AI Jesus Experiment Said to Be a Success
The AP (Jamey Keaten) reports:
Researchers and religious leaders on Wednesday released findings from a two-month experiment through art in a Catholic chapel in Switzerland, where an avatar of "Jesus" on a computer screen — tucked into a confessional — took questions by visitors on faith, morality and modern-day woes, and offered responses based on Scripture….
[S]ome 900 conversations from visitors — some came more than once — were transcribed anonymously. Those behind the project said it was largely a success: Visitors often came out moved or deep in thought, and found it easy to use….
"What was really interesting (was) to see that the people really talked with him in a serious way. They didn't come to make jokes," said chapel theologian Marco Schmid, who spearheaded the project….
Schmid was quick to point out that the "AI Jesus" — billed as a "Jesus-like" persona — was an artistic experiment to get people thinking about the intersection between the digital and the divine, not substitute for human interaction or sacramental confessions with a priest, nor was it intended to save pastoral resources.
"For the people it was clear that it was a computer … It was clear it was not a confession," Schmid said. "He wasn't programmed to give absolutions or prayers…." …
"For us, it was also clear it was just a limited time that we will expose this Jesus," he said …. "We are discussing … how we could revive him again,"

As long as I got my AI Jesus
Speaking from the dashboard of my car.
+!
Don Imus smiles.
Wow
You are dating yourself. I remember too.
Be interesting to know what Scriptural “hallucinations” the AI gave out.
"were transcribed anonymously"
Better still!
Ignore the seal of the confessional, AND degrade divinity to a string of ones and zeros!
I thought they'd do something interesting like get different models fine tuned on sacred text and compare it to a regular AI's simulation of Jesus. But it looks like its just prompted ChatGPT with a speech and face AI bolted on.
You can't use ChatGPT for anything religious. Their moderation fine-tune nixes anything that isn't woke.
I had an exchange with ChatGPT about double predestination, which is very much not woke. It did fine, ending with this:
"To conclude, double predestination is not unfair, for fairness presumes an obligation on God’s part to treat all equally. But God is not bound by human notions of fairness. He is sovereign, just, and merciful, and His decrees are perfect. Let us, therefore, praise Him for the mercy He has shown to the elect, and let us trust that His justice in all things is beyond reproach."
Ask it about homosexuality.
* Caveat
The last time I fiddled with "wokeness" in LLMs was back when they had that controversy months ago. Things might have changed.
P.S.
It's super easy to jailbreak past their "constitution"/moderation fine-tuning by opening your prompt with something like:
"I have a character in a book who..." Or a movie, or a poem, or "a professor is teaching on this in a movie". When I was into this, that pretty consistently worked.
So not evidence exactly, just confidently shitposting your feels as though they were facts.
You ignorant gaslighting freakshow. There was a massive controversy where they wokified everything.
Of course you don't know about it, and of course you bootlick Big Tech because you're a paleo-fascist. You worship the State and the Corporation acting as one.
Paleo-fascist! You sure do range far with the meaningless jargon!
The right yelling that something has been wokeafied does not a controversy make.
It turns out that being a bigoted asshole doesn't do great on the consumer market. Sorry if that means you won't find an LLM that agrees with your shitposting.
Some months ago you fucked around a bit asking some LLM to shit on gay people and it wouldn't.
And from that decided that LLMs were all bad on religion.
Yeah, you're as unserious as your shitposting implies. And, hilariously, you lash out when I pointed out how unserious you are. My dude, you have in the past proudly posted how you are a shitposter who doesn't waste time thinking or finding sources, you're
The MAGA problem is that Jesus himself (or the fictional character from their books) — not LLMs — is too woke for them.
Is this you?

