Novel-Gate Backfires
Over at the Dallas Morning News, self-described "Christian," "military parent," and "registered Republican" Frank Schaeffer explains why he's voting for Jim Webb:
I was disgusted by an e-mail I just received that's being circulated by campaign supporters of Republican George Allen…
The message goes like this: "First, it was the Catholic priests, then it was Mark Foley, and now Jim Webb, whose sleazy novels discuss sex between very young teenagers. … Hmmm, sounds like a perverted pedophile to me! Pass the word that we do not need any more pedophiles in office."
[…]
I've had it with Republican smears.
The Webb e-mail is the embodiment of the cynical Republican strategists, some of whom must know the difference between fiction and nonfiction. Was Agatha Christie a murderer because she wrote about murder?
According to the Allen camp's logic, God would be a pedophile, too. After all, we Christians believe God inspired the Bible. And God-the-author chose to include the "sleazy" story about Lot offering to send out his young virgin daughters to be raped by the men of Sodom.
The Bible has masturbation scenes, rape, pedophilia and God's favorite man – King David – warming himself with a young virgin in his old age. He's the same man God tells us committed murder after he indulged his peeping Tom fantasies.
Lucky for God-the-author that He's not running against George Allen.
"Catholic priests." Clever. But the winner of the little-boy-penis-gate sleaze-a-thon is clearly Red State's Erick Erickson, who actually compared Webb to admitted pedophile and wannabe child murderer John Mark Kaar.
Judging by Webb's bump in the polls since Allen's campaign leaked the excerpts to Drudge, Shaeffer appears to have some company.

He admits that's in The Bible? Wow. In my experience, fundies tend to dance around the issue (that, and everything that's punishable by death according to the Law of Moses) and focus on the stuff that either confirms their family values fascism or sounds flowery or benevolent.
Yeah. Meanwhile, for real news, Flavor Flav is expecting his seventh child.
That letter is more of indictment of the Bible than Allen, although I doubt Schaeffer meant it like that. Big ups to him for calling Allen out and being truthful about the Bible but how anyone can think God inspired the old testament and still believe in the teachings of Jesus is beyond me.
I would think the last person a Republican candidate would want us to think of is Mark Foley.
I would think that we should consider this a good sign, because perhaps this election cycle will finally eliminate these cheap attacks as an election strategy. Perhaps our society has evolved past this type of demagoguery and politicians will be force to confront each other on the issues, instead of coming up with ridiculous base-inspiring emotional attacks.
I also think that tomorrow I will have the ability to bend time and space to my will, and I also will be the last Highlander standing.
That's some pretty racy stuff coming out of the Allen campaign. Do you suppose his staff is rife with pedophiles?
I dunno Jesse, you might be on to something. In a related story did anyone see this yet?
Meant to include this text from the story.
The leader of the 30 million-member National Association of Evangelicals, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, resigned Thursday after being accused of paying for sex with a man in monthly trysts over the past three years.
This man says he values character and moral authority, which he is able to recognize in people who have served in the military. He says that people like McCain and Webb have earned respect because they have paid their dues. He says that our future leaders should come from the military.
It seems to me that he is just substituting an automatic Republican vote for an automatic military-affiliation vote. I expect, if he looked, he could find people of character and moral authority, and people worthy of respect, outside the military.
Maybe my creep-meter is also triggered by the fact that his wife is also "tipped", and is also going to "dump" her registration. The orders have been given, honey, ten-hut! This guy just creeps me out a little, what can I say.
Show me on the doll where God touched you...
"Show me on the doll where God touched you..."
That's a funny looking doll, Mr. Jeff.

Just heard that story on NPR news a bit ago, TWC.
For some time I've been suspicious of anti-sex crusaders. Originally it was cases like Charles Keating and Howard Ruff who I suspected were throwing up a smokescreen to cover up their larceny but later I began to see it in all kinds of church deacon types.
Then I began to wonder what kind of demons these poor souls must be wrestling with that they see all this evil in others. The bleeding heart side of me feels sorry for them. The hardass side is filled with disgust.
Jon: SHUTUPANDTOUCHIT!

"Reverend, is that a gay marriage ban petition in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"
Jeff P. and Syd are currently vying for title of thread winner.
Isaac, in some cases I think it's demons in the closet--had a friend years and years ago that I always wondered about because he just hated fag boys way too much. And that was when it was much more socially acceptable to hate them. In other cases, I think it's a different kind of demon. My fruitcake sister comes to mind. I don't think her problem is that she's in the closet.
Frankly, I don't know why they care so much. While I honestly don't think that Heather Has Two Mommies should be grade school reading material as it was in San Diego, I don't know why anyone cares who is hanging downtown at Kathy's Talk of the Town having drinks and dinner.
Happy, Jeff, LOL. Spitting wine all over the monitor.
Better not touch it. It might be Chucky.
Funniest story today is the school bus driver that flipped off GWB.
These guys are gonna get pissed if I keep doing all this self-serving crap. 🙂
TWC, I just blogged that story. Thanks for the tip!

Tho-row, are you Alex?
I tried to leave a comment over there just now. Once in IE once in Firefox. Blew me off both times. There is some insidious conspiracy to deny me. I think it began with my spammer harboring ISP and has now acquired a life of its own. It affects my email newsletters, regular emails, and the occasional inability to comment on sites like yours.
Anyway, yes, I think the guy definitely has a Ryan Seacrest sort of image going for him.
TWC-
Yep, that's me. Sorry to hear you can't comment. It might work if you establish an account at the site (free).
Once I removed the homepage link my comment posted....Odd. I'll try the account thing.

I don't know if there's anything to my assumptions.
But every time I hear some preacher rail against sin I get the feeling that he has these urges to buggar the choir boys or rape one of the 9-yr old girls and he assumes everyone has the same urges. I could, of course, be full of it.
I've never really given that much thought into what might motivate female moral scolds. But I assume that sometimes it might be guilt and unresolved sexual issues.

I don;t see any logical problem with someone who has gay sex being against gay marriage...I can be for stem cell research and opposed to government funding of that research...
if the guy had any balls he'd respond to the charges with something like "Just because I had sex with you doesn't mean I think we should be married"...but of course he won't, because he's been trading for too long on the other side of the same outrage and moral indignation coin as his accusers.
"Do you suppose his staff is rife with pedophiles?"
Would it be irresponsible to speculate? It would be irresponsible not to.
Bartram is probably right. Now we know that Rev. Billy Graham is a daily reader of a book just loaded with violence and sexual perversion. No wonder Graham's never run for office (though his is "close" friends with every president since, what, U.S. Grant?)
