Carlin Kicks the F*cking Bucket
The guy whose raunchy lines your prudish friends hated you for reciting in crowded restaurants, George Carlin, is dead of a heart attack at 71 years old.
CNN misses him so much that it's hosting an ever-so-lightly censored version of the "Seven Dirty Words" sketch on its site. The sketch (which grownups can view uncensored below) led to Carlin's arrest and the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case, FCC v. Pacifica Foundation. Fortunately, the 5-4 ruling let Carlin off the hook on the grounds that his monologue was "indecent but not obscene"; unfortunately, it also gave the Federal Communications Commission some guidelines on how to censor the airwaves without violating the Constitution.
Carlin refused to vote, calling the electoral process the "delusion of choice." Ironically, one of the last times he publicly discussed politics was during an interview with the late Tim Russert.
For your pleasure, a compilation of reason-esque Carlin quotes:
"Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong."
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."
"Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity."
"If we could just find out who's in charge, we could kill him."
"Think off-center."
And of course, the video:
Nick Gillespie on Carlin's American Spirit, here. Jacob Sullum writes here on two decades of post-Seven censorship.
UPDATE: Check out Jay Dixit's thorough and fascinating interview with Carlin on the Psychology Today blog.

Shit!
Piss!
Fuck!
Cunt!
Cocksucker!
Motherfucker!
Tits!
(my initial reaction to the news)
May his body decay into the earth as nicely as fucking possible.
(source)
He was the Lenny Bruce of my era. I miss him.
For an apolitical person, he left an awful many great rhetorical arguments for libertarian politics lying around like loaded weapons.
"Selling's legal. Fucking's legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?!"
It's about time! (The H&R post, that is.)
My thoughts on Carlin's life and career here.
Is someone going to do an editorial cartoon, a' la Russert, only this time it's Carlin flipping off the God-hand?
Rage on George, rage on.
If these things really happen in threes, I'd like to nominate Paulie Shore and Margret Cho to round out the trilogy.
"Is someone going to do an editorial cartoon, a' la Russert, only this time it's Carlin flipping off the God-hand?"
Carlin has had a bigger impact on American culture, American media, and yes, even American politics, than Russert could dream of.
I'm going to go to the mall tonight and look for some Carlin stand up specials. I need recomendations about which ones are best.
"Carlin refused to vote, calling the electoral process the "delusion of choice.""
I used to think that line of thinking was foolish. This current election cycle is starting to change my mind. I am thinking about voting for issues only this year and maybe writing in the names of dead people for every other office. I may do Carlin the honor of voting for him for something.
BY issues I mean ballot iniciatives.
Whoa, Rufus is dead? Bogus.
Why on earth would reason piss on Carlin's grave by censoring the word "Fucking?"
Come on folks, that's simply unacceptable.
*wags finger*
I will miss his work.
Romster,
Recommendations for video specials: What am I doing in New Jersey?
"Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity."
I didn't know that Reason wanted to be associated with ear-tickling but glib and superficial statements like that. If you answered "virginity" to the question "Fight:peace::screw:?" your SAT score dropped.
"Why on earth would reason piss on Carlin's grave by censoring the word "Fucking?""
One word, well, one compound word: nannyware. Some filters would block H&R if that word were in the title of a post.
He was the Lenny Bruce of my era.
Only funny.
crymethink, so then, tell me, is it possible to be a virgin if you have had sex and you are not a sitting president with obstruction of justice charges pending?
The thing about Carlin that always struck me was his ability to observe the way people use language. He did that as well as anyone I've ever seen.
Forget the 7 words. He did more with common, everyday words.
If these things really happen in threes, I'd like to nominate Paulie Shore and Margaret Cho to round out the trilogy.
And for the unpardonable offense of grouping Carlin in with those two blowhards, you shall be consigned to be whipped about the heels with a rattan pole for all eternity.
"Why on earth would reason piss on Carlin's grave by censoring the word "Fucking?"
