, La Raza, union conventions, Progressive blogs, the Democratic Caucus or MSNBC ?
Journalism is dead. There are no good journalism schools because we don't see any good journalists coming out of them. If these journalists analyze hate and report on it, it will only be what they recognize as hate and that will be anyone or thing that they don't agree with.
"Seventy percent of arrests in Columbus are of African-American males between 17 and 25 years old, said Wilson, who analyzes trends as part of his job with the Strategic Response Bureau. About half those arrests involve weapons or drugs.
So who knew shitting on the Constitution (specifically the 2nd and 4th amendments) resulted in racism? Color me surprised."
Uh, how in the fuck is arresting someone who used a weapon in the commission of a crime or illegally possessed a weapon shitting over the Second Amendment?
Someone, I don't know who, wrote:
"Of course since plenty of the Reason crowd went along with the whole Bush=Hitler crapola, this may be an argument they don't want to touch."
Matt Welch responded:

Mr. Welch, when he uses the term "Reason crowd" I don't think he meant the editors or authors on the site, rather I think he meant the commenters, and I think it is safe to say, without having to search through tens of thousands of comments from 2001-2009, that there were probably more than a few comparisons of Bush to Hitler, just like there are always quite a few comments on this site wishing death upon the police or cheering the death of a police officer every time a corrupt or inept police department fucks up.
And given your use of the phrase "of course" and the following explanation concerning the use of the term, are you in fact admitting that those at Reason did regurarly use the Bush=Hitler comparisons?
Awesome post! Keep up the great work!

Charles Davis is clearly a psychopath.
Um, ever hear of Godwin's Law? Now, what percentage of H&R commenters do you think are familiar with it? Here's a quarter, buy yourself a clue.
The level of hate from the left during the Bush years was staggering. But, of course, there was no hand wringing and bed wetting from the liberal media hacks during that time. Hypocrisy reins supreme with liberals.
There is a hate beat already. It's called the New York Times and its flock of sheep in the mainstream media that trumpets the never-ending succession of alarms from the Southern Poverty Leadership Council about the supposed growth of hate groups and militias. The SPLC absolutely depends on dupes like Davis, who somehow did not wring his hands over the "Kill Bush" and "Death to Cheney" placards that were routine in antiwar protests. And despite what he says, the First Amendment always gets imperiled when a trumped-up definition of "hate" arises.
Great piece, Matt. Just blogged it. I'm so tired of how people like to paint everything as racism, at every turn. Last month, a bunch of guys were shouting by their car in our residential neighborhood -- at 2 a.m. on a weeknight.
I came outside to ask them to be quiet, and when they started arguing with me instead of apologizing and quieting down, I told them they were "badly raised."
The guy asked me: "Are you saying that because we're Asian."
My response: "No, I'm saying that because you're loud, inconsiderate assholes!"
Perhaps journalism professors are just sheltered from attacks by moronic literalists.
Perhaps, when someone uses the word "ever," in the phrase "nastier than ever" that person isn't LITERALLY referring to the entirety of human history, from Obama, through Nazi Germany, and back to Cain and Abel. Perhaps the writer meant, in the context of the paragraph talking about "post racial haze" and the recent election, recent history. Maybe he thought that was implied. Maybe he should have substituted the word "before" for the word "ever."
He is guilty, then, of inaccuracy, but a forgivable inaccuracy, because he probably figured there was NO person on the entire planet that was stupid or dishonest enough to claim he meant to reference the entirety of human history, and write an entire article based on reading a simple statement through the lens of boneheaded literalism.
Heh. Evilmonger Bush is out of office and people decide now's the time crack down on hate speech.
They had no problem with it when there were mobs in the streets carrying posters demanding Bush be murdered.
Hypocrisy much?
Perhaps journalism professors are just sheltered from attacks by moronic literalists.
Yeah, I can understand how the teaching of journalism shields one from the idea that words ought to be literally true. Wait, what?
So, in libertarian theory, can private businesses serve, and decline to serve, whom they want? Can I rent to, and choose not to rent to, my choice of tenants?
I don't mean to offend anyone, but I probably will. See, when I was in college Journalism majors were so stupid that even the football team made fun of them. They haven't gotten any smarter since. This guy is a professor of JOURNALISM, which means he makes a living by taking smart kids and 'tarding them down until all they know is to smile pretty and look into the camera with the red light on. He ain't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Some 25 years ago I did a short purgatorial stint for a Mass. state agency involving international trade.
'Guy calls one day, asks about exporting tuna to Korea. I told him I'd find the answer and get back, etc.
I immediately found the EXACT PERSON working down at the docks who handled state and federal regs on that. Knew the topic inside and out, told me he had forms, info and plenty of practical advice to help local fisherman to get their big fish into Asia.
So I called the guy back within ten minutes, and passed on the name and number.
The guy at other end nearly fainted, saying for all to hear: "I called the state ---and they actually called me back!"
(In the same office I worked in sat Gov. Dukakis's limo driver, who spent the day working on the Duke's schedule logistics. He didn't know squat about international trade.
Ditto the woman sitting next to him, Kitty Dukakis's personal secretary, also plopped into our office to find a way for the taxpayer to pick up the tab for her services. I dunno whether her job description included buying Kitty's pills and daily pint of Jack Daniels.)
Mitchell Young, yes.
Discrimination, in the non-political sense of the term, includes such things as price level, "no shirt, no shoes, no service", and who to make franchise contracts with. Potential customers may choose not to patronize a business for any reason, including price, dress code, or a "coloreds only" policy.
In some conditions, the business may not survive with one of those policies; in others, they may thrive in a niche. It isn't my responsibility nor is it my elected representatives' to interfere, unless we are willing to suffer the consequences (eg, being shot) for the abridgement of property rights or speech, which is always an option if you think that's the right thing to do.

My response would be to suggest reading this:
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/enough-slamming-the-lapd-over-racial-profiling
"Among the flaws in Ayres's study is its reliance on the premise that there is some mathematically correct ratio of persons stopped by police to a given ethnic group's share of the criminal pool and overall population. If Group A is committing X percent of a city's crime, then Group A should represent X percent of the city's vehicle and pedestrian stops. But this ignores the reality of police work. To paraphrase the late Daniel Seligman, if it were known that in a Las Vegas casino a certain slot machine paid 10 percent more than any of the others, that machine surely would see more than a 10 percent increase in play.
And so it is in police work."
I am REALLY disappointed by this article (the one I'm commenting on not the one it's commenting on). Two points.
1)This is an OP-ED piece. Just because it was written by a journalism professor does not mean it has to be journalism. A journalist is allowed to have opinions too.
2)I really feel both Matt Welch and the commenters (tors?) are failing pretty hard here. Someone (and someone on the "left" no less judging from whom he chose to single out as hatemongers) is suggesting that we leave something in the hands of the public. He's not pushing for hate speech legislation. He's suggesting things be publicly reported upon that would then be subject to market and societal pressures if people felt the comments were inappropriate. This is wonderful! Sure it'll be partisan but that's even more awesome in that it will help to show if papers are bring partisan by who is being singled out and who is being ignored and perhaps then increase societal and advertising pressure on the papers to be more balanced! It's also a great way to keep things open for discussion as to what is really hateful. Killing the presidents family is an example that is obviously so, suggesting that the tree of liberty be watered is DRASTIC but not really hateful, that kind of thing.
He's literally providing a voluntaryist solution to a problem he perceives instead of pushing for government intervention for something he doesn't like. We should be CELEBRATING this!!!
This is even more true, if such a thing is mathematically possible, for those who deliver lectures on all that should be true and good about journalism.
