When Altruism Isn't Enough: The Case for Compensating Kidney Donors

Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Wohlstetter Conference Center, Twelfth Floor, AEI

1150 Seventeenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036

The national organ shortage was in the spotlight recently thanks to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, whose liver transplant made headlines. His story highlights the inevitable problems of fairness and scarcity endemic to the U.S. transplant establishment. Not only do thousands die each year waiting on an organ that never arrives, but a global black market has blossomed to supply organs to desperate patients.

At this event, Sally Satel, M.D., will discuss her new book, When Altruism Isn't Enough: The Case for Compensating Kidney Donors (AEI Press, 2009). She will be joined by Daniel Asa Rose, who travelled to China with his cousin to procure a kidney and wrote about it in the new book Larry's Kidney. Nick Gillespie, editor in chief of Reason.com and Reason.tv, will moderate a discussion between Rose and Satel about their personal experiences with the organ transplant system in the United States and abroad, defects in the current system, and policy remedies.