For many adults, the guilty thrill of swearing wore off at around 16 years of age.
So true. I was always fond of the bit he did about "stuff".
One word, well, one compound word: nannyware. Some filters would block H&R if that word were in the title of a post.
Well, Carlin wouldn't have wanted to be on those computers anyway.
Change the title!
I remember cassette-taping an HBO special of his in the early 80s, when I was like 12 years old. Aside from "shitpissfuck...", the line that stuck with me the most was "You don't take a shit, you LEAVE a shit."
For many adults, the guilty thrill of swearing wore off at around 16 years of age.
At what age did your principles wear off?
This post is more proof that libertarianism collapses easily into the ideological equivalent of the middle finger.
For many adults, the guilty thrill of swearing wore off at around 16 years of age.
This public service announcement brought to you by the United Douchebags of America.
So true. I was always fond of the bit he did about "stuff".
That remains one of the best comedy moments of all time. It works on so many levels.
"This post is more proof that libertarianism collapses easily into the ideological equivalent of the middle finger."
So, apparently you never actually listened to very much of Carlin's stand up comedy or read any of his books?
I can see disliking Cho although I think she's OK myself... but Shore is simply a waste-of-space 'bag. Equating the two is just wrong.
I thought about that once I hit the "Submit Comment" button... by then it was too late. I was gonna say Rich Little and Yakov Smirnoff, but aren't they already dead, in a sense?
By the way, whose obituary will Mike Barnacle plagiarize when he writes his column about Carlin's death?
Eh? Why the Margaret Cho loathing?
He wasn't equating those two horrible comedians with Carlin, he was offering them up as next to take a dirt nap--because of how much they suck. You guys are way too touchy about Carlin.
Just seconding Fluffy's comment about George being a masterful analyst of language. That was his real genius. The combination of laughter and intelligence that was George is one that is all too rare. Thanks for the laughs and thanks for also being unafraid to speak truth to power and take on the pieties of the arrogant and smug everywhere.
And nowhere better than his bit on the environmentalist movement.
Taktix,
I thought the censoring in the title was a joke. And a funny one too. I laughed when I saw the title.
I'm going to go to the mall tonight and look for some Carlin stand up specials. I need recomendations about which ones are best.
All of them.
My first exposure to George was his G-rated appearances on TV. I was always fond of the hippy-dippy weatherman myself.
"In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!"
I will definitely miss Carlin more than that Tim guy that died last week...
You guys are way too touchy about Carlin.
Starting to sound like that whole Democrat/Democratic thingie from an earlier thread.
Although noted earlier this is the proper place to note, that I suspect that the decline from 12 protestors and 20ish signs to only 4 protestors and the same number of predictible/usual signs, in front of the METRO entrance to my office, is due to the passing of Mr. Carlin. Some of us grieve at work, some take the day off.
I'm too lazy to look it up, but Carlin was a supporter of campaign finance reform, no?
This post is more proof that libertarianism collapses easily into the ideological equivalent of the middle finger.
Sean, in some ways, you are correct.
Mat J, some of Lenny Bruce's humor requires an understanding of the time in which the bits were originally done. That may be the case with Carlin as well. Imagine how people not yet born might react to George Carlin in 40 years. I don't know. It may be that by then those seven words will be vocabulary word on Sesseme street.
Margaret Cho loathing?
I'll bite.
Margaret Cho is very funny and bright. But I read parts of her book and she has a classic lefty view of the constitution: It only applies to her.
Rufus!
Put me in the What The Fuck? Change the title column.
Carlin was fucking brilliant. He made great observations. He lost something as the years wore on. But at his peak nobody did 'Smart Funny' better.
I miss him. Mosty I miss that there's no one even close to filling his shoes. This country sorely needs someone to lampoon the establishment and the anti-establishment-establishment.
My first exposure to George was his G-rated appearances on TV. I was always fond of the hippy-dippy weatherman myself.
