President Barack Hussein Obama II
It's going to be called as soon as the West Coast comes in at 11 p.m. ET. I've been too busy interviewing Barr people at his election party to check the House races lately, but so far Murtha is winning, and a lot of the close races are breaking their way.

Oh, let me taste your tears, Republicans! Mmmmmmm, your tears are so yummy and sweet!
Well, I got the two things I wanted. Barr got third and this wasn't and epic landslide for Obama.
Just hold on a second. No way California is called right at 11pm. May I remind you AMBASSADOR Keyes is on the California ballot? I see this whole thing getting thrown to the House.
Murtha, winning? Blah. I hoped my native state would be smarter than that.
Uh, John...Unfortunately, it looks like Barr is going to be fourth.
I hope North Carolina holds for McCain.
It should, there are more real Americans there than the People's Democratic Republic Commonwealth of Old Dominion.
John,
Barr got 3rd? How do you figure? Last I saw, he is still behind Nader.
Where can I find results beyond Rep/Dem? Not surprisingly I can't find them on any of the majors.
sigh. oh well. not like mccain would have ushered in some golden age, but i definitely would've preferred his administration* to what we can likely expect from obama. there is at least some succor in the satisfaction this will give to my neighbors (i live in a small southern town in a neighborhood of mostly elderly blacks).
*it sounded so great in a handmaid's tale!!!
...and John, when the California vote and the electoral numbers are added up, this will be the biggest first time win for president since Reagan in '80.
We still don't know if it's going to be a landslide or not, John.
It looks like a mere map-altering wipeout, but landslide is still possible.
I was looking at uselectionatlas.org, their numbers are a little behind. Whoops.
I was just wondering when the locals would start acting up, when from outside I heard a lusty
"BARACK OBAMA, BITCH!!"
So I got that to look forward to all night.
<sarcasm>Okay Republicans, how long until President Hussein declares sharia law? Given all the power that W bequeathed to the chief executive, it shouldn't take long. Six months? A year? Two weeks?</sarcasm>
So far he's got 51% of the popular vote. Not really a mandate is it?
From the newsroom where I work: Multiple jumpings up and down and a couple high fives. Shocking.
I, for one, welcome our new socialist overlord, and wish him a happy 2-year reign.
It is astonishing...the first ever Black House.
Doug,
Maybe after the Bradley effect happens? Or maybe after all the Republican Diebolt fraudulant votes are counted...
More benefits - two out of two black pundits so far (Juan Williams and Eugene Robinson) have broken down on air. Is the racial angle any different for anyone else now that it's official?
So far he's got 51% of the popular vote. Not really a mandate is it?
Bush called it one in 2004.
Who's been to an election rally for sincere reasons? Who's held up one of those flappy signs and yelled? And why did you do all that?
Quoting Snake Pliskin, "The president of what?"
Vexilla regis prodeunt inferni verso di noi.
Haha, Rachel Maddow also teared up. What a weirdo.
One possible, tiny bright spot for Barr: With 93% of the precincts reporting in Indiana, Obama is ahead of McCain by 0.3%; Barr has 1.1%. So most likely, Barr caused Indiana to go from McCain to Barr. Not that it means much, given the Electoral College vote thumping McCain is receiving.
Consummatum est.
Just remember, Weigel, the upcoming deluge of gov't spending (oh, how you will laugh at the memory of calling the GOP spendthrift), government regulation, earmarks, restrictions on free speech, protectionism, and higher taxes are all your fault.
Okay Republicans, how long until President Hussein declares sharia law? Given all the power that W bequeathed to the chief executive, it shouldn't take long. Six months? A year? Two weeks?
Inshallah.
For anyone who's up for some lulz, http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index>here are the freepers' reactions.
I didn't vote for Obama, but at least his win is pissing off all the right people.
Who's been to an election rally for sincere reasons? Who's held up one of those flappy signs and yelled? And why did you do all that?
Also curious if you attend sporting events and make noise.
So far he's got 51% of the popular vote. Not really a mandate is it?
What ever helps you sleep at night...LOL
If Obama turns out to be half the socialist they say he is I'll be shocked.
Bush called it one in 2004.
Bush is an idiot and a thug. So what. It's still not much of a mandate.
Let me try that again.
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index
so who actually had the courage to vote Lib or at least third party? I just can't see how people are excited about this (or a major party candidate) at all.
Pac, I agree, and I prefer him to McCain. For whatever that's worth.
Asharak,
Please fix your tags.
It took us all of 10 minutes to get to the finger pointing stage.
