Yesterday's Candidate, Yesterday's Policies
You'd never know it from the concussive waves of Hillary Hype, but former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) is, at the moment, the Democrats' most formidable presidential candidate. A recent Newsweek poll gave him the highest favorability ratings of any Democrat in the country, with 49% liking him and 24% disliking him. Hillary's favorability was 53%, but her unfavorability was a steep 42%, and no other Democrats came close. Two weeks ago, a poll of Iowa Democrats showed Edwards leading Clinton 30-26, and lapping the rest of the field.
What's Edwards going to do with this popularity? This crap.
Ex-Sen. John Edwards (D-NC), evolving his pitch ahead of an anticipated presidential run in 2008, will propose to cut poverty by a third in 10 years, eliminate it in 30, and put in its place a "Working Society " where Americans are rewarded for hard work with a livable safety net of health and welfare incentives.
…
A copy of his speech distributed to reporters and embragoed until this morning shows that Edwards proposes to "radically overhaul" the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development; to create 1 million "stepping stone" jobs over the next five years, to raise the minimum wage, and to refocus the American education system."I propose a great national goal, because Americans believe in achieving great things," Edwards plans to say. "Like JFK challenging America to land a man on the moon, a national goal of eradicating poverty will sharpen our focus, marshal our resources and at the end of the day, bring out our best."
Edwards proposes one semi-new idea, housing vouchers that would replace much of the role of HUD. (Senator, I'm Fannie Mae. Have we met?) Pretty thin gruel if he's going after the Libertarian Democrat vote.

Shoot. He'll never win without the Lib Dems behind him.
Wait a minute... where's Al Sharpton in all those polls?
Theory: People don't know the difference between John Edward the Psychic and John Edwards the Senator.
Test Methodology: Why, Google "John Edwards", of course.
Test Results: Number one listing for "John Edwards"? "John Edward", natch.
Conclusion: The people want a psychic president.
Of course, these pre-race numbers are ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS!!!!! As joe and I--in a rare display of unity--have predicted, it's going to be an all-Warner race. Not cause I want it to be, but because the spirits of your dead relatives have told me so.
Pretty thin gruel if he's going after the Libertarian Democrat vote.
(holds up bowl)
Please sir, may I have some more?
Raising the minimum wage is great for the unions, whose scales are based on multiples of the minimum wage, and horrible for people whose labor ain't worth the new minimum wage rate.
If this program were enacted, the results would be as disastrous for the low-talent and low-ability as the Great Society program was.
John Edwards is an ambulance-chasing, dead-baby-channeling tort lawyer clown. Jeb Bush could probably even beat him.
If this is the best the Democrats have to offer, settle in for four more years of Republican rule.
"If this is the best the Democrats have to offer, settle in for four more years of Republican rule."
Fortunately the Dems still have Warner, Bayh and Clark. Just as long as they avoid the temptation to run screaming for the left...
I still get depressed every time I read or hear a journalist actually reporting a candidate promising returns after he or she is out of office. I guess Bullshit Detection 101 isn't offered in journalism school.
will propose to cut poverty by a third in 10 years
The poverty line is about $12K. This means in 2018 the poverty line will be $8K.
Americans are rewarded for hard work with a livable safety net of health and welfare incentives.
Americans get those now WITHOUT hard work. WTF?
create 1 million "stepping stone" jobs over the next five years
Sounds like landscaping.
to raise the minimum wage
...as an issue
and to refocus the American education system
suggesting that its current focus isn't education, or that its future focus won't be education.
a national goal of eradicating poverty
Poor Mexican migrants will be eradicated.
And he conveniently sets the measuring dates at a time when he can't be in office. Shit, I'll bet even Bill Clinton votes for him in the primaries.
I don't think the poll is right. This is the first time I've heard the guys name in over a year.
That's why he has such low negatives. Remind people of his courtroom antics, and he's toast.
"Remind people of his courtroom antics, and he's toast."
The only people I've ever heard of being alienated by Edwards' courtroom behavior are people who wouldn't vote for him anyway.
"Like JFK challenging America to land a man on the moon, a national goal of eradicating poverty will sharpen our focus, marshal our resources and at the end of the day, bring out our best."
Frankly, I think a government program aimed at going to the moon would have a better chance of eradicating proverty than a government program aimed at eradicating poverty.
Conquering the Milky Way galaxy will sharpen our focus, marshal our resources and at the end of the day, bring out our best.
Let's do it!
InTrade's 2008 elections futures market has Clinton at 44% and Edwards 7%. Looks like that poll is being taken with a large block of salt.