I actually owned that album as a young teen. I was really disappointed when it didn't have any cussing on it, let alone the 7-dirty-words. Still, I laughed my ass off and then proceeded to buy "Class Clown", which *did* have the dirty word skit on it.
needs someone to lampoon the establishment and the anti-establishment-establishment.
I respectfully disagree, Warren. We've been lampooning the establishment since the sixties. We need something new, something never before tried: We need to lampoon authority.
I believe it was Carlin who said, "You people who say, 'You can't complain if you didn't vote' have got it backwards!"
Warren wrote:
"This country sorely needs someone to lampoon the establishment and the anti-establishment-establishment."
THAT is the best description of GC yet. Perfect.
My favorite bit of Mr. Carlin's was "KPLO - Palestine", pirate radio station broadcasting from an undesclosed location, until the abrupt end of the bit.
We need to lampoon authority.
We need to lampoon nationally.
I'm going to go to the mall tonight and look for some Carlin stand up specials. I need recommendations about which ones are best.
All of them.
Way to be completely right and completely unhelpful all at the same time.
A friend of mine from school worked crowd control at a welcome day at the University. Two ditzy freshman girls come up to him and ask:
"Do you know how to get to Fayerwather Hall?"
He considers them for a long moment, and then says:
"Yes."
And then walks away.
BTW it's "ShitPissFuckCuntCocksuckerMotherfucker AAAND Tits!"
re: Cho.
I saw one of her older stand-up acts and was fairly amused, but saw one of her more recent ones and didn't find it funny at all. Maybe she was having an off-day. Either way, she certainly doesn't belong in the same realm as Carlin.
is it possible to be a virgin if you have had sex and you are not a sitting president with obstruction of justice charges pending?
No, it isn't. But it is possible to be at peace even if you've previously been fighting. Therein lies the error in the analogy. A better one would replace "virginity" with "abstinence", though even that one would be superficial, as fighting can arguably lead to a just peace, while screwing leading to abstinence is a dubious proposition.
lmnop:
I think Cho, being a political comedian is running into the same danger Carlin ran into: Eventually, funny just turns into bitter and shrill.
For many adults, the guilty thrill of swearing wore off at around 16 years of age.
This public service announcement brought to you by the United Douchebags of America.
Carlin was right of course regarding government censorship of the airwaves, but cursing on a blog serves only to expose one's limited vocabulary, if not his stunted intellectual capacity. See above for examples.
You're exactly right, Paul.
See: Black, Lewis
George was brilliant when he was bemused by the world around him. He could be hit or miss when he was angry about something.
E,
Way to be completely right and completely unhelpful all at the same time.
Great, the first time I bother reading unfiltered in a few days and this is the nonsense that comes up.
Okay, it is highly unlikely that EVERY CD and DVD by Mr. Carlin will be available at any store that the questioner visits. Most likely there will be 3 or 4. They will all be good, so no problem.
It is not like he is asking to sign up for every record ever recorded and a dumptruck shows up at his house for delivery, only for him to be billed by the ton.
Cho sucks. She's the kind of funny that only really appeals to people who don't actually have a sense of humor. "My mom talks funny!" Hilarious. She's the Kathy Griffin of stand-up.
Kathy Griffin gives me nightmares.
I'm with LMNOP - I thought Cho was funny when I was first exposed to her about 15 years ago, but her more recent stuff leaves me flat.
One would think that the topic of Fisting would be a comedy goldmine, but Cho managed to make a routine on the subject horribly unfunny.
But, hey... can we all agree that Rita Rudner is a terrible stand-up? It's like watching a live-action version of Mallard Fillmore.
Kathy Griffin gives me nightmares.
Was she that redheaded goofball from a Seinfeld episode where she makes a whole stage show out of talking about Jerry?
This post is more proof that libertarianism collapses easily into the ideological equivalent of the middle finger.
Am I the only person who read that and at first took the poster's name to be "Sean Hannity"?
