Tonight on The Independents: Penn Jillette! Benghazi! NSA! Nick Gillespie!

So big he couldn't fit in the picture. |||Tonight's live episode of Fox Business Network's The Independents, which airs at 9 pm ET and then repeats again at midnight, should be a doozy. First up will be famed entertainer, bullshit-detector, and all-around awesome libertarian Penn Jillette, who will talk about whether the latest New York Times reporting on Benghazi changes the free-speech ramifications of the case. He'll also riff on retail recreational weed going legal this week, and whatever else the hell Penn Jillette wants to talk about.

The noted illusionist. |||Next there'll be talk about France's constitutional court approving President Francois Hollande's bright idea about taxing millionaires 75 percent, then a left-right panel of Democratic Party strategist Julie Roginsky Mediaite lacerator Noah Rothman duke it out over dueling NSA court rulings and the cutoff of long-term federal unemployment benefits. Somewhere in there will be a discussion of Russia's pre-Olympics suicide bomb attacks, and then wrapping it all up a neat bow will be none other than Nick Gillespie.

Sounds like fun, right? Send your Twitter reviews to @IndependentsFBN (#independents) and the best ones will be used on air.

    Sounds like a great lineup. Will you be back to hosting, Mr. Welch?

  • Matt Welch||

    Yes, I was on vacation last week.

  • Agammamon||

    Yeah, grueling gig man, only on a little while and you need a break!

    Also - you guys need to do a Wikipedia page.

    Well, that fixed it. Can someone else speak now?

  • Austrian Anarchy||

    OK, I take it back. That Commie gal is making my head explode already.

  • Agammamon||

    Jeez man, first you want him to talk so he does then you complain that he's talking so he let' someone else then you complain that someone else is talking.

  • Austrian Anarchy||

    Thanks for summing that up.

    I think our Tony has migrated over to Slate. From the Libertarians Fail At Gay Rights article:

    Tony 26 minutes ago
    Libertarians are not to be taken seriously for many reasons, one important one being that they're almost entirely composed of white males. Libertarians, being suckers for a simplistic attitude that everything is answerable by appealing to "logic"--and the simpler the better--don't appreciate this as a hindrance to their worldview as a workable philosophy. But if only a scrappy band of pale-faced straight boys and men have access to Total Logic, it should go without saying that their conception of logic is flawed. Or else it must inherently incorporate racist, sexist, and homophobic claims as truth. Ask them why nearly all minorities vote for Democrats, and see if you can get a coherent response that isn't inherently bigoted. You can't, and they probably won't even try.

    As a man of Scotch-Irish descent, I am honored that, following generations of struggle against Anglo-Saxon autocrats and rentiers, Gallic utopianism, and Nordic eugenics, I'm now considered a white person on equal footing with all the descendants of the people who conquered and murdered my ancestors. Warms the heart.

    I'd like to know when Europeans who killed each other for two millennia lost their religious and cultural identities in the eyes of the goofy left and became simply "white." And when Protestants and Catholics became homogeneous Christians.

    Presumably all us "white" people who know how to sit still for a sermon look alike to the SJW posse.

  • Swiss Servator, Pikes Forward!||

    That was rather nicely done. *applause*

  • Killaz||

    Racism is peculiar thing. I worked with an older black lady who loved me to death. She brought me meals for lunch, went nuts on another black lady who said something smart ass to me, would do anything for me, but she had a laser like focused hatred for white women. To such an extent, she popped over to her house across the street from the enterprise for her bathroom breaks. She didn't want to sit down on the same commode seats that their asses have been.

  • Knarf Yenrab (prev. An0nB0t)||

    I've noticed that all my life. A lot of it stems from the weird relationship that Southern whites and Southern blacks have--their cultures, religious life, and worldview are close cousins, way closer than with anyone else from another region, but there's a real chasm there that shared culture just can't cross.

    That gap is 99% the result of Jim Crow, as the state forced black communities to form their own necessarily insular culture. Political factors stemming from the heavy socialist tilt of FDR and LBJ have only strengthened it, as has the fact that racist idiots like Jackson and Sharpton are considered leaders of the black community while Sowell and Walter Williams have zero popular pull.

