That Deaf, Dumb and Blind Kid? He Can Run for Office
Officials with the Bournemouth Borough Council, in England, say they didn't mean to ban deaf and dumb persons from running for office. They say the wording of an election announcement, which also banned lunatics and idiots from running, was taken from a 1766 election law. While that law is still on the books, they say, the "council treats all people fairly whatever their sexual orientation, age, religious belief, disability, gender or race…."