I voted for Barr, but now i wish i had just written RP and stayed true...LOL
Any word on the House and Senate?
I'm hoping that Democrats don't make too large gains.
Or maybe not. Perhaps the best possible thing would be to allow the Democrats to go crazy and thus majorly fuck up as quickly as possible.
Well, he was the smarter of the two, and this makes me think that Americans are getting smarter, and maybe the next step is someone like a LP candidate.
You have to admit the man is intelligent. Intelligence makes people better; experience makes them bitter.
She just voted for Bob Barr
2012 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really, how long will it be before scholars even begin to quantify the depths of George W.'s incompetence, his perfect ability to completely annihilate anything he touches?
I voted for Barr, but I got to admit I am a little teary eyed feeling with relief that I will never have to try to explain to my future kids why there have never been any black presidents.
Barr
Some of the assclowns are booing when McCain mentions Obama's name.
This is awesome. Obama is president, and now I dont have to worry about paying my mortgage anymore!
If the Republicans don't get their act together, the democratic majority will just grow and grow no matter how lefty they get.
Is Barr helping Obama in North Carolina, or defeating him?
Obama will not cross the 379 or 370 that Bill Clinton got in 1992 and 1996. And he won't get the popular vote percentage margin either, that's why I'm not calling this a landslide.
If the Republicans don't get their act together, the democratic majority will just grow and grow no matter how lefty they get.
Isn't that what the Republicans said from c. 2000-2006.
Americans need to be worried. Once obama expand welfare to 30 to 40% of the population, just forget about winning an election again wihtou promising to maintain welfare or expand welfare. The peronist party have been playing that card and no one can beat them. The only way that an oposition party can win (and they have) is to have peronist policy but with other names.
Except the opposite.
We are ALL Frank Marshall Davis's buttboys now.
Obama is president, and now I dont have to worry about paying my mortgage anymore!
You got that right.
This is all I gotta say for the rest of the night:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTIklFsMjjU
Anthony D, wasn't that McCain's plan?
Huzzah! Free gas and mortgages for all!
White House Obama rally features gigantic Soviet flag!
IT WILL BE LIKE RED DAWN!!!
BDB - now why couldn't Fred Williamson have been our first black president? now THAT would be shit to be proud of...

so who actually had the courage to vote Lib or at least third party? I just can't see how people are excited about this (or a major party candidate) at all.
I voted third party, but I like said, it's fun to watch how much this is infuriating the people like the freepers.
Besides, an Obama administration may actually force the GOP to realize where they went wrong (even though I doubt it).
On the one hand, I'm glad that Sully won't be taking Weigel and others hostage and forcing them to perform unspeakable acts.
On the other hand, I suggest keeping a list of all the things BHO does and never letting any public figure who helped - including major bloggers - forget it. And, that includes both those who supported him and those who did little or nothing.
Every time they state an opinion and there's an opening, let anyone know what they played a part in.
I want to see some of these people working at McDonald's so I can go in and leave them a penny tip.

So far he's got 51% of the popular vote. Not really a mandate is it?
Four of his best states, California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii, were just called and have barely been called. He'll wind up well over 51%.
"BDB - now why couldn't Fred Williamson have been our first black president? now THAT would be shit to be proud of..."
QFMFT. Osama wouldn't try any shit, then!
ROFL@OLS.
Seriously now, how does one go about becoming a parasite on the productive class? I don't want to go to work tomorrow. Is there a form I have to fill out, or can community organizers do that for me?
BDB, I'll see your youtube clip, and raise you This one as it's been in my head ever since they called Virginia
My friends took their kids to the polls. They took pictures of their kids next to the ballots filled in for Obama.
Is there a form I have to fill out, or can community organizers do that for me?
Community orginizers only fill out your vote for you (for themselves). In order to become a professional parasite, you'll be facing a near-full time job filling out forms.
Welcome to paradise.
So does anyone feel hope? Besides maybe Weigel.
Because you have to figure, the odds of the Republican party getting its shit together on economic issues is near-zero at this point. And the odds of a third party win are even lower than that.
IN and NC will go for Obama.
Barack Obama isn't even black.
Glad to see Mary Landrieu get re-elected. I was surprised it was so close.
"The Myth of the Rational Voter" seems like a good explanation as to why Obama won this election...not that McCain supporters are any more rational.
We will find out fairly quickly if the GOP learned any lessons when they elect the next batch of party leaders in Congress. My guess is they will not have learned anything.
According to C-SPAN right now, Bob Barr's @ 362,000 votes. I'd say that, given that a lot of the country isn't counted yet, he's definitely on track to do very well for an LP candidate.
