Maggie of Arc Reaches Out
Young French rabble-rouser Sabine Herold has a new message in English for her international fans. An excerpt:
After decades of growing central state control, France is now facing one of the greatest challenge of its History : choosing between the road to freedom or the road to serfdom, as Hayek once wrote.25 per cent of the active population, between 20 and 60 years old, is working in the public sector. An average 55 per cent of our gross domestic product is captured and controlled by state administration. Our labor laws are so unfair and complicated that it is hard to tell if anyone in the country keeps track of their global purposes. We are suffering from a corrupted politician class, unable and unwilling to order the necessary change to a self-growing administration, as most of them are originally civil servants. Citizens of France lost most of their respect for these politicians, too skilled to travel through labyrinths of a nightmarish administration. Whether they claim to be politically right or left sided, their enduring incompetence allowed the far right extremist leader, Mr. Le Pen, to reach the last turn of our Presidential election, in may 2002, which is a shame, for all of us.

Sabine is Jean D'Arc reincarnate, folks! Keep an her.
Er, on her ideas! Her ideas! (Not her chest.)
Somebody needs to put this babe on a poster.
Somebody needs to put this babe on a 4-post bed.
It never ceases to amaze me how sexist some of the posters (excuse me) commentators on this site are. I know libertarianism doesn?t necessarily imply sexism, but then maybe some of these anonymous writers are just drive-by hitters who know nothing about libertarianism, and simply stop by to learn.
Well, fine. We?ll forgive you your sexism.
Let me ask you, if Sabino were a male, would you have written about ?beds,? too? Sabine may be a female, but can?t you keep your mind on what she has to impart (excuse me) what she has to say?
We finally have someone here who might be able to introduce some concepts of liberty in an otherwise very statist society, and all you can think of is SEX?
Please grow up, will you?
I agree. You sexist pig-fascists shut your filthy mouths! Eeet is fine to appreciate zee beauty, but hold zee foul tongue, eh?
Where's the conflict? We find her ideas and presence interesting. We also like her tits.
Sex and freedom fit together like...well, never mind.
HOT
"It never ceases to amaze me how sexist some of the posters (excuse me) commentators on this site are."
I'll give you a two-fer: Au moins, elle se rase.
Everyone knows that men are pigs. I believe the
real problem is that the woman is both good
looking and working for a Serious Cause. It would
be far more preferable that she be plain, ugly
even, so as not to detract from the Cause.
Oh, yeah, I noticed she shaves. She's French, non?
What's up with that? Could she in fact be a CIA
plant?
CIA plants don't shave. You ought to know that, jDavid.
Lonewacko, comment vous savez elle rase "l??" La connaissez-vous QUE bon?
Democracy! Whiskey! SEXY!
Speaking for myself only. Our culture is polluted with attractive women. You can't surf a TV channel, website, or magazine without being visually accosted by a bevy of sluts on parade. To exist in our culture is to become immune to such imagery. Sabine's physical charms were able to affect me only because her ideas affected me first. That is, I would surely have taken no notice of her, were she not such a (dare I say) passionate champion of liberty. Truth be told, I actually find her to be a bit too petit for my taste but c'est la vie, with a cause like that she is Aitch-Oh-Tee HOT.
I'd like to tie her up, face fuck her and then cum on her tits.
Keep this up, and I'll only post links to 50-something libertarian men who don't bathe.
Who needs to surf for pornography when we can get it right here from The Frog himself.
Actually, The Frog makes sure you get to "see" it, whether you wanted to surf for it or not.
(OK, Frog, we reacted to your trolling. Happy? Now go back and play in the gutter.)
Hey, Warren -- like you, I also surf TV channels, websites, or magazines and love being visually accosted by a bevy of beauties on parade.
Ain't it great to be male?
I'm with Warren. I'm sure Ayn Rand was a hottie back in the day.
Finally a French web site worth using
http://www.babelfish.altavista.com/ for.
> I'm sure Ayn Rand was a hottie back in the day.
Uhhh...yeah. Don't ever say that again. Ever.
Babbling Fish, Ayn Rand was indeed a hottie back then.
Didn't you see her USPO stamp?
oh, no. Ayn Rand, definitely not hot.
au chaque'un son gout
De gustibus non est disputandum
OK. Will you settle for the North Carolina Calendar Girls then?
