Nobel Prize–Winning Economist: Democrats Are Committed 'To Spending Other People's Money'
Vernon Smith weighs in on Biden's budget, how government causes inflation, and why bailing out Silicon Valley Bank was a bad idea.
HD DownloadVernon Smith received the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his pioneering work in experimental economics. I caught up with the 96-year-old recently in Southern California and conducted a long interview about his life and work that will appear as a Reason podcast.
Here's part of our conversation about President Joe Biden's massive $6.8 trillion budget plan, the role of government spending and Federal Reserve policy in causing inflation, the bailout of Silicon Valley Bank, and why Smith believes "it's very hard to keep Democrats [from] wanting to make the world better by spending other people's money."

"Democrats Are Committed 'To Spending Other People's Money'
So irrefutable proof that this guy hates children, right?
And grandmas.
And POC.
“Democrats Are Committed ‘To Spending Other People’s Money’"
...said everyone with functioning eyes and ears
Paul Krugman disagrees. Check. Mate.
Actually Paul endorses the concept, and wants to make it a Constitutional amendment.
OPM is highly addictive. Once you start you can't stop.
When I saw the article title I went to login because my first thought was to let Reason readers know that the Nobel prize was/is a publicity play by the Bank of Sweden. Alfred Nobel never considered Economics as a real science and would never have approved of this nonsense. Then I see the name that every American pseudo-intellectual that reads the Atlantic blurts out to prove a non point when they don’t even understand the Austrian school of economics OR even know who Murry Rothbard is. I just giggle. And Reason PLEASE don’t perpetuate the problem with the right wing version of Krugman the left wing hack. The Nobel prize for Economics is a sham. Jesseaz please read Thomas Piketty and talk about it in your echo chamber book club. It’s not a check mate by any standard. It’s two Economic THEORIES that the oppositions will never prove nor agree on. Pseudo science. It’s why I gave up Economics after my undergrad and became a functional member of society.
Now if I can only get my wife out of academia my soul will be soothed.
Word to the new guy: check your sarc meter. Jesse is likely no fan of krug or picketty.
EISTAU Gree-Vance,
Roger that. The Nobel prize for economics causes me to get crosseyed. I forget the level of members here is leagues above most other sites I visit.
Your typical american democrat is basically a full-bore communist just holding back from saying what they really mean and want.
But at least the adults are in charge.
Is he saying Republicans lack commitment? HOW DARE YOU!
It's the GOV-GUNS they are after to STEAL other people's money.
No need to sugar-coat it. They're "armed-theft" criminals.
That's the very reason they aren't just a membership, union, business or charity organization. They just like to advertise they are making the world a better place while they load their guns and STEAL more, more, more.

Trump signed off on about 8 trillion more added to the debt after a campaign promise to pay off the entire 21 trillion dollar debt in less than 8 years. ('...it would be so easy...'). To hear someone say, '....I'm shocked, shocked, to see someone like Biden proposing another 6 trillion...' and laying the blame upon 'democrats' is pathetic.
"Trump signed off on about 8 trillion more..."
Veto-proof.
Stuff your TDS up your ass; your head's begging for company.
Yeah, he actually proposed a budget with cuts, and Congress's response was bipartisan spending increases passed with a veto-proof majority.
Admittedly, he then gave up on reducing the deficit, and moved on to other goals that Congress might not be so determined to block.
I think I'd have preferred if he'd forced them to over-ride his veto every year, just to make it perfectly clear who was responsible, but I guess I can understand him not wanting to burn his very limited political capital on that.
"8 trillion more"
R we just throwing Biden's in as Trumps now or what?
UR full of Sh*t.
