Tonight on The Independents: Obamacare Woes, Elizabeth Warrenonmics, Rep. Tim Huelskamp Skewers Budget Deal, Assisted Suicide, Cuban Embargo, and Prince of Darkness Nick Gillespie!

It burns! |||You can watch it live on Fox Business Network at 9 pm ET/6 pm Californian, you can watch the sexy re-run at midnight, or you can DVR that bad boy for later, but whatever the method, please do tune into tonight's Episode Three of The Independents, your very favorite new nightly cable news show.

Our top story tonight! Obamacare by the numbers, both in enrollment and (un)popularity. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) squares off against centrist Democrats on entitlement reform. Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas) explains why he thinks less than half the GOP caucus in the House will vote for the Ryan-Murray please-don't-shut-down-the-government spending plan. Reason.com/tv Editor Nick Gillespie spreads wisdom on all of the above. Plus, assisted suicide, the Cuban embargo, six-year-olds expelled from school for kissing, and more!

If you want to re-live last night's comments thread, click here. And you can watch the whole first episode here. Follow the show on Facebook if that’s the kind of thing you like to do, and for sure start heckling before, during, and after the show on Twitter, @IndependentsFBN.

    I'm liking these Independents daily posts. They can combine the fun of liveblogging TV with a de facto late night links.

    Links like this one

    The Jersey City Department of Public Safety is issuing a bid specification to purchase new weaponry. It will also be what we believe is a first-of-its-kind policy statement for our expectations of what gun manufacturers owe the American people when it comes to their safety and the safety of their loved ones.

    Jersey City will be asking all bidders the following six socially responsible questions:

    - What do you do to combat illegal gun trafficking and illegal gun crime?
    - Do you manufacturer and sell assault weapons for civilian use?
    - Do you agree not to sell certain models of firearms for civilian use?
    - Are you requiring your dealers to conduct background checks?
    - Do you fund research related to gun violence and smart gun technology?
    - Will you commit to prohibiting your brand name from being used in violent video games?

    Gun makers are going to complain that Jersey City is overstepping its bounds and interfering with gun owners' rights. Unfortunately that's the typical response from an industry which has fiercely fought to protect its right to manufacture and sell guns and bullets yet shows almost no regard for what happens after they are purchased.

  • Almanian!||

    Do you manufacturer and sell assault weapons for civilian use?

    And there's the dumbest question - second one in. Could hardly wait. Nice job, Jersey City!

  • Cyto||

    Oh, that's the dumb one? Not

    - Will you commit to prohibiting your brand name from being used in violent video games?

    'Cause that's the most important thing when you are buying a new weapon. Gotta make sure that they don't use the same brand in "Grand Fallout Theft Halo 7". That could prove embarrassing for the peacekeepers....

    Actually, it doesn't appear there is a relevant question on the list. I suppose maybe preventing illegal gun trafficking is of some interest to civilian law enforcement, so I take back my snark on that one. A little.

    Alright, I'm watching the show for the first time tonight.

    Thus far? Kennedy is really annoying me. She talks too much, she talks over others so you can't hear what she or the other person are saying, and she just comes across as really abrasive to me. I feel like she doesn't even listen to what others say, except for purposes of coming up with snappy rejoinders. She needs to realize that the show isn't about her.

    The rest of the crew is doing alright, but I think the show would be better served by covering fewer topics more in depth. I think the average non-reasonoid will quickly get lost and change the channel.

  • Irish||

    Pretty much everything you say is true.

  • Ska||

    But Kennedy does look pretty good, so they have that going for them.

  • Irish||

    There are definite positives. The show could just be really good if they cleaned up a few things.

    1. Slower pace. Stay on one issue for longer periods of time. Admittedly, I have the same problem with Stossel. It's possible it's the network making them have this ADD style, in which case there's nothing they can do. Otherwise they really should slow down.

    2. Kennedy spends way too much time making bizarre jokes and quips and frequently does so at the expense of the conversation.

    3. Kmele doesn't seem to talk enough. I don't know if he just isn't as gregarious as Kennedy and Welch, but he has some good things to say when he does speak. He just spends an awful lot of time not talking.

    If Kennedy talked less and Kmele got more involved, the show would be better.

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    If Kennedy talked less and Kmele got more involved, the show would be better.

    You, sir, are a scoundrel.

  • SweatingGin||

    Slower pace. Stay on one issue for longer periods of time.

    I was thinking the same, but the fast transitions do seem to help with preventing it degenerating into a shouting match.

    Still, covering one or two less things a night would be fine.

  • Irish||

    You can stay on one issue and switch to different facets of that issue.

    There's no reason you can't do an entire episode about the drug war and hit on police abuses, punitive sentencing, three strike laws, the impact on Mexico, etc.

    So long as you keep it structured I don't think this would be a problem.

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    I like that idea.

    Thanks for the preview.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Michael Moore bashing? Talk about your low hanging fruit.