Coleman-Frankin is gonna go all night, if not into the next couple days.
Hmmm..will the Republican Party get its act together...hmmm, well, they gave the mention of Sarah Palin (who was looking hot once again, I might add), during McCain's concession the biggest applause of his speech.
So I'm gonna have to say...no, no they really are not going to get their act together.

Seriously now, how does one go about becoming a parasite on the productive class? I don't want to go to work tomorrow. Is there a form I have to fill out, or can community organizers do that for me?
It's quite simple. Just become a CEO of a bank that tanks and ask the government for billions of dollars in bailouts (derived from tax money that's forcibly taken from the productive class).
I guess you weren't expecting that kind of answer, were you?
John - I see that. Looks like Coleman's breaking away, however.
Ah . . . steak with a bottle of Gruner Veltliner AND I get proven right on the election? Good times . . . good times . . . time to do a little buzzed driving. Wish me luck everyone!
Anthony, the question isn't whether the Republicans will get their act together. It's whether Obama will fuck up so badly that the Republicans can win in spite of themselves.
Here are a few more videos for the people!
time to do a little buzzed driving. Wish me luck everyone!
vroom VROOM!!!!
"The Myth of the Rational Voter" seems like a good explanation as to why Obama won this election...not that McCain supporters are any more rational.
It looks more to me like Obama had at least a semi-coherent story line in a race where McCain couldn't manage to do the same, even long enough to get in the White House. I mean once you're in, you can self destruct and flip-flop however you want. Look, see, Bush got away with it.
McCain shot himself out of this race, the day he backed Bailout.
So we had a choice between a socialist and a lune who'd probably be worse than Bush was.
Counting down (10, 9, 8, 7,....) until some fool idiot tells me that I got what I deserved, because I didn't vote this time around.
What John said.
Who's the socialist and who's the loon?
Don't know if this has been linked yet on this thread but for those interested in the results passed Obama and McCain here it is. Barr is pretty far behind Nader now, I think he will pass Badnarik but not by much.
err meant past* not passed.
I don't have a good feeling about this whole "outdoor speech" thing.
Ammonium -- crud. Sorry, I forgot what McCain's been up to the last few weeks here. I stopped paying attention a while back.
Well you can just take your pick, however it floats your boat.
Barr is only about 10,000 votes off of Badnarik's mark from 2004. I hope he breaks 400k.
I voted Barr. I still prefer Obama over McCain.
I hope he breaks 400k.
Yeah man. That would change everything.
The conspiracy to make Michelle Obama look insane has already begun. PBS and MSNBC both carried video of her in a sensible black dress where someone had photoshopped ugly red blobs on top of her. At least that's what I hope happened.
Ebeneezer Scrooge,
It won't change much certainly.
Sorry. I'm not in a good mood about this whole thing.
I think the 2010 primaries is when the last of the neocons/fiscal whores will finally get their clocks cleaned.
Fuck every single Republican that has ever mouthed a word of small government rhetoric while voting for GOP cronies. That's all.
It won't be so bad, it is just going to be like Reconstruction.
For anyone interested in the 2004 election results for third party vs 2008 go here for 2004 and here for 2008.
On a side note I added up all of the third party candidates from 2004 and came up with 1,126,404 total votes. (By all I mean Nader, Libertarian, Constitution, and Green Parties) We will see what this year has in store.
What is most frightening is the democratic party's congress majority in both houses. It all has the makings of "New Deal 08"
Once Barr passes Badnarik's 2004 total, which should happen any minute, the LP will be able to begin its pogrom to destroy the purist wing of the party.
I said "change", not "different", chumps.
"I hope he breaks 400k."
"Yeah man. That would change everything."
Fuggin Hilarious
the LP will be able to begin its pogrom to destroy the purist wing of the party.
Please! Did the "pragmatists" pick up their toys and start the Boston Tea Party?
gah, "purists" are bunch of babies.
Barr has passed Badnarik.
I'm okay with the result tonight. I voted for Barr as a protest (I live in CA so my vote is utterly meaningless anyway). Complete Democratic control of the executive and legislative branches is a little scary. But the GOP deserved to get its ass handed to it.
Obama may take us down the road to european socialism, but let's face it...that's where it's always been going anyway. At least the rest of the world might hate us slightly less. It will make my vacations more pleasant.
Barr has passed Badnarik.
Tallest Midget!
Angry Optimist,
No, I was just being facetious. I'm no purist.
Barr over 400k.
AnthonyD - Sorry, man! 😀 I'm sensitive to the purist carping.
