Poor Charlie
Has Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) cancelled his subscription to The New York Times yet or what? First, the eminent domain-loving daily breaks the news that Rangel is a self-righteous rent control scofflaw. Now the Gray Lady reports that the dapper Harlem congressman has failed to report some $75,000 in rental fees from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic. Seriously, this guy has four rent-stabilized New York apartments and a villa that rents out for $500 a night? Now we know how he can afford all those great suits. From the Times:
New York State law classifies filing a false city or state tax return a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, but Kathleen M. Pakenham, a tax lawyer at the law firm of White & Case, said criminal prosecutions are rare and in most cases, the taxpayer is simply fined 20 percent of the back taxes owed.
[…]
Whatever his legal exposure, the tax problems present a political embarrassment for Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat who has sat on the Ways and Means Committee since 1975. As chairman, Mr. Rangel has pushed for higher taxes on the wealthy, unveiling a $1.3 trillion proposal last year that businesses denounced as a threat to the economy.

What an asshole. Srsly.
If you want to make others pay taxes, you have to pay 'em too.
Rangel can introduce the Obama National Service bill in congress. His conscription bill will be a lot more popular with The Messiah's name on it.
Charlie Rangal is just another sleazy politician?
Say it ain't so.
SIV --
You're starting to be nearly as much of an asshole.
Wow. I've been at the same company for only 10 and some days I want to claw my eyeballs out.
Yet people will continue to believe in and vote for the guy. Incredible.
So he owns a house in a U.S. territory, makes less than $4,000/year all of which goes into the mortgage, and he owes New York State but probably not U.S. taxes on the income.
Reason number 2,468 not to live in NY.
Why is it incredible? He's doing what they would do, including keeping it hidden.
That's why Palin will get a pass, why McCain's latest Walter Reed flub will get a pass, etc.
People support politicians who they think are acting just like they would, up to the point where the politician can be linked directly to damage to their [about to become] erstwhile supporter(s).
There's nothing surprising here, other than that so many fail to see it.
We elect losers because deep down (or not so deep, really), we know we're losers too.
And they're just like us.
How very depressing. Not surprising, not incredible, but very very depressing.
no hugs for thugs,

