Please join Nick Gillespie, Jesse Walker, Radley Balko, Kerry Howley, Katherine Mangu-Ward, David Weigel, and Ronald Bailey for drink specials and a summer hors d'oeuvre cookout on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. We'll be gathering on the 18th Street Lounge patio (1212 18th St., NW) to celebrate:

* The publication of our July issue, featuring stories about "how left-wing hippies and right-wing fundamentalists created a libertarian America"; "what science can, and can't, tell us about the insanity defense"; "the contested legacy of the most controversial founding father," Thomas Paine; and much more.

* Yet another record-setting month at Reason Online. We pulled a whopping 2.6 million visits and 10.8 million page views in May.

* Being a finalist in the Western Publications Association "Maggie" Awards for best "politics and social issues" magazine. Also, for our strong showing at the Los Angeles Press Club's 49th annual Southern California Journalism Awards. Hit & Run won the prize for best group weblog. Additionally, Senior Editor Radley Balko was a finalist for best investigative magazine story ("The Case of Cory Maye"), as was former Web Editor Tim Cavanaugh for best entertainment review/column/criticism ("Happy 40th Birthday, Star Trek") and Editor-in-Chief Nick Gillespie for best online column/commentary/criticism (various).

The evening features these special guest stars:

* Age of Abundance author and Reason Contributing Editor Brink Lindsey. Brink is vice president for research at the Cato Institute--and the man responsible for our July cover story on "The Aquarians and the Evangelicals."

* Rogier van Bakel, proprietor of the excellent weblog, Nobody's Business.

* Reason magazine's newest staffer, Associate Editor Michael C. Moynihan, late of the Swedish-based think tank Timbro and The Stockholm Spectator.

* Reason Foundation's new program manager, John Vaught LaBeaume.

Reason is happy to welcome the folks from the Marijuana Policy Project's happy hour!

The fun starts at 6.30 and ends whenever you say it does.

Free copies of the July issue and Reason stickers, too.

The 18th Street Lounge is located at 1212 18th St., NW, near the intersection of Jefferson Pl., 18th St. and Connecticut Ave., NW. Look for an unmarked door next to a mattress store. Walk on up and out to the back patio.

All you Facebook kids, go ahead and RSVP here.

  4. Postmodern Sleaze   18 years ago

Michael Moynihan? He sure doesn't look Black Metal.

Oh, wait, not the neo-Nazi. Never mind.

  5. sage   18 years ago

Will Hippie Jesus be there? Peace, you sheep!

  6. Ken Shultz   18 years ago

Yeah, I'm a tiny, little bit relieved to see that Mr. Moynihan isn't that other guy too.

...I had faith. I mean, I'm all for tolerance of other people's views and the First Amendment and all that, but that other guy probably wouldn't have been a good fit for a libertarian publication.

  7. Randolph Carter   18 years ago

Is that other Moynihan a neo-nazi or a nihilist/"Ubermensch"/Black Metal dude? I think they're two different things.

  8. lunchstealer   18 years ago

The fun starts at 6.30 and ends whenever you say it does.

Woo-hoo! 7 minutes and 23 seconds of fun!

"Look for an unmarked door next to a mattress store." Knock twice, wait 4 seconds, knock once. Ask for Hugo Chavez.

So... if one was actually thinking of attending... how late do these soirees normally run? Is there a Metro stop convenient?

So why didn't you guys do this last week, when I was in DC for a few days for a conference and actually had a Tuesday afternoon free? Must be discrimination against Detroiters--I'm suing...

    Randolph Carter:

Depends. In my experience, having known a fair number of nazis, skinheads, dark-side occultists and the like, the latter type is often anti-semitic and identifies as Neo-Nazi, but generally has nothing to do with Aryan Nations and American Nazi Party types (as the latter type generally doesn't care for wasting their time and loathing on blacks, Mexicans, and other non-Jewish racial minorities, and often finds the former type too Christian and redneck to really see eye-to-eye anyway, at least on anything other than a mutual dislike for the ZOG).

A bit OT: Ron Paul is on Colbert Report tonight, 11:30 PM on Comedy Central!

Jesus Christ! That damn magazine cover keeps popping up.

  17. de stijl   18 years ago

    highnumber,

They couldn't get a licensing clearance for Buddy Jesus. Kevin Smith is a prick on stuff like that.

  18. highnumber   18 years ago

    You're kidding! Right?
They sell Buddy Jesus at the cool, quirky toy shop in my town.

  19. Chris S.   18 years ago

So apparently Jesus had enormous blue eyes and wore lots of eye shadow. Sans the beard, he would have made a reasonably attractive woman.

  20. crimethink   18 years ago

Ron Paul on the Colbert Report

I'm not sure what to think. Colbert did go into some of his more extreme small govt positions (abolishing DoEd, for instance).

  21. XaabaZu   18 years ago

    Thanks Hi#-

Now I pretty much have to get the Bush toilet paper for my brother-in-law.

