Kicking the Beaneater When He's Down

Grieving Boston Red Sox fans may want to know that Bill "Between the Legs" Buckner has been able to send his kid through college with money from autographing images of that fatal play in 1986. Most of the buyers are New York fans, obviously. (Link via Doug Pappas' excellent Business of Baseball weblog.)

They never would have gotten to the Series without Buckner.

    They never...sniff.

Beaneater? Come on, you smarty pants guys at Reason should know that "Bean" references to Boston are only used by people outside of Boston and/or tourists...It's like calling San Francisco "frisco."

  3. Douglas Fletcher   22 years ago

Yeah, since they keep sending Kennedy's to Congress they ought to be known as bullshit eaters.

  4. Douglas Fletcher   22 years ago

I like 'Frisco' myself but it sounds terrible when pronounced with a lisp.

  5. Clement Vallandigham   22 years ago

Good point, Fletch, but technically if they're sending Kennedys to congress then they're bullshit flingers, or at least exporters.

  6. Matt Welch   22 years ago

I use "Frisco" any chance I can, personally. Also, "Beaneaters" used to be the name of the Boston nine back in the day, and it certainly has a friendlier ring than "masshole."

  7. Jean Bart   22 years ago

Actually, Boston's original baseball team were called the "Beaneaters." Formed in 1871, and originally known as the Boston Redstockings, sometime prior to the end of the 19th century they became known as the "Beaneaters." In the early 20th century they changed their names again to the Braves, who made history in 1914 by going from last to first in about a month and a half, and then trouncing the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. In the early 1950s they moved to Milwaukee, and then a decade later moved to as you might have guessed Atlanta. The Atlanta Braves, in all of their manifestations, are the oldest continuous professional sports franchise in US history.

Don't forget the guy who hit the grounder: Mookie Wilson.

I have nothing to contribute here; I just like saying, "Mookie"...

Matt Welch links to Doug Pappas twice in one day! What next, a SKIN reference?

I think there's been a lot of confusion here about the name Beaneater. First of all, it's not a guy who jacked up a play-off game nor a perjorative for those Kennedy-voting, tax-raising, big-digging, nasty-to-the-point-of-making-New-Yorkers-seem-friendly, Bostonians.

The name refers to a late-70's thru mid-80's rocker named Pat Beaneater, who ended up "Hardening Her Heart" with massive doses of fatty foods.

Not enough to do today, I guess - I've got no other excuse for this behavior.

  11. Jimmy Antley   22 years ago

Yes, Matt, I've heard the term "masshole" a lot. It's a good one 😉

Cincinatti's Reds (Red Stockings) started playing pro ball in 1869, the first avowed pro team.

  13. Argyles   22 years ago

The Red Stockings folded soon after their famous winning streak; a subsequent Cincinnati club was bounced out of the (early) National League for the heinous crimes of selling alcohol at their home games and hosting Sunday baseball, and Cincinnati did not rejoin the NL until a few years later. Next time you have a beer at a Sunday ballgame, think about that!

  14. david f   22 years ago

    yeah, but Argyles,

    it's CINCINNATI....

next time i have to view maplethorpe, i'll think about cincy, too.

with the exception of the highschool Saint X swimming team, what else is there?

    🙂