Democrats can't count how many homes they rent. They are so out of touch with the common man.
The NYTimes reported something bad about a Democrat? Liberal bias!
Yep, NY has a lot of wasteful programs, but it doesn't help matters that much of our federal tax dollars gets transferred to places like Alaska and other states without a state tax.
Surely no one is surprised by this? He's always been a shifty two-faced liar living high off the government hog. But for some reason, he rarely gets truly called out and get to keep his congressional job and even credibility with some people.
No surprise for the Hypocrite Party. Nearly every single one of their members is a hypocrite.
The only exceptions would be those who actually sent a check to the US Treasury over-and-above their taxes. You want to take more of my money for all your pet causes, but you yourself won't voluntarily contribute one dime? Hypocrites.
JB --
I fail to see how a person who pays their lawfully apportioned tax burden is a *hypocrite* for wanting other people to be taxed as well and have that tax money be spent as the government directs.
It may be ideologically distasteful, sure. But hypocritical? That's a stretch.
So he owns a house in a U.S. territory, makes less than $4,000/year all of which goes into the mortgage, and he owes New York State but probably not U.S. taxes on the income.
Reason number 2,468 not to live in NY.
I don't understand what it is exactly you are saying here, can you clarify?
good description of most! (if not all)
Say what? A "political embarrassment"? HaHaHaHaHaHa This is the party of Marion Barry, William Jefferson, Adam Clayton Powell, Alcee Hastings, Kwame Kilpatrick . . . "Embarrassment" is not a meaningful term.
Crusader Rabbit --
What group of people on Earth is *not* host to a plethora of demons? I fail to see how bad eggs indict the whole the way you seem to want them to.
"What group of people on Earth is *not* host to a plethora of demons?"
Possibly Quakers.
LMN --
You misunderstand. I *am* indicting the whole. Career politicians are, by nature, beyond embarrassment; there's no such concept in their world. They're neither motivated nor deterred by what most of us think of as "being embarrassed," only by how they can overcome whatever obstacles there are (including their own malicious or felonious behavior) to their continuing in positions of power and influence.
The biggest mistake we ever made (and in California, where I am, it was only in the 1960s) was allowing for a full-time legislature. When a person's job is to make laws, and when he has enormous personal power over other people's lives, guess what? He'll make lots of laws and exercise lots of power -- and he won't give it up just because he's "embarrassed."
"You're starting to be nearly as much of an asshole."
Wow, what a brilliant argument from a true genius.
CR --
I refuse to indict the whole on the basis of bad eggs. In Rhode Island, we have had our share of *great* politicians, from John and Lincoln Chafee, to Claiborne Pell, to T. F. Green. It does no service to either understanding or reason to lump such men in with the Ted Stevens and Kwame Kilpatricks of American politics.
B -
SIV has been flogging this mandatory service thing for weeks. It's bullshit, obviously, on its face, and SIV (being a reasonably intelligent and analytical person) fucking knows it. And yet he keeps flogging, because his ideology has clouded his better sense. It *has* to be that leftists are rotten and evil, otherwise his world simply doesn't make sense.
It's beyond argument with him, as many, including some of the more conservative on the board have even tried to point out how dumb he's being, but to no avail. Generally I call it how I see it: he is acting irrationally, with a deliberate intent to provoke. Hence, an asshole.
"I refuse to indict the whole on the basis of bad eggs. In Rhode Island, we have had our share of *great* politicians, from John and Lincoln Chafee..."
Lincoln Chafee great? Talk about setting the bar way too fucking low.
"I fail to see how a person who pays their lawfully apportioned tax burden is a *hypocrite* for wanting other people to be taxed as well and have that tax money be spent as the government directs."
But as recent events have made clear, Rangel is not paying his lawfully apportioned tax burden, yet he expects us to pay more. That is a hypocrite.
Richard M. Nixon was a Quaker.
But as recent events have made clear, Rangel is not paying his lawfully apportioned tax burden, yet he expects us to pay more. That is a hypocrite.
No disagreement here. But that was not what JB was arguing. He said that a person had to pay *above* his or her tax burden to avoid being a hypocrite. That seems pretty silly to me.
B, you from Rhode Island? If not, I'd find it hard to believe you'd know enough about the guy to know upon what I base my assessment.
Even if not, the ability to maintain integrity or fidelity to original principles in the face of a party that is quickly abandoning theirs gets you most of the way to good, if not great, these days.
If I haven't much missed my guess, he will run for governor next term. And unless something radical happens, I sure as hell will be voting for him.
Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat who has sat on the Ways and Means Committee since 1975.
You know, I've only seen his face and upper torso photographed, but I knew he had a huge ass. You'd have to have a big ass to sit on all those people for that long.
SIV started post last winter as "Single Issue Voter." His "single issue," supposedly, was the legalization of cock fighting.
He made a big show of boo-hooing how he was a single issue voter, and totally not a Republican shill, as he did his usual act of making a big whore of himself for the GOP.
Basically, he doesn't feel any need to be straight with you, and looks at the this whole community as people to lie to for his purposes.
Asshole? Yep.
Lincoln Chafee? Jesus LMNOP. I don't know what the guy does in RI, but I know that he does not do what he should in the US Senate, which is uphold the Constitution of the United States. He may be better than some politicians, but the guy is still not many levels above slime in my book.
http://www.ntu.org/blog points out that Rangel chairs the committee that writes US income tax law! If even he can't figure it out, there's not much hope for the rest of us.
.. my impression of "Poor Charlie" is that he is one of the biggest prohibitionist assholes in Congress, proof, to me, that the Dems are no where near any kind of drug law reform ..
.. Hobbit
There's a part of me that can't wait for the election to be over, no matter who wins. Watching posters' partisanship come out so ugly is starting to make me really thank that the prez elections only happen once every 4 years.
lmnop,
But that was not what JB was arguing. He said that a person had to pay *above* his or her tax burden to avoid being a hypocrite. That seems pretty silly to me.
I agree, hypocrite is the wrong word. A person who wants something done, then uses force (via democracy, for example) someone else to do it (or pay for it) isnt being hypocritical. It is much, much worse. Slaver is the first word that comes to mind, Im sure there are better ones.
It should be said that the $75K is probably the *Gross* (or it's the total lifetime income not reported). The *net* i.e. the taxable income is more like around $5K / annum
From TFA:
So he owns a house in a U.S. territory,
The Domincan Republic is not a US Territory (although not for lack of trying)
oh, shit
What Elemenope and joe said about SIV is true.
Looks like that first link didn't work, so:
oh, shit
But, but, Charlie Rangel was in the Real War. That's why we need conscription now, to help all the youngsters grow up to be like Charlie, a person of integrity.
Mr. Rangel...has sat on the Ways and Means Committee since 1975
And this is the way you skirt the law, if you know what I mean.
Charlie Rangel has called for a draft and has introduced a bill calling for conscription:
110th CONGRESS
1st Session
H. R. 393
To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service , either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to make permanent the favorable treatment afforded combat pay under the earned income tax credit, and for other purposes.
While not indicating support for this particular bill Barack Obama is on record supporting similar language about "National Service".
There is a much better case that Barack Obama supports compulsory "National service" (including a military draft) than John McCain or any other currently serving Republican politician.
SIV --
You've slipped over into total parody.
Unless you weren't paying attention, you know *why* Rangel introduced that bill. He said it out loud. Many times.
Did Rangel believe the bill would ever pass? Did he *support it passing*? You know the answers to those two questions, too.
And Obama is not on record *anywhere* supporting a military draft or mandatory national service.
Try his own website
Service Image
Barack Obama's Plan for Universal Voluntary Public Service
Sure it is voluntary because everyone volunteers whether they want to or not.The important word there is universal.
The language of the proposal and the National Service lobbying groups(featuring prominent Obama associates) fits in neatly with Rangel's bill.
Even a lefty "Progressive" acknowledges Barack Obama supports a draft
SIV, I despise Rangel but he was not serious with the draft bill, he was making a point. Stupidly done, but a point nonetheless.
Wow, sounds to me like Poor Charlie is at it once again! Go figure!

