Can America Help 'De-escalate' in the Middle East?
Join Reason on YouTube and Facebook at 1 p.m. Eastern this Thursday for a discussion with Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute about the Israel-Hamas war.
"Despite clear interests on almost all sides against a regional war [in the Middle East], all sides are acting in a manner that makes such a war increasingly likely," writes Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, in an October 15 article calling for the Biden administration to push for "de-escalation" between Israel and Hamas.
He says that although the Biden administration is "well aware" of "escalation risks" that might lead to a broader regional war, talk of de-escalation remains off-limits. The Huffington Post reports that it has obtained State Department memos instructing employees to avoid terms like "de-escalation/ceasefire," "end to violence/bloodshed," and "restoring calm" in press materials and statements.
But is de-escalation even feasible after Hamas slaughtered Israeli civilians and continues to hold close to 200 hostages? How should Israel respond to the worst terrorist attack in its history? What can U.S. policymakers do to make the prospect of a bigger war less likely?
Join Reason's Zach Weissmueller and Liz Wolfe for a live discussion of these questions and more with Trita Parsi this Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern on Reason's YouTube channel or Facebook page.

America is not there to help de-escalate anything.
Pretty sure de-escalation would be the worst possible outcome for the Biden administration, the Democratic Party and the GOPe.
It'd rank right up there with a Zelenskyy/Putin Peace deal in terms of a sheer disaster.
I'm as antiwar as the next hippie but Americans died, yo. And some are still there, B.
America can’t de escalate a conflict by supporting the antagonist, Israel.
The apartheid won’t stop until the Jews are stopped from oppressing Palestinians.
Such boring boilerplate.
Can’t you do better?
Can’t you do better?
No. It's a low effort Nazi spambot. About what you'd expect from the "Aryan Masters".
Stop with the stupid Nazi conflation. Everyone sees through it. And everyone also knows that Misek is right, and that you're an apologist for the murder of over 10,000 Gazan children.
Nazi is going to Nazi, I guess.
Some of the stupidity would end if Nazi shit would fuck off and die.
Biden’s puppeteers will happily drag us into a full on nuclear war.
Not this administration. This never would have happened if Trump were still in office.
And things are only going to get worse.
They've got fifteen and a half months in which to destroy the planet in order to cover up the Biden Family Scam.
GO!
The US Navy is there to discourage Iran from getting involved.
Won't work. Every wargame the US has ever run involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz has Iran closing the Strait and sinking the carrier group in a few days. Houthis shutting down Red Sea by trading their thousand dollar drones for the US Navy's million dollar missiles.
We've been doing such a great job for the last 100 years.
It depends on how many of those nuclear attack submarines are accompanying the battle groups. Turning the whole area into a glass parking lot would de-escalate things pretty thoroughly for a few generations.
Yws, by threatening to do to Gaza what was done to Japan in August of 1945.

Hell, Dresden would probably suffice, if we had nearly that many bombs or bombers around still.
Dresden was all about making a point. Gaza is a literal shithole.
Thus, fire.
almost all sides
We're all on the outside in the dark. The ruling elite know exactly who is manipulating the situation and how they hope to profit from it. They won't be sharing that information with us. Just make some more popcorn and watch.
Why start now?
was calling them "teams" yesterday smh
Without irony.
New York: "Take a migrant home wif you!"
New York: Take home a migrant waifu!
Entire Generation of Troons: Alright!
New York: Fooled ya!
Troons: Dammit! [grabs migrant's hand and leads them towards home]
Although it might be theoretically possible to imagine American politicians helping to ease the situation in the Middle East, this is not the Administration or the President who could. In fact, there has not been an Administration or President of the United States in the last hundred years or more who could. It is doubtful that ANY outside politician could bring lasting peace to the region, although they can certainly worsen the situation with their usual ham-handed attempts at intervention there. The only people who can bring lasting peace to the region are the Palestinians themselves. When they finally get tired of being impoverished squatters useful only as human shields for terrorists, then - and only then - will there be peace and prosperity in Palestine.
It's also not clear to me that Israel SHOULD de-escalate! They have repeatedly bent over backwards to appear even-handed with measured military retaliations after being provoked with military and terrorist attacks over many decades. Although it's not clear that any other strategy is possible, it has just as clearly not resulted in a lasting peace in the region. Perhaps it's time to wage total war on Hamas at this point.