Oh no, LPN is pimping libertarian wimmin again.
Yeah, that's because they're so few and far between!
"Let me ask you, if Sabino were a male, would you have written about ?beds,? too?"
Well, since I am neither a heterosexual woman, nor a gay male, I would have to say no.
"Sabine may be a female, but can?t you keep your mind on what she has to impart (excuse me) what she has to say?"
Why should I? She's a single male libertarian's ultimate fantasy. All that and brains too.
And like most libertarians, I don't have a bug up my ass about sexuality like the rest of Western society be it run by he bible-beaters on the right or the militant feminists on the left who dream of total androgyny.
Jo Saphone, take off your orange Anti-Sex League sash (TM 1948, George Orwell), and get a libido.
"> I'm sure Ayn Rand was a hottie back in the day.
Uhhh...yeah. Don't ever say that again. Ever."
I don't know... I saw pictures of Ms Rosenbaum when she was in her 20s. She wasn't a Sabine, but she wasn't bad looking.
Mark, I didn't know Ayn was Jewish! Was she?
"I saw pictures of Ms Rosenbaum when she was in her 20s. She wasn't a Sabine, but she wasn't bad looking."
OK, but was she GOOD-looking?
(Why do we always have to use a negative benchmark to describe things?)
Aye carumba, this blog's gone to hell.
How about a 'Girls of Reason' calendar? Or at least a swimsuit issue?
F?r Sabine! (Fandrawings)
CharlesWT, get ready for a big lawsuit!
Oh yes, Ayn Rand was atheist, but she came from a Russian Jewish family.
I got a feeling that old Ludwig was just jealous. How many novels did he write above and beyond his stuffy economic treatises?
If his novels were as poorly written as Atlas Shrugged, I don't think he would've cared to write them.
http://www.economist.com/opinion/displaystory.cfm?story_id=1795852
"An industry driven by sexual instinct will always thrive"
http://www.shirky.com/writings/group_enemy.html
"They couldn't defend themselves against their own users"
Mises was Jewish too, as was Rothbard, Nozick, Friedman...
Wait a second. I'm getting the feeling that this whole libertarian thing is just another offshoot of the Elders of Zion conspiracy...
No, Misha, it isn't.
I'm not Jewish and neither are many libertarian thinkers (like Rockwell, LeFevre, Nolan, etc. -- I'm sure you can come up with many examples on your own.)
However, Jewish genes tend to have a liberty tropism, and tend to foster inventiveness and creativity bordering on genius. Think of how many solutions to current human problems we could've had today, if some of those genes hadn't been destroyed at German concentration camps.
The world is but the poorer for it.
Mark, if today's institutions of higher learning used Ludwig von Mises "stuffy economic treatises" as recommended textbooks instead of the stuffy economic treatises they are using right now, then we probably would not be in the economic messes we are in today.
Morris, my comments were decidedly tongue-in-cheek. I'm Jewish and I'm always amused when right-wing anti-semites (like those on LibertyForum.com) accuse Jews of being nothing more than godless communists, whereas left-wing anti-semites (like Marx, in his On the Jewish Question) accuse Jews of being nothing more than greedy capitalists.
Although I have to disagree with your expressed belief in a "Jewish gene". I think success in life has more to do with cultural and social institutions than biology.
Wait a second. I'm getting the feeling that this whole libertarian thing is just another offshoot of the Elders of Zion conspiracy...
The neocons, the libertarians, the communists, those Jews sure do get around. Or perhaps it's just that Jews have a long history of being well-represented in the Western intelligentsia.
Jews have a long history of representing themselves well in the Western intelligentsia.
And rightfully so. If they don't do it, nobody will. They've been persecuted long enough.
Surprise! Sabine Herold is Jewish!
Right on, Sabine! Hope you Biz hundert azoi ve tsvantsik.
Ayn Rand was most definitely an atheist.
Freud was an atheist as well. And though Einstein wasn't, he wasn't a believer in Judaism either. Yet like Rand, all three can be properly referred to as "Jewish", given that the term refers as much to an ethnic identity as it does to a faith.
An interesting anecdote about Rand: One time when she was at a dinner party discussing her books and her philosophy, she got into a heated argument with Ludwig von Mises, who claimed that Atlas Shrugged was unreadable and her philosophy incoherent. Rand cried out something along the lines of "You think I'm just a poor, ignorant little Jewish girl!" Mises retorted, "That's exactly what you are!"