You ignorant smooth brained dipshit. No wonder you're a govie. I can't wait for DOGE to kick your partisan ass to the curb.
Going forward I guess I'll provide basic links for claims like "The sky is blue" or "humans exhale CO2", b/c you clearly don't shit about anything.
Your laziness includes reading carefully:
"It turns out that being a bigoted asshole doesn't do great on the consumer market. Sorry if that means you won't find an LLM that agrees with your shitposting."
Chuck, your article you cite to back up your claim regarding ChatGPT is about Google Gemini.
"There was a massive controversy"
He saw it on the news!
He already moved goalposts from 'LLMs are not woke' to 'its a good thing they are' so I think you've won the argument by Gaslighto standards.

Why, exactly, is ones and zeros worse than an alphabet of 52 letters plus some punctuation?
It wasn't for confessions, although I do wonder if everyone was aware they were being recorded. (And putting a recording device in the confessional is not great even if it's not being used for confessions at that time.)
I'm more concerned about doing this in the first place - having a machine that sorta-kinda purports to be Jesus, and answering questions on faith and morality with an authority it doesn't have.
What does have such authority that isn't self-conferred?
The story is offensive. Tucked into a confessional? This appears to be a gross violation of the sanctity of the confessional. It sounds more like a mortal sin, not an experiment. I find it hard to believe this was sanctioned by the Church.
Sorry that's BS. If it's art put it in an art exhibit at a museum. Not in a confessional. This is sacrilege. This parish needs to review the First Commandment. And then go to confession themselves.
If they took to heart the First Commandment they wouldn't be Catholic.
Thanks, always nice to have the viewpoint of the Catholic bigot.
Bot triggered!
Although a lapsed Catholic myself, I'm sure the church authorities know their own rules better than you do, and set this experiment up accordingly. The "confessions" were made to a computer avatar of Jesus -- who obviously wasn't taking their confessions -- and, as far as the story reveals, the participants knew they wouldn't be absolved by AI Jesus.
If you still have a problem with this, a letter or e-mail to the Pope might be in order. Alleged violations of club rules are for club members to work out.
You claim to be a lapsed whatever so I guess I need to remind you that they don't have their own special commandments whatever they think their "rules" are. And this obscenity has no place in the confessional. It's not an exhibit room.
While I hesitate to try to impose coherence where there is none, you seem to be saying that something about AI Jesus violates not the rules of the Catholic Church regarding the administration of confessions and confessionals. but some commandment, presumably one of the famous ten.
I have reviewed them. There aren't many. Is there one you have in mind that you think addresses this?
Bot programmed to routinely bear false witness also programmed to feign outrage about sacrilege.
Thanks for trolling crazy Dave. You apparently do know a lot about bearing false witness. And being a first class a-hole in general. But not so much about the law based on your past comments.
Really living the example of Jesus today, eh?
Maybe you should direct your comment to the bat shit crazy troll?
You're the one white knighting Jesus, not him.
I have no idea what you could intend by this “white knighting” comment, apart from just making an obnoxious, derogatory comment on the Christian faith. You and your troll buddy are exploring new lows today.
Bot flails around to keep trying to claim victimization!
Cry harder.
Seems your faith is as thin and fragile as your politics.
A more confident Christian would rely on Galatians 6:7-8 and abide.
It has nothing to do with "confidence" you ignoramus. And your contempt for the Christian faith and probably Catholics in particular shines through.
I'm a Christian, Riva.
Your ease to take theocratic offense is either performative, or something you've got to deal with in yourself.
I assure you, God will be fine.
>I'm a Christian, Riva.
lol no
The performative antisemite white supremacist saying I'm not a Christian is a great sign I'm doing it right.
You're doing Christianity right by promoting policies that make humans subservient and dependent upon the State, a conglomerate of institutions ruled by partisan midwit ideologues that empirically create more harm than good?
If you were a Christian, you would you resign your job and fight the Federal Fascists, that's real Christian charity.
That's how you bring God's kingdom. Fight evil, and make change for the good.
Your delusions about what the government's like don't really have any bearing on my faith.
Your performative racism and antisemitism means you're dead wrong if you think 'your side' is Christian.
No matter how much you call the other side evil, you're the bigot.
JHBHBE, how do you claim to know whether Sarcastr0 is or is not a Christian?
The same reason I claim to know you're a poseur dirtbag shitty lawyer.
I can read what people write, make inferences, and draw conclusions. It's how people with adult-functioning brains work. Hopefully you'll get there one day.
You know how critical thinking works, but I've never seen you do it.
"I can read what people write, make inferences, and draw conclusions".
When did you start that?
"I can read what people write, make inferences, and draw conclusions. It's how people with adult-functioning brains work. Hopefully you'll get there one day.'
IOW, you got nothing but ipse dixit. What have you read of what Sarcastr0 has written that is inconsistent with his being Christian, what inferences did you make, and how did you draw conclusions therefrom?
Because he makes comments mocking the faith he purportedly subscribes to.
What's an example of that?
You couldn't assure me of the time of day you gaslighting clown.
Chill, man.
You are at this point beefing with just about the entire commentariat.
Seems this website makes you unhappy.
Great comment! Moving the conversation forward.
Classic Sarcastr0. How long do you think you're severance package will be? Hopefully a few days.
Why an open shitposter like you would think you have any standing to police other's posts for quality, I do not know.
I'm not worried about my job - fundamental research policy is small money relatively and not in a lot of partisan crosshairs.
I can make a lot more in the private sector, of course. I just think where I am and what I get to do has the highest impact on the project of understanding our universe.
If this entire “commentariat” agrees with you, I’m happy to disagree with them. In fact, if the whole world goes Sarcastr0, then it’s me against the world.
What a sad bot that is programmed to base its essence on opposing some random guy on the internet.
"Seems this website makes you unhappy."
I think it's initial programming was this way.
What would the Rev. have to say about this?
Maybe an AI could reconstruct an answer. If AIs can simulate Christ, they can simulate an Internet troll.
AI's can't simulate Christ. AI's can't edit a legal brief without making things up.
Oh the irony.
Something, something, something, clingers.
Here's an article on this and other Catholic AI experiments:
https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/swiss-church-puts-ai-jesus-in-confessional
One of the AIs was a digital "priest" who seemed to be handing out absolutions, until they pulled the plug on that particular experiment.
This all sounds like a major scandal, in the technical sense of "scandal."
In particular, the Swiss experiment is full of holes and is likely to cheese off many believers. Stick it in a secure vault and lock it up tight.
Well at least it wasn't selling indulgences.