So has Ron Paul done better to secure a win for Obama in Montana than Bob Barr did for him in North Carolina?
Quite.
Wasn't this supposed to be "record turnout year"? Why does it look like we won't have much more than 100 million votes for this election? (which, IIRC, was about the total for 2004)?
TAO it is looking like this election will be just about spot on to the 2004 election for 3rd parties. Refer to my previous post I linked the 2004 results and th 2008 results. Also I added up the ones from 2004.
There must be upwards of a hundred people at Barr's party. I hope there's tight security and enough beer and wine for everybody.
TAO,
No problem. I got the same issue with the same people. 😀
So we had a choice between a socialist and a lune who'd probably be worse than Bush was.
My thoughts exactly.
Which is worse, an incompetent ally, or a competent enemy?
At least on all non-economic related issues Obama will govern like a sane competent individual.
On the other hand, sane, competent, Obama will likely do wonders ofr a lasting Democratic majority. So perhaps I should be depressed.
At least Al Franken is losing.
McCain is only beating Obama 61%-35% in Utah. That might be the republicans worst showing ever in that state. Whats this world coming to if a Muslim/liberal/minority can get 35% of the vote in Utah?
Where's Mr. Nice Guy?
I want to hear more about why Americans won't vote for a half-black guy with a funny name.
What were the Democrats thinking?
Worst Republican showing in Utah ever? No, LBJ won the state in 1964 and Utah went for Democrats a lot before the 1950s.
"so who actually had the courage to vote Lib or at least third party?"
voting for Barr was/is an act of cowardice...the purity of our belief is what legitimizes Libertarians
I voted for Barr. I'm not a coward, so fuck off.
Ditto that. That's the kind of absurd position that will keep us in this mess of a system forever.
And Franken is tied now. *shudder*
Um. The Democrats were a *very* different party then.
All I can say is thank God the threat of a McCain presidency has been ended for good.
It begins. Barack Obama becomes the first African-American to become the US President in 200 years. This is historic, granted, and is something I thought I would never see in my lifetime. Congratulations, Mr. President-Elect Obama.
I live in a sea of Democrats, leftists, and old-school Marxists. My beliefs are misunderstood, as I am sure many libertarians may agree with me, the left does not "get" us. As I write this, I have heard some cheering in downtown Minneapolis, as I am sure the parties are just starting. I suppose after waiting eight years to regain power, and in light of the recent economic downturn, they have a reason to celebrate. All hail the new leader. Welcome to socialism.
My beliefs are shaken. Can someone please make a cogent argument for libertarianism? I need ammunition to deal with the sometimes sneering, self-righteous attitudes of my predominately leftist co-workers and acquaintances who, no doubt, will be quick to point out how "capitalism has failed."
Please, someone give me something.
Is this the beginning of the end for free-markets and free-minds? Are we destined for universal healthcare, expansive government and other schemes? Are we going to become a European style socialist state? I need answers, but I fear I will find none.
Where do we go from here? I am almost tempted to resign myself from discussing politics at all, anymore, as the last few years have been difficult. I have grown so tired of making my arguments I do not know if I can keep it up. I think I feel defeated.
Hayek, where are you?
Goodnight and good-luck.
Good grief, I just checked out The Corner for the first time in years (I used to be a regular reader).
Good grief, Derb. You're one of the more reasonable ones around there.
Please, someone give me something.
It's not the end of free markets. People who say free markets or capitalism doesn't work really don't know what they're talking about - the question really is, will there be more regulation. Ask your colleagues whether they want to choose the search engine they want to use? Should the government, say, favor ask.com over Google? Do they want to be forced to buy a GM over a BMW or Toyota? (not that there's anything wrong with anything) Ask them everything they buy - ipod vs. zune, where they shop, where they live - do they want the government to choose for them? If American car companies are so important to save, how many of them actually buy American cars? Obama isn't socialist - favoring unions is a liberal philosophy, not socialist. I frankly don't understand what all this fear about socialism is.
African-Americans now have no more excuses. Don't blame the schools for your own failures. Don't blame society for holding you back. A black person just proved that if you have the talent, skill, and work-ethic, you can achieve whatever you want.
Obama isn't socialist - favoring unions is a liberal philosophy, not socialist.
Uh, um, er, wait now, just hold on thar.
Remind me who it was that came up with the idea of labor unions, as we have them today? And do you know anything about the internal workings of labor unions?
Then, just in case that hasn't done anything for you, tell me quick: what's the first thing that comes to mind when someone says to you "let's spread the wealth around"?
