Prof. Gail Heriot Joining the Conspiracy

I'm delighted to report that Prof. Gail Heriot will be joining us here at the Conspiracy. Gail teaches at the University of San Diego School of Law, and specializes in Employment and Labor Law, Torts, and Civil Rights; she has also served since 2007 on the U.S. Commission for Civil Rights. I've known Gail for many years and have long appreciated her work -- I much look forward to her posts!

I notice that she is a member and contributor to the Federalist Society.

When looking into the CUNY protest last week, I noticed that Josh Blackman (member and contributor to the Federalist Society), invited to the event by the local chapter of the Federalist Society, and protested by the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, attacking him on the basis that he's racist, white supremacist, etc.

In March there was a protest at Lewis & Clark, where Christina Hoff Sommers (member and contributor to the Federalist Society) was protested by the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, attacking her on the basis that she's racist, white supremacist, etc.

Last year, at U Penn, Amy Wax (member and contributor ...), was protested ..., attacking her ... (as above). She was also later protested due to the invitation of Heather Mac Donald to a Federalist Society event. That protest (which I don't think was organized by the NLG) was particularly interesting because the coverage of it interviews a student who believes that the Federalist Society is a "known white supremacy group". youtube.com/watch?v=7aAtkbC8Nls

Can comment on whether you believe yourselves members of a "known white supremacy group", or offer any explanation on why NLG seems to be such frequent protesters of the Federalist Society? As to why the NLG is at war with the Federalist Society:

About the NLG

The National Lawyers Guild is the nation's oldest and largest progressive bar association and was the first one in the US to be racially integrated. Our mission is to use law for the people, uniting lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people by valuing human rights over property interests.

I find it quite interesting that they see basic property rights as opposed to human rights instead of as as subset of human rights.

And from the first link, here is how they describe the Federalist Society:

The Federalist Society was founded in 1980 by law students and faculty who felt alienated by the allegedly liberal atmosphere of law schools. Since then, the organization has been enormously successful in translating its ideas into law and policy, and has done so while remaining mostly outside the attention of media and the general public.

I actually looked on SPLC to see if they've already labeled the Federalist Society as a neo-nazi org. They have not, which genuinely surprised me.

The faux libertarians of the Volokh Conspiracy welcome a certified faux independent to their movement conservative roster.

At the Conspiracy, she will not be required to engage in disingenuous gymnastics to mask misleadingly and officially her partisan position as a conservative, although it seems likely she will masquerade as a libertarian in traditional Conspiracy fashion when doing so flatters movement conservatism.

Unless this one disappears too, it seems reasonable to wonder whether enlisting Prof. Heriot is little more than another attempt by the Conspiracy to shed the remarkable and telling "all-male, all-white" label.

thank god you aren't a faux troll Arthur or we would remain under the unknowing thrall of conservatives, who , as you surely know, are unjust by definition. And can you believe these partisans engage in, you know, partisanship. Silly me, I've been listening to what Gail Heriot says and had been allayed into believing she is thoughtful and frank on the subject of race and had arguments deserving of engagement when i should have been reading media matters.

I think the criticism is quite simply that it was not wholly honest of Prof. Heriot to switch her registration in order to get a non-Republican seat on the Civil Rights Commission.

That has nothing to do with the value of her arguments.