  • Killaz||

    Because the Irish never counted as White.

    They try too hard to be white and wind up pinkish.

  • ||

    So....libertarians are racist because they are all white males?

    I think one of the commenters here mentioned something about projection a time or two.

    I have to admit, I had a lot of trouble trying to make sense of his argument criticizing logic. So much so that I failed.

    "But if only a scrappy band of pale-faced straight boys and men have access to Total Logic, it should go without saying that their conception of logic is flawed. Or else it must inherently incorporate racist, sexist, and homophobic claims as truth."

    OTOH, ask nearly any minority why it votes for Democrats, and see if you can get a coherent response that isn't inherently bigoted.

  • prolefeed||

    Hmmm, let's see ... Bush got nearly half of Latino votes when he ran against a white guy. Romney got only 17% of non-white votes when he ran against a half-black guy.

    So, would it be bigoted to suggest that maybe some of those minority votes for Obama were bigoted due to the color of his skin? It's bigoted to suggest that people voting based on the color of skin is bigotry because only white people can be bigots?

    Or maybe other factors are in play -- remarks like "self-deportation" might rub a few people wrong who have relatives he's talking about.

    And, I'm guessing that first generation Cuban-Americans and Vietnamese-Americans might have voted differently than other people who didn't have first-hand memories of Communism?

The poll also found that a startling 48 percent of Republicans believe that all living things today have existed in their present form since the start of time."

  • ||

    Discussed earlier. Also, polls are bullshit. All of 'em.

  • Cytotoxic||

    No they're not. But I wouldn't trust a lone outlier.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    The GOP has been purging any brainy types they had for a while. We hashed this out years ago here in this article, Bo.

    http://www.economist.com/blogs.....12/science

    DANIEL SAREWITZ devotes an entire column in Slate to the fact that only 6% of scientists self-identify as Republicans (55% self-identify as Democrats) without offering even a hypothetical explanation of how this situation might have come about.

    The Economist then explores possible answers for this development.

    I can think of three testable hypotheses they might look into. The first is that scientists are hostile towards Republicans, which scares young Republicans away from careers in science. The second is that Republicans are hostile towards science, and don't want to go into careers in science. The third is that young people who go into the sciences tend to end up becoming Democrats, due to factors inherent in the practice of science or to peer-group identification with other scientists. In the absence of data, I leave it to you to decide which you find most plausible. But by all means, social scientists should look into this.

    Be forewarned, the Peanuts don't like this topic.

  • Cytotoxic||

    social scientists

    BAHAHAHAHAHA he thinks social scientists are scientists-and that's probably a part of how the study was conducted, which explains the numbers.

    Back so soon for another H&R asskicking Shriek? What took you so long? Did your peers get so tired of you that they just gang-raped you in the back of the short bus?

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    While PB does deserve derision, what methodology of "hard" science would be appropriate to study a "social" phenomenon such as individuals of a certain profession and their political/ideological self-identification? Or are you arguing that this is something that cannot be investigated empirically?

  • ||

    If one were to use tried-and-true classic psychology experiment procedures, such as double-blinds and stringent care about leading questions and the like, you could probably have yourself a pretty interesting study that could have intriguing results. However, we have seen study after study by ideologues that are specifically designed to elicit the desired results, to the point where one just assumes all these types of "studies" are partisan backslapping or opponent-slagging, because they pretty much all are at this point.

    It's just like "climate change science". It has become so politicized, and there is absolutely no reproach from their colleagues when politicizing a study, that it's pretty much all impossible to trust anyone at this point.

    It's a real shame that political ideology has been allowed--with no struggle whatsoever--to influence "science" at this point, with no recriminations at all.

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    Right on, and it is a shame. But it's no reason to slur those social scientists out there doing God's work in the trenches every day. Like Mrs. Wine Commonsewer. Everyday she puts her life on the line, trawling through education statistics, not knowing if she'll make it home to TWC at night.

    Obviously Cyto is just part of the bigorati (was that how it spelled it?) and is jealous of the power-lifting abilities of surfing social scientists.