I was reading a book by Jefferey Hart about the history of National Review magazine, and was introduced to a classicist named Revilo Oliver. Apparentley, he was a linguist at the University of Illinois that spoke eleven languages and was friends with Buckley.

In the book there were some excerpts of articles written by Oliver for National Review and they were some of the wittiest writing I had ever seen. Hart's book said he he had a falling out with NR over his views.

So I started looking up some of his writings and his articles are simply some of the best writing I've ever seen. His attacks on the welfare state, Christianity, communism and liberals make me laugh out loud while reading. Yet, you have to get a little uncomfortable when he starts denying the holocaust and saying stuff like recent studies have shown that even a microscopic amount of Jewish blood can put one under Jewish mind control for many generations to come.

Even when he says disgusting things he's hillarious. Here's him from his post National Review days.

It is simply a racial characteristic of the Jewish mind that it will not take the small amount of care that would be required to make the stories they throw at the goyim at least as believable as fiction published in our magazines of adventure stories.
Take, for example, the slop called "Anne Frank's Diary," which is said to make some feeble-minded Aryans snivel at its pathos. It is simply full of the most glaring inconsistencies. In that tale we are told that a band of poor, persecuted Jews had to hide from the terrible Gestapo in a whole series of rooms that formed a secret [!] part of the house, to which the entrance was through a secret door concealed behind a hinged bookcase. And we are expected to believe that those diabolical Germans couldn't guess how many rooms there were in a house of quite moderate size, and did not become curious when the postman on his rounds brought mail for those Jews in hiding, including lessons from a university in which some of them had enrolled for correspondence courses! On one page, we are told that in their pitiable plight the poor Jews are so terrified that they almost smother a sick Jewess, lest her coughs be overheard by the ubiquitous Gestapo, and a few pages later we are told that when those Jews are having a high old time, they not only scream and shout at one another, but even fire off a revolver!

He killed himself in the early 90s after suffering for a long time with emphysema. Here's to a strange and interesting man.

  23. crimethink   18 years ago

On second thought, Jews do seems predisposed towards militarism and the curtailment of civil liberties.

  24. Grand Chalupa   18 years ago

Any conclusions one forms from logic must ultimately be based on faith because a premise may be evaluated through either of the following means:
? The conclusion is based on the premise, which must be validated by validating the premise upon which it is based ad infinitum.
o This is the ideal approach except that we can not perform this analysis since it requires an infinite amount of thought.
? The premise is the conclusion (i.e., an example of circular logic).
o This proves nothing since one cannot use a premise to prove itself.
o This approach is not any better than assuming the premise is true.
? The premise is true for no reason.
o This proves nothing because we simply assume the premise is true.
Clearly, only the first approach can prove the premise except that its use is beyond human comprehension, whereas the other two approaches prove nothing.

  25. Grand Chalupa   18 years ago

I'm a skeptic and admit that we have a hard time knowing anything. That's why I often trust blind processes like cultural norms and the market economy over human reason. Nice to see my name (and E-Mail address!) stolen to make intelligent points.

You'll have to teach me how to add the little dots.

  26. Emmanuelle   18 years ago

Bravo and congrats to the Reason team for winning for "best group blog" at the Los Angeles Press Club Awards in L.A. last night:

Judges' comment: Impressive churn of high-quality posts during the judging period. Good Group voice with articles well-sourced and linked. Good job of inviting and receiving comments from readers.

For that, you get a nice plaque/cheese board and enhanced prestige, of course.

  27. Troll King of Aspy Land   18 years ago

    Grand Chalupa says:
"You'll have to teach me how to add the little dots."

I say: Create a bulleted list in Microsoft Word, and then copy and paste the list into Reason's comments box.

  28. Troll King of Aspy Land   18 years ago

    However, let's consider the following:
? Logic must possess some degree of validity in order to refute itself.
? When one attempts to logically demonstrate the limited validity of logic, a more logical conclusion is that the understanding rather than the validity of logic is limited.
    _____________________________________________
The following are arguments in favor of using logic despite its limitations:
    ? The above arguments.
? We can only analyze abstractions in logical terms.
? By employing logic, one can reduce his assumptions to a minimum.
o The known alternatives to logic consist entirely of conclusions, whereas logical analysis consists of systemic analysis, wherein the premises form the conclusions.
? One can use logic to analyze any known concept, to some degree, including logic itself.
? The known alternatives to logic possess neither rules nor structure as means of analysis.

Yeah, this post below is almost as hilarious as the the parody I read of Pol Pot's slaughter of the Cambodians. Or take the famine that followed the Great Leap Backward in China...please! And what about that knee slapper concerning the Nanjing massacre...priceless! Ho, ho, good times, good times!

I second the motion that the tie died jesus is the most epilepsy-inducing cover of Reason to date, and should be displayed more sparingly.

I mean, it's not *bad*... just... too... ahghghhhh...

Having it pop up every time I come on the site is getting really tiresome.
