Thought this was a Portlandia ad for a second.
The Vinson Court (Rutledge and Murphy were holdovers) had significant turnover from the Chief Justice (another recent death) on down. Three of four of Truman's picks (Rutledge was a FDR pick)were gone by the Eisenhower years. Rutledge was chosen after Douglas, for instance, and Douglas served for over 25 more years.
John Paul Stevens clerked for Rutledge. Stevens wrote a chapter about him in a 1950s collection of short justice bios.