My dear son,
You have now left the safety of the house in which you were born in order to achieve your life?s goals, and to become whatever it is you seek.
You are entering a new world in which you will certainly be successful, because you have knowledge. As jews, study has always been our religious duty. YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO ADAPT TO OTHERS AND TO SENSE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THINGS THAT SEEM DIVERSE.
But if you feel you have power, you are mistaken. If you feel you have the right to put yourself ahead of others, because you think you know more than they do, then you are wrong. Be true to who you are. Discover your core essence. Don?t try to be something you?re not.
About the many people whom you will meet, know this: All they do is struggle to find a kind of security. They?re just people, like you. Therefore, you must not judge them on the basis of appearance or hearsay.
Never allow yourself to be driven into the chimera of conceit. Conceit is the greatest of errors; it is the source of all other errors.
Never give up on your beliefs. If your life becomes a struggle for acceptance, you?ll always be unhappy.
Our life is nothing but a boat, adrift on water, balance by permanent uncertainty. Your believe system may not be perfect, but it is a well-built boat that can stay balanced and carry you to the other shore.
Trust no one. Examine all things yourself. Do not join with power. Despise all rank. Do not be ostentatious with what is yours. Owning possessions and property ultimately comes to nothing. Possessions and property can be consumed by fire, swept away by flood, taken away by thieves ? both private and official.
The only way to find meaning in your life, your only chance in life, would be to account for it. Do not undertake what you do not know; this causes anxiety which can make you ill. Exercise discipline. Try to photograph what?s beautiful in life.
With all my love,
-- Your father
Okay, I don't find her particularly attractive. But if she can break the power of the French union/corporation/government alliance and kick off a wave of market reforms, I hope she bears me many children.

a 'Girls of Reason' calendar?
Who would volunteer? You? Please, no! Whatever you do, keep your clothes on. Please!
Please don't be discouraged, Mark. If you truly wish to look into the logic and sanity Ludwig von Mises left to the world, many abridgments, encapsulations, condensations, simplifications, and summaries abound.
Here's a good place to start:
http://www.mises.org/default.asp
(peruse the side bars on either side of that page)
Yours in liberty.
Rose.
The trivial stuff first. von Mises was actually a quarter Jewish ethnically but where was he religiously? Hayek wasn't Jewish but was he an Atheist?
OK, I admit, Sabine Herold certainly "rouses my rabble" as well, she is quite "hot"(that used to sound funny to me but in the mid-70's we said "foxy" so I guess I should be glad for progress) but it's her advocies that are important. I know, I know, shes not right on the war but still, she is a very hopeful phenomenon for France.
Sonnenschein, Thank you for sharing your message to your son. It's very beautiful. Although I don't concurr with every point of advice you give, I can relate as I am the father of two college students myself, and although, unlike yourself, we have no religious background or believe that has told us to do so; we value study and learning very highly as well. Your son is quite fortunate to have you for his father.
Rose,
Thank you very much for sharing the von Mises link. It's fascinating.
You're welcome, Rick. Glad I could help. We're all learning. Hope it never ends.
"Fosler notes that changing labor rules are allowing more part-timers and contract workers to find jobs. That has made the economy more flexible, lifting consumer sentiment and demand and raising per capita incomes. Indeed, in the second half of the 1990s, the number of hours worked grew almost as fast in Europe as in the U.S.
"Fosler also stresses the continuing gains as companies take full advantage of the single-currency market. Moreover, as the euro zone expands, it's bringing in countries with both low wages and high-quality workers, making them internationally competitive."
"Fosler notes that changing labor rules are allowing more part-timers and contract workers to find jobs."
...are a good trend. But the French economy is still not above critique.
T. Hartin,
Well, there is the article already posted above for some evidence about the French economy. As to reforms, keep in mind France has privatized much its state-owned industries (e.g., telecommunications, oil, etc.), national taxes have been lowered since 1995 on at least two occassions, and of course pension-reform is now underway. Of course the agricultural sector has not seen reform; but then again, with the 2002 Farm Bill, whatever reform had occurred in the US rolled-back to pre-1996 levels.
Nutball = someone how says that there is no freedom of speech or protest in France, Sabine that is, yet who speaks to crowds in the thousands. Sabine said a lot of things in the previous article which was posted here which were either untrue, or rather cynical twistings of the truth.