"They have repeatedly bent over backwards to appear even-handed with measured military retaliations after being provoked with military and terrorist attacks over many decades."
This is as good an illustration as any why America is not to be relied on for a peaceful solution. The above quote could have come directly from Joe Biden, and nobody would have been the wiser.
Sorry the facts don't support your desired anti-Semitic narrative.
Is that the best you can do?
I don't have to do better. My response to you complaining about not liking reality doesn't require anything else. If that bothers you, then I suggest you embrace reality.
Try again. That's not an improvement.
Nope. My first comment was more than sufficient.
Sufficiently inane and unfunny? Not a high bar.
Perfectly suited to a bullshitter such as you.
He doesn’t need to do much. Your comment was both unsupported, and idiotic.
Did you know that?
"He doesn’t need to do much. "
I don't think he can do much. His comments are inane and unfunny. Still, I appreciate you all taking the trouble to read and respond to my comments.
He can certainly do better than you.
According to wingnut.com, this is all part of the WEF, globalist, military-industrial, child-blood drinking, liberal Jew plot to rule the world.

I recommend 360 grains of Trepanazine, administered intercranially at 1600 fps to cure this particular disease.
A few years back you posted kiddy porn to this site, and your initial handle was banned. The link below details all the evidence surrounding that ban. A decent person would honor that ban and stay away from Reason. Instead you keep showing up, acting as if all people should just be ok with a kiddy-porn-posting asshole hanging around. Since I cannot get you to stay away, the only thing I can do is post this boilerplate.

According to Pluggo.com, power structures totally don't ever try and amass more power.
Ignore the history of things like the aristocracy and the path of every socialist country ever. It's somehow different now.
Dude. You really need to calm down and seek some help on whatever mental issues you are having.
turd, the ass-clown of the commentariat, lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit
"When they finally get tired of being impoverished squatters useful only as human shields for terrorists, then – and only then – will there be peace and prosperity in Palestine."
I disagree. Getting tired is not enough. There are two sides to the dispute. It will end and peace will reign when both sides, tired or not, sit down and negotiate a settlement. I advocate a one state solution, incorporating Israel, Jerusalem and the other territories where the state doesn't play favorites to any ethnic or religious group.
I agree that the US is too morally and intellectually bankrupt to play much of a positive role. The new kid on the block, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization might fare better. China and Russia are the main powers in the organization, it also includes Israeli friends, India, and enemies such as Iran. And regional powerhouses like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Israel has been an applicant for 'dialogue partnership' since 2016. So there is an alternative to reliance on US de-escalation of the conflict.
As useless as usual. Israel is a Jewish state, a theocracy of a sort, and will not agree to any "solution" which does not leave the Jews in power. The Muslims have no interest in sharing power with Jews and will not agree to any "solution" which leaves Jews in power.
The so-called one state solutions all end up with more Arabs/Muslims than Jews.
The one state solution was implemented by the UN in 1948.
The Arab states refused to do their part and take in the displaced Arabs, choosing war instead.
Yes, the Arabs haven't done squat for their alleged brethren. You'd think they might even be a bit embarrassed that the Persians are doing more than the Arabs, or pissed off that the Persians are interfering and stoking war, but they haven't got even that much moxie.
You’d think they might even be a bit embarrassed that the Persians are doing more than the Arabs, or pissed off that the Persians are interfering and stoking war, but they haven’t got even that much moxie.
I guess they must hate Jews more than they do Persians.
The fact that neither side is in favor of the one state solution makes it the obvious and ultimate compromise that will finally bring peace to the region.
You are kind of forgetting that one side only believes in a one state solution.
"You are kind of forgetting that one side only believes in a one state solution."
When both sides finally get around to believing in a one state solution, maybe we'll have some peace and quiet. Until then, America willing, the conflict continues.
Um, I see you don't understand what a "one state solution" actually means.
OK.
I rhymes with “final solution.”
Hope that helps.
It won’t. He’s such an intellectual lightweight that such concept will go right over his head and he will just start posting nonsense like always.

"Spouting nonsense is an end in itself."
You could have said the same thing about the Nazis and Jews.
Only yesterday you were telling us how Jordan would except millions of Palestinian refugees on nothing more than a word of warning from Joe Biden. But again with the Nazis. Do more Jordan.
Jordan can be pressured to accept the Palestinians; and Palestinians are ethnically and religiously indistinguishable from Jordanians.