  • playa manhattan||

    Fruit that heavy is gonna hang pretty low.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Actually, the Cubans are getting their internet on USB drives. So there's that.

  • SweatingGin||

    High bandwidth. Very high latency.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Commercial for the inviting business environment of New York. Way to be ironic, Fox Biz ad sales department.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Wouldn't it be easier to have closed caption behind the podium?

  • Bobarian||

    OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT!

  • The Rt. Hon. Serious Man, Visc||

    Stop giving money to politicians..that's weird.

  • SweatingGin||

    Kennedy brings out the claws on Affleck, ouch.

  • playa manhattan||

    Rightly so.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    After Daredevil, it's all uphill.

  • Bam!||

    For God's sake, Alvy, even Freud spoke of a latency period.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Chivalry is dead.

    Political money means shit if the government didn't have power to interfere in the market through the proxy of regulations and tax breaks/subsidies.

    SCARY HOLSTER! ZOMGZ! SANDY HOOK!

    Headline from local Fox station re: possible gunman at my alma mater:

    According to a D.C. police source, the man seen with gun at American University is an off-duty officer and had a holster showing.
  • playa manhattan||

    The definition of "gunman" is so flexible these days. I got pulled over for speeding by a gunman the other day.

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    Open carry is illegal in DC, no?

    Not saying it's "scary" but if it's illegal, it's worth mentioning.

  • Irish||

    They're talking about sex tomorrow, guys! SEX!

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    AH! Lou Dobbs.

  • BakedPenguin||

    Yeah. That was a scary transition.

  • Irish||

    Who is watching Lou Dobb's show at this point?

  • BakedPenguin||

    American

  • BakedPenguin||

    Also, Lonewacko.

  • SweatingGin||

    People whose remote control isn't working.

    People who fell asleep or passed out on the couch.

    Old people who forgot to replace the battery in their hearing aids, but still like the pictures to keep them company?

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    No subsequent thread. Revert to late night links.

  • ||

    Ted, has this been posted?

    A bank safe swimming pool filled with 8 million Swiss coins is being auctioned off to the highest bidder who wants to fulfill every person's childhood (and adult) dream of swimming in money.
  • Francisco d Anconia||

    Meh. My orphans clean my money pool twice a day. Kinda old hat.

  • playa manhattan||

    You make them clean out a frozen pool?

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    Only twice a day.

  • Ted S.||

    I prefer to spread my gold coins out on my bed and sleep among them, like Zasu Pitts in Greed.

  • playa manhattan||

    All snark aside, Reason has people on national TV now explaining libertarian ideas, and somebody threw them a 50 large donation this week. All of this is great news and the future looks bright.

    /back to my IPAs

  • ||

    IPAs are good, especially Dogfish Head. Still, I'm cleaning guns while stoned and watching the Planet of the Apes musical episode of The Simpsons, which also works.

  • playa manhattan||

    I have over 8000 rounds through my SA XD 9mm, and I have never bothered to clean it. Not a single FTF or FTE. I'm beginning to think that carbon residue is the perfect lubricant. It sure seems to work will on my cast iron skillet....

  • ||

    I can see that for a larger pistol, but if I don't clean my concealed carry pistols, they will jam. So the P3AT and the PF9 are getting cleaned.

  • playa manhattan||

    True. I keep a dremel attachment to polish the feed ramp of my Glock 36 for the same reason. I just don't shoot it that much...

  • Irish||

    I was reading Rachel Maddow's first WaPo article when I came across this gem.

    In the eight years of the George W. Bush administration, no hearty saplings were ever able to take root in the shade of that big tree. No one expected Vice President Dick Cheney to ever be a contender for the presidency — part of his effectiveness was his willingness to say and do very unpopular things. When he snapped at ABC’s Martha Raddatz, “So?” as she questioned him about public disapproval of the Iraq war, he wrote the perfect epitaph for his vice presidency.

    I wonder if Maddow is similarly critical of Hillary Clinton snapping "What difference, at this point, does it make?" in front of a Benghazi hearing.

    If not, it would be great for Maddow to explain to us what the difference is.

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    Clinton is a liberal?

  • Ted S.||

    I'd have argued it also has something to with Hillary's having a vulva, but that didn't stop lefties from attacking Sarah Palin.

  • Bobarian||

    That's not a real vulva...

    Bill Clinton was the first female president, donchaknow.

  • Sevo||

    "If not, it would be great for Maddow to explain to us what the difference is."

    Cheney = R
    Clinton = D
    That'll do it every time.

  • jamesrk||

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    FUCK YOU!

  • playa manhattan||

    Let's reserve judgement until we see what Heroic Mulatto has to say about this tweaking video...

  • jamesrk||

    yea francisco, it may start out slow but it gets pretty epic towards the end.

  • Archduke von Pantsfan||

    Do Australians do everything backwards and upside down?