BTW, no one said that the French economy is not above critique; it is also not marked by the second coming of the apocalypse either. The difference here is between rational criticism of France vs. outright ignorant frog bashing, and T. Hartin is a perfect example of the latter.
21 year olds tend to spout hyperbole. Read some the comments here...
But so what. It is still cool that there is a growing French libertarian movement. How many 21 year olds in the US can quote Hayek? She is a real contrarian, which is admirable for someone her age.
Hopefully she expands her reading to other authors, but it is clear she is a friend of liberty and I think that is a good thing.
Mark, if today's institutions of higher learning used Ludwig von Mises "stuffy economic treatises" as recommended textbooks instead of the stuffy economic treatises they are using right now, then we probably would not be in the economic messes we are in today.
Absolutely.
Here -- save you the trouble, Robert Nabors (at July 7, 2003 10:58 AM)
http://www.beloved-freedom.com/
But you could've done it yourself, if you'd just looked in the upper right-hand corner of her (French) screen.
Yes, folks, she also communicates to us Brits -- in English. And we love her for it.
I think its clear that Herold is more of a kin to a Carnival sideshow who knows nothing but self-promotion rather than a friend of liberty.
Wow! Have you seen CATALARCHY.NET?
Finally! A blog where we don't have to press our noses against the screen in a perennial squint-fest.
Great site, Jonathan! Well done. (Well-chosen colors, too.)
http://www.catallarchy.net/blog/
Congrats! I decidedly bookmarked this one.
yeah she is a spotlight hogging sideshow. especially since there are SO MANY other French libertarians....
We think it is clear that Croesus is more of a kin to the Troller Troopers on this site, who know of nothing but chest-beating, rather than being a friend of liberty.
(For Pete's sake, give the gal a chance! In your own fatherland at that, Croesus!)
Why don't you lie down and take it like a fag, Matt Felchy-Squelchy.
"Matt Felch" is more succint. "Matt Felcy-Squelchy " is just stupid, you anonymous moron.
i find it quite fe(l)tching! or felcying 😀 felicitous?
Oh my god....
Time to learn some french. It seems the majority of women of this side of the Atlantic think that you must choose between a brain and beauty.
This french woman gives you both.
*hides from the vicious fem-nazi attack*
From what I can decipher, she seems to have some great ideas, though I need to get a french language pack or something, because I'm getting over 50 japanese symbols in that page...

If she is the new Joan d'Arc, does this mean she will soon be convicted of heresy and burnt alive?
Somehow, I think calling her the new Joan d'Arc is a bit much; after all, the English haven't been rampaging across France for the past century, killing every peasant they could get their hands on, burning crops, and raising cities and towns. And whether anyone wants to admit it, France has a very dynamic and successful economy, one which despite many predictions recovered from the devastation of WWII (same for Germany as well); and reforms of that economy have been underway for at least a decade (long before Herold started rabble-rousing). France, like any country, can be an easy target if one focuses on merely its negative aspects; as one could do with the US if you were to rant about say the smoking laws here, or the paranoia over trace amounts of so-called carcinogens found in people.
Anyway, Herold proved herself to be a nutball in the last article posted here. Just because someone spouts Hayak doesn't mean that they are intelligent or sane.
BTW, Rand was ugly in youth and old age; and she couldn't write her way out of a cardboard box.
"And whether anyone wants to admit it, France has a very dynamic and successful economy, one which despite many predictions recovered from the devastation of WWII (same for Germany as well); and reforms of that economy have been underway for at least a decade (long before Herold started rabble-rousing)"
Dynamic and successful compared to what? Certainly not the US and UK, which have outperformed the French economy for quite a few years now. Perhps you could also let us know which direction the immigration flow, of both people and businesses, is going, as between France and the US or UK.
Reforms? Please enlighten. Every time I read about French politics, they are digging the same hole deeper and deeper with more entitlements and regulations. These are not the kind of "reforms" that are likely to impress me.
France has a higher productivity rate than the US (see bottom chart, lower right).
>>France has a higher productivity rate than the US (see bottom chart, lower right).
Notice PER HOUR WORKED in your chart. How many hours/year does the French Government allow workers to produce? Also, what is the US productivity versus France for 1950-2003?