"Jordan can be pressured to accept the Palestinians"
They couldn't be pressured to reverse their decision to disinvite one US president. Maybe you stick to your Nazis, after all.
Nonsense. Israel has ALWAYS been in favor of one state solution, and Israeli state, governed by Jews. Israel has always worked against any 2 state solution.
The majority of Israelis are atheists.
Atheist Theocrats are the worst.
^^^
If only they existed any more than God, M'Lady.
*Tips IDF helmet.*
But these "Jewish" atheists still believe in Jewish Supremacy, i.e., the "Chosen" people.
So you advocate for the incarceration of a few million Palestinians then? Because that's what a one-state solution means: people who are fundamentally hostile to liberal democracy will have to be incarcerated.
No, I don't advocate the incarceration of a few million Palestinians. I don't advocate liberal democracies doing so either.
Good thing no liberal democracies are doing that then, huh?
Liberal democracies incarcerate people who oppose the fundamental principles on which those liberal democracies are founded.
Bullshit. The Palestinians are upset because the Jewish state evicted them from their lands (see Deir Yassin) and incarcerated them in the open air prison that is Gaza.
Almost like they have been in Gaza.
I recommend carpet-bombing. All the way up through Lebanon, along the coast.
It's like plowing fields, only vastly more efficient, and turns the fertilizer in amongst the earth.
"I recommend carpet-bombing. "
A good choice. Nine out of ten liberal democrats agree.
Israel isn’t the problem. Hamas and the low IQ ‘Palestinians’ are. This ends when they either give up their genocidal Muslim dreams, or are exterminated by Israel in self defense.
Case closed.
"This ends when they either give up their genocidal Muslim dreams, or are exterminated by Israel in self defense."
And we'll all be home by Christmas.
"Israel" has no right of self defense. Israel is an invading occupier and has ZERO rights against the occupied. Does an armed, violent home invader have self defense rights?
No. Next dumb question.
How are they going to de-escalate? Stupid old Joe pledged 100 million to Gaza. What do you think that moneys going to buy?
The finest Iranian drones on the market?
Hamas rockets that at worst only kill one victim at a time?
I hear they need a new hospital parking lot
I'm almost ashamed to admit that I laughed at that. Almost.
*SNERK!*
Can America do that, sure. Will America do that? Absolutely not. There is no money to be made by the MIC without people blowing each other up.
Have you considered importing everyone in Gaza to Washington D.C.?
Sounds like a great idea! With the best of intentions! What could possibly go wrong?
I would actually pay a lot of money to see that happen.
You cannot negotiate with your executioner.
Especially after you killed his daughter.
https://www.theblaze.com/columns/opinion/macintyre-whoops-a-moderate-notices-replacement-migration
While the events unfolding in the conflict between Hamas and Israel are horrific, they have provided some critical moments of startling clarity as many liberals say the quiet parts out loud. Dan Carlin, the host of the popular “Hardcore History” podcast, is a self-described libertarian who came down with a nasty case of Trump derangement syndrome after the election of the 45th president. He now dutifully parrots mainstream media talking points about the ominous brand of authoritarianism that the former reality television host represents.
Ironically, Carlin recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the dangers of replacement-level immigration while outlining the rationale for Israel’s approach to border security, explaining that the Jewish population would be subject to “conquest via democracy” if they changed their current policy. The historian is correct about this political reality but would be aghast if the same plain truth issued from the mouth of a MAGA supporter.
It’s not conquest if they vote Democrat.

BREAKING: Hamas sympathizers have completely taken over the rotunda of the US Capitol calling for a “CEASEFIRE” in Gaza
[Video]
It isnt an insurrection until Capitol officers shoots an unarmed protestor.
Exactly, that, and the other protestor deaths, made it a "deadly attack."
It’s going to be fucking hilarious when they hunt Biden down to get the US to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza and he shoves Kammy "I like school buses" Harris in front of them.
"Hamas sympathizers have completely taken over the rotunda of the US Capitol calling for a “CEASEFIRE” in Gaza"
Ignore them. It's just America trying to de-escalate.
Man, it's wild that Hamas committed a huge terrorist attack and now there are worldwide protests in support of Hamas.
Might be a lesson worth learning there.
"There are billions worldwide who need death if the Enlightenment is to survive."?
