Reason's Terry Colon Wins for Best Editorial Illustration in the Western Publications Association's "Maggie" Awards
The Western Publications Association, encompassing magazines from roughly the Rockies on westward, has awarded Reason first place for "Best Single Editorial Illustration" in 2008. The winning piece was Terry Colon's brilliant What Part of Legal Immigration Don't You Understand?, based on a bureaucratic hellbroth of information painstakingly compiled by Shikha Dalmia and Mike Flynn.
Reason was also a Maggie finalist in three other categories–magazine, news article, and web article.

You give me your content for free plus extra. Try to be more convincing. But oh! It’s a donation! Well why didn’t you say so!
Maybe the failing newspapers need donations too. I’m too busy to donate, I have the internet.
Any honors bestowing institution for print media, that doesn’t acknowledge Radley Balko as histories greatest investigative journalist, is is completely lacking in credibility.
Warren — Radley was a finalist for Best News Article!
Stiff sentence upheld for medical pot supplier
Advocates for the first California medical marijuana supplier convicted of federal drug charges said today they would seek a rehearing after a federal appeals court upheld his 10-year prison sentence.
Brian Epis of Chico was convicted by a Sacramento federal jury in 2002 of conspiring to grow more than 1,000 marijuana plants. Butte County officers seized 458 plants from the basement of his home in June 1997 and found records that more plants had been grown there.
Epis, who had a doctor’s recommendation to use marijuana for chronic back and neck pain, said he was growing the plants for himself and four other patients who shared the expenses. He said he planned to sell a few of the plants, at cost, to the cooperative he ran out of his home. But prosecutors said Epis was planning to make millions of dollars.

I wonder if it’s just a coincidence that the winning illustration was one that took a position on which libertarians and progressives are most closely aligned?
The Western Publications Association, encompassing magazines from roughly the Rockies on westward…
Is it along the lines of where Best Foods is sold, instead of Hellmann’s? Or, might it be closer to the Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s delineation? How about Schilling (in the West) vs. McCormick (in the East)? Or, perhaps Dreyer’s vs. Edy’s?
“How about Schilling (in the West) vs. McCormick (in the East)?”
Here in fly over country, we get both.
suck.com was hilarious. Whatever happened to that?
Exactly Zeb. I’ve been asking that question for a few years now. I found myself here looking for Terry Colon stuff, not to get into a political debate.
Terry actually let me interview him for my blog a while back, which was awesome. He’s a super funny guy. I stopped by this page to see what this illustration award was all about. It’s definitely a great illustration. But the debate in these comments is a little more than I expected.
If you’re interested, Terry’s own site TerryColon.com is very Suck.com-like actually. It’s like Suck meets Mr Wizard’s World, if that makes sense. I love it.
Well, to be fair, Jack, 458 plants is a shitload of plants for five medical marijuana patients. At a very conservative 6 oz of dried bud per plant, assuming that only half are female, that works out to 86 pounds of pot.
Standard disclaimer: no one should do time at all, etc.
“But prosecutors said Epis was planning to make millions of dollars.”
And as we all know, it’s immoral to make money off of medicines.
Here in fly over country, we get both.
So, McCormick & Company is essentially competing against itself where you live?
(I think that, at least in the Upper Midwest, the Mississippi may be the dividing line between the two brands. But, I’ve never been able to confirm that.)
Woohoo! Keep a close watch out for that champagne I’m sending! Woo! Hoo! Sis Boom Bah!
Meanwhile, is it any wonder that an MSM group would give a prize to an illustration that misleads about this issue? Is it any surprise that such a group would have no clue about the fact that any such program would involve cutting into line?
Maybe I could do an illustration of the fact that any legalization program would either a) take 5 to 10 years to process applicants at with FBI background checks, or b) would involve slapdash background checks or none at all. If it’s the former, we’ll have millions of new IllegalAliens here by the time we’ve legalized the current ones. If it’s the latter, thousands of criminals and no doubt hundreds of terrorists or their sympathizers would be legalized.
I’ll be rushing to illustrate that in hopes of getting a “Maggie”.
Woohoo.
Mr. OLS has misplaced his manners, so let me speak for him:
Congratulations, ReasonMagazine and TerryColon on your WinningCover!
In other notes, I believe wikipedia has a nice section on the Reason Mag article on “the Suckification of Reason.”

I believe Tuscon, Arizona has the only known confluence of In ‘N’ Out and Waffle House….
Orange Line Special,
Surely you realize that under a safe and sane immigration system the government need not — nay, should not — grant permanent residence to everyone who wanted to enter, reside in, or work in the US. What is wrong with granting them “residence”? Reserve “permanent residence” for those who have shown a commitment worthy of being placed on a long-term path to citizenship.
The difference between “illegal resident” and “permanent resident” is huge. But the first step is simply “legal resident”, and virtually all the illegal immigrants would find that immediately preferable. After all, if you can’t be deported except for cause, who’s to care whether you are a permanent resident or not?
MikeP,
You’re wasting perfectly good ASCII values arguing with OLS. Now those bits are gone forever. Or, were you trying to provoke apoplexy? In which case, good luck.
Usually, he is dismissed with a four-letter abbreviation, but I am reluctant to spoil the festive mood.
On another other note: I’ve heard El Paso, TX, is the sole Hellman’s / Best Foods intersection.
Congrats reason. It’s nice to see you’re appreciated out of our all too small circle of true believers.
I, OTOH, don’t mind being the skunk at a garden party.
Shut the Fuck up, Lonewacko.
Congrats Reason :^)
In response to MikeP’s idiocy, how could a small country control a larger country? One way of many would be to embed aboveground or underground supporters. Things like that might not even happen intentionally: a small country might find themselves in the lucky position of having sympathizers in important positions or in a great enough number.
That’s just one of the grown-up lessons we learn from history. And, that’s one of the things we have to watch out for. A certain foreign country already has a good amount of power inside the U.S. because they have millions of their people here and sympathizers in important positions. Any increased number of people from that country would give them even more power and take even more power from U.S. citizens.
There’s much more, but MikeP is living in such a fantasy world that it’s pretty useless to discuss this with him.
For you lurkers: don’t trust libertarians. None of them can figure out all the impacts of their delusion-based ideology.
I wonder if it’s just a coincidence that the winning illustration was one that took a position on which libertarians and progressives are most closely aligned?
No need to wonder. Have you ever seen Reason win an award from anything but left-leaning organizations?
A certain foreign country already has a good amount of power inside the U.S. because they have millions of their people here and sympathizers in important positions.
What foreign country is this? How does it exercise this power? And just how much power are we talking about?
Does this country, for instance, have enough power to force the US to abide by a fifteen-year-old treaty that allows truck drivers from this country to drive in the US?
If this country ever acquires enough power to make the US follow its own treaties, you let me know.
Congratulations on the first place finish! That illustration wasn’t worth 1,000 words, it was worth about 10,000!
Did you also win this one for the Stossel illustration about how to fire a teacher? That was also a classic. As all of the major news magazines reduce content, cut frequency of publication or just plain go out of business like Portfolio, it’s great to see that Reason is still delivering the goods and being recognized for it.
