Academic Freedom Alliance Letter to SUNY Fredonia
The AFA calls on SUNY Fredonia to reaffirm the academic freedom of Professor Stephen Kershnar
The Academic Freedom Alliance released a public letter to SUNY Fredonia calling on the university to reaffirm the academic freedom of philosophy professor Stephen Kershnar.
Kershnar works on applied ethics and writes on a wide range of controversial topics, including "adult-child sex." His research includes a scholarly monograph dedicated to that subject published by an academic press. He recently discussed his work on a YouTube channel dedicated to philosophy topics, and that is when the trouble began. His comments on adult-child sex were picked up by what is becoming a common set of right-leaning media and campus watchdog groups, including Campus Reform, the Libs of Tiktok Twitter account, the Post Millennial, and the New York Post.
SUNY Fredonia issued a denunciation via tweet which concluded that "the matter is being reviewed."
From the AFA letter:
I write on behalf of the Academic Freedom Alliance to emphasize that Professor Kershnar's scholarly research and teaching on these topics is fully protected by principles of academic freedom and his public discussion of his ideas on these issues is protected by principles of freedom of speech. There is, quite simply, nothing for the university to review under these circumstances. The university's obligation in the face of this controversy is to provide a forum in which ideas, however extreme or misguided they may be or seem to be, can be articulated, criticized, and fairly debated. A member of your faculty under such public scrutiny is likely to be targeted for abuse and threats, and the university's responsibility is to shelter the faculty member from that harassment and not add to it.

SUNY Fredonia simply wrote, "The matter is being reviewed," not Prof. Kershner's statement or anything else to do with him.
Maybe they're reviewing their policies.
Maybe they're reviewing how, "to shelter the faculty member from (potential) harassment."
I think you guys jumped the gun here.
Did they? 'In a message to the college community, Pres. Stephen Kolison, Jr. says the professor is being assigned to duties off campus and will not have contact with students.'
I, for one, think it's a good thing that these sub-humans who pretend to be so enlightened are showing their true colors.
Who, except for like-minded individuals, would want to socialize with lowlifes like that?
Shunning would be a good first step.
Beyond shunning, defund, de-accredit, shut down, seize all assets in civil forfeiture. To deter the enemy.
Hey, Queenie, zero tolerance for woke.
Your criticism of the intolerant is a bit undercut by calling them 'sub-humans'
Who said I was criticizing the intolerant?
If you don't think they are subhuman, you are in denial.
I agree that the professor's statements are protected by free-speech principles, and I support the AFA's position. Even if the university's ultimate position is that the statements are protected, the fact of taking the matter under review for an unspecified time subjects the professor to the uncertainty that results from his knowledge that university administrators are, by and large, a pusillanimous group and prone to giving into the mob (although if this is a right-wing mob, there is less chance of that).
On the other hand, most of the critiques mentioned in the post are fully consistent with notions of free speech. That is, they were of the sort, "Look what this idiot (and perhaps evil) professor is claiming!" That is their right to do so. Professors (or anyone else) who make moral and policy claims expose their ideas to denunciation. So, it seems to me that if people are outraged by the professor's claims, it is their prerogative to express that outrage. And if the outrage is called to the attention of the university, they should simply say that it is none of their business.
Anyone else find it funny that the same group that infantilized adult women and minimizes their ability to provide informed consent also pushes sex with children who don't fully understand what is going on.
My point exactly.
What group is that?
So, over/under on when this is normalized and anyone who objects is some sort of "phobe?"

Seems like the AFA is putting out these letters every day or so ...
Suppose that a professor of astronomy teaches that the Earth is the center of the Universe, and all the Heavenly Bodies revolve around the Earth. Students who want to get jobs as astronomers or admission to graduate programs in astronomy would not find this teaching useful. If this prof has not yet been granted tenure, would it be a violation of academic freedom to let him go?
Apparently he does have tenure:
Kershnar is a tenured professor at the university. According to the American Association of University Professors, this designation “is to safeguard academic freedom, which is necessary for all who teach and conduct research in higher education. When faculty members can lose their positions because of their speech, publications, or research findings, they cannot properly fulfill their core responsibilities to advance and transmit knowledge.”

And he got tenure because of these philosophical positions, which the university perfectly appropriate for a philosophy professor to do until its administration suddenly gor scared shitless.
When I hear Fredonia, I think of "Duck Soup".
Me too -- Margaret Dumont in particular
Dammit, that's what I was going to say! "Hail hail Fredonia, land of the brave and free..."