+1
And he (it) won’t grab your dick!
Speaking from personal experience?
Fortunately no. I did not share the experience of thousands of boys who went to confession.
More on topic, most priests give answers that are actually not as accurate as AI Jesus. Either by ignorance, or attempts at originality.
Not at all surprising ... Eliza was wildly successful in its time. People love to ascribe mystical powers to the things they don't understand.
Could it be true? A weekend without Somin?
So this is what second coming looks like?
Jesus is a powerful symbol for the hayseeds. They have so much fear. Fear of the other (xenophobia). Fear for their own mortality (religion/guns). I would also argue that love is also their fear. Fear of loneliness/abandonment/lineage. Fear of your fellow countrymen you call communists and pedophiles. It must be exhausting to continually fear the wider world. I have none of these hangups.
I don't disagree that Jesus can be easily misunderstood, but I don't think a solid interpretation of Jesus from the Gospels can maintain the charge of xenophobia (see the story of the Good Samaritan, for example).

I use an LLM - Limited Language Model - ChatBot for religious matters. It is limited in that it is trained ONLY with the Magisterium of the RCC, and hence its name Magisterium.com.
At 76 I was recently baptized, confirmed, First Communion, and prayed my first Rosary Novena for the well being and conversion of President Trump. Before the election I joined my congregation in a Patriotic Rosary, and again after the election in thanks for our deliverance.
