Rather's Frequency Goes Dead…

Stop the presses and start thinking about watching The CBS Evening News again, Dan "What's the Frequency, Kenneth"; "Courage!"; "Sweater Vest"; "Memo Gate" Rather is calling its quits:

"I have decided to leave the CBS Evening News on March 9, 2005," Rather said in a statement. "I have been lucky and blessed over these years to have what is, to me, the best job in the world and to have it at CBS News."

dead elvis, I used the term "fraud" broadly to refer to Murrow's and Cronkite's positions as Top Men who filtered the era's conventional wisdom to the known world, a job that seems as bizarre as sideshow geekery in our own era. I have no bill of particulars, though I suspect an entrepid historian could catch Murrow on occasion inflating his role in McCarthy's downfall to the point where it escapes the gravitational pull of strict truthfulness. As for Cronkite, he was the news when I was a youngster, and I'd sooner blow my nose with a page from the Bible than believe he was ever wrong about anything.

David T is undoubtedly accurate in assessing my (or at least my career achievements') importance relative to Murrow and Cronkite. I could make the argument that, as Dan Rather has shown us, the importance one could attain in the long era of Murrow and Cronkite is impossible today, but that would churlishly ignore the heights both men attained in an era when opportunity was severely limited. So I'll just note that I'd rather be me in my era than them in theirs.