Go check it out and then get back to us. You might change your mind on a point or two.
Don't blame....
Blame has been institutionalized in the Democratic party.
It's not the Democrat party's sacred beliefs that Obama has been talking about changing all these months.
Mike_twincities
Please, someone give me something.
I could give you many good arguments for open markets, for they are legion. But I'm not sure what good it would do. There are only two parties that can win elections on any serious scale in this country. One of them leans way towards Marx, and the other is currently an intellectual wind sock.
Wind socks don't win very many elections.
I want to see some of these people working at McDonald's so I can go in and leave them a penny tip.
That made no sense. Nobody leaves tips at McDonald's, so they're not going to be insulted by your gesture. They'll just be all like, "Dude, that crazy guy left me a penny tip."
With the implosion of the Republican part, there is in fact a huge opportunity for the Libertarian party, right here in front of us. But is anything going to be done with this opportunity?
I'd love to be amazed and see it happen. But most Libertarians I've known, would much rather the right in a theoretical sense, than relevant on the national stage. The Libertarian party is in need of a house cleaning, at least as bad as the Republicans.
Being relevant is one hell of a lot more work than being right in your own mind.
...hmmm, well, they gave the mention of Sarah Palin...
Who?
I frankly don't understand what all this fear about socialism is.
Capitalism = 35.0% top tax rate
Socialism = 39.6% top tax rate
Now do you understand?
Where do we go from here? I am almost tempted to resign myself from discussing politics at all, anymore, as the last few years have been difficult. I have grown so tired of making my arguments I do not know if I can keep it up. I think I feel defeated.
If your not enjoying arguing with your co-workers and acquaintances, try not arguing with them. It's not a very effective way of convincing anybody of anything, anyway.
Americans have put in power hard leftists in the excutive and legislative branches at a moment when their preferred policies of higher taxes and more government control over the private sector will do the most harm. This is going to be a rough four years.
Barr may be about to have the best performance of a LP candidate since 1980.
No, looks like Barr will get close to 500,000 votes and no more. Latest count with 90% in is around 468,000.
This is a massive defeat for the Republican Party, but also for the Libertarian Party. In addition to Barr's not attaining the 1 million goal, it does not appear any Libertarians were elected to State Legislatures or other offices of significance.
Even more insulting, Nader will most likely finish 3rd over Barr.
You can only conclude by these results, that America has rejected Liberty. Americans no longer want limited government.
Capitalism = 35.0% top tax rate
Socialism = 39.6% top tax rate
That requires you to believe this will be the extent of the tax hikes w/ our current deficit and all the new spending. I kinda doubt that.
Liberal defeated by the socialist... last night I spent watching my Drew Carey DVD!! Arrived with perfect timing!!!
Couldn't have anything to do with the assholes that have been telling them that that's what the Republicans stand for, could it?
I fucking hate it when I have to agree with Dondero. Almost as much as I hate agree with joe.
Given the options that were on the table, this election, I hardly see how anybody can rationally conclude that Americans have rejected liberty.
Or did you really expect a massive turn out for a third party candidate?
Just took a quick peek at Democratic Underground. Man, those are some unkind bitches over there!
You can only conclude by these results, that America has rejected Liberty. Americans no longer want limited government.
Since the early days of its history, the Libertarian Party has promoted one narrow vision of liberty that doesn't appeal to the public and hasn't been communicated well. The failure of the Libertarian Party does not equate to the failure of libertarianism.
Americans have put in power hard leftists in the excutive and legislative branches at a moment when their preferred policies of higher taxes and more government control over the private sector will do the most harm. This is going to be a rough four years.
Are you sure they're going to be as hard-core as you anticipate, when measured against the last eight years of massive growth in government debt, assaults on basic civil liberties, and astounding corporate cronyism?
Mike Laursen,
Do you really think that a candidate with a moderate libertarian philosophy could have won this election? Really? I'm inclined to believe the opposite, that he or she would have been even more badly trounced than McCain. Excuse my pessimism.
Sorry, economist, I'm not sure what statement of mine you're responding to. When did I say that I thought a moderate libertarian could have won this election?
1776 united states became a independent federal republic, in 1789 elected its first president george washington, 1960 its first roman catholic president john f. kennedy was elected ok finally 2008 its first *afro-american. now lets forget about politics and try to unite and support our new president. sen john mccain is a good man a war hero gov. sarah palin a state chief executive. however she may not be very bright i.e. she thought africa was a country duh its a continent dumbass hockey mom! any way as a independent-moderate i think it was peacefull transition to power.bye