Remember, folks:
mtrueman|8.30.17 @ 1:42PM|#
"Spouting nonsense is an end in itself."
Not a terrorist attack. Military. Israel, and the armed, fortified kibbutzim have ZERO self defence rights against the Gazans. Also, look up Hannibal Directive.
The only way the situation will "de-escalate" is if Palestinians stop calling for the destruction of Israel. And that's going to happen when hell freezes over. America isn't going to change their minds.
There is no way that Israel is going to let this go.
This is, proportionately, far larger for Israel than 9/11 was for the U.S., and there was no way on God's green Earth that the U.S. was going to negotiate with Al Qaeda...
This ain't gonna end until there are a few thousand good (dead) Hamas.
Whatever Hamas hoped to accomplish from their attack, none of them will be around to find out how it worked out.
Remember the Golan Heights?
Yes, I do. Sort of a land-grab.
Peace folks and rights folks at least must admit that it is war to the death of Hamas now or a protracted war with much more casualties later. It can't logically be any other way for terrorists who aim rockets at civilian centers.
Didn't we have some dude a few years ago doing that with the Abraham accord? Must have been a local story that reason missed
Local story? WWIII was all over the news!
He didn't bomb anyone, therefore no Peace Prize. Plus it was nepotism. Unlike Ukraine.
"Didn’t we have some dude a few years ago doing that with the Abraham accord? "
War between Israel and UAE has at last been averted. War between Israel and Palestine is a small price to pay.
I’ve never seen anyone so prideful in being a complete idiot like you. It’s actually impressive. Most people have too much self-respect to pull it off.
What do you want from a 50 center?
Yeah, when we had a competent President, we had progress toward peace.
"we had progress toward peace."
You make peace with enemies. Making peace with those who were never a threat in the first place doesn't count.
Doesn't count is a little harsh. My Israeli friends tell me they appreciate finally being able to transit through Dubai on their way to India and other chill destinations to the east.
Descalation is a consequence of destroying your enemy, not a tactic.
That is true. These States did some humongous deescalation in September of 1945.
Of course we can de-escalate it. With overwhelming force. What we ultimately SHOULD have done in the first place immediately following 9/11.
We can do it in ten easy steps, in fact.
"Of course we can de-escalate it. With overwhelming force."
All the force a keyboard can muster.
Sounds more like a pair of launch keys.
As opposed to the zero force that Islamist apologists, enablers, and outright supporters muster?
"You know, Hezbollah is very smart. They're all very smart," Trump said. Who wants to be the first to brag about how "really smart" it was to stop nuclear plant construction and rely instead on importing Saudi Arabian oil and terrorists?
Why would Israel agree to de-escalate before Hamas is destroyed?
They may be afraid of walking into a trap and getting bogged down in Gaza while a more formidable foe, Hezbollah, takes advantage and opens a second (or third) front. And all these attacks are sure to put a crimp in the ongoing task of West Bank land thieving.
You certainly make it clear how full of shit you are.
Sevo, you are really uninformed. Read up on the Hannibal Directive. Listen to Scott Ritter on YouTube. Or Doug MacGregor.
Israel is getting its ass kicked, that's why. They've lost over half their tanks since 10/7. Losing the economic productivity of all of those reservists they called up. Over 4000 permanently injured infantry. All of you pro-Israel communists should have a listen to Scott Ritter.
Donnie thinks the Moe-hammedan jihadists are really smart. Remember how they earned their popularity by kidnapping and killing those Israeli athletes at the Second Hitler Olympics? Anybody with any sense at all can see they're right up there with the looters that pardoned Lieutenant Calley and attacked and vandalized the electoral vote count.
Kamala Harris is sooo goddam stupid. Her comment about slavery.
Here is what Henry Louis Gates would say to a moron like Harris:
"How did slaves make it to these coastal forts? The historians John Thornton and Linda Heywood of Boston University estimate that 90 percent of those shipped to the New World were enslaved by Africans and then sold to European traders. The sad truth is that without complex business partnerships between African elites and European traders and commercial agents, the slave trade to the New World would have been impossible, at least on the scale it occurred."
No one will say it but she is a racist and a hater.
"You know what happens, after about 20 minutes the stuff that he's taking wears off. He gets a little groggy. He gets a little bit groggy! They say, 'Get him off the stage! That shit's wearing off, man! Get him off!'" - Fatass Donnie, Lewser