    DANIEL SAREWITZ devotes an entire column in Slate to the fact that only 6% of scientists self-identify as Republicans (55% self-identify as Democrats) without offering even a hypothetical explanation of how this situation might have come about.

    Pretty simple explanation. The scientist surveyed were members of AAAS which is primarily composed of academic/government scientist. The vast majority of scientist, who would be excluded from the survey, work in the private sector. Can you say sample bias?

  • PapayaSF||

    I wonder what the breakdown would be if they sampled engineers? You know, people who have to build stuff that works, and is cost-effective?

  • ||

    ^This. Private sector scientists, who aren't dependent on the State for funding, skew heavily libertarian, IME (30 years as a physical scientist in the private sector). Hardly any of us bother with AAAS until we're ready to retire and get a sweet adjunct academic gig.

    David Friedman: Who is against evolution?

    Almost everyone on the left believes that he believes in evolution. Yet I find it hard to think of any proposition popular on the left that is deduced from that belief. And, as I think I have shown, important dogmas of much of the left are inconsistent with it.

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    The Left are such fervent believers in evolution/natural selection/etc. that Peter Singer had to write a book trying to convince them of it.

    The consequences of the Theory of Evolution are also why, of course, Pete Singer believes we should be able to kill babies after they are born and we should be able to have sex with animals.

    None of the above was written as hyperbole or with humorous intent. That is what Singer has actually argued in the past.

    It's not as if Larry Elder isn't on the radio every single day. It's not as if Zora Neale Hurston isn't taught in schools. It's not as if in the 70's Black self-reliance through Black entrepreneurship wasn't shouted at every street corner by every dude with a bow-tie selling bean pies. Etc. and etc.

  • ||

    The Zora Neale Hurston that is taught in schools is not exactly the Zora Neale Hurston that existed in real life life either. Neither is the Zora Neale Hurston that is celebrated in her local hometown festival.

    Very true. I read a little Hurston in a freshman writing class @ UW, and believe me there was no mention of her politics.

    Dieudonne M’bala M’bala may be banned from performing in France after the black comedian repeatedly made a gesture that’s been called a “Nazi salute in reverse.”

    I don't know anything about the history of the gesture in question, but if this a picture of it,

    it looks like nothing more than a hip hopish Facebook pose to me.

  • PapayaSF||

    Read up on this Dieudonne guy. The gesture is not as innocent as it may look. He's a big-time Jew-hater.

    You know who else gave a Nazi salute?

    That's insane that downhill skiing is where he really fucked himself up.

    Dude drove go carts at 200 mph and skiing ended up being more dangerous for him.

    Weird.

  • ||

    no helmet no steal cage no racer seat belts...

    Boggles the mind.

  • Tman||

    Interesting. Maybe skiing is more dangerous.

    I haven't been in a go cart at 200 but I have taken Aztec at Aspen full speed. Somehow the go cart appears more dangerous.

  • Archduke von Pantsfan||

    one story mentioned he was wearing a helmet, and that he was off the groomed part of the trail and going very fast.

    It's still not as ironic as dying on the slopes after surviving decades of sex with Cher.

    Canadian woman turns basement into $30,000 replica of Starship Enterprise

    Canadian Line Rainville had $30,000 to spend on renovations to her Notre-Dame-des-Prairies, Quebec home and decided to recreate parts of the Star Trek Enterprise in her basement.

    The 51-year-old social worker decided she wanted to create a home theater, but also to remind herself of her childhood.
    The answer? A suite of rooms in her basement including the Enterprise's bridge, transporter room, recreation room, observation deck and Spock's quarters.

    Rainville told CNET that she was nine years old when she began watching Star Trek in French with her father every week.
    'I became addicted to this show and during the week, and I looked forward to each Tuesday at seven for another episode.

    'I enjoyed Star Trek because it was about space, unknown worlds, and aliens who often ended up being more friendly than expected. I enjoyed learning about Vulcans and seeing the interactions between the characters,' she said.
    Rainville spent more than a year perfecting her Star Trek suite, ensuring that her rooms came as close to the original as possible.

    Logical.