Rest in Peace George. Besides the more famous routines, two of my favorites were his "the planet is fine, THE PEOPLE are fucked," and his bit about how "shell-shock" became "post-traumatic stress disorder." The former opened my eyes to the reality that the planet will be around long after we're gone and that environmentalism can be framed in terms of self-interest, while the latter was a masterpiece about the abuse of language.
I wouldn't be surprised if Carlin had read Orwell's "politics and the english language."
Yup, Montag, thats her.
I've never seen a more obnoxious comedian. Seriously, I will never, ever, ever understand how she could get on national tv.
Same with Carlos Mencia. Seeing his act is enough to make me re-think my position on the border wall.
Guy -- Yes. I still can't stand her because I associate her with that grating character.
My first exposure to George was his G-rated appearances on TV.
Me too, the first time i saw him was as the train conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, i didn't discover his stand up until i was a teenager (late 90's/early millenium) around the time i started watching old stand up of Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks. He was the very best.
RIP if there's any to be had
Rita Rudner? Is she as bad as Robert Klein?
I've never seen a more obnoxious comedian. Seriously, I will never, ever, ever understand how she could get on national tv.
I thought she had an MTV show that did have an episode or two that did not totally suck, but might have been a different annoying redhead.
I can give Kathy Griffin props for her "Suck it, Jesus!" Emmy acceptance speech, but the love ends there.
Best movie line from George was in Outrageous Fortune. George plays a drunken cowboy. Shelly Long and Bette Midler tell him they need a man. George takes a deep breathe, then says OK, but he's been drinking so he might not be that good.
Me too, the first time i saw him was as the train conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, i didn't discover his stand up until i was a teenager (late 90's/early millenium)...
Man, if there's one experience that will permanently fuck you up, it is growing up with the conductor for Thomas the Tank Engine and then one day seeing him do stand-up...
This post is more proof that libertarianism collapses easily into the ideological equivalent of the middle finger.
Am i the only person who read this, agreed, and thought it a good thing?
Steve: No.
Am i the only person who read this, agreed, and thought it a good thing?
No, you're not. Although I always thought the middle finger came first, and the rest was just working out the social niceties.
She might be funnier than Robert Klein... at least she's not still doing stuff that wasn't funny in 1978 like Klein ("I Can't Stop My Leg").
On the off-chance that Rudner tells a funny joke, she ruins it with that idiotic "I just made a funny" look she has on her face.
Carlin was right of course regarding government censorship of the airwaves, but cursing on a blog serves only to expose one's limited vocabulary, if not his stunted intellectual capacity.
Ah, yes, the argument that profanity is the crutch of the inarticulate motherfucker. It wasn't true the first time I heard it, it's not true now. But since profanity apparently disturbs you greatly, how about we just call you a humorless scold and leave it at that?
Ironically, one of the last times he publicly discussed politics was during an interview with the late Tim Russert.
I give up- how is this ironic?
This post is more proof that libertarianism collapses easily into the ideological equivalent of the middle finger.
Gee, I came of age during the late 60's and early 70's. There were two prominent hand gestures in popular culture, the peace sign and the middle finger. Only one of those has had any lasting importance.
I heard Tim Russert died last week.
Same with Carlos Mencia. Seeing his act is enough to make me re-think my position on the border wall.
He was born in the USA. But, Im not opposing to deporting him anyway. His only funny bit is the one about his Dad complaining about Koreans shopowners not using english.
I never liked Rita Rudner much, but she redeemed herself with the bit in Peter's Friends, where she recites all the different possible inflections of "I didn't ask for the anal probe."
I heard Tim Russert died last week.
But that's not ironic. It's coincidental.
Did anybody bother to think that perhaps he did not die of natural causes?
Man, if there's one experience that will permanently fuck you up, it is growing up with the conductor for Thomas the Tank Engine and then one day seeing him do stand-up...
Not the first time either, same thing happened with John Candy and Bob Saget. I got to experience them backward. Of course they dont compare to Carlin, but it's still weird...
that first para should be in italics...
