Gen X Veep Nominee In One-Family Baby Boom
Sarah Palin baby mama brouhaha nukes the fridge within 24 hours, as comely 17-year-old daughter Bristol announces that she is pregnant and will marry the father.
Not sure this disposes of the rumors, but it does suggest the abundant fresh air and outdoorsy living in the Last Frontier are conducive to fertility. May also please Juno fans, social cons, Democrats, and glass ceiling watchers. (Still no woman president but at least we can have a woman Billy Carter.) Best wishes to the mother-to-be.

Stick a fork in her. Shes done.
There really isn't much to do out there in Alaska, is there.
There seems to be an inordinate level of interest in the wombs of the Palin women. Was there this much stupidity when Geraldine Ferraro was tapped for VP?
I was thinking that she can now bring in the Jerry Springer constituency.
So who is the dad?
Gen X? It's a stretch calling her Gen X. She's my age, stuck between stupid media labels. Too young to be Baby Boomer and too old to be Gen X.
"There seems to be an inordinate level of interest in the wombs of the Palin women. "
Since she is so stridently pro life and is selling herself on her biography and not much else, it is a fair issue to bring up.
This whole thing is turning into a corny Lifetime movie.
juno is a terrible movie. i just wanted to add that.
Let's start a new, improved rumor. The father is...John McCain!
She's GOING to marry the father? So she's been having, um, PRE-MARITAL SEX? I thought, according to the GOP, that such a thing did not happen. I mean, that's why sex education is such bunk, right, because good girls just wait for marriage?
Maybe it's all that time away from the home by Palin..Tsk Tsk..
"nukes the fridge"
Did you just make that up?
I really wouldn't say the campaign is done yet; according the article I read McCain knew about this, which at least....makes me think he knows what he's doing? (Wait, am I an idiot?)
Plus this will be a hard issue to attack really hard on. Any time you attack Palin, it looks like you are attacking her daughter.

Well, people cared about Palin.
"hit and run'' is really churnin' it out lately. btw is tim cavanaugh back for good?
Let's start a new, improved rumor. The father is...John McCain!
No, you're thinking small. The father is...you!
Jonathan-
The first commandment of a VP is "Do no harm". Palin is doing harm now.
Also it makes it look like McCain didn't vet her properly.
I thought, according to the GOP, that such a thing did not happen.
Work over that strawman, MNG! attack! good boy!
anyway, once you're done caricaturing half of the body politic in this country, let us all know.
Let's start a new, improved rumor. The father is...John McCain
You can't do it, my friends.
is tim cavanaugh back for good?
I assumed they just picked him up for convention/campaign coverage but we can pray for those LA Times paychecks to bounce. Not like that paper turns a profit.
Now it all makes sense why Obama-Biden,nor the DNC, were attacking her.
First it looked like he was trying to mop up the PUMAs with her, but now it's pretty obvious she's his bridge to his long-snubbed religious right. Bridge to nowhere?
You all are idiots who cannot see the obvious: The daughter, whatever her name is, gave birth to trig, then got pregnant again with a another baby. Just check the timelines and look at the pics of the daughter from last year: Same body then as now, when she is 5 months pregnant. Its the same shit, pregnant again! I expect that Sarah would have taken responsibilty for this baby also, but decided to go the honest route since becoming vp candidate.
TAO
You need some quotes from conservative GOP faithful on sex education, contraception, or pre-marital sex? How about party platform planks? We could make it fun...
You need some quotes from conservative GOP faithful.
Moving the goalposts, are we? I thought you just said that the whole GOP doesn't believe pre-marital sex exists.
Actually perfect timing for Mccain on this one. Release the news on a day when all the coverage is on the hurricane. In 2 days, this will either be a non-story, or something that the Dems touch at great, great peril.
You know, this Tom Eagleton-esque pick is something I'd expect the Democrats to do.
TAO
You are quite a itchy little cunt, eh? Yes, as this is a blog I was joking a bit when I said they "think it doesn't exist." But I think everyone knows my meaning.
In platform after platform, article after article, speech after speech, GOP elected officials and pundits hold that sex education must be abstinence based and that making contraception more available or instructing kids as to how to use it only kets kids to have pre-marital sex and therefore should be discouraged. The most common Dem argument is that the kids are going to be having sex anyway so we should teach them and equip them so as to promote safer sex. The GOP respone is that its the education that creats the problem. We should just have them sign pledges to remain and urge them to stay true to abstinence and this will work.
Alaska's own GOP party platform calls for sex education to be abstinence education ("We support requiring active, written parental consent prior to teaching any sex education curricula. Any such curriculum must be abstinence-based."). I guess ol' Sarah didn't get the message across in her own home. This of course is exactly the message of liberals on this subject: you can preach abstinence all day and your kids will come home pregnant because they simply will not be so.
MNG, are you beginning to think the Democrats might not blow this after all, but that the Republicans just might?
I heard that Chelsea is really Gennifer Flowers' daughter with Bill.
BDB
What am I, chopped liver?
Janet Reno is Chelsea's father.
The GOP respone is that its the education that creats the problem.
That is not true, even if it were spelled right. The social conservative position on sex ed is that authority figures should never countenance sexual activity they consider immoral.
Joey Hairplugs-
You're looking like an awfully solid choice by comparison.
There seems to be an inordinate level of interest in the wombs of the Palin women.