    THE new national broadband network (NBN) will deliver slower speeds and cost up to $30 billion extra to deliver, under the government's new scheme.

  • Archduke von Pantsfan||

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    25mbps? I get 3. I demand the gubmint do something.

  • playa manhattan||

    I get 300 down 150 up. So I guess there is 1 benefit to living in the People's Republic of CA

  • ||

    Quantum?

  • playa manhattan||

    Fuck Yeah! Quantum BUSINESS!!!!

  • ||

    Look, I don't call for killing those with more than me and redistributing their assets often, but I'm considering it right now.

  • playa manhattan||

    You should focus on your TV deficiency problem right now.

    Just to rub it in, here is my iPhone results 3 rooms away from the AP:

    You're a thoroughly unlikable fellow.

  • ||

    This is the only time it has been a problem. I'll get my parents' verizon acocunt info and get streaming working and it'll return to not being an issue.

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    So you don't wait half a second for your porn to download?

    Cool!

    Sex, guns, cocaine-induced heart attacks and a pet Bengal tiger: An inside look at a millionaire poker player, the most followed man on Instagram

    It's like a reasonably good looking, bearish, Dennis Quaid facsimile made a rap video in photo form.

  • playa manhattan||

    "At 33 feels ‘bulletproof’ having survived two SEAL training hell weeks"

    He's doing it wrong.

  • Tman||

    A friend of mine asked for podcast recommendations tonight on FB, and a great list emerged.

    Mine was Startalk (and especially the The Joe Rogan Experience episode where Joe explains his big bang theory) cause I'm a space dork, but what are some of your favorite ones?

    Channels or episodes in general.

  • Archduke von Pantsfan||

  • Winston||

    Snobs have to love something foreign so what is foreign to the French?

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    To be fair, fish and chips is the ONLY British contribution to edible cuisine.

  • playa manhattan||

    You beat me by 1 minute. What about Prime Rib?

  • ||

    Full English Breakfast?

  • Tman||

    One might argue that some of the best chefs in the world are from the UK these days.

    Folks who say the food in England is terrible are idiots. Places like Hand & Flowers, Marlow or the Fat Duck are on the cutting edge of the best cuisine man has ever put on a plate.

  • playa manhattan||

    The Fat Duck is on my list, as was elBulli. I wish I had gone there before I had kids and couldn't do long distance leisure travel...

  • ||

    Don't kids come with some kind of return policy?

  • playa manhattan||

    It's not a very good deal. Usually 20 to life.

  • ||

    Guinness Pie?

  • playa manhattan||

    You can do a lot with potatoes, oil, salt and malt vinegar. Plus, the British gave us Prime Rib, the greatest food known to mankind.

  • Winston||

    Don't forget:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot_(food)

    Is it not popular in the US because the kids think it is gay?

  • The Rt. Hon. Serious Man, Visc||

    How about some Spotted Dick?

  • Winston||

  • playa manhattan||

    GROW UP, YOU TWO!

  • Francisco d Anconia||

    I rest my case.

  • The Rt. Hon. Serious Man, Visc||

    Huh, did you know it is illegal to import haggis from Scotland into the United States?

    It contains sheep's lungs, which is banned by the US Department of Agriculture. So we Americans cannot have a traditional Burns' Supper.

  • Archduke von Pantsfan||

    HOW HAVE WE MADE IT THIS FAR

  • playa manhattan||

    WHO IS WE AMERICA JUNIOR?

  • Bobarian||

    To be fair, many of the other parts of the sheep have been spoiled by 'standard Scottish treatment', so lungs may be one of the few unused parts left.

  • JeremyR||

    Good.

  • Archduke von Pantsfan||

    NEVER READ THE COMMENTS

    Its no wonder I don't like to read the 'Post', because of the heavy capitalist bias. Canada Post is more affordable than any other mail delivery system because it provides a tax-payer subsidized public service. You say '3 times the price of a stamp', name any private company that is willing to deliver my letter for $1.50 or even $2.00? Look at parcels, most of us opt for Canada Post because its more affordable, and they won't rip you off with custom and brokerage fee. Finally, just like I appreciate health care in this country, I appreciate that regardless where I live or send in Canada, mail is affordable and subsidized without discrimination against rural communities, or those without limited access.
    It is the minority top 5% who don't value public service. The views of this paper don't represent the views of Canadians, or core Canadian values. I will miss you Canada Post.
  • Francisco d Anconia||

    It is the minority top 5% who don't value public service.

    My assumption is that's because they are the ones paying the subsidy.

  • John C. Randolph||

    Note to Kennedy and that white dude behind her: those retro hipster frames look fucking stupid. It's 2013, not 1953.

    -jcr

  • Bobarian||

    Some great poet said 'it's hip to be square'.

  • Bam!||

    Kennedy has a bit of a naughty librarian thing going for her.

  • RishJoMo||

    That sounds like one crazy plan to me dude. Wow.