Steve,
Now, just imagine your parents (sounds like you are near my son's age) who grew up watching Mr. Carlin's stage act. Then, they hea a familiar voice that their young child is giggling at . . . and it is GEORGE CARLIN!
But I did think it was cool, even though I expressed serious surprise that he was doing that gig. Much better than that aging Beatle drummer in the same role says I.
But that's not ironic. It's coincidental.
Apparently ironic was being used in the Alanis Morrisette sense.
Did anybody bother to think that perhaps he did not die of natural causes?
A comedian with a history of heart problems dies of a heart attack at age 71.
ummm, nope, sounds like natural causes to me.
If they were going to bump him off they would have done it years ago.
... or are you suggestion O.D.?
Steve,
Do you always believe what they tell you to believe?
Perhaps a UN investigation is in order . . .
But that's not ironic. It's coincidental.
It's ironic if you consider us as the "knowing audience" over against Carlin and Russert, playing the part of the "unknowing actors".
Steve,
Do you always believe what they tell you to believe?
I know you're joking but i'll answer anyway. I believe in Occam's Razor. The old guy died because that's what old people do. He had heart problems and died of a heart attack. No conspiracy necessary. Now if there were traces of white powder found, maybe there'd be more to the story...
Steve,
Now, just imagine your parents (sounds like you are near my son's age) who grew up watching Mr. Carlin's stage act. Then, they hea a familiar voice that their young child is giggling at . . . and it is GEORGE CARLIN!
Sort of like seeing Madonna's childrens book on the store shelf?
Steve,
There were people who wanted him silenced ever since he was heard on WBAI (or was it the LA Pacifica station?).
The truth is out there.
Now if there were traces of white powder found, maybe there'd be more to the story...
Steve, are you suggesting the government killed him with Anthrax?
Sort of like seeing Madonna's childrens book on the store shelf?
ACK! No, that sounds worse and I am glad mine is in law school before being informed of this fact.
Paul,
I thought he was associated with much older musicians, if Ringo could be considered one, that is.
Mat J, some of Lenny Bruce's humor requires an understanding of the time in which the bits were originally done.
I respect him as a free speech martyr and understand that the era's standards he was edgy, but his material still doesn't work for me. Red Fox worked in the same era and I find his stuff as funny today as it was back then.
Matt J,
Yea, Red Foxx rocks!
BTW, he was a WWII draft resistor.
Steve, are you suggesting the government killed him with Anthrax?
I was thinking more along the lines of a cocaine overdose(pun intended) being "helped along" by an unknown party who was present at the time.
But anthrax works i guess, it's not like they've done an autopsy yet.
Anyway, i still think the guy died of natural causes.
Sort of like seeing Madonna's childrens' book on the store shelf?
Fuck. It's like seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger in elective office. Hell, it's like seeing Ronald Reagan in elective office.
Red Foxx Rules!
I like his comments on religions especially well.
Fuck. It's like seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger in elective office. Hell, it's like seeing Ronald Reagan in elective office.
You Win
His "Religion is Bullshit" rant is pure genius.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o
My favorite Red Foxx bit:
You don't fuck? Shiiiiit!
You don't shit? Fuuuuuuck!
God: Hey George - It's time to go.
GC: Shit!
God: Hey, Hey...none of that.
GC: Piss!
God: I'm serious as a heart attack about this!
GC: Fuck!
God: Don't make me come down there!
GC: Cunt!
God: You talkin' to me?!?
GC: Cocksucker!
God: Whoa...I'm gonna kick your ass when you get here.
GC: Mutherfucker!
God: Okay, fuckface...what WILL it take to get your to come here peaceably?
GC: TITS!
GOD: All is well - welcome.
Sad to see him gone. Even though in his last 10 years or so, he became more of a scold than a comedian, he was always entertaining even if I wasn't laughing.