"Like JFK . . . ."
Got that, everybody? "Like JFK!" Why, I'm JUST like JFK! Even look like him, a little, eh? And YOU like JFK, too, don't you! So we agree!
Already bringing America together.
People don't know the difference between John Edward the Psychic and John Edwards the Senator.
Both have the style of a carnival barker, morals of a used car salesman and terrible regional accents. I'm afraid I can't see much of a difference either.
Wait, didn't we eliminate poverty with the Great Society programs back in the 60's? Wasn't the 70's a decade of economic growth, low crime and civic renewal? What's left to fix?
Quick fix: If you want to eliminate poverty, let the market work.
Off track, but where can I sign a petition to shut down the U.N.?
Off track, but where can I sign a petition to shut down the U.N.?
In John Bolton's office.
Won't even Joe Sixpack be suspicious the "Working Society" is going backward from the "Great Society"?
Progress would be thick steaks on every grill, 3 SUV's in every garage, a plasma screen TV and a barcolounger covered in genuine Nauga Hide.
You people ask who is John Edwards? He's got a full 8 years in the Senate, good looks, a few million bucks, and a slick public presentation. This should seem like a thin resume to all involved. It's sad that John Kerry picked him to run for VP, and sad that people don't see through how he talks to us like we're a jury. He's a southern Democrat only in the bizarro world.
And a pony
No, progress would be a barcalounger covered in genuine Hillary hide.
...covered in genuine Hillary hide.
eeeewwwww
barcolounger covered in genuine Nauga Hide.
I ask you, how many Naugas have to die so that we can end poverty?
"Progress would be thick steaks on every grill, 3 SUV's in every garage, a plasma screen TV and a barcolounger covered in genuine Nauga Hide."
Gonna have to nix that last one. All of the Naugas were hunted to extinction sometime in the early 1970's.
I ask you, how many Naugas have to die so that we can end poverty?
Yes, it's better to shear polys for their ester.
As many Naugas as Corinthians that died to make this rich, Corinthian leather.
Off track, but where can I sign a petition to shut down the U.N.?
"In John Bolton's office."
You know, every time Bolton makes wild threats again the UN (such as saying "If the UN Secretariat building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference"), I have to resist posting it here for purposes of mocking all the people who said they wouldn't vote for Badnarik because he wasn't a "serious candidate" because he made a joke about blowing up the UN building.
At last! We've found our candidate for 2008!
The one I'd keep your eye on is Barack Obama - even though he's a Senator, and not a Governor, he's got a large following already among Democrats, particularly those who are terrified at the prospect of a Rice candidacy.
Meh. It's not as if ANY of them are going to make a huge difference. The WoD will continue unabated, the French will still hate us, and bin Laden will continue to taunt us mercilessly, while sending boys out to murder and maim us.
...mocking all the people who said they wouldn't vote for Badnarik because he wasn't a "serious candidate" because he made a joke about blowing up the UN building.
That's not why I didn't vote for him. I didn't vote for him because, at the end of the day, he's a juvenile crank. Nobody takes a tax cheat who refuses to have a drivers license seriously.
Besides, I liked Russo.
"If the UN Secretariat building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference"
How is that a threat? Seems more a statement of fact to me.
The one I'd keep your eye on is Barack Obama
At least Obama's got the sense to say that the Dems should stop trying to beat up conservatives on procedural issues and go win some elections.
Edward's self-important "Two Americas" speech always seemed like a call for more welfare reform to me.
"I ask you, how many Naugas have to die so that we can end poverty?"
What about all those steaks on all those grills?
Ending poverty is a grisly business.
"Like JFK . . ."
Where's Lloyd Bentsen when we need him?
"What about all those steaks on all those grills?"
To say nothing of all these muthafuckin' snakes on this muthafuckin' plane.
I thought we'd figured out that Senators make lousy Presidential candidates.
You need to be a governor, a VP, or the incumbent.
"a "Working Society " where Americans are rewarded for hard work with a livable safety net of health and welfare incentives"
This isn't Russia. Is this Russia? This isn't Russia.
From the linked article:
Even when he (Edwards) travels to raise money for Democrats, he often meets privately with poor families
Yeah, they are the people who shine his shoes, change his sheets, and wash his Land Rover.
More of the same from a lawyer even lawyers can despise.
Please, DNC, don't make me vote for Condoleeza "never met a civil liberty I couldn't rationalize out of existence" Rice!!!