The plan and initiatives listed on your link, SIV, to Barack Obama's website look literally *nothing* like a "draft" or a "mandatory service plan". The link describes expanding Peace Corps and Americorps, and starting programs to give high school kids the opportunity to learn building trades.
So much like slavery, it's amazing I could ever tell them apart.
The only place in which the word "mandatory" comes up is offering college aid on condition that the person getting the money works for it a little.
Oh, how *horrible*. Instead of just giving people money, we pay them in exchange for labor?! That's inSANE!
(p.s. nice link from a nutty from a month ago, before it became clear what Obama was talking about. With skills like that, one day you could be press secretary for a very important person!)
Episi,
I'm pointing this out because every POTUS election cycle there is a "whisper campaign" directed at young voters that claims there is a Republican secret plan for a draft.Calls for "universal service" emanate from the left and our current selective service law was passed by Democrats and signed bu Jimmy carter after the draft (and selective service draft registration)was ended by Nixon in 1973.
There is more support for conscription/ compulsory national service from the political left than the political right.
Epi --
The real problem there is that you can't match the intensity and gravelly voice of Michael Ironside.
Nobody can.
SIV --
After watching the RNC, can you really say that with a straight face? They elevate military service to just shy of deification, and you're saying that the Right wouldn't in a second draft everyone to participate in a cleansing crusade to destroy "enemies of freedom"?
Huh. Sure, more support on the Left for that these days. Right.
The real problem there is that you can't match the intensity and gravelly voice of Michael Ironside.
But I concentrated! Really hard!
"All right. We're gonna do this the scanner way. I'm gonna suck your brain dry! Everything you are is gonna become me. You're gonna be with me Cameron, no matter what. After all, brothers should be close, don't you think?"
More linkage fomr Volohkh
Obviously, neither side is going to campaign on a platform of bringing back the draft."Warmonger McCain" has been/and will be accused of doing so,particularly on chain emails, blog posting and comments. There is more reason to suspect mandatory National service (including military service) to come from the Democrat left.
SIV --
You keep saying that the Left has this wicked boner for mandatory service, but you fail epically at moving beyond your airy speculation to actual *evidence*.
You know, the day I have to work on Saturday is the day that the only discussion is SIV's draft contention? This sucks.
More from his resume:
Congressman Rangel serves as chairman of the Congressional Narcotics Abuse and Control Caucus.
Here's a post with many links related to Obama's national service plans. Apparently the service is basically mandatory for middle and high school students, because the schools only get federal money if they meet his goals.
Episiarch,
Give joe a call. Don't you lie! I KNOW you have his phone number. It's to coincidental that everytime things get boring, Joe suddenly makes things interesting.

Rangel almost certainly owes US tax on that income, the US taxes the income of its citizens no matter where it is earned. I'm in the real estate biz, and if his rental income is that high depreciation won't cover it. Foreign tax owed is almost certainly less than what he owes the IRS, to whom he must pay the difference. Don't forget principal isn't deductible (a common "mistake" property owners make). If he didn't report it to the state, my bet is he didn't report it to the IRS either. Rapacious tax authorities like those of NY and CA like to compare a resident's federal and state returns, then demand an explanation if they find differences. They usually tell the IRS if they find anything. The question is whether the IRS will go after a prominent Black congressman for tax fraud, because if they did Rangel will almost certainly scream "racism".
Crucify that bastard.
the day I have to work on Saturday is the day that the only discussion is SIV's draft contention
That's some irony. "Work"? They pay you for posting all day on Hit & Run?
That's the job for me. Where do I apply?
"Work"? They pay you for posting all day on Hit & Run?
He's not the only one. Some of us motherfuckers are chained to desks all day (and/or night) long.
Why is there all this McCain shit all over this cite (in the form of banners/ads)? I am not even sure he is the lesser of the two evils (though Obama is shitty)
Can we play a round of 'Name that Party'?
Who cares what this egg head thinks or says does it really matter. I think not?

Enjoy your job in the coal mine, sucker.
First John Edwards gets the kiss of death, now Charlie Rangel wakes to find the horse's head in bed with him.
Betray Hillary at your own risk.
this guy writes the tax code and wants us to believe he did not know the rent proceeds were taxable. His lawyer obviously does not know anything about how the tax code is applied to normal people. This is outright fraud. Intentional understatement of income. To use the ignorance clause is rediculous, after all just ask him and he will tell you how smart he is. Typical do what I say not what I do attitude for the Washington Elite.
Does anyone believe that over 20 years he collected only 75,000?That works out to be 1 week a year @ 500.00 @ day. Better guess, fully rented by people needing favors, nobody uses it, checks written to management company, profits deposited into numbered off-shore accounts

Oh what a caring thing she just did! How Christian! How altruistic! How completely devoid of an ulterior motive! You can tell because she did this in front of a member of the press, which carries way more weight than a sincere note or phone call, which I'm also sure she's made.