I can't believe no one said this yet:
I propose we all have a "moment of screaming" in remembrance of him.
*For those that may not know or remember, Carlin had a bit where he wondered why we had to have a "moment of silence" after someone dies. paraphrase: "Wouldn't a moment of screaming be more appropriate?"
dead_elvis,
Using the word ironic to describe something completely lacking in irony is exactly the kind of abuse of language George Carlin railed against throughout his career. So doing it in a Carlin tribute is ironic.
Carlin was right of course regarding government censorship of the airwaves, but cursing on a blog serves only to expose one's limited vocabulary, if not his stunted intellectual capacity.
Please excuse me if the coarseness of my aforementioned statement was, by your banal, prudish standards, inappropriate for a web log that, coincidentally, is not of your ownership.
One needs only to look at the context to which I directed my vulgarity to understand it's vital importance. Usage of language dubbed obscene or profane is irreplaceable in the current discussion, as our legal ability to use such conveyance would be suspect at best had we not been liberated by the toil of the stage comedian who has recently become deceased.
Conversely, it is the reaffirmation of our right to use words, which inherently possess no harm outside of superstition, that compels me to protest. Had the comic in question never existed, I solemnly doubt we would be able to use such words without fear of repercussion.
However, for the sake of brevity, I chose a far more succinct manner of expression, so as not to lose the every-increasingly indifferent reader.
In other words, fuck you for trying to censor me with you sophistry.
Change the title.
Sort of like seeing Madonna's childrens book on the store shelf?
Not really, people actually watch Thomas the Tank Engine.
Carlos Mencia is a bargain-bin replacement for Dave Chappelle when he skipped out on his contract.
The worst stand-up comedian right now is Lisa Lampanelli. She might be the only person I would want locked in a concentration camp.
The other strange culture contamination I saw was one time my niece was watching Sesame Street... and I hear a familiar voice, and try to place it. I look over at the screen, and it's Cheech Marin on Sesame Street, playing a genie who appears in a big cloud of smoke...
Nephilium
The worst stand-up comedian right now is Lisa Lampanelli.
Agreed! We get it Lisa, you like to haev sex with black men, next joke please.
The other strange culture contamination I saw was one time my niece was watching Sesame Street... and I hear a familiar voice, and try to place it. I look over at the screen, and it's Cheech Marin on Sesame Street, playing a genie who appears in a big cloud of smoke...
LMAO! Seriously? I got to watch more Sesame Street...
that first para should be in italics
Steve,
It would look better in scare quotes.
Wow, I am beginnign to appreciate my devotion to the SPEED channel even more with this information of modern comics.
Wow, I am beginnign to appreciate my devotion to the SPEED channel even more with this information of modern comics.
there are still good ones out there. I like Katt Williams myself and Chappelle is funny. Incidentally they are both Ohio natives (Go Buckeyes!).
but non that pushed boundaries with wit and humor the way they used to.
I kinda like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, when I accidentally come across it flipping between SPEED and Discovery.
In other words, fuck you for trying to censor me with you sophistry.
News flash, Biff: indiscriminate cursing (as opposed to how Carlin used language) doesn't make you witty or edgy or interesting. It merely informs the world that you're an uncultured lout.
ed,
You might add that you have no power to censor anybody here and can't even try.
I kinda like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour
You are about 40ish, aren't you? That kind of humor totally does not appeal to me. "you ever notice when your wife..." no not really. "isn't funny how, as you get older..." nope i'm lost there. "i'm showing my teenage son the other how to mow the lawn, and he said to me..." ive already changed the channel.
to white/married/middle-class/safe for my tastes.
New Flash, Ed: The stick in your ass may make you walk funny, but it's not amusing to anyone else.
It merely informs the world that you're an uncultured lout.
LOL! The 19th century called....
I wouldn't presume to censor anyone. Not that I could. Are you people really as dense as you seem? Perhaps an AOL chatroom would be more to your liking?
LOL! The 19th century called....