Actually, Edwards is the only candidate whom I don't think is an asshole just from listening to them. He was on the Daily Show a few months back and he impressed me again with his quick wit and approrpriate demeanor.
Yeah, it's personality, not policy, but I have hopes that the first is more basic, and will help override foolish choices in the second.
Bayh is the closest Dem to something I could vote for. I'd think he'd be a reasonable candidate from an electability standpoint, too.
1. John Warner is running for Prez? Hell he is older than Reagan was post-Alzheimers. He was like 7 Elizabeth Taylor husbands ago and he was 60 then.
2. John Edwards only served 6 years on the Senate. His VP run had great timing for his Senate retirement.
No, progress would be a barcalounger covered in genuine Hillary hide.

Ahahahahahahahahaha! Well it would be a great start, anyway. 🙂
showed Edwards leading Clinton 30-26, and lapping the rest of the field
Pssst. Over here. I got one showing Edwards lapping Hillary!
>Bleeeeeargh<
This just went on my list of Things I'd Run a Mile to Avoid Seeing.
And my list of Mental Images That Will Make Me Afraid to Sleep.
I'd strongly question those poll numbers. Rasmussen has Hillary with 38% against and 27% for. Rasmussen has very accurate compared to actual election results, so I'd go with them.
"...Edwards proposes to ...create 1 million "stepping stone" jobs over the next five years, [and] to raise the minimum wage...."
That sounds like he's about to make a tender offer for McDonald's.
Not John Warner, but another fine Virginian, Mark Warner, ex-gov of Virginia.
Now think about the last time a non-southern govenor won an election for the dems. There ya go.
Mark Warner in 08 baby.
No, progress would be a barcalounger covered in genuine Hillary hide.

......
This attitude is beneath those of us choosing to reside in the Temple of the Vestals.
Frankly, I think a government program aimed at going to the moon would have a better chance of eradicating proverty than a government program aimed at eradicating poverty.
Then for his second term, Edwards can promise to eradicate poverty on the moon.
Did you say polls?
"A new Iowa Poll conducted for The Des Moines Register shows that Edwards, the runner-up in the Iowa Democratic caucuses two years ago and a frequent visitor to the state since then, is the choice of 30 percent of Iowans who say they are likely to take part in the January 2008 caucuses. U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York follows on Edwards' heels with 26 percent in the Iowa Poll."
In a netroots poll of activist Democrats John Edwards has a favorable of 86% and unfavorable of 9%.
Wesley Clarke has 66 and 18, Hillary at 65 and 33 and Warner has 35 and 8.
Pew: "Among possible Democratic candidates, former Sen. John Edwards has the greatest crossover appeal. He is viewed favorably by 85% of Democratic voters who can rate him, 68% of independents, and 48% of Republicans. Sen. Joe Biden is viewed favorably by 42% of Republicans who are familiar with him, but only 56% of Democrats. Fewer than half of registered voters knew Biden well enough to give a rating.
"By comparison, Sens. Hillary Clinton and John Kerry remain highly polarizing figures. Democratic voters view Kerry favorably by roughly four-to-one, while Republicans view him unfavorably by the same margin and independents are divided (49% favorable, 51% unfavorable among those able to give a rating). Sen. Clinton receives similar ratings, though somewhat higher than Kerry among independents."
"Of Democrats, Edwards was the strongest potential 2008 candidate among Republicans and independents. He was thought of favorably by 68 percent of independents and 48 percent of Republicans. Eighty-five percent of Democrats had a favorable view of Edwards, who had the highest favorability score of any of the Democrats tested -- including former president Bill Clinton. Edwards allies are likely to circulate the poll results among the chattering class over the next few days to try and cement the idea that he is the only Democratic candidate that can win back the centrist voters who gave Bush two terms in the White House."
Gallup Poll of Democrats and Democratic leaners:
Hillary Rodham Clinton 36
Al Gore 16
John Edwards 12
John Kerry 11
Wesley Clark 4
Joe Biden 4
Russ Feingold 3
Mark Warner 2
Cook Poll:
Hillary Clinton 31
Al Gore 18
John Kerry 14
John Edwards 11
Joe Biden 4
Mark Warner 3
Wesley Clark 3
In a head to head in a WNBC/Marist Poll matchup against Giuliani, McCain and Condi Rice -
Edwards runs -3, -6, and +9 with unsures at 9, 12 and 7.

The only Democrat that intrigues me is Feingold, because he's opposed to Iraq and is the ONLY senator to vote down the Patriot Acts. For the Republicans, I'm personally rooting for Chuck Hagel.
