Never heard of this. Typically victims of a scam like this fell prey to their own greed and hubris, in one way or another. That does not excuse it in any way of course.
From what I’ve seen, his actions weren’t much different from millions of women. Pretend to be something you’re not to convince people to give you gifts, prey on their emotions and then split. Sorry you don’t like the mirror lady.
I have to agree — having overheard undergraduate women coached to “buy the most expensive thing on the menu, even if you don’t like it”, I have to ask what the issue is.
Women routinely pretend to be something they are not — what do you think makeup is for? And while I am not an advocate of date rape — I’m not — you don’t want to know how many date rape “trainings” I’ve had to go through, quietly fuming about the woman’s conduct and asking myself how could she have done what *she* did if she cared about him…

In a sentence — everyone to the political right of Vladimir Lenin has been driven out. I’m reminded of what Bob Dole said about Baby Boomers and their children, the Millennials, are even worse!