Wow, the joke writes itself.
Perhaps an AOL chatroom would be more to your liking?
Perhaps a smoking room with a single malt would be more to yours?
uncultured lout
Here sir!
here are still good ones out there. I like Katt Williams myself and Chappelle is funny. Incidentally they are both Ohio natives (Go Buckeyes!)
While recognizing that comedy is very subjective....
Dave Atell. Tears down your face funny.
Perhaps a smoking room with a single malt would be more to yours?
I like that idea, with some Cubans of course.
Yes, I am just past dead-middle 40s actually.
News flash, Biff: indiscriminate cursing (as opposed to how Carlin used language) doesn't make you witty or edgy or interesting. It merely informs the world that you're an uncultured lout.
And what information can the world glean about you from the fact that you mindlessly repeat the shopworn hectorings of junior high school teachers?
Perhaps a smoking room with a single malt would be more to yours?
Would be to mine. But authoritah don't allow such things anymore.
Dave Atell. Tears down your face funny.
How could i forget Atell, he is balls to the wall funny!
Atell filmed segments in town for Insomniac but the episode never aired. He's awesome.
It merely informs the world that you're an uncultured lout.
Because cultured people never say fuck, nosirree. They use words like "fornicate" and "enthusiastically copulate". Nope, cultured people never use obscenities where the servants might hear them.
Or perhaps your standards of culture are, like George Carlin, dead. However, he'll continue to have cultural relevance long after you're worm food.
It merely informs the world that you're an uncultured lout.
Jamie Kelly? Jamie Kelly? Can you help us out, here?
Real quick ed, how many words in my 1:36 p.m. post did you need to look up in the dictionary?
Meh, uncultured lout my aching ass...
Mommy, the mean boys are picking on me.
Fess up, kids. You're writing this from the short bus, aren't you?
"Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity."
Of course, if you think it through, you realize screwing is the way to make new virgins, while not screwing cannot increase the number of virgins over the existing number. If everybody stopped screwing, the number of virgins would steadily decline until there were none left, and virginity would be extinct.

While I'm sorry he died, George Carlin was becoming progressively less funny as he aged. As someone here said earlier he was funny when he was musing about something, less funny when he was angry.
I started to read "Brain Droppings" and after about 10 pages sadly came to the conclusion that he had become just a loud-mouthed ass and a con man. And like the generations of con men before him, convinced a great many people he was full of wisdom, when he was really just full of......
I got to see Carlin a couple years ago in Vegas and was disappointed. We left the show thinking that he had turned into a Grumpy Old Guy and not much of his material since made me change my mind. \
That said, I have some of his albums from the 80's and early 90's that are awesome. Funny, concise and true. He should be rightly honored for his contribution to society and entertainment.
And to all of you who mentioned another comic in your post - any comic, funny or not - shame on you. Keep it about George.
"That said, I have some of his albums from the 80's and early 90's that are awesome. Funny, concise and true. He should be rightly honored for his contribution to society and entertainment.

Sadly that is true. But that happens with a lot of performers and artists. They get old and they just run out of material. But that in no way diminishes the good stuff they did. Look at it this way, the fact that Stevie Wonder did Ebony and Ivory and I Just Called to Say I Love You in the 1980s doesn't make the stuff he did in the 70s any less awesome. The same is true for Carlin.
Carlin at his best was everything I like about the late 60s and 70s. Carlin was for me the epitomy of the self relient don't trust anyone who tells you how to live ethic. It was what the hippies tried to be before they got out of college, stopped getting pay checks from mommy and daddy, got their stock options and started sending their kids to private school rather than be educated next to you know a negro or something. Carlin was completely devoid of the elitist bullshit that infects modern liberalism. I know he wasn't what he once was at the end, but I will still miss him and consider the fact that he is dead and people Bill Mahr and Jon Stewart live on to be considerable proof that God is a prick sometimes.
RIP old friend. All of Sodorr mourns your passing. You will be missed