There's an inordinate interest in the wombs of women in general, especially young, attractive, white women. Tabloids have a perpetual vigil for celebrity baby-bellies. The Palins are just the latest targets.
BDB
No, I think McCain has won.
Yes, I'm airing some things I don't like about Palin. I do wish she had more educational accomplishments and her daughter's teenage pregnancy validates the liberal stance on that issue, but despite TAO's inability to let any criticism of Palin go by unattacked, I actually think in my mind her pluses are quite strong. Her willingness to combat corruption in her own party is in my opinion huge. So while I think she was not the best pick for the country she has a lot of good points. I think VP's don't really do much, and I would not cancel a vote for McCain based on the Palin pick by any means.
Now I'm just me. I think Palin will play well in the general public. I don't think McCain will lose anyone that was not already going to vote for him, and I think he may gain some women voters, and from what I hear around here maybe a few independents, libertarians and conservatives from this pick.
I said a while back that if he picked a woman he could go ahead and measure the drapes in the White House. I stand by it.
Quite often young women get pregnant to be able to leave a bad home situation. Just sayin'
cunty
Conservatives don't commonly make the claim that contraceptive availability and non-abstinence sex education leads to more, not less, unwanted pre-marital sex?
cuntivore | September 1, 2008, 1:55pm | #
Well done, that is a new one for me. I guess "vagitarian" was too passe?
There's an inordinate interest in the wombs of women in general, especially young, attractive, white women
You'd think the interest would be in...other parts. Or is that just me?
MNG, they do make those claims. You were implying that they think no premarital sex if there weren't sex ed, which is (a) clearly untrue if meant seriously, or (b) not funny, and not really applicable to this story, if intended as a joke. Take your pick.
MNG...what, exactly, is your point? This is some kind of "gotcha" moment for the entire Republican party?
I mean, I don't even know what the sex ed curricula in Bristol Palin's school is. For all you and I know, she WAS taught about contraception.
Which is why I don't know what the hell you're going on about.
I know they were attempting to draw in some women voters with this pick, but maybe now they should take stock of the undecided MEN they are going to turn off by having a ticket that is a drama queen's delight. Guys just tend to walk away from that shit.
henry, I for one have my interest piqued by an entire family of women who bang on the first date.
Henry, are you high?
Its no more true that most Republicans are against sex-ed and pro-abstinence than it is that most Democrats are in favor of free love.
Actually I suspect that this issue is a non-issue for the vast majority of voters in both parties. Plenty of Democrats don't want their daughter sleeping around. Plenty of Republicans are willing to take theirs to an abortion clinic if that's what it takes to save their future. I'm talking the mainstream membership, not single issue fringe loons.
In fact, one hardly ever hears Republicans seriously arguing that sex ed should be removed from schools. They bring up abstinence as a suggestion that kids do it voluntarily usually. Their main angle is trying to build an abstinence *movement* not an effort to ban sex ed from the schools.
Hurricane + Labor day = Trash day
"nukes the fridge"
Did you just make that up?
I think it's from the newest Indiana Jones movie, though I'm not sure what it means when used.
Let's just say this:
Teen pregnancy rate in the U.S.: .8 out of 10
Teen pregnancy rate in the Palin household: 1 out of 5
Family values and abstinence indeed!
MNG - did you just put in your application to the Moral Majority or something?
This baby news is just like a fairytale that I read:
http://moms-views.blogspot.com/
Just wait for the next part of the story to be told.
"Its no more true that most Republicans are against sex-ed and pro-abstinence than it is that most Democrats are in favor of free love."
So I became a Democrat for nothing?
From the linked article:
"The 17-year-old unmarried daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child."
Those liberal bloggers - just reeking of class!
"Nuked the fridge" is the new "Jumped the Shark".
Prediction: this is going to go entirely positively for the GOP. Dems touch this at their peril from ANY angle. Stick with the experience thing. Obama already responded with the best possible response (which by the way is an indication of the man's smarts): His mom gave birth to Him at age 18, so everybody better STFU already.
So if I had kids, I wouldn't have Palin babysit them. This does not affect my vote.
"MNG - did you just put in your application to the Moral Majority or something?"
No TAO, but it's great to see that the Moral Majority's (Dobson, Falwell Jr.'s, et al's) fav V.P. pick can't seem to keep her own under-age daughter from the dreaded "sex outside marriage!"
You don't see any irony there?
Preachy moral majority telling us for years about the liberal permissive secular culture fostering awful "sex outside marriage" and now their darling finds it in her own home? LOL!
Somewhat amusingly, Juno is also the name of Alaska's capital.
A challenge: create a witty headline linking the two.
MNG, Those are the reported figures for teen pregnancy. They are actually higher due to the common occurrence of mothers claiming their teenage daughters' children as their own.
MNG - tee-hee...teenage pregnancy is a tragedy in the ghetto but funny when you want to score political points.
Does being a sack of shit come naturally to you or did you have to really study at it?
No TAO, but it's great to see that the Moral Majority's (Dobson, Falwell Jr.'s, et al's) fav V.P. pick can't seem to keep her own under-age daughter from the dreaded "sex outside marriage!"
1. Moral Majority disappeared in 1990.
2. Dobson wasn't in the Moral Majority
3. How could she be their "darling"? She's been a national politician for barely two years.
Anything else you want to invent? Wanna claim credit for the internet?
