1/8/1973: Trial begins for seven men accused of illegal entry into Democratic headquarters at Watergate hotel. The break-in would give rise to U.S. v. Nixon.

Woodward and Bernstein like to take the credit, but in fact their reporting was mostly ignored by the rest of the press and Americans in general. What really broke then case was Judge Sirica in the trial mentioned here, threatening maximum sentences unless the defendants sang. And sing they did.
