Republicans for Soros

Former FEC Commissioner Bradley Smith, now blogging over at RedState, attacks a Republican leadership so deathly afraid of George Soros that it is desperate to adopt his policy recommendations:

Unfortunately, leading Republicans Party strategists have decided that the GOP can gain the upper hand in elections by abandoning the principles of freedom and limited government, and trying to beat Democrats by silencing them through campaign finance regulation. Call it "527 Fever," a beltway disease that afflicts Republicans, and whose most notable symptom is a paranoid fear of George Soros and free speech.

Bradley Smith lambasted "McCain's War on Political Speech" in Reason's December issue.

A nice piece wrapped in a bunch of disingenuous bullshit, that piece is. Some of it, I expect, is just red meat for the RedState crowd, although Smith may actually believe it. No media outlet that allows Chris Matthews on their air can be fairly described as "tilting left," let alone "overwhelmingly liberal."

I haven't been following the career of Chris Matthews as closely as maybe I should be (ha ha), but are some people considering him a right-winger now? Wasn't he moaning about the neo-cons taking over the last time I heard about him? I realize he isn't some "The Nation"-worshipping Bolshevik, but Matthews is a committed Democrat, isn't he, service with Tip O'Neill being the high point of his career and all that?

Unfortunately, the Republican Party abandoned the "limited government and freedom" philosophy a while ago. I think that this further proves that the Republicans in power do not care about the core beliefs of the party any more. The only thing the Republican politicians and strategists care about these days is how to stay in power.

During a profit break a commercial aired that blasted Cindy Sheehan (who is considering running against Diane Feinstein) for answering any and every question in politics with an emotional plea for the US to leave Iraq. The profit break ended with this statement: "sponsered by George Soros and former friends of Howard Dean". If that's for real, and I think is, Soros is spending some of his money pruning the Democratic party tree of rotten fruit.

I don't think they've never really followed that philosophy. The "limited government" part has always only been relative to the Democrats' "more government is better" philosophy.

Like the Democrats, the Republicans have always approved of obscene wastes of money and limited personal freedom, just on different issues.

The only thing the Republican politicians and strategists care about these days is how to stay in power.

That is true of any politicians who are "in power." Which is why the very idea of a Libertarian Party is foolish; even if its candidates win elections, the things necessary to remain in power will corrupt them. The only hope now is divided govt, which is quite difficult to maintain for long periods of time.
