Ohio Electoral Snapshot
If Ohio is, as the license plates put it, "the heart of it all," then the Buckeye State may be a good bellwether about the upcoming election. A new poll there by the University of Akron's Bliss Institute finds:
—Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell is still getting his ass kicked by Democratic challenger, Congressman Ted Strickland.
—Republican incumbent Sen. Mike DeWine has pulled even with challenger Sherrod Brown.
—a ballot initiative jacking the minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.85 has support of 73 percent of likely voters.
—some sort of law banning smoking in most public places will pass (there are two on the ballot).
—slot machines at horse racetracks may pass; 48 percent of likely voters are in favor and 40 percent are against.
—voters are generally unhappy. Eighty-one percent say the economy matters big-time; 80 percent say corruption in government is a big problem; and 78 percent say foreign policy is "very important."
—Eighty-four percent believed their votes would be counted fairly (this, in a state plagued with concerns on that score).
More here. Strangely, the Bliss Institute crowd didn't ask about Ohio State's seeming steamrollering to another national title.

The minimum wage would rise from $5.15 to $6.85, giving raises to 720,000 Ohioans, according to Tim Burga of the AFL-CIO and leader of Ohioans for a Fair Minimum Wage.
God I hate these union assholes. Ohio is bleeding jobs right now anyway, so let's make it even more expensive to buy goods made in-state, because our state economy hasn't completely collapsed yet.
Wow. I pretty much knew all that, but when you put it all up there, one right after the other, I can't help but get this really bad feeling.
The only thing keeping me here is the sense that it's ultimately like Churchill's view of democracy: it really and truly sucks, but what alternative is there for a libertarian atheist if he isn't filthy rich?
It's very sad. I grew up in the rust belt in northeast Ohio, and many people up there honestly in their hearts believe that all they have to do is wait....and the steel mills will come back. As a matter of fact, Youngstown State University, as of a couple years ago, was still teaching engineering methods that haven't been used for 15-20 years - because that's the way the used to do it in the steel mills - 15-20 years ago. It's not just Ohio. You definitely see the same mentality in towns in PA and WV.
Jesus. A 25% raise in one fell swoop. I'd be lucky to see that over 5 years.
I remember when it was $4.25 an hour (mid-late 90's).
Just what an old Rust Belt economy needs to fall further into Rust Belt-iness.
So what we see here is a state that is going to vote Democratic this year, that is also going to vote against economic freedom, and on top of that is going to vote against personal freedom.
Now tell me why I should vote for Democrats? It seems like almost any reason to vote Democratic is going to totally disappear come November. Luckily, my freedom has already been curtailed quite a bit by my blue state government (solution to everything: register with the state or police and pay a bribe) so I'm in less danger from the things passed by the new Congress and approved by the Rubber Stamper in Chief.
Maybe it's time to give Ohio back to the indians. Steel and cars aren't coming back. Farming isn't viable. I doubt Silicon Valley and Wall Street will relocate. The Mexkins are running our Mom & Pop meth labs out of business.
Ohio: We Got Nothin'
I don't think all hope is lost, but talk about your inflexible, inadaptible bunch of asshats in the NE. I'm living in NE Ohio now, and I think Akron is doing better than most communities up here at moving on from their staple (rubber) that will never come back. Akron's still at the forefront of polymer research and the city seems to be attracting a lot of biomedical firms (many are Israeli).
Still, the University is increasingly the Biggest Thing in Town.
Cincinnati's a wreck. Columbus is the only part of the state that seems to be able to adjust itself to the prevailing economy.
Warren is lovely in the early spring.
The grass is gray and the cars are held together with duct tape.
Suicide is in the air.
